homelessness city gardens will give families the tools they need for the future and with that, i want to thank london breed for her leadership and toss the mic to her (clapping.) thank you, serene and it really is great to be here you know this project happen very fast and specifically with the city and county of san francisco it would have taken a really long time to add 200 units to our protocol let alone a little with 2, three and 4 bedrooms. i mean this when adams brought this to may attention last year, we are applying for dollars and san francisco has been a big benchmark of homekey dollars
12:04 pm
allowed to move people into the buildings faster a lot of challenges in our city around family housing so i must say to a bode and the team and all the people who are working here and the fact you choose to be here and work in this cadet is very much appreciative we are grateful to each other and you're choosing to be here at bode and helping people whether they're challenging or not thank you, so much we appreciate that and let me say a couple of things i'll let you guys deal with that you'll get into the deal yeah

12:06 pm
this city working hard to support people we understand it is not a one-size-fits all a family housing shelters and supportive housing there are housing attached to resources and housing attached to independence all those examples everything we need to san francisco and i can name so many families we're doing it right but in and out without help without the people that work for you who are showing up to this base everyday we are doing it for people like la seize will talk about and make sure that our families especially who are raising children in the city have a safe affordable place to call home this is what this is about and this project is truly about we - the fact we got in
12:07 pm

republican and all people to make sure you're shelter beds and challenges that exist exist we are using the dollars to match with the opportunity and with the oasis last week all those great opportunity i couldn't be admonish powder of work in the city and so that many pieces of preschools by the reason we say this is to give you you a perspective this is an important place here by more importantly san francisco is doing a lot on the large-scale most people don't know that san francisco is one of the only cities in the bay area that actually saw a reduction in homeless a 3.5 percent reduction in overall homelessness and 15 percent in unshredded homelessness. it because of all
12:09 pm
this work to assure that places like we are today we're able to connect people the opportunity. so it is great to be here and great to to be here with the supervisor matt that work hard to make sure that we have this space but also provide the funding necessary to keep the operation going to keep the doors open, to keep this place in good condition there is so much goods into it i didn't ultimately the smiles on the kids faces that get to life and thrive here that makes that worthy we're grateful to be here with each other and thank you so much for your hard work (clapping.) with that, please welcome our supervisor matt dorsey. >> (clapping) thank you, mayor breed and welcome to district 6 everybody i got at thes starting with the
12:10 pm
mayor london breed's really want to express my appreciation for your leadership to doing everything we can to provide people exist to homelessness for projects like this and a strategy that is really making progress i think the mayor makes it an important point so many people kind of look at the issue of homelessness as an issue that is being solved what is really unseen in that? thousands of lives that are being changed. because of the work that hsh is doing that's my second thing thank you to everybody at the doecht and homelessness they're on the front line i feel they're doing god's work because they're all lives are changing is
12:11 pm
getting people exits to homelessness and turning their lives around we'll be hearing about that is it great to have this - it is great to know. that we are fulfilling what san francisco is about. this project is part of a the civic creed of the city and county of san francisco the city of st. francis of assisi and the partnerships and mayor thanks many of people behind us but being a trusted procedure and partner means the world to me as a district supervisor knowing i can count own our partners we have challenges south of market and 6. i want to say more importantly thank you to it my new residents, you know. i had the opportunity and brought some cards i say this whenever i meet
12:12 pm
a district 6 resident i hand them my card this is my number i know when i signed up and if i hear from you that's good and if you don't call me i know you're good. he's volunteered to be the point person but i actually you can call us or e-mail so if you, you don't see me well make sure you get me or bryan and express my gratitude to. >> thank it is an honor to be here i'll ash a supporter this the department and thank you, hsh residents will hear, you know. some project is coming and there's a lot of people a people public school hostile to that

nonprofit is hurting we're sfooufr what a great difference and, you know, i want to shout out for my staff here i mean, you people (clapping.) who work hard everyday to get things done and we're human beings we make mistakes more importantly we had a conversation about the influence in the neighborhood we're going to need to be aware of it and talking about the problem solving and a member of the supervisor dorsey's district you are a citizen here completely many in partnership with us that's true for each and lots of things to celebrate we're actually putting people in a place they can have an agency and meaning in their lives again and doing the things that give them joy and happiness and in a moment more importantly is to provide the children that are
12:15 pm
