10:00 am
in union square. and don't miss the world premiere of a why not christmas carol. good morning, everyone. i'm san francisco mayor london breed, and i am so glad to be here to kick off the annual safe shopper in union square this holiday season. and i just want to thank all the folks who are joining us here today. some you will hear from in just a moment, but i do want to take an opportunity to acknowledge this amazing hotel, which is more than 100 years old, 200 rooms 100 employees
10:01 am
and a vibrant part of san francisco. so thank you so much for opening up your doors and allowing us to host this press conference here today to talk about some of the things that san francisco has planned for this holiday season. some of those things are fun, but of course, some of those things are to make sure that people are safe while they're shopping and having fun. and first, i want to just say, based on our partnership with the union square alliance, we've been doing some great things including closing down our streets to allow for holiday lane, where people can have hot cocoa, hang out and just move around a little bit more easily but also enjoy our public streets and spaces in a way that just invites in the holiday season. already the tree is lit thanks to macy's, and it's just
10:02 am
starting to look beautiful. i was in downtown last night. chateau mate is a great restaurant as well as a number of other places. people were still shopping. they were eating. but what i love the most is the fact that the holiday lights really brought so much joy. and to see so many people skating. it was cold last night and people were still skating on the ice skating rink. it was absolutely incredible. we want to invite the public to come down and to shop, and we know that there are a lot of great stores for people to shop in great places for people to eat in, and what we usually do every holiday season is we increase our public safety presence. now, i know you see some of our ambassadors here. these are the folks that have been incredible as it relates to public safety and why in the central part of the city and county of san francisco under central station. and i know assistant chief david lazar will talk about that in
10:03 am
just a moment. but crime overall has declined by over 40% because of our police department, our ambassadors and all the investments that we have made to make downtown a lot safer. so i want to thank the downtown ambassadors. i want to thank the union square ambassadors. they have been a welcomed addition to the community. we also have some retired police officer ambassadors, and they are just really the eyes and ears on the streets dealing with not just safety issues, but big city related issues, because we got to be very honest, things will happen. but the difference is we have a response for it and the response has been swift especially with the men and women of the san francisco police department and how they respond. we also want to appreciate the work that we do with the sheriff's department and you'll hear just a little bit about some of the additional support that they will be providing. but the goal is to make sure that from the garage
10:04 am
where you park or the bus where you get off, or the uber or lyft that you transport yourself to in order to have whatever experience you want to have downtown, you don't have to worry about a thing because we are here to support you, to protect you, and to make sure that the experience you have is a great one. here in san francisco this holiday season. we have so much more to talk about, so much more that's going on. but i want to give some of the people who are joining us here today a chance to give you a highlight of some of those things. it's going to make you want to experience the magic of the holidays in san francisco and in particular, union square. so ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the person who's in charge of the union square alliance. and has been a strong advocate for downtown marissa rodriguez. thank you to our
10:05 am
mayor. and of course, thank you to everything she has done to ensure the safety of our community. i'm marissa rodriguez, the ceo of the union square alliance, and i am just so happy to be here because this is more than just a season. this is how we celebrate life's greatest moments here in union square. this is the iconic city center that we cherish so much. it is our rockefeller center of the west, and we want to keep it safe and welcoming for all northern california's bay area residents, san franciscans and visitors from all over the world to enjoy. i want to acknowledge the marker hotel where we are today. because of the weather. i want to thank brian fenwick, our gm here, for allowing us to host this incredible event in his hotel. round of applause to the marker hotel. a warm, toasty fireplace behind us always makes the holidays even better, and i know that they're going to be hosting carolers throughout the holiday season, so come to the marker. enjoy the holidays.
10:06 am
you're going to walk up powell street and you're going to see the ornament trail, and it's going to be adorned with ornaments. and our beautiful signature blue carpet that we put out for winter walk as well. so we want to thank, of course, the mayor's office. i know sarah is standing behind me also right now. we want to thank them for all of their support. we want to thank build group. we want to thank jpmorgan. we want to thank amazon. we want to thank all of our partners, zoox and waymo and the gap for all that they're doing to continue in the spirit of the holidays here in union square. and when you make your way up the street, you're going to make your way to the center of the plaza where the macy's great tree. and of course jonathan davis is behind me here. and you're going to hear from him, the gm of macy's and their fabulous decor for the holiday season. it's light. it's bright and it's sparkling already. and then of course the ice rink is open and people are ice skating rain or shine. and you'll make your way down to the
10:07 am
winter walk two blocks of stockton street covered in blue turf with two music stages. food trucks and a makers market so you can get those stocking stuffers. stocking stuffers for the holiday season. we want to thank all of our partners that come together to really make union square safe, not just through the holidays, but all year round. we have our ambassadors at the mayor mentioned our union square ambassadors, our yerba buena ambassadors here, our s.f. travel ambassadors here. it does take a village, and it is so important because our visitors and our hotel and tourism and hospitality community is so needing of this support especially during the holidays. so we can all have a wonderful time. i know mta is here. i see jeff behind me as well and our other partners. we have central station here. we are in the central district. we want to thank our lieutenant dean hall for all of his support. he's back here a round of applause for dean. if you can come up this is how we keep our union
10:08 am
