3:06 pm
other thing i wanted to high light is we vavule nl toor group called symphonics which is young profession lt group. they organized a facebook event and sent it oit last week and found that over 11 thounl thousand
3:07 pm
people said they are coming. we will have maybe additional thousand people more we would have had without their help reaching out and telling other union professionals about that event. i can't hesitate all you to come but also want to mention i like the repertoire we are doing because it is a mix oaf jan rus we have seen in the past so we are featureing the inmusic of brise rezner who is a electric guitar. we are having infusion of indy rock and classical music so thipg that will er attract a lot of #350e7al. i want to thaj moneek and staff because the simpany imagining a new space is a lot of work but wonderful work and we feel we hope we have a footprint if additional community events we hope you will have in the
3:08 pm

3:10 pm
much for everything and coming today to get us excited. commission aers a few more items the next is the casualalation of the august 2015 meeting. there isn't enough agenda for the august 11 meetding so the next meeting will be sept8, 2015 at our standing time and place. i'm prod on behalf of the port staff and our art commission colleagues to share with you that the bay view rise art project won a major award this past i think just last week june 15 american frz the art which is the non profit organization for advancing arts honored [inaudible] public arts project created in 2014. they have a program called
3:11 pm
public art network which is the only of its kind which they look at art projects of the past year and honor them in some way. they look at more than 300 entries across the country and recognized bay view roiz as the most compelling art project in the country and recognized at the art [inaudible] in chicago. we are proud of that honor and it was share would the art ss laura hudad and tom drugen as well as the community which helped with the inspuration for bay view rise so very pleased on that and coodoes to everyone vauchbed in the project and it is a inspuration for more projects i hope >> can i make a comment on that. you [inaudible] to the community and i know i said this before but one thofe things i enjoyed most
3:12 pm
about what the artist created at this project was that they reached out to the community and spent a great deal of time talking to members and leaders in the community, in fact, mentioning names but there was another finalist that was actually removed from contention after they said they didn't want to participate in our request they reach out to the community and so they dropped out or we dropped them out of the competition. but i think the fact this piece won an award demonstrates the fact that the community was involved and it made for such a compel{wonderful piece and further justifies the port commission and art commission pushing to make sure the dmunty was included. particularly pleased to see this all transspired the way it did >> thank you that is a excellent point and we are thrilled as well and hope fell our next piece is also
3:13 pm
award beening. last week marked the 15 anverry of the embarcadero rowd way. it is hard to believe it is 15 years old or 15 years young dependent on your perspective it opened june 16, 2000 and as you may know there was a vision to create the embarcadero as a urban boulevard that went to the voters several times and not wellome braced and had the [inaudible] earthquake which forced the issue and under the leadership of mayor [inaudible] it was determine today brin down the freeway and proceed with the road way. the embarcadero freway was torn down in 1991 giving way to what is now the embark dareee road way. construction started before the [inaudible] earthquake on the southern way because it was intended the rowd way would exist under the free
3:14 pm
way and bring muni under the free way so the road way was completed in threphases, first the south and then the north and midembark dairy which is where we are and it was completed june 16, 2000. i think this is a incredible mile stone for the port today so want to make sure we highlighted and celebrated its 15 years already. time is passing and it is being well well well utilized by pedestrians and cars and everyone else. then unforninately we lost 2 very good friends of the port in the last couple week squz would like to first mention port [inaudible] michael [inaudible] president of diamond freight system. i don't know many have gotten the pleasure of meeting mike but he has been a tenant at pier 50 diamond
3:15 pm
freight for a long time for about 17 years. mike was a native of san francisco and born in 1952 here and the family had a long history in the trucking business and he took over the trucking company when his dad passed away. mike has been a very engaged tenant over the years. i know when i bexha port director he called me regular all most every night to see how everything was going with a very frndly voice and then became a very critical voice and a good friends. mike was a advd san francisco fan and season ticket olderidating back to had days of [inaudible] he was a good father and grand father and it is very sad to lose him before fathers day. he is survived by shannon
3:16 pm
posh and shannon has many children that he just adored. he will be missed. there will be a mass this coming saturday at saint [inaudible] which is 19th street. the mass is this std at 10 a.m. at saibt theresa so anyone that would like to attend and honor mike, hope to see you there. i know there are a number of us in the maritime and real estate community that will miss mike and all the different things he brought for us including surviving as a small trucker. and then i think as everyone knows we also lost a icon in san francisco, mr. leroy cane a long time bay area leader civil rights advocate and member of the san francisco redevelopment commission passed away at the age of 91. he pasds way
3:17 pm
friday june 12 and was able to pass away in his home of many decades. i believe he moved into his home in 1963 and was able to live there until he passed. he was born in 1923 in fresno and i guess came to san francisco during ww 2. he served in europe in the army and then when he was discharged he came back to the san francisco and found his way to the international long shore, the [inaudible] i believe is local 6. i'll refer to commissioner adams for mere detail. he is a familiar face throughout the city and well known for wearing his [inaudible] jacket i think everywhere he went and very very proud och that. he always had a wonderful smile for all of us and it was hard to picture him as a [inaudible] activist marching in the streets and demanding change
3:18 pm
because he was usually giving out big smiles and big bear hugs and kisses, but ewoo were thrilled to be part of his world. he is well known for a number of things that he did but i think we all admire him recently for his activism well into his late 80's and his slaim clame to fame being arrested during a street demonstration on behalf of hotel workers so we are proud of him for keeping up his zeal and zest. there are several accomplishment memorialized in mr. kings memory. first as you may know the 108 year old care sell at yurba brena gardens is named the leroy king care tell in 2014. he helped to shape the redevelopment agency for i think 3 decades in service as a commissioner so it is
