the family members because they see me all the time. they appreciate me. even the local cops, the firemen, you know, i feel at home. i was born in chinese hospital 1954. we grew up dirt poor. our family was lucky to grew up. when i was in junior high, i had a degree in hotel management restaurant. i was working in the restaurant business for probably about 15 years. i started when i was 12 years old. when i got married, my wife had an import business. i figured, the restaurant business, i got tired of it. i said come work for the family business. i said, okay. it's going to be interesting and so interesting i lasted for 30 years.

i'm married i have one daughter. she's a registered nurse. she lives in los angeles now. and two grandsons. we have fun. i got into photography when i was in junior high and high school. shooting cameras. the black and white days, i was able to process my own film. i wasn't really that good because you know color film and processing was expensive and i kind of left it alone for about 30 years. i was doing product photography for advertising. and kind of got back into it. everybody said, oh, digital photography, the year 2000. it was a ghost town in chinatown. i figured it's time to shoot

chinatown store front nobody. everybody on grand avenue. there was not a soul out walking around chinatown. a new asia restaurant, it used to be the biggest restaurant in chinatown. it can hold about a 1,000 people and i had been shooting events there for many years. it turned into a supermarket. and i got in. i shot the supermarket. you know, and its transformation. even the owner of the restaurant the restaurant, it's 50 years old. i said, yeah. it looks awful. history. because i'm shooting history. and it's impressive because it's history because you can't

repeat. it's gone it's gone. >> you stick with her, she'll teach you everything. >> cellphone photography, that's going to be the generation. i think cellphones in the next two, three years, the big cameras are obsolete already. mirrorless camera is going to take over market and the cellphone is going to be better. but nobody's going to archive it. nobody's going to keep good history. everybody's going to take snapshots, but nobody's going to catalog. they don't care. >> i want to see you. >> it's not a keepsake. there's no memories behind it. everybody's sticking in the cloud. they lose it, who cares.

but, you know, i care. >> last september of 2020, i had a minor stroke, and my daughter caught it on zoom. i was having a zoom call for my grand kids. and my daughter and my these little kids said, hey, you sound strange. yeah. i said i'm not able to speak properly. they said what happened. my wife was taking a nap and my daughter, she called home and said he's having a stroke. get him to the hospital. five minutes later, you know, the ambulance came and took me away and i was at i.c.u. for four days.

i have hundreds of messages wishing me get well soon. everybody wished that i'm okay and back to normal. you know, i was up and kicking two weeks after my hospital stay. it was a wake-up call. i needed to get my life in order and try to organize things especially organize my photos. >> probably took two million photos in the last 20 years. i want to donate to an organization that's going to use it. i'm just doing it from the heart. i enjoy doing it to give back to the community. that's the most important. give back to the community. >> it's a lot for the community. >> i was a born hustler.

i'm too busy to slow down. i love what i'm doing. i love to be busy. i go nuts when i'm not doing anything. i'm 67 this year. i figured 70 i'm ready to retire. i'm wishing to train a couple for photographers to take over my place. the younger generation, they have a passion, to document the history because it's going to be forgotten in ten years, 20 years, maybe i will be forgotten when i'm gone in a couple years but i want to be remembered for my work and, you know, photographs will be a

>> my name is alan schumer. i am a fourth generation san franciscan. in december, this building will be 103 years of age. it is an incredibly rich, rich history. [♪♪♪] >> my core responsibility as city hall historian is to keep the history of this building alive. i am also the tour program manager, and i chair the city advisory commission. i have two ways of looking at my life.

i want it to be -- i wanted to be a fashion designer for the movies, and the other one, a political figure because i had some force from family members, so it was a constant battle between both. i ended up, for many years, doing the fashion, not for the movies, but for for san franciscan his and then in turn, big changes, and now i am here. the work that i do at city hall makes my life a broader, a richer, more fulfilling than if i was doing something in the garment industry. i had the opportunity to develop relationships with my docents. it is almost like an extended family. i have formed incredible

relationships with them, and also some of the people that come to take a tour. she was a dressmaker of the first order. i would go visit her, and it was a special treat. i was a tiny little girl. i would go with my wool coat on and my special little dress because at that period in time, girls did not wear pants. the garment industry had the -- at the time that i was in it and i was a retailer, as well as the designer, was not particularly favourable to women. you will see the predominant designers, owners of huge complexes are huge stores were all male. women were sort of relegated to a lesser position, so that, you reached a point where it was a

difficult to survive and survive financially. there was a woman by the name of diana. she was editor of the bazaar, and evoke, and went on and she was a miraculous individual, but she had something that was a very unique. she classified it as a third i. will lewis brown junior, who was mayor of san francisco, and was the champion of reopening this building on january 5th of 1999. i believe he has not a third eye , but some kind of antenna attached to his head because he had the ability to go through this building almost on a daily basis during the restoration and

