cowen. >> madam president supervisor cohen. >> thank you. >> colleagues today i'd like to recognize the san francisco affairs veteran affairs commission and the friends of the that concludes my report chicago memorial for the awareness and remembrance the port chicago discharge and they're ongoing survivors of this terrible incident that occurred in july 1944 now for you who are unfamiliar with the port of chicago incidents i'll explain what happened on jill 171944 crews were working in the san francisco bay area loading two pacific bond vessels when the explosive ignited in a terrific series of blasts

explosion destroyed both ships and killed everyone on the waterfront and today, this tragedy ignition the sources for bombs and guns are loaded separately on carriers that caused the greatest loss of life on the home front during world war ii 3 hundred and 20 men died and almost 4 hundred oversees were injured another 3 hundred and two-year killed 2 hundred and 2 were african-american in the nation then integrated military inless and draft african-americans could only work in kitchens e.r. as steve discovers loading and unloading ships the steve discovers lacked training and thought they were handing in active missions. >> working to load bombs

equipped with warheads after the explosion african-american survivors were then sent to a nearby basis to resume loading the ships many of the military men refused to continue their work without safety training and the united states navy charged 50 of those men with quote conspires with mutiny that was known as the port chicago mutt i didn't trial they were tried and convicted and in prison they were after the war allowed to complete their military services only one person was pardoned and noting none were x-rated this case supported by marshall as well as eleanor ramon hotel led to the desegregation of the entire united states military

in 1948 this friday marks the san franciscoth anniversary of this disaster i'd like to bring up briefly commissioner andrea jenkins and another person the president of the friends of the port chicago collectively all of those women along with the organizations have been working tirelessly to bring remedy branls to the port of chicago they've been in the magazine in chicago in 2009 and continue to promote history of this incident and to continue advocating for the "x" ration of the 49 soldier. >> thank you very much supervisor cowen i'd like to egg over the list of the people that are supportive they were general convincing win

middle above the car you can hardly see a person an extraordinary explosion we were a 50 one organization and exist to show who protested and survived it is important to remember the roles the port chicago navel magazine in winning the second world war guys what were worked out there the african-american men felt they were fighting who two wars one in the united states dealing with racism and the one of the winning the war against foreign enemies what we wanted us to know they were working so hard wanted to know that people the probability they're part in

winning the war we were part of the public voice that advocates to become a national park we worked with the national park service and have an agreement we worked with the bay land for that world-class interpretative centers and continue to work for the "x" ration for the which i 50 we don't see it as a real mutt i didn't there was something that happened they decided they realized they're going back marking towards the ships the load it won't stop not planned so i want to say thank you for