square safe. and of course our assistant chief lazard, for all he does to support the district. i want to wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday season, because that's exactly what it's going to be this year. we are going to enjoy these holidays. we're very excited and we're going to toast a safe new year. thank you so much. and please welcome assistant chief of the san francisco police department david lazar. all right. good morning, everyone, and thank you mayor breed. and this is really an exciting moment for us. unlike some press conferences where we're not delivering the best of news, we are super excited about kicking off the holidays and spending the holidays with each and every one of you. i first want to thank our mayor, mayor breed for her tremendous support on public safety, supporting the san francisco police department, and it was mayor breed three years
10:09 am
ago, almost to the date that said we must have police officers visible in union square. we must have safety. we must promote public safety, and we must invite everyone from all over the region to come to union square, to celebrate in san francisco, to shop and to enjoy time with their families. and we have done that. and as the mayor has alluded, we are down overall in the city, 30% in crime. we're down significantly in violent crime, but we're down. we're down 40% in larceny and property crime. and that just doesn't happen. that happens because we have officers that are out visible preventing and apprehending those that are responsible. this year is no different. we are going to make sure that we have police officers that are visible, that are able to respond rapidly. you'll see officers all over the area in union square. we've already doubled more than doubled our number of police officers. we are here 24 hours a day, keeping watch on the whole area. i encourage everyone to
10:10 am
come to union square because it is safe. my family is included in that. we will be spending time down here as well. i want to thank our ambassadors, our partners that are here, but i also want to thank the sheriff's department. you'll hear in a moment from assistant sheriff carter but we also have our rec and park rangers that are here and it takes all of us to make sure that we're promoting public safety. i, too want to thank central station, led by captain eric kim, but also by lieutenant dean hall and all of his officers. it's because of his leadership that we have a safer union square, the safest it's been in many, many years. and with that, i to wish everyone a happy holiday. i look forward to seeing everyone over the next few weeks. i will say i'm sure mayor breed will like this. we also are going to be bringing our mounted unit and marissa as well. marissa likes seeing the horses coming around. that is old school san francisco. that's
10:11 am
that's what we did. we'll have to clean up. of course we're responsible for that our horses. but we definitely want to bring that tradition back to union square. we're thankful for marissa and all her support for that. and with that, i'm going to pass it back to the mayor. thank you. thank you, chief lazar, for all your hard work and we really come a long way. we have almost 100 people set to graduate from the san francisco police academy. we're using drones and surveillance technology, things that we didn't have the ability to use before. so i'm really grateful. and not to mention some of the bollards and barriers and things that we are going to set up in various locations to ensure that we're continuing to not only protect people, we're protecting property. and so we are so grateful to the san francisco police department for all their amazing work. and also their follow through when these crimes are committed. and look, this is a joyous occasion, but the evidence has demonstrated that
10:12 am
when something happens, you will get caught. you will get arrested, and our district attorney will prosecute. so come to san francisco to have fun. only. and with that, i'd like to introduce our assistant sheriff of the sheriff's department tanzanica carter. well, it's beginning to look a lot like the holiday season. i'm loving this hotel. thank you for the warm fireplace behind all i need is some hot cocoa to make it complete next year. the san francisco sheriff's office wants to encourage all of our community members and visitors to come to union square for their shopping experience. you have already heard from many people how amazing this area is and we have several stores for shopping and some fantastic restaurants so that you can fuel up while you're shopping. our goal in the san francisco sheriff's office is to ensure
10:13 am
that everyone is safe. we are working with every partner that you see behind me to ensure that you all are safe. when you come to san francisco, come to the ice skating rink, come to the restaurants, come to the shopping, and have so much fun that you'll never want to leave the san francisco sheriff's office will provide many different things that we've already talked about. we will have supplemental patrols in this area as well along with the powell street corridor. you will see marked vehicles. you may have already seen them in this area as long as well as foot patrol. and if you see some ask for a sticker, i'm letting them know they need to have stickers. i want to make sure our children know that we are here to make sure they're safe, and we'll also provide some traffic enforcement. i want to thank also the san francisco police department. we have our ambassadors and other law enforcement agencies here, but also our deputies who are doing
10:14 am
an amazing job of making sure that we are all safe. don't forget when you go out there again to have fun, but also have a little hot chocolate on your way out the door. and also if you're adventurous, make sure you go by the skating rink. maybe i'll see you there as well. with that happy holidays and see you soon! thank you so much sheriff carter and i just want to emphasize one of the things you said you will be helping with the issues around traffic on our streets and doing what's necessary. so make sure you obey all traffic signals and right turn lanes and all the other things that you need to do. we not only want to make sure that people are safe when they're shopping we want to make sure people are safe on the streets as well. so we appreciate the additional assistance in that role. and
10:15 am
again, a lot of the reason why we are here is because we're announcing a robust operation where we're going to be increasing our presence and our enforcement efforts, specifically in the downtown union square area. so with that i want to bring up someone who is one of my favorite people because i love macy's and i love macy's during the holiday season. and we want to really appreciate the fact that macy's has been a real partner, and they have brought so much joy to union square. the tree is lit the wreaths are up, people are already smiling as they shop and purchase toys and everything else. and we are hoping that people come and shop at macy's regularly, as well as the many stores around the area. this holiday season. so please welcome the manager of the macy's store downtown union square, jonathan davis. thank
10:16 am
