you to california and hope you remember when you were a teenager and that wasn't so laupg ago, that you were a exchange student and nearby nuvauto. you learned lot since then and we are happy to have you back at the secretary general. we'd like to recognize the ambassadors that are here from around the world that are ambassador tooz had united nations. may i ask you to stand, please? we in san francisco would like to acknowledge our partnership with the united nations for this celebration of the 70th anniversary and welcome the

founer and chairman of the united nations foundation, ted turner. ted, are you here? all right. you know you could have had you americas cup on san francisco bay, it's not too late. you know, everyone here especially those in the stage know a celebration like this cannot be held without the support of wonderful community leaders so if i may i would like to recognize them. brian chesky and air b and b. michael pel, kaiser permanenty, the parker foundation, nancy fund and phil [inaudible] the sales force foundation and tom styer. thank you for your support. through the 70 years

we had many celebrations in san francisco to celebrate those 70 yours in san francisco the signing of the charter. now people ask. they say, why was it in san francisco and i always say, why not? so, goes the story that prez dntd roosevelt soviet leader stalin and church hill were in a discussion to decide where this meeting should take a place but didn't come up with a answer. geneva, that passed by, however there was a day that roosevelt secretary of state stutinious had a vision. he had a vision and in his diary he recalls a wakening of [inaudible] on the morning of february 19, 945 in

writing. i saw sth golden sun hp shine and as a lay on the black shores of the sea in the cumeana i can feel the invigorating air in the pacific. he suddenly imagined san francisco for the ideal spot ingalthering. it was equal distance between asian europe and latin america, perfect for a world to get together. roosevelt liked the idea to emphasize the porns of winning the war. i'm sure most had [inaudible] they do choose to come here. they came here and the mate are ark of one of the big gold rush families mrs. flood gave up her pent house at

the fairmont hotel. on june 25, 1945 a dramatic session took place in the opera house which most know is right behind us here and in that session lord hell fax was presiding and he this is such a incredible occasion. in stead of sayic yea or nay we'll stand so 800 some ought delegates stood then staff and visitors 3 thousand on a very strong standing ovation that was unprecedented because it was unanimous the united nations charter would be in session and would be passed. the next day on june 26, 50 nations went to the war memorial building which is

roilth behind us which is being restored and opened in september, the 50 people signed the charter and it was presided over by president truman who said the united nations charter is a solid structure of which we can build a better world. we are proud in san francisco that the united nations was created in san francisco and international city where we celebrate diversity. now, i would like to introduce the landlord of these buildings. have we paid our bill? okay, good. now, mayor lee, he was not here 70 years ago like some of the other people here and there, willy brown. at that time the mayor lee, his

parentern immigrant from china and lived in seattle. his father fought in ww 2. as a teenager he was a delegate to a national model un. today he shares the values of the united nations advancing peace, human rights, gender equality, protecting the environment. all of these he has pursued with strong leadership. may i present the mayor of the city and county of san francisco, mayor ed lee. >> thank you charlotte. isn't shar thrt ltd. the most wonderful chief of protocol we have ever had? thank you charlotte. before i say welcome, i must tell you that every time i see willy browns

face here at city hall and i look around on these moments, this historical occasions, i'm reminded that he led the effort to restore our city hall and make sure we have the world class place for world class event. thank you mayor willy brown for that. good afternoon everyone? welcome city hall and welcome to the peoples palace! the charter of the united nations assigned on june 26, 1945 is charlotte said right here in san francisco. a place of peace, equality acceptance and tolerance if all people. and we are proud of our cities role in leading the nation and perhaps the world on

these very values. long last ladies and gentlemen, marriage equality in the united states! we started that movement, we started that movement right here in san francisco when then mayor gaven newsome dared to mary loving same sex loving cup lt here in the dome of city hall nearly a decade ago and took the civil right issue of our generation to had highest court of our country and now our city leads the way in lgbt movement because we are commit today equality for all,

equality without exception. there is always always room for equality, so we are wurns again changing the world. these are san francisco values and now they are values touted around the world. from the gold rush days to the building of the railroad, through wars and liberation movements, the aids crisis, the.com boom and now our housing crisis, the story of san francisco is one of rapid growth. spurts of growth. it is a story of new industries and movements that brought mew waves of people all seeking a better life and opportunities that san francisco more than most places has always represented. with our strong economic foundation we vaspecial opportunity to change

the city for the better and see san francisco is affordable for families and insure every san francisco shares in our cities rising prosperity. as usual, it was doctor king who said it best, we may have come on different ships, but we are all in the same boat now. because hope and opportunity after all are really at the heart of the place, this idea called san francisco. many of us came from somewhere else or our parents did or their parents before them and whether it was [inaudible] city or-the county

clerk or world plains texas, what brought us here was a sense of hope that san francisco more than most places offered greater opportunities to build a different and a better life. we are changing the world once again where all lives matter and we are a beacon in the world too often torn apart by differences. here in san francisco we celebrate diversity, we just don't tolerate it. as we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the united nations charter and because of the secretary generals goal to end all forms of discrimination and insure that each and every member of the human family can enjoy their fundamental human rights, i am pleased to present his

exsulaens ban ki-moon with our cities highest honor, the key to our city. >> i'm so delighted he is joined today by his american mother and he'll explain that hopefully in a minute. on behalf-there way from the [inaudible] on behalf of the city and counto of san francisco, i look forward to continuing our work with the united nations and insureing freedom and equality for

everyone without exception. it is my great pleasure to introduce someone here everyone knows and he is doing such a fantastic job, the great governor of our state of california, the honorable, jerry brown. >> thank you mayor. it is great to be here. i can't help but note i came here first on june 8, 1944 and i sat right here watching my father sworn in as district attorney of san francisco. i go back 22 years to tell celebrate this great day. the united nations is such a amazing idea and it's declaration of human rights.

what a unimaginable idea at the time. elnor roosevelt was ininstrumental in making that happen and those many years when the countries of russia and china and america and all these other major countries got together after all the killing and suffering and holocaust to inshine this hope, the united nations committed to universal declaration of rights. well, what a wonderful thing and we are not there yet. but it gives me hope that something that was completely unimag nnl when this united nations charter was adopted in san francisco, that is marriage equality has become a realty. so i think we can take great

comfort and hope from the fact that something that people didn't even conceive of not so many decades ago, has become a realty by the united states supreme court all over this country. marriage equality, the right of same sex couples now recognized by the highest court in the land. who would have ever thought that even 5 years ago but it happened. it happened. and so it is never time to give into cynicism or dispair or belief that things can't happen. thinks can happen and the united nations can fulfill its dream of a world at peace, of a world where the climate is protected instead of destroyed, where

nuclear weapons are destroyed instead of replicated and built up. so, a great opportunity to reno new our hope in the impossible dream because we saw the impossible dream become the realty of today and now we have to then believe and do everything we can to make sure the united nations can fulfill its fundamental man date. let me introduce someone in the 4front of making all these things come to pass in the united states congress. the leader of san francisco and congress, nancy pelosi, my good friend and fellow-i don't want to say fellow immigrant to san francisco. like everyone else on this stage. >> thank you very much governor
