11:30 am
good morning may learn more got got. >> good morning assistant chief was in the morning i did assistant chief wong what a gentleman you are my man oh yes good morning. >> yeah good morning class. take your seats. what do you do?
11:31 am
>> time to okay. all right. good morning, class 285. i'm going to be brief in my comments and i'll turn it over to mayor. i just want to welcome you to the san francisco police department. i know this is a very exciting day. most of you i saw last week during your your one week orientation if you will and again i told you we'd see you this week. so it's it's a pleasure. it's really a pleasure to see you here. this is you are the largest class that we've had. i think since 2017 2018 somewhere around here first full class that we've had since that time and we are extremely excited to see you because we need you in this city now we're all going to give you a little bit of advice in terms of how to get through this academy time for me 30 almost 36 years ago it was the same as it is for you and you're looking at
11:32 am
living proof that you can get through this. it's not going to be easy. most of you are here because this is what you wanted to do all your life for a lot of you some of you are here because you've decided that you want to give back to your city. some of you were here because you wanted to help people but it's all a common theme. keep that in your heart when you're doing push ups. keep that in your heart when you're when you're instructors are trying to drill into you policies and procedures and what's right and how we do business in san francisco, keep that in your heart when you graduate from this academy and you're going through your after your program keep that in your heart your entire career because this job is about serving people. this job is about serving each other. this job is about the same values that you brought here that made you want to sit in these seats this morning is what you need to keep throughout your career. if you do that you will be okay . if you do what's right you will be okay. you're going to learn a lot. you're going to make mistakes. you're going to have some stress throughout your career
11:33 am
including in this academy. but keep that in your heart. so with that i'm going to turn it over to mayor and then you'll hear a little bit from all of us just to give you some encouragement. but thank you for being here. welcome to the san francisco family and military. thank you, chief scott i'm about 16 days into this job so i got a little feeling that you all are going through right now . it's all new. it's all a little wild. but i got to tell you something. i love my job. i love this city and i've been talking for the last year and a half that public safety is the city's number one priority. we are down over 500 police officers. we have to prioritize keeping our citizens safe, making sure that they feel safe and not just our city but feel safe. and that means that you have a incredibly important role to play in the comeback of our
11:34 am
city. so when chief scott told me that this is the largest class we've had in 78 years, that that brings a smile on my face because this community is relying on s.f. pd to do its job, to do it well, to do it with compassion and to take care of community and that's why you all are here. we will have your backs once you get through this and it sounds like it's not going to be easy but i know you can do it. please know that there is a city out there that needs your help and so when you're going through these tough times, remember that you're not doing it for yourself. you're doing it for your community. you're doing it for your family, your friends and you're doing it for the greatest city in the world. you know, there's been a lot of talk i hear talk of all these different police forces in new york city. i remember hearing just a few weeks ago the city attorney
11:35 am
there, the attorney general there said oh, new york has the best police department in the country as a pd we we are the best police department in this country but we need help and we need you. so whatever it is that got you here today, bring that through. chief scott so bring that through with you over these next number of months. we need you. we're counting on you. thank you. thank you for being here. you're not how we can get enough. thanks. i'm here to tell you thank you for putting yourself out there not only for you and your family but for me, for this city, the greatest city in the world. thank you for being willing put yourself out out there. so thank you all. chief. thank you. okay, i'm going to keep those are all right. >> good morning. for those of you that i have not met last week i'm assistant chief david lazar. i oversee operations where so
11:36 am
excited to have you. assistant chief walsh and i were sitting in this class together about 33 years ago so it's been a while for us but we know what it's like to be here on day one. i also know that it was a very challenging morning for you and as the mayor has said, congratulations for making the decision to join the best police department in the country. >> i hope you're all here for one reason and that reason is to help people to help san franciscans, our merchants, our visitors, our residents and everyone that comes and enjoys our city. and we need you for me in operation and i oversee about 80% of the department i oversee all patrol all the investigators special operations in the air force so every day it's city it's the demand of needing more police officers to walk the beaches and to engage in and meet the community. and so we want you to get through this academy. it's challenging. it's nine months. september 11th is your graduation.
