people of india the country's greatest treasure. >> there are many connections between our great city and your great country. san francisco is a leader in technology and you provide technology leaders google, microsoft, ibm, adobe all blessed with leaders born in india. >> you are the most pulous country in the world and among the fastest growing population in the bay area. >> from 2010 to 2020 the population of residents of indian descent grew in san francisco by 144%. we are so pleased to have the people of india increasingly woven into the fabric of san francisco. it is now my great honor to introduce a man who understands the vitality of the indian culture and its importance to the fabric of san francisco. >> a man dedicated to weaving

an exciting new chapter for san francisco. >> please welcome daniel l. >> thank you all very much. it's really an honor to have and in the people's office. so thank you all for being here today to celebrate india's republic day. it is a day that marks the momentous occasion in 1950 when india's constitu mission came into effect laying the foundation for a strong and vibrant democracy. i want to begin by extending my deepest thanks to counsel general reddy and the entire consulate team for your partnership in strengthening the bonds between our two nations. your leadership has played a vital role in nurturing this special relationship. as we just raised the flag today we are celebrating india's remarks bbl history and progress as a nation. i speak for all san franciscans

when i say we are incredibly proud to be home to a thriving indian community. your contributions across technology, business culture and countless other fields have changed and shaped our future in profound ways. i'm especially proud of our sister city relationship with bangalore, a city that has become one of the world's leading tech hubs for 17 years. san francisco and bangalore have worked side by side in innovation, education and business. i would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to jim herlihy who is not here. i know of the chair of our san francisco bangalore sister city committee and mat of murder of misa misra. good to see you again. for their exemplary leadership in advancing this partnership. but our relationship goes beyond business. the cultural exchange ehange between our two nations in the

arts and theater have played an essential and unique role in san francisco's cultural identity. so today as we honor india's republic day, i am excited for the continued growth of our partnership with india and bangalore. and i look forward to many more years of friendship and collaboration. and i was just saying to the consul general that i have not been to india for 25 years but i went to udaipur job four and jaipur and i had the most wonderful experience and it was such a beautiful. those three cities were just gorgeous and i look forward to going back to visit our sister city. so with that is my honor to present this proclamation declaring january 26th as indian-american friendship and heritage day in san francisco. >> i'll come out front.

now as of now the states have horrible mayor daniel luria, chief of protocol penny colter distinguished guests. i must say good morning. so it is a great honor for me to be here today to celebrate the india republic day i will mention. so we celebrate to mark the entry into force of our constitution on 26th■y january 1950. in fact it was celebrated yesterday. but i thank you for organizing this flag raising ceremony at the city hall which is a which is known for its natural beauty but also we think it is a temple of democracy and also the diversity in san francisco. and i think this is a recognition of the contribution of the indian diaspora present not only in san francisco but

also in the larger bay area. so now i think of the indian diaspora over 14,000 strong. so mostly they are known to be very hardworking entrepreneurship and also innovative. so their contribution to this socio economic fabric of the bay area and also the cultural diversity is very well appreciated by all the leadership here. and also this is a day also to celebrate the strong and enduring partnership between india and the us in general and also india and san francisco in particular because we see like we are seeing the growth in the relationship the last few years . in fact yesterday the secretary of state marco rubio while congratulating india on his republic day stated that the u.s. and india partnership will be the defining partnership of the 21st century. and just this morning prime minister modi spoke with president trump. so they also like agreed to

further deepen the partnership in all areas of relationship especially trade, technology, investment, defense and energy. so i think there is a significant opportunity for promoting this partnership. you see the san francisco and the bay area as you rightly mentioned as the tech capital of the us. and all the indian delegations who are visiting us i! think as san francisco become much further destination. just last year alone we have hosted two chief ministers from the states of telangana and tamil nadu who are equal to the governors. so they led a very high level business allegations and also the industries minister from the state of karnataka in which bengaluru is there. we have this extensive partnership even these and very skilled bengaluru team here partnership. they also interact with the industry minister and agreed to further deepen this partnership. and also we had a minister visit from the state of the pradesh. so now we we are having a larger delegation coming from us to india.