you so much, mayor breed. my name is jonathan davis and i'm the store manager. i have the wonderful honor of being the store manager of macy's union square. macy's is committed to our community and our local partners. we continue to support the union square area as a top retail destination. and this is through our wonderful events. we have the great tree, we have our sf spca holiday windows that we will unveil tomorrow. so come by check us out. and of course we have santa. together with the union square alliance and mayor breed, we share in this vision to deliver the best shopping and visitor experience right here in one of the greatest cities in the world. so please come continue to create those holiday moments with us. we would love to help you curate and complete your holiday list this holiday season. thank you so much. and i
10:17 am
also just want to mention the city and county of san francisco under my office of economic and workforce development is investing in a lot of the activation on union square specifically to have events and carolers and other activations that also bring in the spirit of the holiday season. so i do want to appreciate sarah dennis phillips for the work that the office of economic and workforce development is doing to make those investments in the downtown and providing support in some of the new businesses that will be opening and those that have already opened. i've been hearing a lot of great things from so many of our retailers about the increase in sales, and we want to keep that going, so that's why we're stepping it up and making sure that downtown is not only a place to shop, but it's an inviting experience. and last but not least, to speak representing the recreation and
10:18 am
park department, who's responsible for the union square garage in that particular location. please welcome kat anderson. i think it's still morning. good morning everybody. so i'm kat anderson, president of the commission. and also known as the recreation department of fun. we're here so honorably in in front of this beautiful fireplace and the marker hotel. again, thank you for the hosts and for the mayor for bringing us all together. you know, the union square area is not just a shopping mecca but it's been a public plaza since the 1800s. it's one of san franciscans favorite gathering places. and we have the holiday ice rink that everyone has talked about. so far, as well as the macy's tree and the bill graham menorah. it is a place where my family and thousands, if not millions of families over the years come and enjoy themselves and they take pictures. and i just it makes me
10:19 am
so proud to think about all the people putting those pictures in their photo albums. mayor london breed's commitment to the union square reflects her vision for vibrant, safe spaces throughout san francisco and by investing in initiatives like this, the safe shopper program, and supporting holiday events. she's ensuring that the union square remains a welcoming and family friendly destination at the heart of our city, a space where residents and visitors and businesses can thrive. since we are so thankful to you, madam mayor, for this, i want to send a shout out to all of our ambassadors and especially our park rangers. we have deputy chief marcus santiago here from the park rangers, who will also be partnering with sfpd and our sheriff's department in keeping our public spaces especially safe. and also i'll just ask marcus, please make sure we also have the stickers available for the children, right? yeah. all right. so always feel that you can come and talk with our talk
10:20 am
with our leaders and talk with our people who are keeping us safe. and they'll tell you about what's going on and how much the excitement around the holidays is really helping san francisco and its economic recovery. so i promise that when you come here, you will have a very satisfactory urban experience and you'll have the time and the space to pick out the perfect gifts and create those special memories for your family knowing that san francisco has your back. so thank you and happy holidays. all right again, enjoy the holidays. thank you all so much for coming and we look forward to seeing you. maybe downtown union square on santa's lap or taking photos with your family in front of the trees. but more importantly, get down there and spend some money. thank you.
10:21 am
so i began at west bay in 2007. i had no idea what it was going to be like but when i entered, it was over 50 kids in a really small room who were just so happy that someone was there to help them. and honestly, like i share that story because that's really when i fell in love with who west bay is. my name is carla laurel, and i'm the director of west bay filipino multi-service center. in the spring of 2007, when i was at usf, i was taking a philippine studies class. we had to do community service hours. i was
10:22 am
very last minute, so i was the last one to sign up for a place. and the only place that didn't have volunteers yet was west bay started off as a volunteer there. i knew nothing about the community. i just saw kids that were trying their best, that were growing up in a place that might just be filled with a lot of homelessness and violence and drug use, but they didn't care, and they just wanted more. and i was just like, i want to be in soma. i want to help and see what i can do. 2007 when i started, west bay didn't have a lot of funding. when we were there. honestly, it's just like, you know, when a family fills up a space. like, i didn't even realize how small it was. and so at our old space, we probably had not more than 1500ft!s. our programing was timed such that everyone was like in the same space, using the same things
10:23 am
and we're all kind of like always on top of each other. but while one group was moving in, there was another group already waiting in the back. but i think the beauty of it also is our community is so intergenerational that it didn't feel unfamiliar to how we operate culturally, especially in this neighborhood. a lot of our families live in single room occupancies. they live in really small apartments, but like the lights are always working. our supplies at that time were really limited. kids had their pencils with their names on it but in many ways what was beautiful was that it was just the community that you can really see. i watch all the films. people don't realize that there's even a thriving filipino community here, but there's such a rich history of filipino families here when it comes to a filipino in the soma. i am the filipino in soma. so my name is rudy corpus jr. i'm born and raised in san francisco, the south of market district. been here all my life. i'm still here. i mean, there's plenty of opportunities around here like west bay west bay. i used to go
10:24 am