corrects everything so that it would appear as it was when it opened in december of 1915. >> the board of supervisors approved that, i signed it into law. jeffrey heller, the city and county of san francisco oh, and and your band of architects a great thing, just a great thing. >> to impart to the history of this building is remarkable. to see a person who comes in with a gloomy look on their face , and all of a sudden you start talking about this building, the gloomy look disappears and a smile registers across their face. with children, and i do mainly all of the children's tours, that is a totally different feeling because you are imparting knowledge that they have no idea where it came from,

how it was developed, and you can start talking about how things were before we had computer screens, cell phones, lake in 1915, the mayor of san francisco used to answer the telephone and he would say, good morning, this is the mayor. >> at times, my clothes make me feel powerful. powerful in a different sense. i am not the biggest person in the world, so therefore, i have to have something that would draw your eye to me. usually i do that through color, or just the simplicity of the look, or sometimes the complication of the look. i have had people say, do those shoes really match that outfit?

retirement to me is a very strange words. i don't really ever want to retire because i would like to be able to impart the knowledge that i have, the knowledge that i have learned and the ongoing honor of working in the people's palace. you want a long-term career, and you truly want to give something to do whatever you do, so long as you know that you are giving to someone or something you're then yourself. follow your passion and learn how to enrich the feelings along the way.

[♪♪♪] [♪♪♪] >> so i grew up in cambridge, massachusetts and i was very fortunate to meet my future wife, now my wife while we were both attending graduate school at m.i.t., studying urban planning. so this is her hometown. so, we fell in love and moved to her city. [♪♪♪] [♪♪♪] >> i was introduced to this part of town while working on a campaign for gavin, who is running for mayor. i was one of the organizers out here and i met the people and i fell in love with them in the neighborhood. so it also was a place in the city that at the time that i could afford to buy a home and i wanted to own my own home.

this is where we laid down our roots like many people in this neighborhood and we started our family and this is where we are going to be. i mean we are the part of san francisco. it's the two neighborhoods with the most children under the age of 18. everybody likes to talk about how san francisco is not family-friendly, there are not a lot of children and families. we have predominately single family homes. as i said, people move here to buy their first home, maybe with multiple family members or multiple families in the same home and they laid down their roots. [♪♪♪] >> it's different because again, we have little small storefronts. we don't have light industrial space or space where you can

build high-rises or large office buildings. so the tech boom will never hit our neighborhood in that way when it comes to jobs. >> turkey, cheddar, avocado, lettuce and mayo, and little bit of mustard. that's my usual. >> mike is the owner, born and bred in the neighborhood. he worked in the drugstore forever. he saved his money and opened up his own spot. we're always going to support home grown businesses and he spent generations living in this part of town, focusing on the family, and the vibe is great and people feel at home. it's like a little community gathering spot. >> this is the part of the city

with a small town feel. a lot of mom and pop businesses, a lot of family run businesses. there is a conversation on whether starbucks would come in. i think there are some people that would embrace that. i think there are others that would prefer that not to be. i think we moved beyond that conversation. i think where we are now, we really want to enhance and embrace and encourage the businesses and small businesses that we have here. in fact, it's more of a mom and pop style business. i think at the end of the day, what we're really trying to do is encourage and embrace the diversity and enhance that diversity of businesses we already have. we're the only supervisor in the city that has a permanent district office. a lot of folks use cafes or use offices or different places, but

i want out and was able to raise money and open up a spot that we could pay for. i'm very fortunate to have that. >> hi, good to see you. just wanted to say hi, hi to the owner, see how he's doing. everything okay? >> yeah. >> good. >> we spend the entire day in the district so we can talk to constituents and talk to small businesses. we put money in the budget so you guys could be out here. this is like a commercial corridor, so they focus on cleaning the streets and it made a significant impact as you can see. what an improvement it has made to have you guys out here. >> for sure. >> we have a significantly diverse neighborhood and population. so i think that's the richness

of the mission and it always has been. it's what made me fall in love with this neighborhood and why i >> it was an outdoor stadium for track and field, motorcycle and auto and rugby and cricket located in golden gate park, home to professional football, lacross and soccer. adjacent to the indoor arena. built in the 1920s. the san francisco park commission accepted a $100,000 gift from the estate to build a memorial in honor of pioneers in the area. the city and county of san francisco contributed an

