around town meeting people in san francisco and feeling the hospitality 've the city this it is a fabulous city and so welcoming. fleet week is a community event. it is an event with a plan and all of the operations are volunteers from neighborhoods. city hall the city, we are thankful for their help we will hear from city officials. this year our air show thankfully united airlines was gashs enough to help us with the [inaudible] side the air show will have 2, f-35's the most advanced aircraft in the world. and pilots that guide them and the blue angels will be happening down on the marina drenal you see the human tear yen assistance and stem

education center. fleet week is pervasive throughout the city. off the waterfront in the neighborhoods. saturday the t-9 her over freshman 10 to 2 at debose park. this band will appear there. support our k-9 heros. check out all of overhaul events the great things fleet week has. look at our website you see everything happening. i will pass it on to the mayor who is supportive, what a great friend to the military and fleet week. mayor london breed. thank you. good afternoon i'm san francisco mayor london breed i'm so happy to be here to sick off fleet week in our city! you know float week is a time honored tradition in san

francisco. we know every year during october, all of the sudden we hear the planes flying through. but fleet week is in the about the extraordinary talent of the blue angel its is so much more. about developing a relationship with our military, the people who put their lives on the line to make sure that we retain the rights and freedoms we enjoy in the united states of america. when i think about how wonderful fleet week is to see folks walking in uniforms and the time they take to talk about the work they do. the opportunity to visit the ships and tour and know the sacrifices that are being made, day in and out, people who are not able to be around families regular low wlo are spending their time every day to serve and protect us. and when we appreciate about fleet week other than loving the

blue angel system how it is expanded and become such a community event. how it brought people together weather the band in japantown and all over the city and the castro for the first time this year; [applause]... it is also all of the various events the parade of ships. excitement. last year was the first time that after the pandemic we were able to get together in person for fleet week. let me tell you the city was packed. people were excited. lines to see the ships and conversations and people smiling and excited all over san francisco not just san francisco but people visiting from all overnight bay area and the country. this is a great event. it is also an opportunity to, yes, celebrate our military.

celebrate the folk who is make sure the waters are protected, navy, marines. the coast guard, it it is an opportunity for us to remember that san francisco such a major city is also our quick prone. also disaster prone. and so we have to get prepared. we do have our police chief. bill scott and fire chief and our head of the department of emergency management mar ellen carol and others who are running regular drills with our military. to make sure that when because it is in the a matter of if, it is when we are faced with a natural disaster or other disaster that we are prepared to work together to keep the people of this city safe. so, i want all of to you go sf72. org and check on your neighbors. know your neighbors the pandemic

gave us an opportunity to know each other better than before. at the end of the day we want to make sure we are able to protect one another. that's what all the people here in uniform do every day. they put their lives on the line to serve and protect each one of us. and so on behalf of the city and county of san francisco, i like to ask admiral bask to come up and accept this proclamation. we are now official low not only kickoff fleet week in san francisco but it is considered officially fleet week in the city and county of san francisco, inform for being here to celebrate this auspicious occasion in our city. all right. let's get going! i do introduce. okay. so it it is now my pleasure to introduce the executive director for the port of san francisco and i said, there will be ships and tours and lots of activities. don't forget to eat at our restaurant s and shop and enjoy what san francisco has to offer. new partialers open. san francisco will be so exciting during fleet week i hope you will join you and the person this manages the port for the city san francisco is e lane forbes. >> thank you mayor breed. i want to echo comments, welcome to fleet week. the water front is open, it is exciting and thrilling we cannot wait to welcome the young men and women in service to say

thank you. buy them a bore. have a good time. enjoy the water front. welcome people who sacrifice for our country and keep us safe. i'm very happy to thank the navy. marine core, coast guard and the army core who are keeping our waterfront and city safe. sea services and our city departments the chiefs of police, chief of fire. director of emergency management and our director of public works carla short, we work together and we work in a fashion that has manageds behind us. we get ton each other before we are on the battlefield and the groups come together strongly in terms how we set mission. who is responsible of huwe set strategy and deploy am. because of the hard work being an exciting in person event we dot own in person emergency