going to be in the building a family project in the middle of santa fe i mean san francisco (laughter) we're in 8 county and i forgot where i am this is san francisco think of san francisco urban to address family homelessness an incredible building like this was made for middle class people a building. to have that and have the your team put together the purchase of this. and then to collaborate o collaborate with the services to do do property management at least on this on time by the way. (clapping.) i mean this was a pretty ambitious timeline. collaborate so, you know. sometimes this is okay for the general public but
12:16 pm
takes government, nonprofits and citizens in the community working together to make this happens that makes this happen i can't tell you how overjoyed i am i san francisco i got it right this time and only begins here we're open to doing more and interested in addressing the bigger thing. which is the incredible social problem in california around unhoused people not being thought of for as long as it is predated you folks and san francisco it is california, and where in the hell this the (inaudible) we need to keep on plugging away we'll get there one project at a time and program at a time. i
12:17 pm

12:18 pm
home and new life. my old life i left this part behind you is that my childhood was unstable toxic and abused that would be an understatement and i was in years in foster care and - but then i ran away as a teenager (baby crying. >> i never went back home in my 20s i worked as a professional model and i was seen and no further heard and existed and not respected but i flirted with disaster i ran with a bad crowd
12:19 pm
that crowd is justified and abused me when i was a kid. and this crowd showed the kinks he eventually would on the street without a home and i was traumatized. my life spiral down and down i hit rock bottom but given a choice a new chance at life i took life my life. and i never looked back. i joined a program and goat sober and today, i'm celebrating 5 weeks sober (clapping) thank you. >> slowly but surely rebuilding my life and city gardens help a lot too it is important it is not easy and i learned it is never too late to
12:20 pm
change. >> i take him he's a mouth full and change but when i was making progress i had adversity here's an example i began taking classes at a school and get a housing voucher but one problem i was about to lose my housing voucher it was about to expire i was stressed all my hard work would be done gone and homelessness one again, i would not give up and at the last minute i got the call they told i had a home and finally this amazing home i had of my own a whiff place called city gardens. and this is the second best
12:21 pm
thing that ever happened to medical the best thick my baby? in our thoughts and prayers my the boy is the truly the best thing ever happened to me and my goal promise to him have a place for him (baby that's a good question.) >> as for me, i'm a person of checking off lists and the folks at city gardens they offered so in services like pavrnt services and we even get to play bingo on saturdays. so i feel i need to thank a few people jill any of the paerp and rob and the family rising the homeless creative program and john austin. cynthia

12:23 pm
bring me joy i look at my personal growth. i think of my his over the years i collected a bunch of plants and taken snippets and they have their story before i was never stable enough but as long as i've been sober my thoughts have grown and we're healthy and my plants are used it is satisfy safe to say in a flapts like this and guess want i can't wait to see how big - you see city gardens where i found hope, hope for me and my little son this use to be my escape but now my home i could
12:24 pm
not leave my heart in san francisco like the song i found my heart, i love living here in san francisco and city gardens and city by the bay never too late. >> thank you for giving me this chance mayor and appreciate you coming today and listening to my story thank you, (clapping.) it was amazing. >> i don't know how to follow with that, i. yeah, it is beautiful. thank you very much. >> so i guess want to thank everyone for being here at the abode for you're amazing services and sharing your story and thank you supervisor dorsey. >> thank you and i think we're

12:28 pm
thank you for joining us, we are honored by your presence. (clapping.) now you'll be hearing in the council generally and the amazing community members this is also great to come home everyone i get a chance to come to fillmore or japantown this is a homecoming for me so many of the people joining us are people who have been colors in this community for decades the ones whenever and a broaden challenge the first one to raise the hand and to assure that the quacks of 24 neighborhood when the city comes in and those impacts are positive for the people who live here and the welcome addition no japantown this is a a deep he rich history in challenges and
12:29 pm
struggle and sneak before the redevelopment agency took hold to have neighborhood geary bridge is not the same it is a road but a highway divided our community in ways we couldn't have imaged it was really what started up afterthought advocacy to make sure the community is a part of this when we are proposing the give and take bus rapid transit are dedicated to the munching to make sure that muni is moving efficient and low as a fast as he came in the streets of san francisco we need the see with the community in mind and navenlt we worked with with the japantown community to make adjustments were not talked about. and initially the plan called for tearing down in
12:30 pm
bridge behind us so many people felt this bridge was about bridging gaps and bridging community to the though not only proposed department since the last fire commission meeting, including budget, academies, special events, on to this wonderful bridge this seniors and kids use and elementary school but folks cross this bridge next year safety to get on give and take we didn't want to see that amazing bridge torn down and within the middle of block within laguna and western a crossway honest we crossed the street in the middle of the road putting our lives in our hands to get to japantown and walk under the plaza and then down to the bowl now it is safe passage and one of the creations of the folks from the community who saw is this was so many kids and folks using this as a cross we
