i want to welcome everybody to the 2019 small business week awards. honors and support for san francisco small businesses through a series of educational network events to connect the business community. small business week is part of a national celebration of contributions of small businesses and entrepreneurs. san francisco takes great pride in the largest el operation of small business week in the united states. over 3,000 small businesses are participating. we have a lot of distinguished guests and some city

commissioners. commissioner dwight and laguana and do we have any other city officials here this morning? we also have a representative from scott weiner's office here this morning. i also would like to thank our sponsors who make this event possible. not only do they support our events fiscally but share knowledge and expertise which so many small businesses on different levels. with them small business week reaches more than 3,000 small business owners every year. i want to acknowledge our presenting sponsor bank of america. our inspire san francisco host is comcast business. forum hosts are the office of small business, pacific gas & electric, post mates, san

[applause.] >> good morning, everyone. welcome. i am the san francisco small business banking manager at bank of america. on behalf of our company and employees he says especially the ones in san francisco for the sixth year in a year thank you for being here this morning. san francisco is an amazing

city. it is one that we can be proud to work and live in. it is booming and in a large part to business owners like yourself. when you look around, we have thousands of small business owners working every day to make the city a thriving and unique city itself. you know, when i look at the people of san francisco and the city, we are a beacon not only to the nation but to the rest of the world. let me tell you about bank of america in case some of you haven't heard of us. i know we are getting a little bigger, not too much. we started right here in san francisco in 1904. small businesses and families in 1906 after the earthquakes a lot of banks couldn't open their doors. they financed the golden great

bridge when i love to look at every day. it is an iconic image. it was right in the great depression when a lot of banks could not show up or would not lend. in 1958 we issued the first ever credit card, bank of america card. we have continued to grow by providing financial services to families and businesses of all sizes. around the country bank of america is doing a great job providing capital small businesses. we had $8.6 billion in loans. we are the number one small business lender in the country. $36.3 billion of originating loans. we are one of the top sba. $275 million of 504 and 7a loans.

what i am most proud of is the investment we make in our communities. we are the largest investor in the community development financial institutions in the country. we have invested over $1.5 billion to over 260 cities across all 50 states. it is a huge investment, and we have committed another $50 million to thetory burch foundation program. 180 women business owners in 16 states received loans. i am proud that bank of america does support small businesses locally and around the country, but here in california i am pleased to share that we have funded over $475 million in small business lending. we have 111 financial centers and 4200 employees dedicated to make our clients' lives better. enough about us.

let's talk about the san francisco small business community. i wanted to share some information that i hope you will find very useful. every six months bank of america conducts a report, the small business outlook report. we get data from business owners in san francisco and across the country. our report was released last week. i would like to share details with you. according to the report, san francisco entrepreneurs outlook over the next 12 months hold strong and steady. many anticipate growth this coming year. to give you quick facts, 73% of small business owners plan to expand. two-thirds believe revenue will increase in the next 12 months. 30% plan on hiring additional employees, 20% are going to apply for a loan this year. their economic outlook over the

next 12 months is mixed. 53% said the local economy is going to improve. 40% believe on the national economy is going to improve. we are optimistic in the city. the political environment with the merge is one of the largest concerns business owners face. healthcare costs are a source of major apprehension for business owners. we have seen that year-over-year. other concerns are the top of international affairs. the stock market, and the trade tariffs. locally, nearly two out of three san francisco small business owners are predicting digital payments will take over in the next five years. we will see what the future holds for that. that is no surprise. san francisco is innovative.

some are looking forward to see how that translates to action there. hopefully you have heard something that resonated with you, but i encourage you all to take advantage of the events, workshops, seminars that fellow entrepreneurs and professionals and organizations are participating in this week in the small business community. let's take the next few days to learn and setbrate achievements -- celebrate achievements. we will continue to build the community we have here. now it is my honor to introduce our distinguished guest this morning mayor london breed. mayor breed has been helping small be businesses. it is a privilege to announce the winners of did 2019 small business owners.