preparation. and that's what make this is event so important to our city. i want to go become to our water front because it has the best vows. best food and experience of san francisco. we have our navy vessels here. historic finger pearce are amazing and demonstrate a rich maritime history. we have an exceptional experience for everyone who is coming. i want to welcome everyone and welcome now the director of our emergency management departmentful she used manageds and worked hard in the covid pandemic and now she is keeping us appropriated for natural disasters like earthquakes. with that mary ellen carol. happy that we have we are back to normal. ish. and can have float week again. i want to echo the comments that everyone said and that everyone already said including our mayor. fleet week is an extraordinary week we are entering in the d. emergency management and other public safety partners coit year round what we do is what has been referenced already is our emergency preparedness exercises. so this year we focus a different skill or asset and this year we looked at air operations. transportation lines could be cut off. could have different areas of the city like islands our ability to do air operations is critical in an earthquake or

sdaft they're affects our infrastructure. i want to thank my partner who i will introduce here admiral days for his partnership. thank the emergency managers and i want to thank float week sf and the staff there that does coordination. all my city partners and all of our military partners that criminal we're luck tow have this relationship that we can develop we know who to call and that our -- our responders are working throughout the year with our military partners we don't have to figure this out in the moment. we are proud of that. with ha, i will bring on the admiral to talk about the work. [applause]

>> all right. wow. this is intim dath. thank you mayor and colleagues for letting me be a part of this today. again. my title is commander expedition. the reason i'm talking i'm in charge of naval forces. my honor to speak on behalf of service members out in the communities for those here last year, the restart of in person fleet week was an epic success. do you agree? yea. it was pretty cool and thanks to the generosity and spirit of the

city why it was successful. this year will be bigger, better and more epic. more shipps. different types coming. we did this so you see something new. a parade and open tours during the week. navy, marine bands playing throughout the community. sporting events, team building and social events going of displays of military equipment. aircraft and ships and also the equipment we use with crisis response and finishing to natural disasters you will see that and we have noticing group. the blue angels, whatever. they are pretty cool i'm a helecopter guy. they are notice and back. that is in the when the most cool is we are bringing a lot of young sailors usual marines and coast guard men and women to get out in your community and that's important to me that is what fleet week is about. yea celebrating the members and commitment is important. but more important is you know our service members what they are about and bh they do. guess what, we work for you. military works for citizens. when you see us out in the community, and you rescue noise us because of the sterling uniforms and the short cuts. say, hi, ask us hard questions about when we do it is

important. i think when you see the folks you will be impressed like i am. >> we mention today fleet week is fun and doing hard work. we talked about the training. this is us the military working with your emergency respondors the police, fire, pork medical people. emergency response agencies what we do is hone our skills to respond in times of natural disaster together and effectively. i done missions like this they are hard you have to practice like everything. we did this last year. and again thissier and keep doing that. i will start where i finished and say thanks to the warm hospitality. and all the high 5's on the streets i appreciate it. and thank you for honoring the men and women that serve our military it means more than you know. i look forward to seeing everybody at fleet week. i will kick it over to lewis?

[applause]. thank you admiral and all the speakers we cannot ends without me pointing out the fwie who started fleet week the chairman of the board of san francisco fleet week association retired general mike meyer, right there. his vision brought us together in 2010. revitalized fleet week the assistance disaster responseful i also want to mention on monday just as this next monday at the golden gate park we are the return of the high school band we will have high marching bands appearing and they will compete for prize money. if you make it there. support the kidsure watch them they are energetic and it gives you hope the next generation will be fabulous. thank you to the band and