3:19 pm
well deserved honor and something knroe he was quite proud of. in 2011 a bronze [inaudible] of mr. king was installed as the jazz heritage [inaudible] at the fill more [inaudible] african american and japanese heritage and in 2009 the [inaudible] with the martin luther king memorial award for the life time social justice work. it has just been a honor for the city to house a resident such as mr. king who served so tirelessly and public service and it is big loss in our hearts so we will miss him. >> public comment. the first person i have is chris
3:20 pm
consist ynlson >> good afternoon port commission. some know me and some don't. i'm christopher christensen of [inaudible] president of bay area long shore memorial association. moneek just speak on leroy king and the amazing activist and labor leader and i was-had the privilege to serve on the northern california district counsel at the ends of his life, he was still active. i want to inform the port commission and staff his family and bay area long shore memorial is having a memorial on july 25 which is a saturday from 10-3 at the i [inaudible] at 400 north point and i'm extending warm well knh to invite the port commission and port staff. and that is it
3:21 pm
>> thank you. any other public speakers? seeing none commissioners-- >> and just want to say something about leroy king who was such a wonderful person. i know when i was first appointed to this commission he was one of the first people to embrace me and take me to lunch and try to show me the ropes and he has been such a great frepds for so squlaung is just such a wonderful activist. if he believe in a cause you would take it on too because he trully believed and he is trully going to be missed and i hope i can make these
3:22 pm
ilwu honor hall to honor him and memorialize his life here in san francisco. thank you >> commissioner adams >> leroy king was a icon, a american icon. leroy ran nancy pelosis first campaign when she went to congress. she always loved leroy. she recently did a speech on the floor of congress talking about leroy king who was a good friend oof nancy pelosi. lee row told me a story, you never know the obstuicals people have to go through in life. when leroy and his wife came to the city, leroy being african american and his wife was white and at that time a
3:23 pm
black person couldn't rent the apart so leroys wife would have to rent the aparnlt and 6 or 7 times they found she was married to leroy and had to move. finally they took it to court but leroy chs that kind of guy and to leroy all people mattered and i ask as soon as we are done i think it is appropriate to have a moment for leroy and also for the people who [inaudible] >> i first met leroy on nancy pelosis first congrgzal campaign, but then he continued to serve as a mentor and advisor. was one
3:24 pm
of my first supporters when i ran for had board of sfr visors and i was honored to have the support of someone who i so admiresed. i think fwt leroy and his activism and how he stood by his convictions and shared those convictions but he gave a lessen in how to disagree with somebody without being disagreeable. he could be tough, firm and he always had a smile on for people and loved watching him take on all the good fight squz don't think i ever saw him lose, but he did it with such class. it was a real lessen in how to make change and make a difference in peoples lives and how to do it the right way and he is someone who i will miss his work on behalf of the sitee and on behalf oaf so many of
3:25 pm
us and as a friend. i concur with commissioner adams if we can have a moment of silence for our memoriams, leroy and michael and also i think we should adjourn in memory of the 9 victims [inaudible] that is something to this day is a fight that leroy would have been leading and it would be a honor to have us adjourn in their memory as well.
3:26 pm
thank you. >> item bport commissioners report presentation by kenneth [inaudible] executive director on [inaudible] office effort to promote chine ease investment to california to help california companies doing business in china >> commissioner adams will you do the introduction? >> here we go. kenneth j petrola exponent tev director of california trade and investment. 68 appointed exponent tev director of the california china officer trade investment december 18, 2014. ken leads a dedicated [inaudible] in china and
3:27 pm
california to facilitate chinese investment in california and help california companies doing business in china. prior to the california auchs china trade and investment ken was a exponentative vp of wells fargo. during the 30 years at wells fargo ken held many positions including the [inaudible] managing director of wells farg bank and other banking positions >> i would like tatalk about ken putrela. i fs blessed to go with peter daily maritime director jim [inaudible] marketing director of the port. we went to the philippines first and then to shanghai to the conference and was during that time that we went to the california china officer trade and investment and sat there with ken
3:28 pm
putrela and his assistants and we were there for over a hour and a half. ken enlightened us on a lot of things and what i liked about ken is he has impeccable credentials in the business world and with people but he want today know what he could do to help the port of san francisco bring more business into the port and what we want as far as general cargo and cumauzties. everyone knows the cruise is banging but ken wanted to help us and he was a insider and really cared and my last night there i had the prevolog to go out to dinner with ken and his lovely wife to a restaurant owned by a san amateo resident and giant fan and got to know ken as a person. he has a home here and a daughter that lives in hurin. just great and he heard about commissioner woo hooand #450e knee he chss
3:29 pm
coming here and it is a honor today to have kenneth putrilla here representing governor jery brown and he understand california. if you do business in china you have to understand california and he is going to work with us and think governor brown couldn't make a better choice. the guy has all the credentials and he understands. kenneth putrilla >> thank you very much. that was one of the nicest introductions i have gotten but i go by ken. kenneth j putrilla sounds a little formal but that is my name. this opportunity is wonderful to promote the state of california and address the commissioners and tell a little about our undertaking on behalf of the state and i think the purpose is i would thrike be able to tell you more about the states office and how we might be able to work
3:30 pm
together because in addition to helping the port in any way that i can through the states office, i also am interested in helping your client. sthose customers and prospects you work with that use the ports, they will have needs too. i guess this is the clicker here. the california china office of trade and investment is the official office of the state of california. the state was absent from this business for about-international business for 10 years. there was a office in china that was closed about 10 years ago and governor brown said the state of california has so much going on with china, we need to have a office to enhance what we do to do more of it and to represent the state, so approximately 3 years ago governor brown opened the office in