additional $200,000 and the stadium was built in a year. in the 1930s it was home to several colleges such as usf, santa clara and st. mary's for competition and sporting. in 1946 it became home to the san francisco 49ers where they played nearly 25 years. the stayed de yam sat 60,000 fans. many caught game the rooftops and houses. the niners played the last game against the dallas cowboys january 3, 1971 before moving to candlestick park. the stadium hosted other events before demolition in 1989. it suffered damages from the earthquake. it was reconstructed to seat 10,000 fans with an all weather track, soccer field and scoreboards. it hosts many northern california football championship games. local high schools sacred heart

and mission high school used the field for home games. the rivalry football games are sometimes played here. today it is a huge free standing element, similar to the original featuring tall pink columns at the entrance. the field is surrounded by the track and used by high school and college football and soccer. it is open for public use as well. >> it's great to see everyone kind of get together and prove, that you know, building our culture is something that can be reckoned with.

>> i am desi, chair of economic development for soma filipinos. so that -- [ inaudible ] know that soma filipino exists, and it's also our economic platform, so we can start to build filipino businesses so we can start to build the cultural district. >> i studied the bok chase choy heritage, and i discovered this awesome bok choy. working at i-market is amazing.

you've got all these amazing people coming out here to share one culture. >> when i heard that there was a market with, like, a lot of filipino food, it was like oh, wow, that's the closest thing i've got to home, so, like, i'm going to try everything. >> fried rice, and wings, and three different cliefz sliders. i haven't tried the adobe yet, but just smelling it yet brings back home and a ton of memories. >> the binca is made out of different ingredients, including cheese. but here, we put a twist on it. why not have nutella, rocky road, we have blue berry.

we're not just limiting it to just the classic with salted egg and cheese. >> we try to cook food that you don't normally find from filipino food vendors, like the lichon, for example. it's something that it took years to come up with, to perfect, to get the skin just right, the flavor, and it's one of our most popular dishes, and people love it. this, it's kind of me trying to chase a dream that i had for a long time. when i got tired of the corporate world, i decided that i wanted to give it a try and see if people would actually like our food. i think it's a wonderful opportunity for the filipino culture to shine. everybody keeps saying filipino food is the next big thing.

i think it's already big, and to have all of us here together, it's just -- it just blows my mind sometimes that there's so many of us bringing -- bringing filipino food to the city finally. >> i'm alex, the owner of the lumpia company. the food that i create is basically the filipino-american experience. i wasn't a chef to start with, but i literally love lumpia, but my food is my favorite foods i like to eat, put into my favorite filipino foods, put together. it's not based off of recipes i learned from my mom. maybe i learned the rolling technique from my mom, but the different things that i put in are just the different things that i like, and i like to think that i have good taste.

well, the very first lumpia that i came out with that really build the lumpia -- it wasn't the poerk and shrimp shanghai, but my favorite thing after partying is that bakon cheese burger lumpia. there was a time in our generation where we didn't have our own place, our own feed to eat. before, i used to promote filipino gatherings to share the love. now, i'm taking the most exciting filipino appetizer and sharing it with other

filipinos. >> it can happen in the san francisco mint, it can happen in a park, it can happen in a street park, it can happen in a tech campus. it's basically where we bring the hardware, the culture, the operating system. >> so right now, i'm eating something that brings me back to every filipino party from my childhood. it's really cool to be part of the community and reconnect with the neighborhood. >> one of our largest challenges in creating this cultural district when we compare ourselves to chinatown, japantown or little saigon, there's little communities there that act as place makers. when you enter into little

philippines, you're like where are the businesses, and that's one of the challenges we're trying to solve. >> undercover love wouldn't be possible without the help of the mayor and all of our community partnerships out there. it costs approximately $60,000 for every event.

undiscovered is a great tool for the cultural district to bring awareness by bringing the best parts of our culture which is food, music, the arts and being ativism all under one roof, and by seeing it all in this way, what it allows san franciscans to see is the dynamics of the filipino-american culture. i think in san francisco, we've kind of lost track of one of our values that makes san francisco unique with just empathy, love, of being acceptable of different people, the out liers, the crazy ones. we've become so focused onic maing money that we forgot

about those that make our city and community unique. when people come to discover, i want them to rediscover the magic of what diversity and empathy can create. when you're positive and committed to using that energy san francisco mayor london and we are here to swear in stephanie cahina to the sfmta board. i want to thank the heresies from coming to lakeviewto be with us today . you must be somebody really special. i want to acknowledge some of our elected members of the board of supervisors for

. i would just gointo wineries after work every day and have a good time . and this is san francisco, the place she was born and raised in, the label based he grewup getting 14 . and dealing with the challenges of muni. any of you who grew up in san francisco remember the days of muni where we didn't have all this next bus system andall these things where you knew whenthe next bus was coming . we had to look like this . every single time and deal with the challenges of our public transportationsystem . i think that stephanie is going to bring aunique perspective to this body . a unique perspective of someone who lived in the outskirts of san francisco where equity has beenchallenging around public transportation in general .

