san francisco and thank you for sending out today's invitation. okay. >> your three minutes begin now. >> i want to i'm going to turn it over to the mayor the san francisco mayor london breed mayor breed. >> (clapping) wow. it has been a very busy couple of weeks for the san francisco police department. and i can't be more than happy and proud to be here today. to honor members of department who have been demonstrated extraordinary work it i can and also met the challenges of picture job in a way that is gone above and beyond the call of duty before i move on one some of any comments i wanted to thank and acknowledge the former police chief who is in the back (clapping.) chief and i had a conversation

awhile back to talk about what we could do to support police officers in san francisco and in fact, some of you know i've been visiting a number of police stations and hardcore knowing sessions hearing about information that was hard to hear more so because what i think about the challenges of what the department is fashioned when i can't help but think about what i can do or some of the elected and leaders could do to make sure we are doing everything we can to support them. and in fact, it has been a hard couple of years for law enforcement in general we know that the departments over the country is pushing fashioned a number of restrooms in san francisco i so proud of the work we have done and continue to do to not only reform our department but also make sure that the police work in the city

is supported building that's why we're here today to show that level of support and just a couple of weeks ago we saw and think continue to see those horrible stories of san francisco and san francisco 0 not been a safe city and others write the narrative to be in san francisco but the stories that you will hear today donate what is right about san francisco and those stories need to be told in the stage capacity as others need to be told the be go they've done despite the odds and the obstacles and the challenges that continue to persist oftentimes the roadblocks make it difficult to do their job they persist in serving the be public comment and i'm grateful and i'm proud of the work you have done but especially to hear the heartbreaking stories of some sinus and why it is important we

bring back the business of officers of the month to make sure that people are being recognized to their hard work and dedication. before i move on i just alsoless want to recognize and uncle the people here from the business community. >> thank you for the opportunity to r50e7 role recognize and chris and for others for the police officers association the xherldz many of have seen people who are born and raised in the cities are protecting the city and what it is doing in terms of the favorite around the department for recruitment and get people engaged and interested if most honorable profession it is really great to see do commercials on testifying testifying people a what talk about a which is wrong with san francisco. >> do police department is donating their actions everyone

so i'm happy to be here with chief and with the commander staff and others to celebrate those folks because stories oftentimes don't hear about and someone suffering with behavorial health and the conversation that happened to try to make sure that someone is. okay. the hotels paid for by police officers with they're hard-earned money not off hand and the things the cast conversions stuff it everyone is talking about keeping complaining about well (laughter) but you support our officers to thank you, supervisor. >> the most challenging stopping someone from committing a crime or preventing the crime from happening to lead to other crimes in the first place the thing about san francisco what i know our officers requirement in

the terms we want to make sure we give second changes and furnish forward criminal justice but need to listen to our police force we need to understand the challenges they face and have open diagonal not just tell them but listening to how they are doing their jobs and what we can do better as poishgz to make sure the policies whether that is a police commissions or the board of supervisors or directors from the mayors offices we give them the toll and coming up with what we're asking them to do realistic i don't think most people every walked as police officer i think that is time we look out making some serious challenges around our reforms and the need to bring together all of us to talk about exactly how we are going to do that and work together and

(clapping.) i know how hardware it is to be the family member of police officer and we couldn't quite frankly and just the fact you all are here in support of officers honored really means a lot to us in their opinion we're all family i don't know, you don't get to hear what the official you are here for gets involved in oftentimes we don't talk about it i rear will i talk about it to my family and it was a events like that may family find out what was was doing and thank you for being here. we have to make sure that people are here. so - i just want to say also just to piggyback on the number of people that come together really, really has been

a rough few years and our commission supervisors and led by the mayor and bring everything together and the community was the biggest reason we came together and thanks to my friends who was relength less to make sure those people came together and the mayor in honoring you at the event we don't dress up thick this often that is the magnitude of what that is, i know a lot of things with happening in the world in the police world and one of the things we're committed to doing the mayor the commission the department is making sure that officers get the recognition at work so continue to do good work and represent the city and want did in a way you've been doing that and on behalf of this organization we are extremely proud of you and you are one of

criminals in their tracks officers nick has not only pretended them from committing further crimes but also bringing just who were effected and take a moment to recognize the bravery any who that likely put himself in harm's way to arrest those suspects is a testament and on february 22, 2023, officers respond as back up to a carjacking with a gun from departure where the vehicle was tracked by gps. and officers park located did vehicle and chased he save pursued the vehicle long enough for the chp

to be the primary agency. the suspect traveled wreck also on traffic in the the freeway and air support tracked it when you lost in the area of brooke dale in oakland, california and officers again responding to the area located the carjacked vehicle and comprehensive plan survey support was able to find the suspect in a nearby driveway and again, officers park responded. >> and took the outstanding carjacking suspect in custody and officers parking exemplified what it means to be a san francisco official and designed to one biggest organizations in the city and important to remember the police officers face dangers situations an daily