>> goodness, let me tell you i have been swearing in's for individuals before this is the largest crowd. she does not have free passes to the movies by the way. ir wonder why all the people are here. first of all, vehicle i'm san

francisco mayor london breed it is really great to join you all to swear monty in to this new role as the director of sf phil and the san francisco film commission. i know we have a number of film commissioners in the house. can you stand. carolyn tile and matt striker... they are her bosses and i'm her boss i guess you got boss she is the real boss and is the one had does the work and i will tell you a bit about mont competence when she has been able to do we are glad to have her in this new role. started off in 2015 and sf film and working on a lot of the nuts and bolts of how we make film

happen in the city. most of the stuff that most of us don't want to do. we want to be in the film like mow in the matrix. [laughter]. we want to watch the film. get on the red or green or blue carpel. there is a lot of work guess in making films work especially in a place like san francisco where everybody has an opinion about where someone should film and had street and what have you. all of those little things require a soft touch. someone when will go in and have that conversation. someone will go in and coordinate and deal with the permits and deal with the cables from muni bus and all of these tien emthings and some of the best accomplishments i think that manny brought to san francisco have had a lot to do with her work on the policy during covid the policy she put

together that allowed films to continue to film. small and large in san francisco during covid. we are not just talking about the films on the dig big and little screens. we are talking about the job it creates. talking about the support for restaurants and hotels and economy. having film until san francisco big or small is so important to the success of our economy. we are grateful for your work on the protocols. and we are also grateful that you know this department under monty's leadership has taken a hold of opportunity for all the program i establish where high school students and young people age of 24 can get a paid internship. fact we were able to get the young people. i visited the sets and i was in

the matrix, i was on set. we had young people in this program. this is the first time any of the productions have work the with intern in this capacity. not going to get nile coffee and stacking up the food. it was like set building and lighting and real production work, working with local 16. working with these various filming companies and creating an opportunity for young people to work on the matrix. to work on mass bridges and the great things. it was like seeing the kids on set and know thanksgiving is a part of their career. it is really something i'm most proved of what you did and the department has done in san francisco and how tell make a difference in their lives and the next generation and really diverse foiling the behind the scenes work. the set crews and lighting courthouse all the stuff we need

to make sure that women and people of color are a part of the equation when doing film in san front as well. we know there is a lot of great work you will continue to do. and luckily you have all the wonderful people here to celebrate with you and support you. people from the industry. from city hall. friends family. because you know this pandemic has challenged our city. and the important part of our economic recovery has everything to do with making sure as beautiful as we know this city is, we want to make sure it is easier to spotlight our city on film. to make sure that it is featured to make sure that we create more than just my san francisco favorite movies the rock and matrix. it is how do we bring other

films and make it easy for the independent film make and opportunity to show case san francisco with the new things we opened up the tunnel top park. that beautiful francisco park you had a cable car coming down. this is like you can't you can't find a better vow in the world. this is an iconic place and beautiful place. first place that people should want to film. we have to make it easier. and i know that there is someone that will lead this department and work william commissioners that am work with the city agencies. that will work with all the neighbors and the folks saying, no to focus what we will do. which is our new notes. how do we get. how do we get to yes. how do we make it happen the person i'm about to square in now will be the one to help us get to, yes, for film nothing san francisco. [applause]. come on up monty.

um -- my heart is full now. i wanted to wroit down words because the people who be me know i get emotional and i can go after track or forget hay want to say. i wanted to make sure i captured everything i wanted to share with you all. and i want to say this is better than getting an oscar. and it is funny because i don't like a lot of attention on me but i will not pass up a celebration. thank you for being here. and i mean truly this is each and everyone of you i look around and you have all been part of this journey with our office. with me. to the film committee and san francisco. so, i have just gratitude for each of and you can't wait to give each you a hug after this

if i have not already done so. but i wanted to say importantly, mayor, thank you for this appointment. you really see the incredible value of the industry. and not just the importance of our stories being told. but you know it is the economic impact that productions have on san francisco. you know from want specialing the small businesses to the local jobs and the local important union jobs that are a result when big are productions come to town. you are the biggest champions. and you have demonstrated that [applause]. mayor lee was a big film lover as well. and so it is incredible to see you come in this role and see how much that you echoed all of his leadership and more.

