affordable housing and what was not happening in the stay by when they have an opportunity of to make it easier to produce housing they create opportunity to destroy research to move forward. and as someone who grew up here sadly i saw so many of my friends move from san francisco ways they couldn't afford to live here and seen people hard work the carpenters and other organizations move away from san francisco because they cal state university afford to live and here and making sure that san francisco is a place for all again increasing a place you make a lot of money and can afford to live here, or you're lucky any enough to see a family what a house you're lucky enough to inherent or qualify more affordable housing and what happens to everyone else? we we

have to fend for ourselves and figure out while we continue to put obstruction in policies before us that make it, too difficult to build we're sick 6 people so to speak out boo side of their mouth this is not just about trying to build housing no. you now that is to making sure the next generation of san franciscans growing up here can afford to live here i remember when i ran for mayor one of the only persons to support scott wiener that sb loud for the intensity of san francisco and people said you'll lose the raise you're supported there and building more housing in place where housing to stuck and what i said how many of you were born and raised in san francisco or been here more than 14th century

san francisco because of housing shortages we watched our members are commuting to sacramento stockton and mo deft and fresno and watching as the housing crisis tears apart working class community as a tears apart our climate and infrastructure we watched coa the state residential construction becomes a crime scene of production were nearly 100 percent of workforce is subject to expiration and human trafficking. so the carpenters said enough is enough. working with community groups a strong partner including mayor london breed including supervisor dorsey and is a matter of fact, are wiener owe challenges like 18 to 12 and

sb 4 and finally finally allows the missing middle to be built in the communities that need it the most and lifting up all construction w prevailing wage and healthcare and real enforcement but again southern segments certain politicians want to play games and politics with housing in san francisco and undermine the state law we fought for and lake theirs while tell thousands of union construction works that there is no plays for in the san francisco not to work and certainly not to live when you play politics with housing you're playing politics are people's lives i'm a richmond school resident and a lifelong member i thought to see more

>> i moved into my wonderful, beautiful, affordable housing march 7th. i have lived in san francisco since i was two-years-old. i've lived in hunters view for 23 to 24 years now. my name is vlady. i use titus and i am the resident commissioner for the san francisco housing facility. from the very beginning, this whole transition of public housing and affordable housing was a good idea.

but many, many residents didn't think it would ever actually happen. it's been a life changing experience. and i'm truly grateful for the whole initiative and all those that work on the whole sf initiative. they've done a wonderful job accommodating the residents, who for many years have lived in delap tated housing. now they have quality housing. i was on a street where the living room and the kitchen and stairs. it wasn't large enough to accommodate. the children are grown. i had the accomplish of having a dishwasher in my home. i really like that. [laughter] i really like not having to wash dishes by hand. we still do it from time to time. the mayor's office has been a real friend to us, a partner.

we know that our city supports us. i love san francisco. just to be able to stay in my community and continue to help the residents who live here and continue to see my neighborhoods move into new housing, it's been a real joy. it's been a real joy. [music] >> san francisco is known as yerba buena, good herb after a mint that used to grow here. at this time there were 3

settlements one was mission delores. one the presidio and one was yerba buena which was urban center. there were 800 people in 1848 it was small. a lot of historic buildings were here including pony express headquarters. wells fargo. hudson bay trading company and famous early settlers one of whom william leaderdorph who lived blocks from here a successful business person. african-american decent and the first million airin california. >> wilwoman was the founders of san francisco. here during the gold rush came in the early 1840s. he spent time stake himself as a merchant seaman and a business person. his father and brother in new orleans. we know him for san francisco's

history. establishing himself here arnold 18 twoochl he did one of many things the first to do in yerba buena. was not california yet and was not fully san francisco yet. >> because he was an american citizen but spoke spanish he was able to during the time when america was taking over california from mexico, there was annexations that happened and conflict emerging and war, of course. he was part of the peek deliberations and am bas doorship to create the state of california a vice council to mexico. mexico granted him citizenship. he loaned the government of san francisco money. to funds some of the war efforts to establish the city itself and the state, of course. he established the first hotel

here the person people turned to often to receive dignitaries or hold large gatherings established the first public school here and helped start the public school system. he piloted the first steam ship on the bay. a big event for san francisco and depict instead state seal the ship was the sitk a. there is a small 4 block long length of street, owned much of that runs essentially where the transamerica building is to it ends at california. i walk today before am a cute side street. at this point t is the center what was all his property. he was the person entrusted to be the city's first treasurer. that is i big deal of itself to have that legacy part of an

african-american the city's first banker. he was not only a forefather of the establishment of san francisco and california as a state but a leader in industry. he had a direct hahn in so many things that we look at in san francisco. part of our dna. you know you don't hear his anymore in the context of those. representation matters. you need to uplift this so people know him but people like him like me. like you. like anyone who looks like him to be, i can do this, too. to have the city's first banker and a street in the middle of financial district. that alone is powerful.