11:37 am
and so i just wanted to offer up a couple things to you. i want to say this number one, as challenging as it has been this morning and as it will be moving forward, there were 3008 people that applied for this department and 2023 there was 3165 last year. we're on a trajectory to go even higher. a lot of people want to be seasoned and yet but you got them and you are for those of you with the suits on you got that final friday call that said hey, just show up on monday and we're glad that you're here so now it's your job to keep it and this is a team effort. you have to work together and all of you need to work together to succeed to make it to the very end. there's two things i want to say as i as i as i conclude. one is one is this take it one day at a time. take it one week at a time. i mean i threw the september 11th date out of you. you'll get there one day at a time, one week at a time. stay focused.
11:38 am
this is your life for the next nine months you have to stay focused. the second and final thing is you represent the san francisco police department. that means you're a model citizen. that means that you represent all of us. you wear our patch now you represent our organization. this is this is this is how you need to behave both on duty and off duty as a model citizen. i stay out of trouble off duty . stay out of trouble while you're here, work hard and you'll graduate and you'll you'll be grateful. and this has been a fantastic career. we have no regrets and you'll do great. so congratulations and i'll see you all along the way. good morning, class. i'm acting assistant chief walsh. i want to give you news that probably we don't normally talk about but one of the groups i oversee is background and they're actually so pleased with this class that not only did they get a class that is doing the numbers that we need
11:39 am
but actually candidates that they truly believe in. they believe that every one of you should be here. there was a let's just fill a number there like these candidates are going to make a difference. so what i'm asking is you carry that forward and by doing that you got to remember the team concept. everything you're going to do from this point forward is going to be about the team and teams have healthy competition. you should strive to be the best. you should strive to work harder but at the same time no team. let's other people on the team slow down and fail. so make sure that on your team you're helping those people get through because that's what you're going to do your entire career and you're going to do it with the merchants and the residents. you're always going to look at that group of people and help them because that's why you're all in here. i am really excited about this class. i have high hopes for you. i wish you nothing but success and i know that you're going to make all of us proud and you're going to be really proud to be wearing those patches at the
11:40 am
end of this and just to reiterate with age she was our said i love military history and things like that and some of you may have heard this but remember the only easy day was yesterday and for the academy staff who appreciate this if you're on time you're late so always be ready ready to go move forward and congratulations for your first day here in the academy. thank you all right. >> okay, everybody. so i was academy director about ten years ago, something like that. so i saw some classes through the academy. so i'm going to offer you some advice. so first of all, you have an all star team in the back of the class that's going to lead you through this journey so trust in them. they're going to be hard on you but totally give them 100% of your trust. they're vested in your success . okay? so no matter how hard it is they're trying to push you through. remember to get your rest you and i'll tell you what i taught every class when i was here. work hard. try your best when it's time to rest get your rest so you're at
11:41 am
your best when you're here it's super difficult but the city needs you. there's a lot of work to do so i'm going to thank you in advance for the work you do for this city. it's not going to be easy but it's it's it's for the success of the city and you're an important part of that. so thank you very much for accepting this role and we'll do everything we can to get you through this and i'm sure you know the city acceptance. so thank you very much. okay, class 285 we hope to see every one of you at graduation and we will be checking in from time to time. but those instructors in the back although you might not think so from the day for the next nine months but they love you. they want you here. they want you to succeed and i guarantee you because we all did it you'll come up to them later in your career and you will thank them for what you learned in this academy. so with that, let's get it started class i did right by
11:42 am
brought you work hard but you got a job that you to learn how to do. thank you. i was ready for you to get ready to go. all right. thank you, class. thank you, class