there when i was little, and i used to go there, honestly because it was young teenagers my age that was there, and i would go over there just to kick it with them. the people who ran it back then they would teach you leadership skills about empowerment. those are the same values i run with my organization now. it's the same thing they taught me way back then. my first interaction with rudy is he pulled up at the front of west bay's door with like, backpacks. and he's like, we got backpacks new school year here. and he just, like dropped them out of his van and then drove away. and i was like, who is this guy? when i was here, i started seeing west bay more often. and so when our organizations would come together, you know, and do community work together, i would see her in traffic. my motto, it takes the hood to say the hood, you ain't got to be from the hood to take care of the hood. you just got to have a caring and loving heart. and she has that. i just remember telling
10:25 am
myself like, it's what you put into it, and there's a lot more resources than you think. you just have to figure out a way to navigate through everything. and she didn't have a problem saying hey, do you mind introducing me to this man or to this woman? and i would do it. so i just want you guys to know that everything that you do to support our organization has allowed us to help those that are most in need and we couldn't have done it without each and every one of you. so thank you so much. there's always been a struggle i think when you are renting out a commercial space because your security there isn't always guaranteed. and i think our lease was always pending like of like, is it going to get renewed again? and it was really hard. it was like a struggle. by the time we came around to get our building. rudy honestly has been instrumental in our getting our building. when i started becoming director in 2017, i remember just thinking, we want our own center too. and i literally just asked him, like what did you do? and he was very transparent and gave the blueprint, but it was just like okay, now you got to do it. she
10:26 am
paid attention and she saw what worked and what didn't work. and so from there she did everything else. all i had to do was lay out the carpet and say, this is so. and so. but after that it was like, but it's up to you to like, see through those relationships and see through those connections. i think there's a lot of resources and ways that the city tries to help nonprofits have stable roots. it's just making sure that you know all of them and avail of all of them. in the south of market, there's a soma stabilization fund. when new development happens in this neighborhood that money goes to the existing community that's here advocated heavily for funds there, and not a lot of folks were buying their spaces. so we were able to get $3 million. with the support of mayor breed i supported west bay and its goal of purchasing its own building. because of the incredible work that they do in
10:27 am
the tenderloin community. the fact that, you know, you can come to san francisco and find a community because of west bay and have supportive services, it is so meaningful and makes such a difference. so it's about time that they have a place to call home. let's get this building open as soon as we possibly can. your support is the critical part of the homestretch. let's get it done, everybody. you can join me in welcoming senator scott wiener. i knew about west bay for a long time. and then when i was on the board of supervisors, i first started to interact with west bay and, you know, get to know the organization better and then once i was in the state senate representing the entire city, i started working even more intensively with west bay. i remember going to an asian american heritage month celebration. i think that was put on by the city, and he ended up coming there. and i remember that rudy knew him. rudy corpus.
10:28 am
so i remember he was talking to him and i was like, can you introduce me to him? he's like, sure. and he literally just introduced me and i what i appreciated so much about senator wiener is i met him that one time, and i literally just said, can i meet with you next week? and he said, yes. and they talked about what the vision was for this building. and i shared with him what west bay was trying to do. we've never had a permanent home. when i heard about the project and got the details, i found it very exciting. and so it definitely motivated me to try to help in years that are good in the budget. i'm, you know, able to obtain funding for local community projects. and i remember maybe a month later getting an email from his aide saying there's actually a surplus this year. and so we want to appropriate money for your building. and i was just so grateful because to see how literally one meeting, one interaction, one meeting, and then we want to fund you and support you because this is important. yeah. it was really
10:29 am
we're really grateful. and i think he's a big part of why we were able to get this space. 123000 whoa. oh man. this is a good thing for the kids to do, man. it was honestly really really surreal. this is crazy. oh, man. and to actually see like now it's transforming into our center is super exciting. wow. as an organization that's been in the neighborhood for over 56 years, this space to me like signifies what every community deserves. fun and exciting event that we have. west bank's groundbreaking. can i get a round of applause? everybody to whatever. and the fact that this is just like happening, it speaks volumes about carla and genevieve and the entire west bay team. you know, all these years that i've known west bay, they've been in spaces where it was small. and
10:30 am
for them to last this long and to have them a foundation now where they'll be set and the leadership that they have currently, right now, and the staff and the workers and the people involved in west bay now that right there is amazing. all right, everybody, we're here at the new building. come, come. yes. super exciting. and when we make our way this way, we have a kitchen as well. woo! we finally have bathrooms, guys. so we have two sinks over there if you see. and then we have an accessible bathroom. but this is the downstairs. woo. all right. oh wait guys we're over here. so today we are able to bring the staff out to finally see our new center our new home. and it's really fun and exciting. it's just right up there. there's no
10:31 am
worker's comp. it's just right up there. it's white. more than half of the staff are up on the roof so we're really excited. i think just the opportunity to actually explore different spaces is super exciting. and our other space we really just have a big room. i still just believe it's real. see this? after all these years? it's been amazing. so thank you though. so we this is for real. this is beautiful. welcome home. half of the city and county of san francisco. we're going to make your west bay day in san francisco. i am, like overwhelmed with gratitude. i
10:32 am
stand here merely as a representative of an organization whose existence supersedes mine. west bay's motto is there is no greater wealth than the knowledge of self. know who you are. we couldn't have been here. i keep saying it without every single person here. we wanted to make sure we had a seat at the table and i'm so happy and honored to say that we don't even have a seat. we own the table. we own the kitchen. we all know all home. five, four. three. two. one.