(clapping.) thank you, assistant chief good afternoon, everybody. >> we know and appreciate everyone being here. >> it is great to have an opportunity to recognize some of the officers one of the 45erd jobs to thank the officers for this type of thing but do i have officers carl and carmen work probably one of the busier shifts and spring watch and night watch on the southern stations are the busiest and do on ongoing job and i'm going to talk about one of the instances here oftentimes we or doing crime fighting but that is outside of catching the bad guy those guys did an ongoing job.

and officers roach responded to 7 61 regarding a purpose jumping off a building and safety and that on arrive observed an 18-year-old suspect and recognized this suspect was struggling with a female that appears to be taking him off a 4 story on top of the building. so recognizing the dangers he ran to the top and requested back up officers diaz was one of the officers that responded and as and reached the fourth floor where the suspect was struggling with the mother and sister trying to pull him in and quickly realized the oasis a spanish speaker and officers arrived on zone and able to

translate and get - it was that respect the subject was more agitate and more erratic and at this time officers said there was a good chance that suspect would leap occupy the building without considering his risk officers roach quickly maneuvered grabbed the suspect. >> pulled him to safety and able to take him in custody at the suspect continues to scrolled up and yelled and want to go book to my grandmother that recently passed away and after detaining him survival they spoke with the mother and sister the suspect was 18 years old and suffered from autism and needed help the mother and

sister were extremely grateful to the officers for the action and explained the suicide. and officers responsive roach and diaz demonstrated, you know, the attributes and things we look four law officers on a regular basis i'd like to honor them on behalf of mayor breed and chief scott for the officers of most

crime is the source of the city and the officers know at least at times this crime is a little bit more dangerous as is suspect individuals achieves and not responding and the officers cal visa removed to the area and they encounter and witness and quickly get a description and know because they know the crime trend and the criminal pattern they immediately find this vehicle and start planning on a vehicle stop crime. >> because of the nature of the crime and the hour of the night the vehicle stops are dangerous yet they conducted take into consideration vehicular stops and the officers approach do vehicular and made contact the suspect didn't have a driver's license and determined the guy

has a catalytic convert didn't along to him and quickly make the next investigation. and handcuffed on and they searched the car and find that many catalytic convert and also cutting tools and jacks for jacked cars and drugs in the car and their investigation with the witness on the scene they do a show up this is the guy hope that hoped the did the crime and stealing the catalytic converts we're lucky to have some officers as those folks and because of their december to doubt and their timeliness a he so commit to the residents of san francisco they do a very good job night in and out and dedicated smart and brave are

interesting, just like san francisco has been counted out, people continue to try and count out the warriors. they said we wouldn't make it to the play-offs, guess what, saturday we'll show them what we are made of! [applause] last year, last year when they counted out the warriors, guess what they did? they brought home a championship! [applause] so, they can keep counting us out, but we are bay area strong and when we come together we make magic happen. we are sending energy to sacramento today to make it clear that we stand hundred percent behind our warriors. we have the basketball team from san francisco state, the women team from san francisco state the mens team from usf, all our various athletes here.