and what is happening in fact the indian diaspora is a living bridge between india and the us. and also like largeumber of indian tourists are visiting us. last year according to the us travel and tourism office. i think 2.1 million indian tourists visit us which is a 50% growth over the 2019 pre-pandemic level. i think even understand that we estimate that 400,000 indians must have endured san francisco . so even though indian students are also coming in large numbers to study in the us in california■÷ alone we have over 28,000 students and we have large number of students in the university of san francisco according to the city and also the state university in san francisco. so we see large opportunities and we hope that the the planned visit of the governor to some to india this year will also strengthen the the partnership between california and india because california is an important trading partner of ina. we have close to 12 billion of bilateral trade in merchandise

goods. and also i think indian companies also invested a lot in the bay area. so according to the world trade center, los angeles in california we have to 22 indian owned establishments creating law and order and employment and also paying wages of $1.44 billion every year. and in san francisco bay area alone we have 7000 employment creation and around 160 companies indian owned companies. but we have a large number of indian-americans who are entrepreneurs. they are creating hundreds to thousands of jobs in the bay area. so also the indian diaspora is contributing a lot. and we hope that alone madam agenda is due in return for the back that the quite the india is starting to go back india is growing a lot. so a lot of opportunities i think governor newsom when he was mayor he visited bengaluru i think even after 2013 edward at that time he visited india but i request you also i invite

richmond. >> i'm an immigrant and came to san francisco china town when i was 13 years old with my mom and brother. my first job is at the community organizer for public safety with san francisco state. and land in the city hall and became a legislative aid to sophie maxwell. went through city departments when kamala harris was our district attorney i'm proud to represent the richmondad district supervisor. [music] we have great

neighborhood commercial corridors that need to be protected. the reason why we launched the neighborhood business for supporting the [inaudible] for 15 years special more. we have the legacy business program the business around for 30 years or more and thought, you know, we gotta make sure the next generation contains for generations to come. am i'm ruth the owner of hamburger haven we came back on july 11. we were opened in 1968 at that time i believe one of the owners of mestart today went through a guy named andy in the early 70s and my father took it mid 70s. >> originally was just a burger joint. open late nights.

then it changed over the years and became the breakfast staple. we specialize in breakfast, brunch come lunch now. i love this neighborhood. i grew up here. and it feels like home. i walk down the block and recognize people of people say hello. you say hello you talk and joke. has that familiar environment that is enjoyable and i have not experienced anywhere else. there are many things i would like to see improve ams the things we might see are making sure that our tenants stay housed our small business in tact and those are the solutions that will contain to push to make sure that you know our communities can take root, stay and thrive. >> i'm proud of you know,

welcoming folks to the richmond. everyone loch its we got farmer's market every sunday there. the you see really business at the noaa. ice cream at toy folks and going to chop for book like green apple. and that's when you like t is p families love. you will see a lot of great chinese shops that is readily available for everyone. >> and that is just thein are richmond there is more to do in the richmond. what is love is the theatre. >> i mean adam and with my wife jamie, own little company called cinema sf we operate the balboa theatre. the vocabularying theatre on sacramento and soon the 4 star on clement. >> balboa theatre opened in 1926 and servicing this outer

richmond neighborhood since then. and close on the heels the 4 star opens since 1913. >> when you come in to a movie theatre, the rest of the world has to be left behind. but you get e mersed in the world that is film makers made for you. that is a special experience to very much we can all think of the movies that we saw in the big screen of with everybody screaming or laughing or crying. it is a shared human experience that you get when you go in to places that are gatherings and artist presented to you. >> a shared experience is the most precious. and the popcorn. [laughter]. at the balboa especially, we stroif to have movies foreople of every generation from the pop corn palace movies on the

weekend mornings, for families and kids. this is for everybody of all ages. >> what is great about the richmond is it is a neighborhood of the immigrants. belongs to immigrants not ap i immigrants you will see that there are also a huge population of rush wrans and ukrainian immigrants they stay united you am see that the support they lend to each other as a community. and cinderella bakery is another legacy business. if you go on the website it is known as a russian bakery. the first thing you see their pledge to support the ukrainian community. you will see the unity in the richmond i'm so proud of our immigrant community in the rich monthed. >> my dad immigrate friday iran the reason he stayed was because

of the restaurant. has more centamential value it is the reasonable we are in this country. when he had an opportunity to take over the instruct he stayed that is why we are here part of our legacy and san francisco history and like to keep it going for years to come. >> another moment i'm proud to be supporting the richmond and the only asian american woman elect in the office and as an immigrant that is not happen nothing 3 decades. you see it is my ability to represent especially the asian-american community. in my case the chinese speaking elders in our community that really can allow me to communicate with them. i'm program director of adult

day centers. i have been here for 7 years i love to help the communities and help and the people with disabili■uty. i foal a connection with them. i am anim grant i love helping our community and new immigrants and improvements. >> if you want nature, richmond is the neighborhood to go we are between ocean beach heights and golden gate park. >> i love the outer richmond. for me this is the single best neighborhood in san francisco. everybody knows each other. people have been living here forever. it is young and old. the ocean is really near by. and so there is that out doors ocean vibe to it. there are places to seat golden gate bridge it is amazing.