this body needed a voice of somebody who understands what it feels like to rely on public transportation and to make sure that when the city is talking about the need for central subways and transcends at all these complex systems that there is a voice speaking for those who deserve reliable transportation in san francisco to . [applause] so i am so glad that we have that voice and stephanie and i am so glad about the work and advocacy that you've done over the years in the city she was born and raised in the city she loves and i don't know if just tumlin his ear. she's going to give you tumlin a run forhis money . i think that's going to be great because her perspective perspective of working with the

various coalitions, we have a bicycle coalition but we also have every average everyday people who aren't necessarily actively engaged in a coalition and what i appreciate about stephanie when we had our conversation is a strong desire towant to hear people's perspectives in general . so that she can make good decisions that we need made for the city as a whole. that's what this is about. swearing in someone who's going to represent the very best of all of us and bring all that to the table. and really i think what was really important and what i heard from the latino trinity in particular time and time again is the need to make sure it was representation to supervisor ronen. she remembers when those red lanes appeared overnight in her district and everyone went crazy. this is a large latino

population even though we know the excelsior is as well but the mission in particular is the heartbeat of the latino community and making sure there's a voice that understands some of the challenges that exist in this community which is such an importantpart of the city , an important part of the history and culture but also the economy and making sure they have access to solid public transportation to get around that infrastructure is discussed, it's a job opportunity the linkage between all of what we do to build the city at our transportation network is linked to a lot of these communities. we are part ofthe fabric of the city. with that, let's swear in a new commissioner . i native san franciscan as an opportunity like this to serve their community . the mta, muni in particular was essential for our family to gain access. get to school. become part of the fabric of the community that was so important to us. my family came to san francisco is getting a revolution, a civil war in nicaraguaand we came with a lot of trauma and a lot of pain and san francisco was home . and to now serve on the board, to be a director it was so integral to our success, to our making this place i will. it's such anhonor. it is such an honor. and i'm very grateful to you mayor bree for recognizing that in me .

county of san francisco. and he's with us today to talk about the recent progress of the sunnidale hope sf housing project. welcome to the show. >> good morning. thank you for having me today. >> let's start by talking about the existing residents of sunnydale and their history. >> so sunnydale was built in the 1940s for a workers. it's the largest public housing community west of the mississippi. it's about 50 acres. pretty huge. about 760 single story units one to four bedrooms. >> i understand it's an ambitious rethinking of the residences. can you briefly describe the scope of the program and hope sf's involvement? >> yeah. the work of hope sf is this idea of more than housing. that acknowledging that our public housing community, the

levels of violence and poverty that are in these communities are not by accident. you know, it's our opportunity to address a system issue, you know, that people need more than housing. they need health services. resources. economic investment opportunities, jobs and things of that nature. and so hope sf strives to work with our city systems to better serve our public housing communities. >> so recently, mayor breed and speaker pelosi toured the site to both put focus on a national housing initiative and also to highlight the completion of the first new building. how many units does it contain and when will people start moving in? >> yeah. it was an amazing event. honored to have the secretary here with us as well in our community. it's 167 units. it's about 75% going back to the original families that currently live on site. so the replacement.

so i did forget to mention i want to say real quick, the beauty of hope sf is housing development, new development without displacements or anti-displacement initiatives. so, for example, the building is 167 units. 75% of those units going to families that have lived there in the community for generationings and the other 25% are tax credit units adding to the affordable housing stock here in san francisco and those units are up and running now. they're leasing them as we speak. people are picking their units each week until they're filled up. >> so was this particular building put on a new plot of land or did people have to move out so it could be constructed? >> that's a good question. our first building was vacant which you may have saw across the street from this building and then this plot of land is the way we kind of do it, we do it in phases. once one goes in, we're able to

move families into the new unit and where they previously were occupying, able to demolish old buildings to build the new. so this area had some older units that were demolished. >> it's impressive that construction has been able to continue during the covid-19 pandemic. can you talk about some of the challenges that needed to be overcome and how the community has managed during the crisis? >> that's a great question. you know, in san francisco, if i understand it correctly, i could be wrong, i believe housing was an essential service. the mayor made a strong commitment early on in the pandemic that we would continue to build housing as housing has been a critical issue in our city. so the housing part hasn't impacted us too much. 67 units have been going on its current time line. the bigger challenge for us was