please welcome mayor london breed. [applause.] >> mayor breed: thank you for being here. it is early in the morning. many of you are hard at work every day to ensure businesses are a success. we appreciate you being with us. i am so excited because i know that there have been a number of challenges that small businesses face in san francisco. when i think about just the layers of fees, increases in rent, healthcare costs and all of the challenges that continue to playing so many small businesses in san francisco, i get really upset because i have been a part of san francisco for so many years and to watch your favorite business close for various reasons, especially because of affordability is sad

and unfortunate. i want you to know along with the great programs that we are already doing like sf shines and disaster relief and so on. we are working on a comprehensive plan to look at ways to reduce city fees for small businesses. now, i understand we don't have control over the rents and some of the other issues you are all facing, but our office of economic and work force development under the leadership oftierretorez to make sure we dt just celebrate small businesses. we do something to help our small businesses financially so you cannot only continue to stay in business but you can grow and thrive. that is what today is all about. now, i don't have a special

announcement for you here today because we want to make sure that we are prepared to roll out something significant to make an impact on all of your businesses, but it is coming. it can't come fast enough. i understand that. today is a day of celebration. today we honor so many incredible small businesses that have just made san francisco so special. just so you know, i still go to the same place for my dry cleaning, same dentist. all of these businesses still exist. i go to a lot of the same restaurants including one i am honoring here today the gold mirror. i was there last night having pasta. i am really excited because when making a decision about who to honor for these awards, it is like your kids. you are not supposed to pick a favorite. you know how that is?

you can't pick a favorite kid but then you pick a favorite. today we are picking favorite businesses. i just wanted to take this opportunity to just say thank you to all of the small businesses and just so you know for the businesses honored here today by members of the board of supervisors, don't think you are not my favorite, too, but you are already taken. today we will be recognizing so many incredible small businesses and their contribution to the city for various reasons. this is just really a way to show appreciate for what you continue to do. we know often times the owners of the businesses are the ones at the businesses every single day from sun up to sundown making it happen. inventory, employee, drama,

customers to make these incredible institutions for our city is something that i know often times doesn't really -- people don't really show appreciation. your customers appreciate you but the city today is showing recognition and appreciation for all that you have done. i want to acknowledge the businesses that i have chosen to honor and just again i love you all, but i wanted to make sure that we chose businesses that have been around san francisco for a really long time that i think are very special and unique to our city, and here we go. >> the first and when i announce your business if you can come up and remain on stage until i am actually done with the nine businesses that i am going to call today. the first category is community

leadership award. i am pleased to honor el rio for this community leadership award. [applause.] is el rio here? i want to say why we are hono honoring el rio. they opened the doors in 1978. ever since then has been an lgbq space welcoming for all. they partner with nonprofits and community-based organizations and offers space for benefits, fundraisers and community events. that is why el rio is chosen for the award and recently an approved legacy business. congratulations to el rio.

[applause.] the second is the community impact award. i have chosen two businesses that i think are absolutely incredible and so unique to san francisco. the new barbershop. [applause.] and thrasher magazine. [applause.] so new bill barbershop is recognized for their commitment to the community. coach murray who i went to high school with is not with us today, but he maintains on and off the field serving as a role model to so many young people. a lot of times the young folks need advice, they go to coach murray and he is an incredible role model.

it is a neighborhood cornerstone to serve as a safe and positive place to get a haircut and get support and mentorship. the second honoree is thrasher magazine. it is recognized for the impact in the sky boarding community. locally and on the -- skateboarding community. they helped expose the sport in a way never done before while maintaining the rawness and excitement that draw so many young people to skateboarding. one of the things i want to do know we have an informal park. we need to look at golden gate park to provide a permanent place to do what i think is absolutely incredible. [applause.] the third award is for community innovation.

i have chosen java beach cafe and poncho via. [applause.] now, can i tell you java beach makes the best sandwiches and poncho via makes the best burritos. this goes to two small businesses that have an innovative way to grow and contribute to the community. java beach transformed the neighborhood with a sit down cafe and now sells their brand of coffee beans which are good and tasty. now they sell them wholesale and travel all over san francisco on lady falcon. some of you have seen the great coffee truck. it is a great place to get coffee in the middle of the day. it is an innovative business.