12:31 pm
wanted to make that satisfy that's what we need the and today 317 celebrating why are we celebrating the bridge but the symbolism of what it representatives the connections between folks farther part of western community and the people part of japantown those ties that bind us help to maintain that bond that is unbreakable because of the challenges of the past and so today as we celebrate the beauty of this bridge and the beauty of japantown and the western addition we reminded o communities are here because of people who 0 that live and struggle and the people that remainy silent despite the brooks thank you, everyone for
12:32 pm
being here but thank you, department of public works and carl and her team to make that more beautiful a than i've ever seen and tenderloin one on our community members and steve and greg from the so many people and james from hud this is a community effort and i'm looking forward to not only continuing to walk across this bridge by it see it continued to be used for folks to be connected and with that, at this time, i want to introduce the council general of japantown. >> (clapping) good morning, everyone. thank you very much for inviting me today a block event i think the
12:33 pm
theme today, this morning is the bridge. bridging the community with the japantown and western addition and reaching the bridging san francisco to japan bridging to to the world i came here 5 weeks ago but i have already heard the mayor brooedz so many times every time i'm excited 0 here that mayor breeding it is the enrollment of the bridging between the western addition and a japantown san francisco and japan and to the world. so in two weeks ago time will be a guy garlic event
12:34 pm
gathering 21 applies here. i celebrate and i congratulate mayor breed and the people of san francisco to hold such an event introducing san francisco to the world and, and, and rendering tuned for that having that event possible in san francisco. and we hope that we can have this kind of mature bridge again in japan and in other parts of the world thank you, again, for today and congratulations. thank you. (clapping.) i also want to give a shout out to some of our community members of the squares deputy city attorney i can't and connie for the record and economic development want to shout out to
12:35 pm
another one who works there and japan and i see patrick who is here. thank you very much for joining us really is a close comment community that work closely together and at this time, i want to ask is grace or steve. >> okay. we're to ask fire commissioner steve to come up and say a few words (clapping). >>. thank you very much. mayor breed and council germany want to give a real recognition to mayor breed in terms of our presence and support in the western addition yeah fillmore and japantown for our responsibility as mayor of the san francisco. i need to
12:36 pm
recognize the repetitive of our community which are many folks behind me make up the mayor's office and support but the partnerships with dpw and michelle and carla and all the dpw team because without that combines and collaboration 24/7 us the mayor office and more importantly the fillmore community i am full of emotion standing in the stood shadow of japantown and can't stop thinking about all we didn't need in the old days to combine fillmore. we simply wobbled across the street so through the evidence of history and what
12:37 pm
happened and highway and free with that beautiful rendition of the bridge and the colors with the aspirations of apec i feel that our journey is moving forward and time to heal japantown and the fillmore with that history and dedication we maintain that bridge and that relationship that goes beyond to japan as well thank you, mayor breed and department of public works. thank you. (clapping.) thank you so much steve i know that sandy is not here but shout out to all the work she's been doing over the years and at this time, i want to recognize andy to say a few words (clapping.)
12:38 pm
thank you, ma'am mayor. and concrete before i've been a preacher all my life and to the consul generally i'm excited to be here preliminarily to illustrate to talk about how this bridge representatives our connections between two communities and time is trying to separate us and managed to stay today an example of this. the association and steve will do a great documentary between those two communities. many, many years ago, i was invited to be on panel of um, that commemoration of the japanese when we were sent away to the
12:39 pm
camps i didn't know why i was invited but went because of japantown called they and i was so grateful there was a elder woman that talked about the day they were leaving she said of the only people that seem to miss they're leaving where black people in the philadelphia more today they left the only people that showed up to say goodbye were the black christian folks from the fillmore and brought brown patricia of chicken and that's the way we used to travel across country because of, of course, because of jim we didn't know we tried a restaurant would
12:40 pm
serve us and fried chicken would last longer out of rerefrigerator and something that fits in a shoe box you know what i'm talking about that's the kind of relationship those communities have always had and notice that while our association location japantown you fillmore it is really more separated since this bridge than that was ever was in reality because our relationship was a relationship of location by of the heart. and while they can pit this in to separate us they couldn't separate our hearts from one another that's why we're still together and i see a lot of people in filling more
12:41 pm