10:33 am
10:34 am
proud to be here today because of all the incredible work that we have done to finally stop talking about how much we support small businesses and start investing and changing our bureaucracy from a city of no to a city of yes. gg's is a result of that, as well as so many businesses that have benefited from vacant to vibrant programs where we worked with business owners to get free space and to provide grants from the office of economic and workforce development. so folks had seed money. so the city was like the angel investor of these businesses because we know how hard it is. when you have an idea, you have a passion, you have something you want to do, and then the city gets in the way. we are changing that and we are making it easier for people to open businesses like this and to grow and to thrive. and that means removing the red tape. now, one of the things i'm really proud of is prop h. some
10:35 am
of you helped and supported prop h to get rid of some of those layers of bureaucracy. and as a result you know, we've done a number of other things, including get rid of over 100 requirements of small businesses and please do not ask me what they are, but nevertheless flex retail. can we say yay for flex retail where you were limited by what you can do in the business? to one thing or another? now it's like all of the above and making it easy for businesses to be successful and if necessary for businesses to pivot when something isn't working, making it easy to get to. yes, and that's what's exciting. and then investing the financial support, the seed money necessary through grant opportunities because then businesses can build out and they can hire people and they can become successful as they get going and more importantly they can thrive. that is the goal of the work that we have been doing over the past couple
10:36 am
of years. and despite a global pandemic we've still been able to see thousands of new businesses open and take advantage of our program first year free. that is one of the things that i am most excited about because instead of waiting two years to open your business and the city charging you all this money that you have to pay even when your business is not open, we eliminated all city fees. the first year for all new small businesses. i can go on and on and on and today we're here just to celebrate all the work that we've done together including investment in nightlife, providing grants for nightlife and entertainment allowing our streets to be used to celebrate and to have fun and look at who's coming. when i say fun, our drag laureate. darcy is the first ever drag laureate in the world right here in san francisco. but nevertheless, you know, i'm grateful to be here because i'm so proud of all the
10:37 am
work we've done, the community said what they wanted, and we responded. we made those investments. now we have night markets. now we have an entertainment zone. the first ever in the state of california. now we have opportunities to ensure that san francisco is a vibrant place and it's a vibrant place, not just because of our great small businesses and our nightlife and entertainment. it's a vibrant place because of the people. the people are the ones that make this go round. and so today we're really excited to be here to recognize all the significant accomplishments, to help ensure that small businesses open, grow and thrive in the city and county of san francisco. so thank you all so much for being here to celebrate this extraordinary milestone. and with that, let me introduce the director of the office of economic and workforce development to talk more about how much money we've invested to
10:38 am
help support a lot of these businesses is no other than the director of that department, sarah dennis. philip. thank you mayor breed. so excited to be here today on this corner, on this corridor where you can see multiple businesses that are the result of mayor breed's investments in small business over the past couple of years. i know i speak for my colleague katie tang who runs the office of small business under mayor breed, who sadly could not join today when we both say thank you, mayor breed for your leadership in this direction. because of these investments we're delivering on our promise of an economic recovery that benefits all san franciscans across the city. just cutting the amount of red tape and fees alone is transforming the small business landscape and making it possible for people to get in the game and continue san francisco's legacy of unique individual, owner based, small business. in talking to arthur
10:39 am
today, i'm just going to note because it was very exciting. he found it much, much easier to open this small business than get housing. so that's our next front that we're going to work on. so mayor breed the next administration has some big shoes to fill when it comes to matching your level of investment. these past four years, $15 million in this year's budget alone has gone, is going to small business investment and we're going to see more businesses like gigi's as the result of this. i'm also thrilled to announce that because of that leadership, i was able to join forces with main street launch. and i think some folks from main street launch are here today that will provide a new loan opportunity for businesses who want to expand or move downtown. so rohan kalberg and carla de leon from main street launch, i believe are here with us today under their program, starting now, qualifying businesses can apply for up to $100,000 in loans with a limited 4% capped interest rate. and on top of
10:40 am
that, because of mayor breed's leadership, the city can further support those new businesses with our new $25,000 open downtown grant, which will launch early next year and allow businesses to pay for their new storefront spaces that they enter into. so we're really excited about this kind of support that will start give entrepreneurs like arthur here, who have struggled to access capital, a shot at contributing to downtown's renaissance. so thank you. thank you, arthur, for everything you've done here to your co-owners, vincent and karen, for hosting us here today. we're all super excited to come back friday. once you're officially open and try the food and wine and we're really grateful for your investment here in this community and in san francisco. with that, it's my pleasure to introduce madison michael, the gm of this amazing new wine bar, madison. thank you for joining us here today. my name is madison michael. i'm the
10:41 am
