partnerships with google and the san francisco unified school district and especially with mayor lee and his administration we've made some really incredible progress and in fact the waiting list for family shelter here in san francisco has gone down in recent months [applause] so what that means is not too long ago over 280 families these are parents with their children were waiting for for 9 months or more to get a shelter bed and now there's less than 150 families waiting less than 6 months to get a shelter bed and we have a long way to go to get that number down to to zero and i think we can get there and i think mr. mayor i hope to partner with you and to get that number lower than a hundred by christmas we can make that happen [applause] i'm happy to be working in a city where we're not working on the

night? [applause] mark was there. listen, it's such an honor for the warriors to be joining this effort to house our homeless veterans and we talked to sf city a lot and ron a lot and and i think this conversation about this project might project might have been the shortest one we've ever had and absolutely the warriors are answering and after all we call ourselves the golden state warriors and i think it's the best team in sports it translates across all cultures what that concept of a warrior is and it's really only rioting that right that i think we do our part to support the true warriors in our community the men and women who served our country and today i don't think if you know it but today is an anniversary of sorts 3 years to the day that the warriors accepted

your invitation to come back to san francisco and today we're so close to building a world-class entertainment arena just a few blocks from here we want to be to be great neighbors and that's going to include our ongoing support of our veterans and entered into a lot of agreements in this process and one that's gotten a little bit of attention and the fact that the warriors and the san francisco building trades have developed a a helmets to to hard hat training and that includes opportunities at our sports and entertainment center we're building right here and made that commitment more than a year ago with organized labor to create special outreach and training programs for veterans to bring them in to work on our project as its built and in our arena once it's

opened and worked hard to create opportunities for veterans to have a place to work and i think this commitment to providing a place to live struck a perfect cord with the warriors and in the meantime active on a lot of fronts with our veterans and team visits to travis air force base and a assemble care packages for the troops and operation care and comfort over the past few years including financial contributions as well as game tickets to the games and heroes among us honoring individuals who have made an overwhelming back on the lives of others and these awards presented each year to 4 members of the armed services or veterans who have made a positive positive impact on the lives of others and enjoy

nothing more than that when we can create a surprise reyou reunion and after all in our business the warriors every day celebrate heroes right and to celebrate our most important heroes thank you for including us thank you [applause]. . >> now to introduce a warrior of a different kind i'd like to introduce you to a vietnam veteran and his story isn't so different from that long could that long costly conflict and lost 58 thousand american lives and duane has continued to serve his country working at the veteran's administration in san francisco please join me in thanking duane for his

service and welcoming his comments today. [applause] . >> i just want to thank the mayor and all of these folks that have brought this project together. i think i speak for most veterans that need safe housing for their families. this gives them hope that they haven't had because most veterans or homeless veterans can't live in this area so i think this is the perfect project for them. for me, i've seen a great change because i've lived here in the city for over 60 years so it's a wonderful

thing. wonderful thing to build this housing for them and the other housing down the street but mainly this here. it's kind of that i've seen. when i came back from vietnam, it was hopelessness. i was formerly homeless, too, years ago but i do my best now to try to get veterans back on the right track so i just want to thank everyone -- mayor lee, thank you so much. [applause]. >> all right. home