[applause] we are super excited and fortunate to enter the play offs for the 9th time in the last 11 years. [applause] you know we have been to it nba finals 6 times in the last 8 years and brought home 4 championships. we are hoping to add to that tally in the next couple months. it startz saturday night 5:30 in sacramento. we had our struggles a little on the road but rest assured we won at least one road game and 27 consecutive. this is a record. this is the first time all 4 teams in california have been in the nba play offs so the first time we played the kings. it will be a lot of fun not only for the bay area but the entire region. now, during a 82 game season, teams tend to have ups and downs. now different for the warriors. we

>> and that is it for the 2022 golden state warrior parade. huge thanks to everybody involved and the city of san francisco. the cleanup crew getting the city back to tip top shape. for more information about the great city departments, [music] digital literacy is something severely lacking in our world today and it takes a lot to understand that. food water and shelter have basic necessities so long we forget about wifi and connection to the interenet and when you go into communities and realize peep ople are not able to load homework and talk to teachers

and out of touch with the world. by providing the network and system we are able to allow them to keep up in the modern age. >> folks still were not served by internet throughout the city and tended to be low income people, people in affordable housing. people of color and limited english and seniors, all those are high concentrations in affordable housing, so we thought given that we had a fiber network that stretched throughout the city reaching deep into neighborhoods that would be a perfect opportunity to address it in san francisco. >> the infrastructure the city and star help us run are dejtle programs. it played a critical role from the time we opened during covid till now so we were able to collaborate with online services that offer tutoring and school support. it also helped us be able to log the kids on for

online school during covid, in addition to like, now that everybody has switched most of their curriculum online we can log kids on to the online homework, check grades in addition to helping parent learn how to use the school system portm >> the office of digital equity our goal fiber to housing is insure we have all three legs of the 3 legged stool. the first leg is high quality internet connection. we liken the high quality internet connection to the highway. the second leg is high quality devices. this is the car. you want to make sure the specks on the car is up to speed and lastly, it is important to get kind of that driver's education to learn how to navigate the road, to know the signs to watch out for in terms

of making sure you are school while you are surfing the internet it is private so that is the digital literacy piece. >> my daily life i need the internet just to do pretty much everything. the internet has taken so much control over people's daily lives including myself that i just need it to get certain jobs done, i need it for my life. i need it. >> the program really seeks to where ever possible provide a service that's equivalent or higher speed and quality as the best commercial service . >> we serve all of san francisco, but we definitely have to be equitable in our distribution of services. that means everybody gets what they need to be successful. >> actually one of the most gratifying part of my work here at department of technology, it is really bringing city resources to address problems faced with our communities with the highest need.

>> i think it is important because i grew up in a low income community without internet access and it is hard. i think it is important for everyone to have internet access no matter their income and maybe one day their kid will have internet access for us and help the school and with their skills.

>> you know i've always wanted to do this job that drives my parents crazy we want to help people i wasn't i did not think twice about that. >> i currently work as cadet inform the san francisco sheriff's department i've been surprised 0 work within criminal justice system field i had an opportunity to grow within that career path. >> as i got into the department and through the years of problems and everything else that means a lot i can represent women and in order to make that change how people view us as a very important part of the vice

president you have topanga you have to the first foot chase through the fight are you cable of getting that person whether large or small into captivity that is the test at times. >> as an agent worked undercover and prevent external and internal loss to the company it was basically like detective work but through the company from that experience and the people that i worked around law enforcement that gave me an action when i came to be a cadet i saw i was exploded to more people and the security he was able to build on that. >> unfortunately, we have a lot of women retire to recruiting right now is critical for us we gotten too low faster the percentage of women in the

department and us connecting with the community trying to get people to realize this job is definitely for them our community relations group is out attempt all the time. >> in other words, to grow in the fields he capitalized any education and got my bachelors degree so i can current work at city hall i provide security for the front of the building and people are entering entering but within any security or control within the building and checking personal bags is having a awareness of the surrounded. >> there is so month people the brunet of breaking into this career that was every for easier for me had an on the with an before he cleared the path for laugh us.

>> shared spaces have transformed san francisco's adjacent sidewalks, local business communities are more resilient and their neighborhood centers are more vibrant and mildly. sidewalks and parking lanes can be used for outdoor seating, dining, merchandising, and other community activities.

we're counting on operators of shared spaces to ensure their sites are safe and accessible for all. people with disabilities enjoy all types of spaces. please provide at least 8 feet of open uninterrupted sidewalk so everyone can get through. sidewalk diverter let those who have low vision navigate through dining and other activity areas on the sidewalk. these devices are rectangular planters or boxes that are placed on the sidewalk at the ends of each shared space and need to be at least 12 inches wide and 24 inches long and 30 inches tall. they can be on wheels to make it easy to bring in and out at the start and the end of each day. but during business hours, they should be stationary and secure. please provide at least one wheelchair accessible dining table in your shared space so the disability people can
