Sherlock Holmes is the name given to the TV series of Sherlock Holmes adaptations produced by British television company Granada Television between 1984 and 1994, with the first two series bearing the title The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes on screen and being followed by subsequent sub-series bearing the titles of the other short story collections by Arthur Conan Doyle. The series was broadcast on the ITV network in the UK and starred Jeremy Brett as the famous detective. His portrayal remains very popular and is accepted by some as the definitive on-screen version of Sherlock Holmes.
In addition, Holmes's faithful friend and companion Dr. Watson is portrayed as the kind of thoroughly competent sidekick that Holmes would want. Initially, Watson was portrayed by David Burke (who had earlier played the villain in an adaptation of "The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet" for the 1965 BBC series starring Douglas Wilmer and Nigel Stock). Burke appeared in the first year of the Adventures series before leaving to join the Royal Shakespeare Company. He was replaced by Edward Hardwicke, who played Watson for the remainder of the run.

When I think of Sherlock Holmes. I think of Jeremy Brett.
I've seen the movies with Basil Rathbone and enjoyed them completely. The newer takes on Sherlock Holmes have not perked my interest that much;they seem gimmicky or way off to me. But these productions with Mr Brett as the enigmatic Sherlock Holmes always draws me in to the story. These stories will last, they're the best.

Being a great fan of SH during my childhood, I can vouch for this series to be the near perfect adaption of the book. The effort that the production team and the actors had to put to get this one as close to the original book is tremendous. Lucky to have found this uploaded here. Thanks a ton!

Subject: Great Series!
Jeremy Brett was, indeed, a marvelous Sherlock Holmes!
But as to being the ONLY actor to portray Holmes. Well, I don't know. It very much depends on one's mood. doesn't it?
William Gillette was the first actor to play the Great Detective and there is a silent film of his performance in the Archives. Or there was. Speaking of that you can find a (still silent) remake of that starring John Barrymore (Drew Barrymore's grandpappy) A radio version of that with Orson Welles as Holmes can also be found here.
I am 73 and grew up on the Rathbone/Bruce films and they will always hold a special place in my heart. But I have enjoyed Peter Cushing's portrayals as well as that of Sir Christopher Lee as "Old Sherlock Holmes".
The late Sir Roger Moore in SHERLOCK HOLMES IN NEW YORK is not to be missed. He is...effective...but the sly Sherlockian references to Irene Adler's young son (Irene Aler is here played by Charlotte Rampling and...wow. Her son, (whose father MAY have been Holmes and who may or may NOT have grown up to be Nero Wolfe (see William S. Baring-Gould's books on Holms and Wolfe for more on THAT---as well as Thayer David's Nero Wolfe film (based on Rex Stout's novel THE DOORBELL RANG). It, too, references that theory (via Anne Bancroft) and Holmes's portrait is seen where it SHOULD be...in Wolfe's Office.
As Baring-Gould (whose annotated Sherlock Holmes anthology is a MUST read for all lovers of the great detective) Wolfe certainly displays the deductive skills so prominent in the Holmes Brothers while physically and in his dislike of "rushing about to see things for himself he recalls Mycroft as Doyle wrote him,
But enough about that.
Let's just look at THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLLES shall we? Germany gave us a silent film of that (available on iTunes if you can't find it here) Made in 1929 with American silent film star Carlyle Blackwell as Holmes. Ten years later Rathbone and Bruce gave us a sound version (it was their first team up in the roles they played in films and on radio for YEARS to come)
Stewart Granger (a former film idol himself) teamed up with Bernard Fox (|Calling Dr. Bombay! Calling De. Bombay! Emergency! Come right away!") as Watson and some fellow named William Shatner in the tole of Mr., Stapleton---I wonder whatever happened to him? He certainly showed promise.
Peter Cushing and Andre Morrell gave it the Hammertime touch with the aid of Christopher Lee) and Tom Baker (The Fourth Doctor himself) had done one with Terence Rigby as a serviceable Watson and Nicholas Woodson as Sir Henry) And check out Laura Lyons in this one...she is played by Caroline John who played a companion to the Third Doctor on the hit BBC series (Jon Pertwee). The character's name was Liz Shaw.
Matt Frewer gave this story a shot. Benedict Cumberbatch has given us his take on the old story. Carleton Hobbes and Norman Shelley gave us the best (in my opinion) three-part adaptation for radio.
And Jereny Brett has his own version right here,
Arthur Wontner never filmed this story, but he is a fine Holmes with Ian Fleming (no, not THAT one) as his Watson.
Best Sherlock? As Lethbridge-Stewart would later say of a certain Time-Lord...splendid chaps, ALL OF THEM.

thank you for uploading this great series.
sadly Jeremy Brett passed away from heart disease and bipolar manic depression, which he suffered from most of his adult life;
the cardboard box was his last appearance. he had to be hospitalized several times and passed out several times and oxygen and and a nurse on set were needed
Jeremy was so multifaceted, especially in the theatre which he so loved.......you can see alot of his early work on youtube.
He passed away in his sleep on September 12 1995 at the age of 61............May he now rest in peace

We had bought a season of it, which was all we could find at the time. We had to have more! No one could ever be Sherlock again after seeing Jeremy Brett's mastery of the role. He was the best and I loved watching him. I look forward to watching all of these - Thank you so much for making them available!

Subject: The Many Faces of Sherlock Holmes
I've been a fan of Sherlock Holmes for many years in his various guises including Basil Rathbone, Doulas Wilmer, Peter Cushing, Ian Richardson etc. I've also loved the different types of Holmes such as Peter Cook, Michael Caine & Benedict Cumberbatch. I ignored the stupid versions by Jonny Lee Miller and Will Ferrell because they were awful! But, in my honest opinion, the best ever Holmes, and the nearest to the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle interpretation was Jeremy Brett. He was magnificent but was ably supported by David Burke, Edward Hardwicke, Charles Gray, Rosalie Williams and Colin Jeavons.