and japantown serving that and make sure that i let nothing happens we've always been together and determined to stay together no-brainier what happens in gearing boulevard i want to tell you and let you know that we are psa this relationship togetherness on to the next generation and on to the next generation every in san francisco, california learn how you be can be distinct in the community. >> be together contaminate what a beautiful lesson to thank you, everyone for giving us to chance to glover any in our friendship. thank you very much. >> thank you rendering attain send and toy everybody for
12:42 pm
coming here we're going to do a ceremony i can't tell walk across this bridge and, yes. so we're going. >> here's what we do in a community coming together and hanging out one another and uplifting afternoon this is was it will be and also be. thank you very much for being here today. >> oh, wow, look at the colors i love it. and wow. >> i know; right? >> uh-huh. >> when i was a
12:43 pm
all right. hello. look at all the families and folks in the audience, thank you and welcome it is great to have you here. i'm san francisco mayor london breed. and today we are going to be doing a swearing in of commissioners, historic preservation, bayview cac, retirement board. there are wonderful commissions in san francisco. and some of you know i got my start at the san francisco redevelopment agency commission now ocii. and the fact is -- i got my
12:44 pm
start at the commission you remember, during a time when there was real challenges with the western edition and soma community and the need to have community representation. now, during this time, i never thought i would be mayor of san francisco. but i went from you know the commission on the redevelopment agency commission to the fire commission. and -- i was trying to leave the redevelopment agency at the time, i wanted go become to school i was running a nonprofit. i was at the university of san francisco. and i wanted it focus. because that was important it me. the mayor at the time. newsome said. do the fire commission it is less reading. i said, yes. because there was less reading
12:45 pm
but -- when i decided to serve on a commission i wanted to make sure this when i was makeing commitment, that i showed up. that my attendance was good and i was able to read all my materials and participate. because that is had i was there to do and when i was in the situation when school was going to require a lot of reading and write iing knew i could not give it my all like before the fire commission did in the have as much read and more fun. here we are fast forward i'm responsible for the amazing commissions what was important it me was rep 7ation of san francisco. not diversity as far as ethnicity. but geographic. san franciscans part of the fabric of the city are a part of the decisionmaking body for the
12:46 pm
policies this we pass. for the investment this is we make. because when you bring this diverse opinions. and communities with different experience around san francisco, you -- produce a better product. for the people of san francisco. someone who drives, catches mounty, walks and bikes everyone brings something different at this time table there is a way to come together on the different bodies in order to push policies in san francisco that makes san francisco better. i either get the credit or the blame for whatever you do. keep this in mind as you make policy and do good things with those policies. more important low. thank you for your service. because this is service to the city and county of san
12:47 pm
francisco. xu your capacity as commissioners. common sense of the groups you are public servients. and it is so important that you take the roles seriously and you do everything you can to serve the people of san francisco and know that even though you minot get thanked every day for take your personal time to devote. i say thank you for your service and commitment to the city and county of san francisco. i will ask all the commissioners who are worn in today to stand up here. so we can get started. >> the reason where this will be interesting because you all are members of different bodies. so, we are going to do this
12:48 pm
where everyone will get their moment to shine. but we need to balance sides some of you -- need to come down this way on this end. one more. and we got a balance. you look beautiful. great. all smiles. happy and red to serve. remember this day and these smiles. there will be tough meetings where the smiles will be gone for a heart time every now and then. but hopeful low we'll get to a great place afterure able to produce good things for the city. here is how it is going to go. so, when i say, i state your name itch will go down the list so everyone states their name and repeat after me the various things i will say and finally i will pinlt to you when it is the time for to you say the name of
12:49 pm
the organization that you are serving on. it is either member of the cac for the xyz or commissioner for the mta, x, y, z, this stuff. got it? don't worry. we will get through it. okay. are we ready? . let's do this please raise your right hand and repeat after me. i, state your name. >> [inaudible] [cannot hear names] [stating names]. do solomly swear i will passport
12:50 pm
and defend. the constitution of the united states and the constitution of the state of california. against all enemies, foreign and domestic. that i bear true faith and allegiance. to the same. i take this obligation freely without any mental reservation. or purpose of evasion. and i will well and faithfully, discharge the duties upon which i'm about to enter. and during such time, as i serve
12:51 pm
as -- [inaudible] [no audio] [inaudible] for the city ask county of san francisco. congratulation, everybody! [applause] thank you and i isn't
12:52 pm
i little off script do we have i member of the body who may want to say a few words today to talk about how important the roles are anything else you want to say? relevant to today? i do see somebody? >> yes, mayor, broed. thank you for this opportunity. i want to say we appreciate the way you are handling things you make adjustments and we love that. thank you. [applause] >> all right. so at this time we will do a few photos with family and friends if this is okay. all right. you good? okay. let's do it.