>> i want to thank my family for being here. and they are here. this means a lot to them and also, yes, i want this to be a participation. if this is had i share speaks to you shout hayou node to do. stand up. i'm the daughter of immigrant parents. my father is from iran and my mother from mexico in 1964, they met in golden gate park. my mom was living with the nuns, not to be a nun but living with them i forgot why. my dad was a student taking computer classes with intent of going back to iran. my mom saw him at a picnic with the musn'ts and said, see that man there,il marry him. and 50 years later you know

right. 55 or 56. i forget. 58 we are here. and the sack foiss that they had for their children i'm the youngest of 4. and what they did to support all of us to be college bound, to have our careers. the sacrifice my generation is the first that went to college. and this is the story i'm telling you is more about me it is about our stories are important and node to be told. right. and all of our stories. and how my story started in the city that's yet city health care important top me. because without the city i would not be here. [applause] i want to acknowledge the commissioners -- so, you have to stand up but here, and -- stand up. you want to sit because you are

filming? no. the commissioners, i have this incredible group of 11 advisors, mentors, collaborateors. i see it as a true gift to work with all of you. because you are what will help guide our work. and ensure we are accountable to the city and to this industry and make sure we thrive. you know we already had a run way together. and i am excited for what is to come with our work together. thank you. [applause] i do have more to say. i will try to speed it up. the mayor has an agenda. i want to thank our team and mall and mighty team usa. we had a lot of transnigz this office in the beginning of last year and we have a new team who

have really stepped up with all this difficult work and we are really node to build our capacity and i look forward to dog that. to ensure we are serving the production community better than we are. because we need to. and so they stepped up under a tight because we should be a larger team and a small, motivey team and doing it. thank you for everything. >> our oewd and our city departments this we worked close w. i see you all there. and where is my other, kate and your leadership in getting this position filled and being the other big champion of san francisco. i thank you for your partnership when i started 7 years ago we had strong reps with the city

but strengthened them and getting the city to see the value of productions and how for we have come and you get it when we ask you we will shut down financial district for 4 weekends to shoot the matrix. that really happened you made it all happen. and oewd is like -- so proud to sit under this department. it makes sense why our film would be a part of such a huge economic engine and sitting with you. the production community. i node you to stand you are here. and the production community and that includes the film makers. so. >> some of you are all standing this is the organization you are tireless work and our labor partners, right.

i asked local 16 and teamsters. and you are from the organization that support and cultivate film making to those that dream up stories of san francisco. to the location managers for showing the best of san francisco. right? to directors so you enties them to shoot here. sometimes i feel the location managers don't get the recognition they need and those other ones from the departments we work the closest with. we help make your filming help here. and i have so much more respect for you all. in my time here and seen just all the intense work you do behind the scenes. [applause] i have a vision for this city where we embrace and invest in our story tellers and

our san fran story tellers and ensure productions staying longer. and i know we need to work on a state wide level to get productions to come to california, right. and we node to get them out of the l.a. zone so they shoot more here. there is a lot of work we have to do and i really need all and we are all responsible for that. it can't loyal on our department and the city. we all have to be advocating for san francisco. and the bay area. we know that san francisco leads the bay area. and we need that leadership. >> and it is important this we commit to the film makers here to stay. you foal like have you a community here. and that it is community to supported by myself and the city. and that we can commit to resources and think about what the resources are like together and see what does missing.

i will embark on listening sessions which i have already done with film make and ares production companies. well is more to come this we have to do so we understand and assess the needs. and really make that happen to support the industry here. last 2 points i want to quickly touch on is the notion of we are such a large modia production hub here. we are home to lucas film. dolby, pixar and you tube. we need to hire sf. i want to see we create path ways which we have done incredible work with the mayor's opportunity for all program and production will say here longer the organizations based here to get them to continue to hire people in san francisco. i would like to see people of color and young people to provide a path way in this

industry. a not in the door. and that is when we will embark on and push those companies and others and other organizations modia organizations to do that. we can hire people in san francisco. [applause]. and something that is important is getting out of the house and getting back and reconnected with san francisco. right. we need to go to theatres we are comfortable on our couches with netflix and hulu we have to see and support our theatre venn use go to rox and he balboa and castro. so i'm inviting you all to challenge yourself. choose a film. there are a ton out there and support your local theatre. and that is including the local festivals they were

conversations happening last week and we have to do that otherwise if we don't support the festivals we'll lose a piece of our community here. right. we are home to incredible film festivals. frame line and san francisco international film festival. urban film fest the list goes on and i forget i will miss folks we have to do that. we have to go to theatres and support that those space. so i invite you and closing to i ini have to you fall in love with san francisco again if you are in the already in love. i'm in love daily. that is true. whatever is story is being told that i think it is important that we tell the story this we want a san francisco that is the positive story. right? this we know it is beyond the beauty we have and we are in the most sin mattick city in the world it is world class.