businesses are all small mom and pop businesses. houses get passed down generation to generation. it has a small town feel but you know you are in a big city at the same time. it's got a unique flavor i don't see in other neighborhoods j. it is about being inclusive we are inclusive and welcome the communities, anybody should feel welcome and belong here and shop local, eat local. we believe that with that support and that network it come in full circle. it is passing on kinds knows. that's when richmond is about that we are together at once. welcome to the richmond. >> tenderloin is unique neighborhood where geographically place in downtown san francisco and on every street corner have liquor store in the corner it stores pretty much every single block has a liquor store but there are impoverishes grocery stores i'm the co-coordinated of the healthy corner store collaboration close to 35 hundred residents 4 thousand are children the medium is about $23,000 a year so a low income neighborhood many new immigrants and many people on fixed incomes residents have it travel outside of their neighborhood to assess

fruits and vegetables it can be come senator for seniors and hard to travel get on a bus to get an apple or a pear or like s my my name is ryan the co-coordinate for the tenderloin healthy store he coalition we work in the neighborhood trying to support small businesses and improving access to healthy produce in the tenderloin that is one of the most neighborhoods that didn't have access to a full service grocery store and we california together out of the meeting held in 2012 through the major development center the

survey with the corners stores many stores do have access and some are bad quality and an overwhelming support from community members wanting to utilities the service spas we decided to work with the small businesses as their role within the community and bringing more fresh produce produce cerebrothe neighborhood their compassionate about creating a healthy environment when we get into the work they rise up to leadership. >> the different stores and assessment and trying to get them to understand the value of having healthy foods at a reasonable price you can offer people fruits and vegetables and healthy produce they can't afford it not going to be able to allow it so that's why i want to get

involved and we just make sure that there are alternatives to people can come into a store and not just see cookies and candies and potting chips and that kind of thing hi, i'm cindy the director of the a preif you believe program it is so important about healthy retail in the low income community is how it brings that health and hope to the communities i worked in the tenderloin for 20 years the difference you walk out the door and there is a fresh fruits and vegetables some place you know is safe and welcoming it makes. >> huge difference to the whole environment of the community

what so important about retail environments in those neighborhoods it that sense of dignity and community safe way. >> this is why it is important for the neighborhood we have families that needs healthy have a lot of families that live up here most of them fruits and vegetables so that's good as far been doing good. >> now that i had this this is really great for me, i, go and get fresh fruits and vegetables it is healthy being a diabetic you're not supposed to get carbons but getting extra food a all carbons not eating a lot of vegetables

was bringing up my whether or not pressure once i got on the program everybody o everything i lost weight and my blood pressure came down helped in so many different ways the most important piece to me when we start seeing the business owners engagement and their participation in the program but how proud to speak that is the most moving piece of this program yes economic and social benefits and so forth but the: personal pride business owners talk about in the is interesting and regarding starting to understand how they're part of the larger fabric of the community and this is just not the corner store

they have influence over their community. >> it is an owner of this in the department of interior i see the great impact usually that is like people having especially with a small family think liquor store sells alcohol traditional alcohol but when they see this their vision is changedit is a small grocery store for them so they more options not just beer and wine but healthy options good for the business and good for the community i wish to have more

>> so i'm linda i'm part owner and manager of the paper tree in jeopardy an town. >> paper tree opened by my parent in 1968. so we other second oldest business in jap an town. at 55 years this year. we have beautiful papers from japan, thailand, italy, korea and the biggest selection of orgami. i do it because of my grand father and he wrote to the first english in it in the early 50s. he had an import business to import japanese goods and of course we had our line of paper. to go with the books he produced. it is something i have been doing since i was 5 and i'm happy to say i'm a designer now and of course having paper tree. it is grit.

>> during the pandemic i wanted do something to make a statement to help combat the asian hate that was prevalent at that time. and so i put a call out to have a thousand hearts. this is a spin on the tradition of holding 1,000 cranes when you have a wish. well, a thousand cranes does not make a statement enough why not change it and a call for a thousand hearts? i created a website dedicated to the project. a video and fold heart instructions. people sent them in the first mont was 1,000 hearts. they kept coming in. and the next goal was 7, 698, which was the total number of case of reported hate by the ap i website. those were the reported case of hate. there are more not reported. that became the new goal. we achieved 2 months later.

the hearts were coming in it it is a big project, we have it part of our store. anyone can come and fold an easy heart. keeping that part of the japanese traditlzion of this in that way here in japantown is pretty special. its great. . >> there we go.