general manager of gigi's, a vietnamese influenced wine bar in divisadero street. i'm delighted to announce we're opening this friday, november 22nd. yes. thank you. for me gigi's is a reunion in the best sense, bringing together years of friendship and a shared vision with chef two david fu. over the past decade we've collaborated on pop ups and events, honing our unique styles first as colleagues and then as friends working towards our own projects and goals as small business owners from the beginning, the word that keeps coming to mind is playful. with $10 glasses of rosé, saigon style hot dogs and bongs, the team at gigi's wants our guests to have fun. we have so many exciting collaborations and pop ups in the works, and i can't wait to see what this space can offer the neighborhood and the city of san francisco. this offering was made possible in part by an initiative spearheaded by the office of the mayor, such as the first year free program and streamlining the permitting and approval process. in addition, we were supported by a few programs through the office of small business. we received a burial removal grant that helped defray some of the costs of improving
10:42 am
our space. with a special thank you to michelle reynolds and sf new deal. additionally, we extend our gratitude to san francisco department of the environment for our automatic dishwashing grant. okay. yes. yes. i encourage existing and emerging businesses to reach out to the office of small business and periodically check in for new and existing programs that help small businesses. just like ours. the ones that want to invest in the community, create jobs, and invigorate the streets of san francisco. opening a new business and completing tenant improvements are are expensive endeavors and every little bit helps. we chose to open gigi's in san francisco because of the vibrant community here. we are inspired by our neighbors and their love for great wine and food, and we wanted to add something truly special to the industry and the city. the partners behind gigi's and i would like to thank mayor london breed for her consideration for small businesses during her time in office. we also hope that mayor elect daniel lurie and incoming district supervisor bilal mahmoud will continue these endeavors. thank you. i'm
10:43 am
not talking yet. i'm just introducing others while i'm here. i'm going to introduce our broad team members, but i do want to put out a quick thank you to our team at owg, which i neglected to mention. our leadership from katy tang at osb, laurel, our van van who runs our our business development program, and diana ponce de leon, who runs our community economic development program and all of their teams who also contributed to all of the work that under mayor breed's leadership, is helping us open these small businesses while we're here. so another partner outside of that is simon bertrang from our from sf new deal. simon and his team have been incredible partners of mayor breed and of the launch of vacant. vibrant is just one significant milestone in our partnership with them that has allowed us to help more small businesses tenant across the city. so with that, thank you,
10:44 am
simon. thank you sarah. sf new deal is committed to strengthening neighborhoods by making it easier for under-resourced small business owners to succeed. mayor london breed and her team including sarah dennis phillips and the office of economic and workforce development, have been critical partners and champions of our work. they've allowed us to scale that work, and they've allowed us to provide critical support to small business owners that who define the economy culture and identity of san francisco. sf new deal was born out of the crisis of the covid 19 pandemic, but over the past several years, small businesses have faced many and constantly shifting challenges. and sf new deal, with the support of city hall and private funders like wells fargo and jp morgan chase have worked to be responsive to the needs of small business owners and communities. since our founding in 2020, we have supported 1656 businesses citywide with for $49.8 million of direct financial support.
10:45 am
thank you. and in 2024 alone, again in partnership with the city, we've supported over 500 businesses with $6.4 million in direct financial resources that have supported storefront improvement grants. sf shine's capacity building, small business training grants accessible grants. as you as you mentioned, arts and culture events, downtown energy and new pop ups activating vacant storefronts across downtown macon to vibrant. vacant to vibrant. activated 17 storefronts downtown has all already activated 17 storefronts downtown. seven of the nine of the inaugural group have remained to be a permanent part of downtown, and our second group is now engaging in the process of deciding whether or not there is a place for them downtown. six of the eight are still in the process of deciding in the coming months. vacant to vibrant will be expanding into 2 in 2 directions. one is to union square. we're bringing new
10:46 am
opportunities to small businesses, to artists, to cultural organizations to bring new experiences and engagement opportunities to three blocks of powell street. we'll also be expanding vacant to vibrant to additional neighborhoods across downtown. interested businesses and property owners can learn more and apply to participate at vibrant sf. org. beyond our work on vacant, vibrant and downtown energy, sf new deal is invested in supporting small businesses throughout the city. and so, in partnership with the office of economic and workforce development and the office of small business and mayor, london breed sf new deal has efficiently disbursed grants to hundreds of small businesses through sf shine's storefront opportunity grant programs, small business training grant programs, the accessible barrier grant program. these funds are critical lifelines to small businesses as they sustain and grow their businesses, especially in the aftermath of the pandemic. so as we continue to navigate our cultural and economic revitalization, the success of small business and the success of san francisco are one and the same. mayor breed
10:47 am
has championed that work, and we thank her and our partners at owg for recognizing and supporting small businesses and their central place in san francisco's recovery. and now i'm going to invite up one of our partners muhammad ali, the owner of hungry hungry crumb's hungry kitchen and hungry table. good afternoon everyone. i'm mo the owner of hungry kitchens, which includes our newest venture, hungry crumbs. but before i tell you about our cookies, let me share a bit of my journey. i'm born in egypt and coming to this country as an immigrant has shaped not just who i am but how i approach food and community. i've always believed that food has a unique way of bringing people together and bridging cultures. and so when i started hungry kitchens and later hungry crumbs, it was just more than creating businesses. it was about creating spaces where food connects us, empowers us, and makes us feel like we belong.
