folks joining us here today some you'll hear from in a moment i want to take an opportunity to acknowledge this amazing hotel more than one hundred years old 2 a hundred employees and a vibrate part of san francisco thank you for allowing us to host this press conference here today to talk about the things that that san francisco has planned for this holiday season. some of those things are fun, but, of course, some of those things are to make sure that we people are safe while shopping and having fun, i want to say based on the partnering with the union square alliance done great things closing down the streets to allow for holiday lanes where people have hot cocoa and move around a little bit more than easily and also joy the public

streets and spaces in a way that invites in the holiday season already as a tree let's and thanks to macy's and starting to look beautiful in downtown last night a great restaurant for people shopping and eating and love the most is the fact that the holidays lights bring joy and see so, so many people skating we were still skating an the ice skating ring that has negligible rewant to invite the people to shop and we know there are a lot of great stores for people to shop and great places for folks to eat in what we usually do every holiday season we increase the public safety i know you see some of the ambassadors here those are the

folks have been incredible as it relates to public safety and why in the central park of the city and county of san francisco under central station i know the chief will talk about that in a moment but has been over 4 o percent crime down because of officers and you investments and i think want to thank the downtown ambassadors and union square ambassadors they've been a welcome addition to the community. and we have retired police officers ambassadors the easy and easier on the streets not only dealing with the issues but the big city issues we have to be honest thing will happen by but we have a response as a response has been swift especially with the men and

women of the police department and how they respond we want to appreciate the work we do that the sheriff's department. and you'll hear a little bit about the additional support they will be providing. but the goal is to make sure that from the garage where you park or the bus you get off or the more than or lyft from have whatever experience adopt you don't have to worry about things because we are here to support you and protect you and make sure that the experience you have is a great one here in san francisco. this holiday season we have so many more to talk about i want to give some of the people that are joining us a chance to give you a how the of some things you want to experience the magic of the holidays in san francisco and in particular in the square is a ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the person in

excite btsdz about couching the holidays and i first want to thank mayor london breed for her support and supporting the police department and mayor london breed three years ago to this date that said we must have police officers visible in union square. we must have safety and have promotes and we must invite everyone from all over the region to come to eucalyptus to celebrate san francisco o san francisco and shop and spending time with their families we're down over in crime we're dowel u down in 40 percent for the city and that didn't happen that happens because we have officer that are visible and apprehend thinkinging those responsibility we are to make sure we have police officers that are visible that are able to respond rapid

is in this area we we have several stores for shopping and restaurants you can fuel up while you're a shopping our goals and the sheriff's office to make sure that everyone is safe we're working with every partner that is behind me to make sure i all are safe when you come to to san francisco could. the ice skating rink and you'll have more fun so san francisco sheriff's office will provide many different things he's talked about who will have patrols in the area as well as along with the cord and you'll see marked vehicles maybe seen them in the area search warrants and you may see some ask for a sticker letting them know they need to have stickers our

exhibiting senior art work across the bay for 30 years as part of our traveling exhibit's program. for this exhibits we partnered with the san francisco art's commission galleries and excited show case the array of artist in historic san francisco city hall. >> [inaudible]. call me temperature is unique when we get to do we, meaning myself and the 20 other professional instructors we are working with elders we create long-term reps i can't think of another situation academically where we learn about each other.

and the art part i believe is a launching pad for the relationship building:see myself well. and if i don't try when my mom again. she may beat the hell out of mow if i don't try >> seniors, the population encounters the problem of loneliness and isolation even in a residential community there hen a loss of a spouse. leaving their original home. may be not driving anymore and so for us to be ail to bring the classes and art to those people where hay are and we work with people in all walks of life and circumstances but want to finds the people that are isolated and you know bring the warmth there as much as art skill its personal connection. men their family can't be well for them.

i can be their fell and feel it. >> i don't have nobody. people say, hi, hi. hello but i don't know who they are. but i come here like on a wednesday, thursday and friday. and i enjoy. >> we do annual surveys asking students what our program does for them. 90 plus % say they feel less alone, they feel more engaged. they feel more socially connected the things you hope for in general as we age. right? >> and see when i do this. i am very quiet. i don't have anybody here talking to me or telling me

something because i'm concentrating on had i'm doing and i'm not talking to them. >> not just one, many students were saying the program had absolutely transformational for them. in said it had saved their lives. >> i think it is person to support the program. because i think ida elder communities don't get a lot of space in disability. we want to support this program that is doing incredible work and giving disability and making this program what supports the art and health in different way bunkham art as a way of expression. a way of like socializing and giving artists the opportunity also to make art for the first time, sometimes and we are excited that we can support this

stories and honor their stories through art. we hope the people will feel inspired by the variety and the quality of the creative expressions here and that viewers come, way with a greater appreciation of the richness what elders have to share with us. [♪♪♪] >> these are beautiful, historical drawings of san francisco. these drawings range from 1908 to 2010. [♪♪♪] [laughter] >> i build muscle. a lot of people don't know this, but we have a full team of architects that designed specific buildings and public safety. sometimes it is creating a brand-new building from the ground up. other times it is giving new life to one of our historic structures. [♪♪♪] >> i had to have some degree of artistic skill from a handcraft point of view to become an architect at that time. it is an incredible amount of

loss, in my opinion, to not draw by hand. that skill of having to manipulate a pencil or a pen to make line wait and to make the drawing we've. i have seen this development of technology and this huge transformation in the world his that you do leave some things behind that have beauty to them. [♪♪♪] >> now a day, technologies a completely different. we're not using paper, we are not using paint pencils, but we are using computers to model our buildings to produce drawings, it is different craftsmanship. >> in addition to the beautiful drawings, the person who was taking care of our file for almost 30 years was the one who organized those drawings and listed all of them in big binders with all the name of the projects, and they were still using these which is amazing.

>> 840. we are building an electronic archive of all the drawings for future use. the scanning project started back in march, 2018. we have scans about 36,000 sheets of paper and there's the remaining balance of 93,981. we can do about 100 sheets per day. hopefully by february 2020, it will be completed. >> we feel that our collection of historical drawings represents san francisco's a rich history. not only do we help make history , we also preserve it for the benefit of future generations.