like i said, some of the best sandwiches. grab some food and walk on the beach and have a picnic at the beach. it is a great cafe for the community and for our city. poncho via is, like i said, please don't tell the other places that make bury toes bur-. they are innovating with mexican recipes for unique flavors. they have their own mission style burrito. you can add mushrooms and garlic. it is an inviting environment. every bite is flavor full. i am glad they have been in

existence since i was a kid. i am grateful for what they continue to do. some of the employees that started with the business are working there. it is incredible. we see them every day. thank you and congratulations to poncho via. [applause.] our fourth category is the business strengthening award. that will go to lipo cocktail lounge and poppen hardware. this goes to two long standing businesses in san francisco that have worked with the city to stay open and grow in san francisco. the cocktail lounge opened on grant avenue in 1937 and has a

reputation as chinatown's best dive bar. lipo's sign has been at the bar's entrance since the beginning. it had fallen into disrepair. in 2017 they worked to restore the sign to our historic standards which is incredible. pop pen house senhardware is a cornerstone in the rest portal neighborhood despite disaster. one year after a fire devastated the storefront, the business bounced back to launch a pop up of the hardware store to generate revenue and keep employees employed. [applause.]

icurrently they are regrowing from a grant from the city. they have been here a long time. we are grateful they are rebuilding and we will do everything we can to support each and every one of you. thank you. [applause.] category five, the last category. this is the heritage or legacy business award. today we are honoring two great institutions in san francisco. tor rays studio and the gold mirra. (applause). let me start with dora. you grew up in san francisco. i grew up kind of in poverty.

it was really challenging when you were graduating from high school to take pictures and you wanted air ring and all of these things. there was nothing i wanted more than to take my senior photos at dora studio. i couldn't do it. we couldn't afford to do it, but, you know, it was like a dream. the people who had the opportunity to take photos there, vibrant colors, graduation photos. all kinds of occasions. did way they make you look in the photos dreamy and magazine like before the filters on the phone. dora is an institution making women and families look beautiful for generations. i am glad to honor the work they

have done onever the years. they are one of the oldest businesses in san francisco. the current owners purchased it in 1951. the photos capture the most memorable moments. we are honored to have them here today. thank you so much. [applause.] last but not least, the gold mira is a favorite. i was there last night and it was packed. it is a lot of families and people from the west side celebrating birthdays and special occasions or just grabbing a quick bite before they go home. they celebrated the 50th anniversary in march this year. everything that this restaurant

offers is handcrafted from the homemade pastas to butchering their own veal. they have been doing this so many years. last night i had tuna tartar which every bite was fresh. it was absolutely amazing. i would say what they do in making their own pasta. everything they do is made with love. thank you to the gold mirra for continuing to pass down generation to generation the management of this incredible institution in san francisco. [applause.] all right. i want to say thank you to all of the folks here today, all of the other small businesses to be recognized shortly. to the commissioners and people

who make, you know, doing business in san francisco a lot more fun. yes, it is challenging. change is coming. we will work better, we will work well together to ensure success for the small business community in the future. i want to congratulation all the honorees. green business program and environmental energy saving programs award. [applause.] >> this is sharp. i have to make sure i don't drop it or fall on it. excuse me. it is a lovely award. i am so excited to have this opportunity to present this award for innovative green leadership to a business that goes above and beyond in terms what they do for the planet and the community. buy right family of businesses is a member of the green business program since 2010. they meet a high set of environmental standards around watery deduction, waste reduction, energy efficiency, transportation and pollution prevention. one thing i want to highlight which i found out yesterday.

they are diverting 84% of the waste from land full and have a goal of reaching zero waste by 2024. if you are like me and you have walked into the store in the neighborhood, they are leaders in sourcing food that is good for the planet and good for us. almost all of what i see in the store is local, organic, made without using unnecessary hormones, which has a lot of benefits. buy rite for years are leaders in sustain ability. last year they upped the game to up their game and save money. they partnered with pg&e and installed low flow valves in syncs and updated lighting in

all stores which led to 64,000-kilowatt hours reduced last year. in context that is like reducing the greenhouse gas emissions from a car driven 110,000 miles really impactful. [applause.] >> they are an inspiration showing us it is possible and profitable to run a company in a way that benefits the environment and benefits our community. that is why i am so honored to present the 2019 green business award in recognition of innovative green leadership through pg&e programs to the family of businesses. congratulations and thank you for all that you do. come on up.