10:48 am
hungry crumbs is a reflection of this belief. we're bringing something fresh to downtown san francisco, not just in the form of stuffed cookies, but with an atmosphere that feels like home. our goal is to inject a little fun, vibrancy and creativity into downtown scene, making it a space where people can come together, share a treat, and feel part of something special. none of this would have been possible without sf new deal mayor london breed and the office of economic and workforce development. their support has been invaluable in helping us get off the ground and turn our vision into reality. the resources, mentorship and infrastructure they provided have helped expand hungry crumbs and make it part of our larger portfolio of brands. i've always believed that food can be a force of good. as someone who has walked the path of adapting to a new culture i know how powerful it can be to find common ground. that's what we're doing at hungry crumbs and by extension, hungry kitchens, creating a space where people from all walks of life can come
10:49 am
together, celebrate and connect. it's not just about cookies it's about what happens around the table. so please feel free to come by our space at 215 fremont street. and let's celebrate by eating a cookie together. thank you. thank you mo ali. and thank you to everyone who's been able to say just a few words about how significant it is to be here today. now, we talked about food and hungry crumbs. we talked about wine with gigi's and now it's time to talk about fun and entertainment and all of that stuff goes together. the next person i'm about to introduce is the owner of oasis nightclub which is a place where i have seen some of the best performances a number of incredible shows, especially many of our amazing artists from our trans community and drag queens and all of that, you name
10:50 am
it they have been a part of the fabric of what makes san francisco special, and they have really a sanctuary in the oasis nightclub, where all are welcome to come and to enjoy and to share in one another's company. the person who has made that experience possible has been no other than san francisco's first drag laureate of the city, who is an ambassador to all things important about our city, maintaining our history maintaining the fabric of what makes san francisco so special and someone who knows how to deliver on entertainment in so many extraordinary ways. please ladies and gentlemen, welcome darcey dollinger. oh my god thank you so much. you know london breed changed my life in a lot of ways. and so thank you. the drag laureate position and
10:51 am
everything that has grown out of that. and really being able to be a voice for the community has really changed the way i do business. we were i've been in business for almost ten years. i'm about to have our ten year anniversary, so i'm not a new business but we were a business that struggled, you know, tooth and nail to get through the pandemic and get on the other side of it. and then it was still an upward climb. and i got to say, it really means a lot to be seen and really have not just your community see you, but the city, see you and see what we bring to san francisco, not only in entertainment but tax dollars and all of the above. we were lucky enough. my nonprofit arm the oasis arts received a very generous grant from downtown energy and the sf new deal to
10:52 am
produce three public performance, three plays each ran for a month and the final one is still running. it. i can't tell you what it feels like to not be underwater financially all the time, because you are committed to taking care of artists in this city and to finally be like, look, we're breaking even or maybe even turning a profit because the city invested in us and the city. i hope, will continue to invest in us because this is what makes san francisco truly san francisco. and you know what? and i say this all the time, but i know that this woman feels the same way when the tough when things get tough, the tough get fabulous. and so thank you very much to everyone. very, very grateful. thank you. thank you.
10:53 am
thank you darcy. and oh never mind when it gets tough you just pivot to the next speaker right. well thank you again. everyone who has come here. and darcy said it best san francisco is special because of its nightlife, its entertainment its artists, its food, its wine. it's all of that. and i am so glad that despite many of the challenges that we have had to overcome as a city, we are starting to see that sparkle again. that excitement. and speaking of sparkle and excitement, there are so many business owners who are here and i really want to thank new deal and simon for his incredible leadership, because we would not be able to move as fast in supporting vacant to vibrant and supporting the entertainment zones and helping to get the resources to those artists. we wouldn't be able to do it without non-profits like the new
10:54 am
deal that really have helped to make the downtown neighborhood and other parts of san francisco so special. i mean, this really is a partnership, and it's a partnership that has yielded incredible results, and it just gets me excited about what's to come. and speaking of what's to come, make sure that you get your tickets to the golden girls. yeah. i'm not going to miss it this year. darcy. they're moving to the curran because they've you know, gotten so big. but you know, check out these fabulous places i am super excited about gigi's. make sure you come back and make sure you show them support. because when these businesses open we want to make sure that they're supported. and this is an incredible neighborhood that has a lot of folks coffee. we got cocktails we got all of it. and now we have the sophistication of a wine bar, which i'm super excited about. and we want to see you again in this neighborhood. but more importantly, we want to see you

dev mission goal is aiming to train on tap kids, youth and young adults for careers in the tech industry so we can build wealth and prosperity in underserved communities like where we are today. my name is leo sosa. i'm the founder and executive director for dev mission. we're sitting inside the computer lab where residents come and get support when they get help about how to set up an email account, how to order prescriptions online create a resume. we are now also paying attention to provide tech support. we have collaborated
10:57 am
with the san francisco mayor's office and the department of technology to implement a broadband network for their residents here so they can have free internet access. we have partnered with community technology network to provide computer classes to the seniors and the residents. so this computer lab becomes a hub for the community to learn how to use technology. but that's the parents and the adults. we have been able to identify what we call a stem day. the acronym is science, technology, engineering and math. an array of competencies that kids and youth should be exposed no matter what type of background or ethnicity or income status. that's where we actually create magic. something that the kids are really excited about is science. and so the way that we execute that is through making slime. as fun as it is, it's still a
10:58 am
chemical reaction. and you start to understand that with the sort of materials that you need to make the slime they love adding their own little twist to everything. it's just a place for them to experiment, and that's really what we want. oh, i see really what the excitement behind that is that you're making something blocks lego sumo bots art, drawing, computers, minecraft and really it's just an awaking opportunity. keeping their attention is like one of the biggest challenges that we do have because, you know, they're kids. they always want to be doing something, be helping with something. so we just let them be themselves. you know, we have our set of rules in place that we have, that we want them to follow and live up to. and we also have our set of expectations that we want them to achieve. this is like my first year officially, like working with kids. and definitely i've had moments where they're not getting
