hopefully that's what it does in this situation where you know if you're expected to get us back in school by the first day of the next school year, it's more likely to happen. and further, i think this sort of accountability is better than nothing because without this resolution, there is not a deadline for us to hold the board of education to and i think passing this resolution would give the public more of a sense of calm because we know when we should expect to get students back in school if not earlier than that date. thank you. >> clerk: thank you.
6:18 pm
hello, susie. >> yes. thank you. maureen, i'm giving public comment. hi, superintendent matthews, president lopez. i would offer just a perspective as a parent who has an 8th grader. i did give praise to the district. wonderful job giving us all our notice. we were excited to learn where our 8th graders were going to go school on monday. i really think the district went above and beyond in makes that seamless for families. what i want to offer is that in the next four days, a number of my friends are going to be deciding whether to go to private school or whether they go to sfusd and the big question they have is to be frank, they don't necessarily trust that the board is going to follow through with full five days of education in the fall and for working people and
6:19 pm
women in particular who overwhelmingly leaving the workforce, they might choose a sacred heart or adrew if they give them money because they know their kids need to be back in the fall. that's the way i choose to view this. but i have to say i hope you all are talking to actual parents and families because in the next week, they're going to make a decision and i'm a product of san francisco public schools, two of my three kids are in san francisco public schools but parents need to see that there's a commitment to get our kids back in school and it's going to be up to you all to give that clear message tonight. thank you commissioner lam. thank you to all of you for your leadership. i urge you to really show your support today. thank you. >> clerk: thank you.
6:20 pm
hello, sarah. >> can you hear me okay? >> clerk: yes. >> i just want to echo support for commissioner lam's resolution. i want to thank her for this. i'm imploring the board to commit to a full five-day return in the fall. i think that the board has the power to prepare for this right now and anything short of that is just a decision that does not serve our students. if and when we return in the fall, i think this resolution paves the way to get all of our students back in the classroom. and so i don't see any reason why every single commissioner sitting here tonight would not vote yes on this resolution if for anything just to
6:21 pm
demonstrate your commitment to getting our kids back in the classrooms with their teachers by the fall. thank you. >> clerk: thank you. president lopez, that was the 10 minutes. president lopez? >> president lopez: yes. sorry. that was the end? >> clerk: yeah. the 10 minutes. >> president lopez: okay. thank you. as a reminder, we will be bringing this back for action at the april 6th regular meeting of the board and we can have a broader discussion then. section k. board members' reports. item 1, report from community meetings. we'll start with the ad hoc committee on student

aassumement. >> clerk: just a report back from the committee. we had an update on the school reassignment process and kind of got an update and also set up some future conversations where we're going to reach out to the parent advisory county as well as the student advisory counsel and just have more conversations about what's coming and what families are prepared for the process and are ready to engage and we'll be ready next month to make sure families are aware and informed of everything. if that's possible with our changing of our enrollment process for elementary school. >> president lopez: great. thank you, chair boggess. and, next we'll hear from the ad hoc committee on personnel matters, labor relations, and
6:23 pm
affordability. >> thank you, president lopez. the meeting was march fifteenth and we had only one informational item. the ticketing staffing and diversity recruitment prepared by daniel maneses and his crew. some of the good news was that only 11 out of all of our certificated classroom and nonclassroom positions were not filled at the very beginning of the year. so out of 513 were filled and only 11 were not. that's a really good ratio. in terms of diversity, we have 58% of our hires, new hires this past year are people of color which is higher than the state average and higher than most districts. we have goals for recruitment. 60% for diversity. we focused, we newly started to
6:24 pm
focus on pacific islander. some of the pacific islanders candidates we've been focused on and black and latinx candidating to be in our classrooms and i think we need to do a lot more on attracting asian specific candidates because we're lacking in that department. our next meeting is may 15th and we'll be discussing other areas of our staffing in terms of potential staff and supporting staff at schools such as para educators in terms of retention and diversity. >> president lopez: thank you. and, then last, we'll hear from special meeting of the committee as a full. >> okay. so this one is -- we did a lot. so this was and i also want to reiterate to staff, we just did an update on -- or awhile back, we did an update on returning
6:25 pm
to in-person learning kind of made a commitment as a board to do special committee of the whole meetings every -- trying to do those twice a month, although we're going to have spring break. so we'll see what happens. but last month, we had a lot of conversation. we talked about our contract to get asymptomatic testing for district staff and students approved that contract which is very exciting. additionally as far as just been kind of a neat, it was an opportunity to dig in on some questions, so we got information on summer programming and future commitments. so the summer programming part is talking about our plans for summer school. we have extended school year for students with disability its and also partnerships and
6:26 pm
so i encourage parents. already getting excited about summer. we also got a budget update which involves more discussion and unpacking the american rescue plan and that is you know that definitely helps us with our budget. it will allow us to maintain definitely still in the situation where we need to be fiscally. we want to make decisions and so if folks want to know about budget that's how we get some initial conversations.
6:27 pm
then we got an update which is my favorite thing hearing about how we're going to bring students back at the high school level. we have updated information on the district website and also school sites themselves are going to be sharing information directly with family and just also want middle school families to know we're encouraging them to see what they can be can be doing to open up. i just want to look at my notes and when i see all of the things that we're doing, there's just constant updates between our meetings and then i also want to recognize for families, i know it's hard to keep up with things. there's just so much happening and i just want to consistently
6:28 pm
reiterate that president lopez and i are working with our agendas to keep this process moving and then also work with staff to push this information out in other ways as well so families don't have to stay up to get information. on how we can continue to share information about our progress in bringing students back both this spring and this summer. >> president lopez: thank you. so moving on to item 2. board delegates to membership organization. orca to orcf. seeing none. all other reports by board members, remember, we took this

6:30 pm
collins. >> vice president collins: so i guess, you know, we have two. i just -- well i guess i just want to say we've had this ongoing covid memorial adjournment of the families that have been impacted by all that's been going on, but i think now i don't know if there's another adjournment on there, but i also think we should be recognizing the lives that have been lost. and i think now is a very trying time for all of us right now. and so i just wanted to open this up for space for folks to
6:31 pm
just hold space and remembrance for those of us who are going through whatever we're going through and the loss that we're experiencing whether that be covid, the violence that we're seeing or just the hard times that we're having right now and let's all just hold space for a minute of science for folks to be mindful of that. thank you.