[applause.] good morning. how is everyone doing? cool. it is kind of surreal to be unhere. unup here. these are businesses i grew up with. my neighborhood hardware store and many a drunken night drinking the bur burrito. they are amazing businesses that are important to our community fabric. i am honored to be recognized and have buy rite recognized for the work towards commitment to

the planet. we are recognized to the commitment to feeding our community, but take a step to choice for our energy work and reduction work is a great honor. i need to acknowledge two people to help make it happen. nikki flannigan was an amazing partner navigating the program. she partnered with jennifer wang in the city of san francisco. jenner had every detail and made sure that we were just escorted through the process and were able to achieve the highest efficiency to make it happen in a very effective timeframe.

i want to shout out to the city. without the programs we wouldn't be able to make these steps forward. i believe that mayor breed is doing a lot for the small business community. thank you very much. [applause.] i want to acknowledge our general manager who was super-patient as the contractors came in to do the bulb changeouts to make sure our guests and staff were interrupted as little as possible. it is a team effort with everything we do. thank you all. >> i would like to introduce diana to present the micro enter enterprise of the year award. [applause.] >> good morning. i am with the economic development agency. i am trying to be careful. i am honored to present the award every year we have the opportunity to give the micro enterprise of the year to one small business that we consider deserved. we can't picked favorites. unfortunately this year the clan cannot be present. i would like to say a few words.

they have served in 2012 for working out of their incubator. after being accepted they started with a food truck every friday in sf. they moved to catering. then in 2015 they took advantage to open the small kiosk in downtown sf. in 2017 they had the opportunity to look for their own location. it took two for that dream. last year i was there for the grand opening. for the past two years i worked to see the dream come true. i know all of the hassles they had to go through to see this accident come true. what i would say is most important about the business. we are dedicated to ensure all

employees are paid and treated fairly. they have emergency child care fund which for a small business is truly amazing. i would say stop by the location on 1001 howard street. it is on the corner of howard and sixth street. they have amazing moments. thank you so much. >> thank you. next up. julie with the small business administration. she is the director and she is here to present the sba awards. >> i, too, will try not to break this before the actual presentation. good morning and happy small business week. (applause). >> if small business administration is charged with helping small business. that is our soul mission in life. we offer a lot of different programs to do that and once a year we try to celebrate everything wonderful about our small business business across the country. i love the stories. congratulations do all the award winners. i am excited to announce the northern california small business persons of the year. >> when you look at access.

looking apartment revenue, looking how they are hiring employees and exporting. there is a philosophical reason for success. how well they treat their employees and maybe they are committing to environmental sustainability. >> this company hitstule ever the marks, checks all the boxes. they are divided between marin and sonoma counties. they are three sisters that know home to business. they took over from parents. we have a lot of long standing businesses. you think about succession planning. does the next generation want to jump into the family business? they pivoted the business from a dairy farm into a cheese

production company that is also very environmentally possible. they want to honor to sustain the land they grew up on and they will you please. we take those practices. >> we diana, lynn, and jill. they were nominated by our capital access. we have jacqueline and claudia. thank you. they were nominated because of not just the numbers but the way the company is giving back to the community and really honoring and sustaining the land they grew up on and their farming practices. they also were recipient of the sba504 loan last year. $7.8 million loan to build out the state of production facility in petaluma that i had a chance

to tour. lynn took me to the cheese room with the aging cheeses. we did not embarrass myself but i would have gone crazy if she turned around a second. the boy employs over 85 people and are making over 1 million pounds of cheese abilitily. it started with blue cheese and have expanded to other types. they added agro tourism. they can do educational events. so you can understand what it is like and how they are sustaining and treating the land so you can support their values. i have two of the sisters today. it is jim and diana. [applause.]

they are joining us. i want to thank you so much. thank you. >> good morning. thank you so much. i am diana. i just want to say on behalf of my sisters lynn and jill, thank you so much to the small business administration for this honor. it is really exciting for us to be here and representing you. next year we celebrate 20 years of cheese making. up until a few years ago we had only had one manufacturing

facility on the farm where we also raise and milk the cows and utilize all of the milk with our cheese-making facility. we have looked at the next phase and how we wanted to grow and where we wanted to grow and have an opportunity to purchase a warehouse in petaluma. we partnered with wells fargo to finance the next phase of growth for us. it is a year we had that new production facility opened and worked out the kings we want to thank sba for helping us to get to the next level. we especially want to thank claudia who nominated us and it has been a pleasure to work with her throughout the whole process. thank you claudia. >> thank you. we have one more special award here this morning. if i could have audrey from the golden gate business association come up on the stage with me, and for the last nine years another small business has been putting on small business week and working with all of us. that is adam strauss and strauss production. i want you to come up on stage here. [applause.] and for nine years adam is dealing with all of us. with all of the different groups in the city, city government, sba, and he has held it together. he is what makes small business