around the fabric and people here the support and soul of the city. right. that is the story we are resilient and strong. we have to tell. i will request you what story you are telling about san francisco? right? we need to uplift that and do that together. so that we can continue to grow strong and support the industry more. >> our united states constitution requires every ten years that america counts every human being in the united states, which is incredibly important for many reasons. it's important for preliminary representation because if -- political representation because if we under count california, we get less representatives in congress. it's important for san francisco because if we don't have all of the people in our city, if we don't have all of

the folks in california, california and san francisco stand to lose billions of dollars in funding. >> it's really important to the city of san francisco that the federal government gets the count right, so we've created count sf to motivate all -- sf count to motivate all citizens to participate in the census. >> for the immigrant community, a lot of people aren't sure

whether they should take part, whether this is something for u.s. citizens or whether it's something for anybody who's in the united states, and it is something for everybody. census counts the entire population. >> we've given out $2 million to over 30 community-based organizations to help people do the census in the communities where they live and work. we've also partnered with the public libraries here in the city and also the public schools to make sure there are informational materials to make sure the folks do the census at those sites, as well, and we've initiated a campaign to motivate the citizens and make sure they participate in census 2020. because of the language issues that many chinese community and families experience, there is a lot of mistrust in the federal

government and whether their private information will be kept private and confidential. >> so it's really important that communities like bayview-hunters point participate because in the past, they've been under counted, so what that means is that funding that should have gone to these communities, it wasn't enough. >> we're going to help educate people in the tenderloin, the multicultural residents of the tenderloin. you know, any one of our given blocks, there's 35 different languages spoken, so we are the original u.n. of san francisco. so it's -- our job is to educate people and be able to familiarize themselves on doing this census. >> you go on-line and do the census. it's available in 13 languages, and you don't need anything.

it's based on household. you put in your address and answer nine simple questions. how many people are in your household, do you rent, and your information. your name, your age, your race, your gender. >> everybody is $2,000 in funding for our child care, housing, food stamps, and medical care. >> all of the residents in the city and county of san francisco need to be counted in census 2020. if you're not counted, then your community is underrepresented and will be underserved.

>> i lived in the mission neighborhood for seven years and before that the excel see your district. 20 years a resident of the city and county of san francisco. i am the executive director of a

local art space nonprofit that showcases work that relate to the latino community and i have been in this building for seven years and some of my neighbors have been here 30 year. we were notified from the landlord he was going to sell the building. when we realized it was happening it was no longer a thought for the landlord and i sort of had a moment of panic. i heard about the small sites program through my work with the mission economic agency and at met with folks from the mayor's housing program because they wanted to utilize the program. we are dealing with families with different needs and capacities. conversations were had early in the morning because that is the

only time that all the tenants were in the building and finally when we realized that meda did have the resources to buy the building we went on a letter writing campaign to the landlord and said to him we understand you want to sell your building, we understand what you are asking for and you are entitled to it, it's your land, but please work with us. what i love about ber nell height it represents the diversity that made me fall in love with san francisco. we have a lot of mom and pop shops and you can get all your resources within walking distance. my favorite area of my home is my little small patio where i

can start my morning and have my coffee is a sweet spot for me and i

>> ♪♪ ♪♪ we are definitely pioneers in

airport concession world a world of nationally if not entirely or internationally >> everybody is cop us right now. >> the people that were in charge of the retail this is where that began. >> i didn't think we would have a location at the airport. >> we've set the bar higher with the customer commerce. >> telling me about the operator and how you go about finding them and they get from being in the city to being in the airport. >> so first, we actually find a table and once we know what we want a sit-down we go to the neighborhoods in san francisco and other people seminary of the retail let us know about the