10:59 am
something, they don't really understand it, and you're trying to just talk to them in a way that they can make it work. teaching them in different ways how they can get the light bulb to go off. and i've seen it like firsthand, and it makes me just like so happy when it does go off because it's like, wow, i helped them understand this concept. my name is august and i'm seven years old and i live in san francisco. i love playing games and i love having fun with my friends, playing dodgeball and a lot of things that i like. that's really cool. they don't give you a lot of cheese to put on there, do they? i got from y'all, i got a little bit left. we're gonna program them to make them work. you need a computer and program c, you plug it in right at the bottom. here we
11:00 am
like name them. and then we talk to them like a little cat. you press these buttons to make it like, go. and this is the turn. it off. and this is to put make it like control on its own. if you press this button twice, it can do like any type of tricks. like you can move them like this and it moves. it actually can like go like this, like, wow, they're just absorbing everything. so it definitely is just like a really whole hearted moment that i love experiencing. this is like every possible place. it could be like any type of place. the realities right now. 5.3 latinos working in tech and about 6.7 african americans working in tech. and of course, those tech companies are our funders. so i continue to work
11:01 am
really hard with them to close that gap and work with the san francisco unified school district. so juniors and seniors come to our program, so kids come to our stem hub and be exposed to all those things. it's a big challenge. we have a couple of other providers here on site, but we've all been just trying to work together and offer the kids as much as they can and let the kids move around from each department. some kids are specifically just coming from dev mission but if they want to jump in with city of dreams or hunters point family, we allow that, and we've just been trying to work collaboratively to present the best opportunities to the community. dev mission has provided services here at 1030 oakdale as well as three harbor on our westbrook side. they have been able to teach youth how to code, to how to build their own mini robot to providing access for the youth to partnerships with adobe and with sony and google and twitter. and so dev
11:02 am
mission has definitely brought access for our families to resources that our residents may or may not have been able to access in the past. and we're very thankful for the san francisco housing development corporation gave us the grant to implement this program. it hasn't been easy, but we have been able to see now some of the success stories of some of those kids that have been able to take the opportunity and continue to grow within their education and eventually, right, become a very successful citizen, right. so the computer lab, they're doing the backpacks. so i don't know if you're going to be able to do the class with the beat. you still want to try? i mean, i could do something for a quick second. yeah. go for it. we have a young man by the name of ivan melo kellum. he came here two and a half years ago to be part of our digital arts music lab program, graduated from our digital arts music lab program natural with fruity loops,
11:03 am
rhymes, all of our music lyrics is clean. became an intern and now he's running the program that just tells you, right? we are only creating opportunities. as a young man by the name of eduardo ramirez, he's getting his haircut in the mission district. he sees a flier for death mission. he tells the barber, hey, what's up with that flier? and he says it's a program that teach you coding and how to take computers apart. oh okay. that'd be kind of cool. so i still remember the day he walked in there with that baseball cap full of tattoos. nice clean haircut. i want to learn how to use computers. all right. graduated from the program and he wanted to work in it. well, eduardo is a dreamer right? so trying to find them a job in the tech industry, being an immigrant a dreamer and a daca youth was very challenging. but that didn't stop him. through the effort of the office of economic and workforce
11:04 am
development and the tech sf grant, i reached out to a few folks that i know postmates decided to bring them on board regardless of his legal status. he ended his apprenticeship program at postmates and now he is at udacity. still a dreamer, still a daca youth. that is the power of what technology does for young people that want to become part of the tech industry. what we've been doing, it's very innovative, helping kids k to 12 transitional age youth, families, parents communities understand and to be exposed to stem subjects. imagine if death mission one day can be in every affordable housing community. the opportunities that we will create. and that's what i'm trying to do with this organization. sfgovtv san

francisco government television. district ten is the place to be having an opportunity to represent the last real black community here in san francisco was very important to me, not only just the black community, but all the communities of color that we have in district ten from bayview-hunters point to potrero hill to visitacion valley to dogpatch to little hollywood. so my family originally migrated from louisiana, and they came and settled here in san francisco. my grandfather worked on the shipyard. i had great uncles and aunts who either worked in the shipyard, or they did some domestic work for other families

here in san francisco. most of my entire life, it was just my mother and i and so i was raised by a single mom, a single parent family. my mom and i lived in west point with my grandmother. we also stayed with my aunt and potrero hill, and that's where i spent my early years in san francisco. as well as also spending some time living in the haight. well, it was important to me to become the supervisor of district ten for so many different reasons. one, it's the place where i'm originally from. it's the place where i actually had my biggest opportunity after graduating from college, coming and working as the executive director of young community developers and having the opportunity to run for the board of supervisors and be able to affect policy, affect change and the very community where my family is from. my name is kelly mccord and i am the owner manager, along with my husband,

ken of mission blue. mission blue really, we're neighbors first, and so when we first came to the neighborhood, we entered the story. we got involved, and we learned that there was an opportunity to get plugged into the merchant corridor and so we see mission blue as kind of setting the table for the community to come together around. good coffee, good pastries and artisan gifts. so when we moved to the neighborhood, we were volunteering in the gardens here, the beautiful greenways and there was just so many butterflies. and i just asked, what's the butterfly of this area? and fran martin says, the mission blue. and we said, well if we ever open anything, we're going to call it mission blue. something, because i was in a chrysalis phase and because the neighborhood was already so beautiful and we wanted to be a part of the becoming, along with the neighborhood, something beautiful. and we wanted to add value to that beauty. one of the great, great hidden secrets of the valley is that is that i we're we're we're we're we're we're we're we're we're we're we're we're we're we're we're we're we're we're we're we're we're we're we're we're we're