showing the families in our communities, low income families had the resources we need to survive the pandemic. many of our families didn't have the luxury of working from home, working in the zone and things of that nature. making sure they had access to covid testing and things of that nature. so i want to give a big shout out to our resident leaders, our service providers across all four sites. for those that don't know, hope sf is four sites. sunnydale is one of the four sites. and so across those four sites, the most critical thing was making sure folks in these neighborhoods which have historically have been disconnected from resources have the things that they need to remain healthy, to, you know, survive the pandemic as we all had to survive the pandemic and we did pretty well. we were able to bring back scenes and covid testing on

site. food distribution was happening all throughout the week. wellness services and things of that nature were all happening on site thanks to our resident leaders and our service providers across the sites. >> so, finally, when could we expect the next set of residents to be ready? despite -- i guess we just said covid doesn't have an impact on the schedule. when will the next residences be ready? >> yeah. things are rolling. we have block a3 and block b3 to the building we were referring to earlier. and things are on pace. things are going really well. so we're looking at starting construction spring of 2022 and that will be 170 units and the goal is to have that lease up around 2024. >> well, thank you so much. i really appreciate you coming on the show, mr. gray. thank you for giving us the time today. >> thank you, chris, and i

really it is fun hi, i'm one the owners and is ceo of cafe trespassing in north beach many people refer to cafe trees as a the living room of north beach most of the clients are local and living up the hill come and meet with each other just the way the united states been since 1956 opposed by the grandfather a big people person people had people coming since the day we opened. >> it is of is first place on the west that that exposito 6 years ago but anyone was doing that starbuck's exists and it created a really welcoming pot. it is truly a legacy business but more importantly it really at the take care of their community my father from it was formally

italy a fisherman and that town very rich in culture and music was a big part of it guitars and sank and combart in the evening that tradition they brought this to the cafe so many characters around here everything has incredible stories by famous folks last week the cafe that paul carr tennessee take care from the jefferson starship hung out the cafe are the famous poet lawrence william getty and jack herb man go hung out. >> they work worked at a play with the god fathers and photos he had his typewriter i wish i were here back there it there's a lot of moving parts the meeting spot rich in culture and artists and musicians

>> good morning everyone. i am mayor london breed. i want to welcome you today to talk about the election last night and the results as well as talk about today being the first day that we have lifted some restrictions as it relates to indoor masking. last night, during the race the voters sent a clear message, a clear message as it relates to the school board and the need to begin the process to refocus on our children and on what is most important in their lives and what is most important for the future of our schools in san francisco. i want to take this opportunity to thank the parents and the

grassroots organizers who pulled this together and called attention to some of the challenges that exist with the school district. i want to thank the educators who continued to show up and to try to work with our students despite a very challenging two years. i really want to take this opportunity to talk a little bit about our next steps and what we plan to do because although we may think that as a result of this election that this is behind us, there is even more important work that needs to be done moving forward. over the past couple of weeks, i have had a number of conversations with a number of parents throughout san francisco. parents that aren't necessarily politically engaged.

parents who struggled, whose kids struggled. the asian community and latino community, geographically throughout san francisco, parents who really felt that they were left out of the process when schools were struggling to reopen during this pandemic. many of them talked about a lot of the challenges that exist in their lives. that is really where our focus should have always been. kids usually vibrant and talkative more subdued and quiet and seeing the changes in their kids and struggles they are going through. talking to parents with children with significant learning challenges, those with disabilities and other issues and seeing the rapid decline in

their children as a result of what sadly had been happening not just with the school district but with the pandemic has really been tough for them. it was hard to hear the stories and hard to hear some of the challenges the parents were facing. more importantly, what was made clear to me is their feedback what they want to see in a new member or members of the school board. they want to focus on the fundamental responsibility of the school district. that is to make sure that we educate our children. education and the system around education has to be at the for front of everything we do. when we think about the learning loss, mental health challenges, that has to be our focus.

talking with a number of educators about what they were experiencing in the classroom and frustration about inconsistent information. i am concerned about all parties involved. in selecting new school board members we are asking a lot of very hard questions. what are we going to do for those kids who have learning disabilities? what are we going to do for the kids with special needs? what are we going to do for the kids who don't have parent advocates? how are we going to focus on the challenges around learning loss? how are we going to deal with the challenges around gaps relating to equity? so many questions, so many concerns. how are we going to deal with the budget deficit for the school system? one that is increasingly growing. a new superintendent is expected

to be hired. those decisions are critically important to the long term success of the school district. there are immediate things to address right now today, long-term we have seen a significant decline in enrollment in the public school system. school assignment has to be revamped in a way that again is done fairly and equitably. a number of these challenges we are looking for well-rounded school board members who are focused on the schools. who are focused on our children and their success. who are focused on collaboration and working together. who are focused on wanting to hear from different perspectives whether they are in agreement with those perspectives or not.

