fife children and two adults trapped by flames. firefighters rescue them getting them to safety. >> a weekend of violence in new york city with 19 people shot at one scene alone nine people were hit by gunfire. good evening, i'm sandra bookman. >> i'm joe torres. those 19 shootings happened in new york city yesterday and today. three of those people were killed. the shootings last night took place at a party in east new york. a party in memory of a little girl who died. >> now, the other shootings

spread around brooklyn and the bronx. eyewitness news reporter kemberly richardson it is in east new york tonight. kemberly? >> reporter: sandra, one year it was the disney themed, each year plenty of candy. shamia lived on the corner of crescent. this home is now part of an extensive crime scene. she was 12 years old. she had an asthma attack and died three years ago. each year her family holds a memorial celebration. that is what was going on last night when bullets started flying. >> boom, boom being boom. >> reporter: by the time the bullets stopped flying on stanley avenue, six women and three men were hit in the neck, legs and arms. >> as i was walking to the car, you heard shots fired and everybody -- you see everybody scattered. >> the youngest 1, oldest 38. >> >> reporter: he was one of the ones shot.

>> yes. >> did easy the gunman? >> i don't think so. >> reporter: sources tell eyewitness news what started as a memorial celebration in the backyard of this corner home turned into an ugly crime scene stretching several blocks. this bmw smeared with blood, one piece to this violent puzzle. the party, sources say, for say mia gibson, a 12-year-old girl who lived here but died from asthma three years ago. each year family and friends get together to remember shamea. things were going fine until 2:15 this morning when several people tried to get in the party, were told no, pulled out guns and opened fire. >> those that lived here were not [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: across the street the pink houses. police initially searched there for a weapon. they found eight shell casings and one bullet fragment. her family did not want to go on camera but throughout the day folks were seen going in

and out of the home. one thing police are looking at is surveillance video. there are many cameras on homes in the crime scene as well as one run by the nypd. some living here are fed up with the violence. >> kind of scary. scary. i live here. what can i do. >> reporter: a community well aware this is not the last time they will see this. >> young black and latino men are dying with regularity. mass shootings are happening with regularity. it. >> reporter: now, in this particular case at this hour, police have not made any arrests. to recover. for now, live in east new york, eyewitness news. >> thank you, kemberly. new at 6:00, five young children and two adults are safe after being rescued from a burning building in the children were treated with oxygen at the scene in brownsville.

eyewitness news reporter lucy yang is there. lucy? >> reporter: well, sandra, it was a dramatic rescue today. thanks to courageous and well trained firefighters we have a rescue to report on and not a tragedy. it all happened around 1:00 this afternoon here at 6:31 east 96th street in the brownsville section of brooklyn. we are tolby the time firefighters arrived, flames were already roaring out of the windows, trapping a young family on the floor above. rescue crews had two immediate battles on their hands. beat back the flames and rescue lives come first but authorities explain there was a wall of flames blocking their way. amazingly crews were able to save a 2-month-old baby, a 2- year-old toddler, 3-year-old, 7- year-old and 8-year-old plus their mother and another adult. the young family given oxygen at the scene and more importantly, another night to call their observe. the father says he was at a

laundromat when the fire almost took his life. his family's life. >> it was up there. smoke out the window. they said it's hard to breathe. there. everybody grabbed everything to get out. >> the people were -- made sure they were covered and rescued then we put the fire out. they did a great job. >> we couldn't bring him down condition. we had to shelter in place for a while. >> the father tells eyewitness news there were no smoke detectors in the building and that he and his young family are now left homeless. no word yet on what caused this fire. again, no lives lost. live in brooklyn tonight, lucy news. >> lucy, thank you. a sad update on the two men pulled from the water off long island yesterday. one of the men died. police say 23-year-old keyshawn