rain water and are excited to have the local operators in the airport. >> we have to go going through the conceive selective process and they award a lease to the restaurant. >> they are planning on extending. >> we that you could out the china and the length evens and the travel serve and fourth your minds and it's all good. >> how long for a vendor to move through the process. >> i would say it could take 80 up to a year from the time we go out to bid until they actually open a restaurant. >> i don't know what we signed up for but the airport is happy to have us here. and, you know, even taking out the track simple things there's

a learning curve >> with once we're here they are helpful. >> it's an award-winning program. >> we're prude of your awards we have won 11 awards the latest for the best overall food address beverage program and . >> like the oscars (laughter). >> the professional world. >> tell me about the future food. >> all the sb national leases are xooirz and we're hoping to bring newer concepts out in san francisco and what your passengers want. >> well, i look forward to the future (laughter) air are we look fofofofofofofof

sustainable future . >> san francisco streets and puffs make up 25 percent of cities e city's land area more than all the parks combined they're far two wide and have large flight area the pavement to parks is to test the variants by ininexpensive changing did new open spaces the city made up of streets in you think about the potential of having this space for a purpose it is demands for the best for

bikes and families to gather. >> through a collaborative effort with the department we the public works and the municipal transportation agency pavement to parks is bringing initiative ideas to our streets. >> so the face of the street is the core of our program we have in the public right-of-way meaning streets that can have areas perpetrated for something else. >> i'm here with john francis pavement to parks manager and this parklet on van ness street first of all, what is a parklet and part of pavement to parks program basically an expense of the walk in a public realm for people to hang anti nor a urban acceptable space for people to use. >> parklets sponsors have to

apply to be considered for the program but they come to us you know saying we want to do this and create a new space on our street it is a community driven program. >> the program goes beyond just parklets vacant lots and other spaces are converted we're here at playland on 43 this is place is cool with loots things to do and plenty of space to play so we came up with that idea to revitalizations this underutilized yard by going to the community and what they said want to see here we saw that everybody wants to see everything to we want this to be a space for everyone. >> yeah. >> we partnered with the

pavement to parks program and so we had the contract for building 236 blot community garden it start with a lot of jacuzzi hammers and bulldozer and now the point we're planting trees and flowers we have basketball courts there is so much to do here. >> there's a very full program that they simply joy that and meet the community and friends and about be about the lighter side of city people are more engaged not just the customers. >> with the help of community pavement to parks is reimagining the potential of our student streets if you want more information visit them as the pavement to parks or contact pavement to parks at sfgovtv.org

>> candlestick park known also as the stick was an outdoor stadium for sports and entertainment. built between 1958 to 1960, it was located in the bayview hunters point where it was home to the san francisco giants and 49ers. the last event held was a concert in late 2014. it was demolished in 2015.

mlb team the san francisco giants played at candlestick from 1960-1999. fans came to see players such a willie mays and barry bonds, over 38 seasons in the open ballpark. an upper deck expansion was added in the 1970s. there are two world series played at the stick in 1962 and in 198 9. during the 1989 world series against the oakland as they were shook by an earthquake. candlestick's enclosure had minor damages from the quake but its design saved thousands of lives. nfl team the san francisco 49ers played at candlestick from feign 71-2013. it was home to five-time super bowl champion teams and hall of fame players by joe montana, jerry rice and steve jones.

in 1982, the game-winning touchdown pass from joe montana to dwight clark was known as "the catch." leading the niners to their first super bowl. the 49ers hosted eight n.f.c. championship games including the 2001 season that ended with a loss to the new york giants. in 201, the last event held at candlestick park was a concert by paul mccartney who played with the beatles in 1966, the stadium's first concert. demolition of the stick began in late 2014 and it was completed in september 2015. the giants had moved to pacific rail park in 2000 while the 49ers moved to santa clara in 2014. with structural claims and numerous name changes, many have passed through and will remember candlestick park as home to the legendary athletes and entertainment. these memorable moments will live on in a place called the