bridge builders. that is what we are going to look for. this is all coming from many of the parents i had an opportunity to talk to. questions that these parents provided me with and want be me to ask of the people that i am going to be interviewing and to be clear. i am going to be meeting with aa number of people to have the conversation around why they think that they would be the best person for the job. you know, i made appointments before for this city on a number of bodies, including school board. this is probably one of the hardest decisions that i have ever had to make as it relates to appointments because of the significants of what this means and what the people of san francisco expect from the people that i will appoint.

because of the future and the concerns about our kids. none of us knew we would be in the midst of a global pandemic. there wasn't a playbook for this. when we think about what happened in san francisco and what we did, our early action to save lives. we were a model for the country, and the number of people whose lives were safed and the number of people fully vaccinated and boosted and we should be proud. the stark contrast to what happened in the school district. the frustration, uncertainty, inconsistent information, lack of clarity, bickering, politics and who suffered the most? our children. they suffered the most.

they are still suffering. we have to put aside all personality conflicts and we have to focus our attention on addressing what is most important, and be that is their future. i met with a lot of parents. there are a lot of parents out there that can't be advocates for their kids. they may not know how. i can't help but think if this pandemic had happened when i was a kid when my grandmother was raising me, a woman who never had the opportunity to come to the school if i got in trouble i had to get sent home. i think about those kids who don't have the parents who have the time because they are

working two or three jobs or those parents who may feel uncomfortable with speaking out because of their immigrant status or a number of issues. those kids in abusive homes. i think about all of those kids who don't have advocates, who don't have that level of support that they need and school was in some cases their only outlet. there are going to be a number of heavy conversations in the coming weeks because the decision that i may being is going to be important. it is going to be important because of the short term and long-term challenges the school board faces. what is next? what is next is there are votes to be counted. department of elections anticipates that they will be

finished counting votes by next week. end of next week. once they certify the results they will forward that information to the board of supervisors, and the board of supervisors will meet to approve the election results, certify the results. that process is expected to take somewhere close to a month. in that time i will be interviewing candidates. there is a lot of work to continue to be done. we will do everything to work with the school district. once a vacancy occurs that is when i will have an opportunity to appoint and my hope is that i could make a decision that sanfranciscans can be proud of d

feel the school district is in good hands. it will require patience and development clearly of new found trust because of what is experienced. so we have still a process involved, still time that we need to take. time where my focus will be on reaching out meeting with folks and doing everything i can to make the best decision for the kids of our city. with that i wanted to just talk a little bit about the mask mandate. today officially the masks are no longer required in places like restaurants, bars, offices, movie theaters, museums and indoor settings for vaccinated people. people can still wear their

masks. in fact i know people will still wear their masks and there may be some businesses that still may require you to wear your mask. please don't get into arguments about whether or not you are required to wear your mask or not. it is a hard time for all of us. if a business asks you to wear a mask, wear a mask or choose another business. let's understand this is challenging. i know some of our regulations have been confusing. one minute you are wearing a mask then you are and then you are not. we are in this together. we have a lot to be proud of. as i said, a leader in the country related to saving lives in a global pandemic we could not predict. we should be proud. this is the homestretch.

numbers have declined in hospitalizations and the number of people impacted. my hope as we begin to change that and people are boosted and vaccinated. masks may not be required in some other settings like schools and hospitals and jails where they still respect required. continue to be patient with us. continue to be patient with the businesses all over the city. we will get through this. thank you. >> can you speak to the concerns some may have around that? >> what i will speak to is there is always conversations around money and politics.

at the end of the day what we see in the election results it is clear that many of these san franciscans are more concerned about our children and what has been happening with the school district and distransactions and lack of focus and what is more important than they are about our children. what is my focus is the children first and four most. whoever is selected will focus on trying to turn the school district around. focus specifically on public school and enrollment apsome of the challenges that exist there. the point that you made is something that is news to me because the fact is there are a lot of different kinds of people involved in the push for this recall from all walks of life.

to attribute to one group of people is not fair to the work that so many grassroots people who have children in the public school systems have done. >> i am not disqualifying anyone at this time. i am going to meet and talk to as many people i can that with serve the san francisco unified school district well and focus on the public schools and our children. [indiscernable] >> i think, you know, i do not regret my decision to appoint foga to the school board.

