6:37 pm
because of the recognition and the um, the performance that michael has presents metal of arts and the kivend center honors the peabody award and for matthew names many of the grammars in every way. so we're making the pitch for the case we told them not only is he a visual maestro performer but a teacher and learner and left hand to the young people and how they wanted to learn music. he embarrassed technology in a way that no oat maestro had nerd to again accommodate the i should say the opportunities that presented for young people so i've seen him perform in florida
6:38 pm
and all seen him perform here but really a virtual to global in every way i think i have a little connection i want to bring up i would like to michael earlier michael i can't help but think to see your name on the streets in san francisco. (clapping.) they're contribution to music in our country one hundred years ago and michael a hundred years ago. in baltimore medical cannabis dispensary we had the connection. but i wish you could have seen the reception the presidents metal and the response to the kennedy and i wish you can go to the library of congress and see see memorializing of his music there. that's pretty exciting to
6:39 pm
isn't it? so in all honor of michael we come together and feel paul and i saw him in october a good performance and in january and look forward to that and always gives us something to look forward and to save 0 volunteer the moment and thank you, michael. you make us so proud to know one of the great, great maestros of all time. and the makes delicious chocolate breed puding the creativities knows no bounds. >> thank you mayor for giving us us this opportunity to recognition and people do notice and it means something to them

6:42 pm
the next generation of composers of admissions of people we, you know, to take on this art discipline it was so needed for him to make sure that there were a place a location there was an opportunity to faucet that growth. and i had a chance back in 2020 before the world constitute down to visit this men and women facility i thought we need that in san francisco we're a little bit more charmed krarmd but make that happen that the outdoor facilities the equipment and work and just absolutely men and women amazing we have the conservator of music next door and thank you for setting the standard for the work you've done and i'm glad to have had the opportunity because
6:43 pm
i--i don't know if anyone else has this privilege but i got to person concert michael started going crazy only is piano i was blown away with the emotion if his circus and playing is everything in music that's why we're here and we had a unanimous vote at the board of supervisors and why we continue to insure that his legacy and the work he's done will be reflected in the next generation of conductors and composers and people will continue to deliver music that is in spirit of happiness and enjoy so on behalf of the city and county of san francisco today, we celebrate two m t t and recognize your contributions to music for san francisco and to the world you

6:46 pm
>> (cheering) >> my background is in engineering. i am a civil engineer by
6:47 pm
training. my career has really been around government service. when the opportunity came up to serve the city of san francisco, that was just an opportunity i really needed to explore. [♪♪♪] [♪♪♪] i think it was in junior high and really started to do well in math but i faced some really interesting challenges. many young ladies were not in math and i was the only one in some of these classes. it was tough, it was difficult to succeed when a teacher didn't have confidence in you, but i was determined and i realized that engineering really is what i was interested in. as i moved into college and took
6:48 pm
engineering, preengineering classes, once again i hit some of those same stereotypes that women are not in this field. that just challenged me more. because i was enjoying it, i was determined to be successful. now i took that drive that i have and a couple it with public service. often we are the unsung heroes of technology in the city whether it is delivering network services internally, or for our broadband services to low income housing. >> free wi-fi for all of the residents here so that folks have access to do job searches, housing searches, or anything else that anyone else could do in our great city. >> we are putting the plant in the ground to make all of the city services available to our residents. it is difficult work, but it is also very exciting and rewarding
6:49 pm
our team is exceptional. they are very talented engineers and analysts who work to deliver the data and the services and the technology every day. >> i love working with linda because she is fun. you can tell her anything under the sun and she will listen and give you solutions or advice. she is very generous and thoughtful and remembers all the special days that you are celebrating. >> i have seen recent employee safety and cyber security. it is always a top priority. i am always feeling proud working with her. >> what is interesting about my work and my family is my experience is not unique, but it is different. i am a single parent. so having a career that is demanding and also having a child to raise has been a challenge. i think for parents that are
6:50 pm
working and trying to balance a career that takes a lot of time, we may have some interruptions. if there is an emergency or that sort of thing then you have to be able to still take care of your family and then also do your service to your job. that is probably my take away and a lot of lessons learned. a lot of parents have the concern of how to do the balance i like to think i did a good job for me, watching my son go through school and now enter the job market, and he is in the medical field and starting his career, he was always an intern. one of the things that we try to do here and one of my takeaways from raising him is how important internships are. and here in the department of technology, we pride ourselves on our interns. we have 20 to 25 each year. they do a terrific job contributing to our outside plant five or work or our network engineering or our
6:51 pm
finance team. this last time they took to programming our reception robot, pepper, and they added videos to it and all of these sort of things. it was fun to see their creativity and their innovation come out. >> amazing. >> intriguing. >> the way i unwind is with my photography and taking pictures around the city. when i drive around california, i enjoy taking a lot of landscapes. the weather here changes very often, so you get a beautiful sunset or you get a big bunch of clouds. especially along the waterfront. it is spectacular. i just took some photos of big server and had a wonderful time, not only with the water photos,
6:52 pm
but also the rocks and the bushes and the landscapes. they are phenomenal. [♪♪♪] my advice to young ladies and women who would like to move into stem fields is to really look at why you are there. if you are -- if you are a problem solver, if you like to analyse information, if you like to discover new things, if you like to come up with alternatives and invent new practice, it is such a fabulous opportunity. whether it is computer science or engineering or biology or medicine, oh, my goodness, there are so many opportunities. if you have that kind of mindset i have enjoyed working in san francisco so much because of the diversity. the diversity of the people, of this city, of the values, of the talent that is here in the city. it is stimulating and motivating
6:53 pm
and inspiring and i cannot imagine working anywhere else but in sannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
6:54 pm
>> you don't know what will be inside the canister until you open it. [♪♪♪] >> these are beautiful, historical drawings of san francisco. these drawings range from 1908 to 2010. [♪♪♪] [laughter] >> i build muscle. a lot of people don't know this, but we have a full team of architects that designed specific buildings and public safety. sometimes it is creating a brand-new building from the ground up. other times it is giving new life to one of our historic structures. [♪♪♪] >> i had to have some degree of
6:55 pm
artistic skill from a handcraft point of view to become an architect at that time. it is an incredible amount of loss, in my opinion, to not draw by hand. that skill of having to manipulate a pencil or a pen to make line wait and to make the drawing we've. i have seen this development of technology and this huge transformation in the world his that you do leave some things behind that have beauty to them. [♪♪♪] >> now a day, technologies a completely different. we're not using paper, we are not using paint pencils, but we are using computers to model our buildings to produce drawings, it is different craftsmanship. >> in addition to the beautiful drawings, the person who was taking care of our file for almost 30 years was the one who organized those drawings and listed all of them in big binders with all the name of the
6:56 pm
projects, and they were still using these which is amazing. >> 840. we are building an electronic archive of all the drawings for future use. the scanning project started back in march, 2018. we have scans about 36,000 sheets of paper and there's the remaining balance of 93,981. we can do about 100 sheets per day. hopefully by february 2020, it will be completed. >> we feel that our collection of historical drawings represents san francisco's a rich history. not only do we help make history , we also preserve it for the benefit of future generations.