week small business week. he has been doing this for nine years, and i feel this man needed to be honored. i am so glad with audrey here with golden gate business association feels the same week. audrey, all yours. [applause.] there are so many things to say about adam and all of the week that you and your -- work that you and your team have done. it is fantastic for all small businesses in the city. i am not sure how we will do it without you. we will make you proud. for your networking resources for the production of small business week, on behalf of all of us we honor small business champion adam strauss. >> it's great to see everyone kind of get together and prove, that you know, building our culture is something that can be reckoned with. >> i am desi, chair of economic development for soma filipinos. so that -- [ inaudible ] know that soma filipino exists, and it's also our economic platform, so we can start to build filipino businesses so we can start to build the cultural district. >> i studied the bok chase choy

her achbl heritage, and i discovered this awesome bok choy. working at i-market is amazing. you've got all these amazing people coming out here to share one culture. >> when i heard that there was a market with, like, a lot of filipino food, it was like oh, wow, that's the closest thing i've got to home, so, like, i'm going to try everything. >> fried rice, and wings, and three different cliefz sliders. i haven't tried the adobe yet, but just smelling it yet brings back home and a ton of

memories. >> the binca is made out of different ingredients, including cheese. but here, we put a twist on it. why not have nutella, rocky road, we have blue berry. we're not just limiting it to just the classic with salted egg and cheese. >> we try to cook food that you don't normally find from filipino food vendors, like the lichon, for example. it's something that it took years to come up with, to perfect, to get the skin just right, the flavor, and it's one of our most popular dishes, and people love it.

this, it's kind of me trying to chase a dream that i had for a long time. when i got tired of the corporate world, i decided that i wanted to give it a try and see if people would actually like our food. i think it's a wonderful opportunity for the filipino culture to shine. everybody keeps saying filipino food is the next big thing. i think it's already big, and to have all of us here together, it's just -- it just blows my mind sometimes that there's so many of us bringing -- bringing filipino food to the city finally. >> i'm alex, the owner of the lumpia company. the food that i create is basically the filipino-american experience. i wasn't a chef to start with, but i literally love lumpia,

but my food is my favorite foods i like to eat, put into my favorite filipino foods, put together. it's not based off of recipes i learned from my mom. maybe i learned the rolling technique from my mom, but the different things that i put in are just the different things that i like, and i like to think that i have good taste. well, the very first lumpia that i came out with that really build the lumpia -- it wasn't the poerk and shrimp shanghai, but my favorite thing after partying is that bakon cheese burger lumpia.

there was a time in our generation where we didn't have our own place, our own feed to eat. before, i used to promote filipino gatherings to share the love. now, i'm taking the most exciting filipino appetizer and sharing it with other filipinos. >> it can happen in the san francisco mint, it can happen in a park, it can happen in a street park, it can happen in a tech campus. it's basically where we bring the hardware, the culture, the operating system. >> so right now, i'm eating something that brings me back to every filipino party from my childhood. it's really cool to be part of the community and reconnect

with the neighborhood. >> one of our largest challenges in creating this cultural district when we compare ourselves to chinatown, japantown or little saigon, there's little communities there that act as place makers. when you enter into little philippines, you're like where are the businesses, and that's one of the challenges we're trying to solve.

>> undercover love wouldn't be possible without the help of the mayor and all of our community partnerships out there. it costs approximately $60,000 for every event. undiscovered is a great tool for the cultural district to bring awareness by bringing the best parts of our culture which is food, music, the arts and being ativism all under one roof, and by seeing it all in this way, what it allows san franciscans to see is the dynamics of the filipino-american culture. i think in san francisco, we've

kind of lost track of one of our values that makes san francisco unique with just empathy, love, of being acceptable of different people, the out liers, the crazy ones. we've become so focused onic maing money that we forgot about those that make our city and community unique. when people come to discover, i want them to rediscover the magic of what diversity and empathy can create. when you're positive and committed to using that energy,