foga had a lot of skills in working with communities that are on the southeast sector of the city. many people advocated for him as a voice for them. i made that decision. he was running already. he had a lot of support and especially a lot of support from many of the communities struggling in the school district. i don't regret the decision i may being. in this particular process i will think about the same thing. thinking about those same communities in the decision i make and thinking about, you know, more in depth people who have more in depth knowledge of, for example, what i heard from parents. they want someone who understands finance. the financials. they are concerned about the budget deficit and what that might mean for their children. having people who understand

budget and who have knowledge of not just community but who have the qualifications to understand how an organization is run. hiring and budgeting and there is a lot of different components to this. those are things that are added to the conversation in addition to some of the things i look for in previous candidates. >> do you think given the results 70 something plus of the recall that san francisco and san franciscans are moving less in the direction of having progressive ideas and more towards moderate and liberal ideas? >> i don't think so. our children suffered. it is not about politics. it is not about having progressive or moderate or

liberal idea. it is about my kid used to be a kid that was social and fun and is now quiet and sad and doesn't smile. you as the parent feel like there is nothing you can do about that because of what is happening with your child's education. at the end of the day this is about what was happening. we are not saying some of the things at the school district weren't important conversations to have. i think renaming schools and looking at the history of the names is important. the problem was the clear communication around when schools would open and how during the process of distance learning we would deal with those challenges of kindergarten not signing in and issues happening at hand.

the fact those weren't put front and center and solutions weren't focused on there is what drove this decision. that is what i heard from the people i talked to. it wasn't about progressive or liberal. i think it minimizes is hard work so many people did to get this on the ballot to get it past by trying to attribute it to that. >> the chinese american community reasserting its political power. >> sorry. >> was yesterday's recall was the chinese american community reasserting it goes political power in the city? >> these are people fighting for their children. i can't say that enough. the storyis heard over the past

couple weeks would have brought you to tears. imagine if it were your child and you didn't have money to put them in private school or anything which most of the private schools were open and your kid is struggling. this came from a different place. this came from parents who were upset and frustrated and stressed out and in many cases trying to work two or three jobs to take care of their kids. single moms and grandmothers afternoon grandfathers. this was from my perspective not about politics. >> how are you going to ensure the picks you make are independent and not be holden to you. there is concern you might have

too much influence over the school board instead of the voters. >> that is unfair in terms of assessment. i feel confident my history of appointments demonstrates that i willing to work with people who have a different ideology than i do in order to make what i believe is the best decision based on input. one of my first picks worked for someone who actually ran for mayor. we ran against one another. i think that at the end of the day, i am a san franciscan. i love the city. i will make a decision in the best interest of the entity and best interest of the city. that will involve feedback from people who really -- parents especially, teachers, educators

as well -- having well rounded feedback and number to choose from that are going to be important. that is my focus. my hope is they are people who will work with me and work with the city. we want to partner with the cool district. you have come to us and we have gone to them. we want someone to work with us so we can help support our children. >> do you have a position? are you open to changes? >> i think that it is the wrong message right now. these people worked really hard. this was a very grassroots effort. i think that people should have the ability if they have a concern with any elected leader. they should have the right to

take a recall effort to the ballot. it is unfortunate. to put this on the ballot is very unfortunate. >> you are a part of children and families staying in the budget. so much per household. how will you keep housing affordable so the state comes in to fund the school board. >> changes to the am location so it is not based on individual student enrollment. they are looking at different formulas. san francisco is an i very expensive place to live. one solution is to build more housing remove the barriers that obstruct our ability to do so

and recently the housing measure to speed up housing production was rejected by the board of supervisors. we can't keep saying we want more affordable and more housing and the decisions we make are counter to that. thank you everybody. . >> the san francisco carbon fund was started in 2009. it's basically legislation that was passed by the board of supervisors and the mayor's

office for the city of san francisco. they passed legislation that said okay, 13% of the cost of the city air travel is going to go into a fund and we're going to use the money in that fund to do local projects that are going to mitigate and sequester greenhouse gas emission. the grants that we're giving, they're anywhere from 15,000 to, say, $80,000 for a two year grant. i'm shawn rosenmoss. i'm the development of community partnerships and carbon fund for the san francisco department of environment. we have an advisory committee that meets once or twice a year to talk about, okay, what are we going to fund? because we want to look at things like equity and

innovative projects. >> i heard about the carbon fund because i used to work for the department of environment. i'm a school education team. my name is marcus major. i'm a founding member of climate action now. we started in 2011. our main goal it to remove carbon in the public right-of-way on sidewalks to build educational gardens that teach people with climate change. >> if it's a greening grant, 75% of the grant has to go for greening. it has to go for planting trees, it has to go for greening up the pavement, because again, this is about permanent carbon savings. >> the dinosaur vegetable gardens was chosen because the garden was covered in is afault since 1932. it was the seed funding for

this whole project. the whole garden,ible was about 84,000 square feet, and our project, we removed 3,126 square feet of cement. >> we usually issue a greening rft every other year, and that's for projects that are going to dig up pavement, plant trees, community garden, school garden. >> we were awarded $43,000 for this project. the produce that's grown here is consumed all right at large by the school community. in this garden we're growing all kinds of organic vegetables from lettuce, and artichokes. we'll be planting apples and loquats, all kinds of great fruit and veggies. >> the first project was the dipatch biodiesel producing facility. the reason for that is a lot of

people in san francisco have diesel cars that they were operating on biodiesel, and they were having to go over to berkeley. we kind of the dog batch preferentials in the difference between diesel and biodiesel. one of the gardens i love is the pomeroy rec center. >> pomeroy has its roots back to 1952. my name is david, and i'm the chamber and ceo of the pomeroy rehabilitation and recreation center. we were a center for people with intellectual and development cal disabilities in san francisco san francisco. we also have a program for individuals that have acquired brain injury or traumatic brain injury, and we also have one of the larger after school programs for children with

special needs that serves the public school system. the sf carbon fund for us has been the launching pad for an entire program here at the pomeroy center. we received about $15,000. the money was really designed to help us improve our garden by buying plants and material and also some infrastructure like a drip system for plants. we have wine barrels that we repurposed to collect rain water. we actually had removed over 1,000 square feet of concrete so that we could expand the garden. this is where our participants, they come to learn about gardening. they learn about our work in the greenhouse. we have plants that we actually harvest, and eggs from our chickens that we take up and use in cooking classes so that

our participants learn as much as anybody else where food comes from. we have two kitchens here at the pomeroy center. one is more of a commercial kitchen and one is more setup like a home kitchen would be, and in the home kitchen, we do a lot of cooking classes, how to make lasagna, how to comsome eggs, so this grant that we received has tremendous value, not only for our center, for our participants, but the entire community. >> the thing about climate, climate overlaps with everything, and so when we start looking at how we're going to solve climate programs, we solve a lot of other problems, too. this is a radical project, and to be a part of it has been a real honor and a privilege to work with those administrators with the sf carbon fund at the department of environment. >> san francisco carbon grant

[applause] lunar new year is about gathering of families. we have all done that. looking around the room a number of you are not asian pacific americans. today you are because we appreciate you being here to celebrate with us. in the last year or year and a half in the asian communities we have been encouraging each other to speak up, stand up because of anti-asian hate at the san francisco human rights commission. we also have talked a lot about standing together. we shouldn't stand together and support each other, connect this event today. not only as we kickoff the whole year of cultural celebrations in the city, but we want all of you to have an opportunity to connect a number of you just told me earlier this afternoon this was the first time you were in city hall in two years.

not just during lunar new year but year around. to really highlight the importance of the api community in san francisco. one of the things claudine mentioned that is really impactful to me is, sadly, when we started to experience a lot of the hate and the deviciveness and the attacks on the community. the heritage foundation started to build bridges with a number of cross cultural events. they have embedded the work around cross-cultural relationships in their programming year around. i want to thank claudine for leadership and work and advocacy of bringing our communities together to understand one another, to learn about one another's culture and uplift and appreciate one another. i remember when i was in high school. we always had all kinds of

assemblies about the taiwan or chinese or black community just to understand and see just our cultures on full display sparked interest and discussion and understanding. it also sparked togetherness. today we are joined by some of our asian countries. council generals. i want you all to stand when i announce the council general from korea, japan, philippines, indonesia, singapore, mongolia and vietnam. .applause. and china. building relationships with not just the communities in san

thank you. >> every year we have been unveiling stamps in san francisco since 1992. i was reminded by my good friends this is the 13th anniversary of the historic announcement of the issue of set of stamps honoring chinese and asian-american cultural heritage in december of 1992. this year's unveiling has special meaning. we hope next year that the national birthday of issue will be in san francisco. it is 30 years of history. something we are proud of. it is a very tiny stamp. a stamp is an instrument of communication. it represents so many more people to learn about the lunar calendar, what it means, whether

they agree or don't agree, what to do on a particular day. there is a lot of history on the lunar calendar. we are happy to have the second postmaster with us today. the acting postmaster of san francisco starting in postal service as letter carrier. over the years he has been operational managers and customer service. after that the postmaster of oakland. now we are happy to have you as the acting postmaster of san francisco. we are having stamp sales outside. after the event feel free to go and if you haven't purchased your stamps, please do to so. let's welcome the acting postmaster. good evening, everyone. thank you for the kind introduction. i am postmaster of san francisco. i am happy to be here on behalf of the post office for the year of the tiger stamp. i would like to thank our speakers, mayor breed, commissioner chang. board president walton and customers and leaders for joining us today. i want to take this opportunity to thank the national organization oca and several local organizations for continued support. in china the tradition of celebrating new year's began thousands of years ago. the crops and livestock the villages were on the night before the new year. in some versions of the story