carlos was under water for nearly an hour before searchers found him. video out of long beach showed first responders treating him at the screeen police say carlos and another man went back in the water after the lifeguards went off duty. >> after hours. we got a call, 911 call. instead of being on the chairs, we were closed. we received the 911 call and responded to the 911 call and got as many victims as we could. >> lifeguards say if you are caught in a rip current, try not to panic. swim to the side out of the current then swim back towards the beach. a bus driver from new york city remains in critical condition following a deadly accident in north carolina. police say the apex coach bus was traveling south on i-95 near the town of benson when it struck a guardrail. the bus crossed into the northbound lanes before crashing into a median. the bus driver, 23-year-old

the bus. another car swerved off the a tree. a passenger in that car was killed. a call tonight for safety changes to stretch limousines following a crash on long island that killed four young women in a limo. days after the deadly accident, eyewitness news investigative team looked into loopholes in stretch limo safety standards. the report found little regulation for changes to the vehicles. now new york senator charles schumer said there should be standards for altering limousines. >> when secondary market manufacturers tear limos apart, stretching them thin, adding tvs, they block emergency exits, weakening the structure of the vehicle little by little for every inch they are streneched -- stretched, they become more and more of a death trap. >> senator schumer wants the federal government to impose

new requirements for converting cars into limos including side impact air bags and reinforced frames. he is the most famous horse in the world. tonight american pharoah's winning streak continues. moments ago, nearly two months after making history at the belmont stakes, american pharoah returned to race in our area and a record setting crowd showed up at monmouth park to watch the triple crown winner race in the haskell invitational. eyewitness news anchor laura behnke joins us with details on his first race since belmont. >> reporter: it took 37 years for the racing world to see another triple crown winner then typically that is the last we see of the horse on the track. he moves into retirement. not american pharoah. it was important to his owners that the world famous horse race again this year. today it happened at the haskell invitational, monmouth park where a record crowd of over 60,000 was there to cheer on the first triple crown

jersey. some scary moments for a coast guard crew on board a helicopter forced to make an emergency landing on staten island. eyewitnesses snapped photos of the chopper that touched down on a golf course in richmond county. the coast guard said the pilot landed because of smoke and fumes in the cockpit. the crew came up from atlantic city to monitor an oil spill caused when a tugboat hit a fuel tanker in bayonne. there will be a meeting in the bronx after a fourth person died due to legionnaires' disease in the borough. five buildings with cooling

towers in the south bronx have gone through thorough cleaning after officials found legionella bacteria there. city council members will take part in a town hall meeting to answer questions about the situation tomorrow. bobbi kristina brown will be laid to rest tomorrow in the same new jersey cemetery where her mother, single whitney houston is buried. the 22-year-old will be buried in a private service at the fairview cemetery in west view. yesterday's memorial service was disrupted when the sister of singer bobby brown became angry and was asked to leave. bobbi kristina died six months after being found unresponsive in a bathtub at her home. verizon workers will work without a contract. a possible strike still looms. more negotiations are scheduled with the wireless carrier. verizon is demanding cuts in jobs, job security and retirement benefits.

verizon said the union's proposals are unrealistic and out of touch in today's marketplace. the contract covers 39,000 employees in nine states. in brooklyn, a memorial honoring the polish resistant assistance to nazi invaders has been restored. it paid contribute to the warsaw uprising and was rededicated today. it was vandalized after it was unveiled in green point last year. donations helped restore the artwork which is the first memorial in the u.s. honoring the fighters resisting nazi occupation in poland. we had a pretty perfect weekend weather-wise. >> the heat and the humidity make a return. how long will they stick around.

there are many reasons to hate to see the weekend end but this weekend it's definitely the weather. >> one uncomfortable day tomorrow. not like last week when it was truly stifling. heat index values will get well temperatures up to 90. by late in the week we could mark. we may be stuck in the 70s by the early part of next week. a live look to central park. the buildings. this is what happens, later in the summer, the sun is lower in the sky at this time of the

evening and there are the shadows. 83. humidity 44%. wind south around 5 miles per hour. the south wind coming in off the cooler waters of the atlantic helping us cool down off the high of 88. newark got up to 90 yet again. that is the sixth day in a row of 90-degree heat. 84 the normal high. 100 the record in 1955. the humidity not bad. sun setting at the humidity will be increasing in a big way tomorrow. it will make it uncomfortable during the afternoon. a slight chance for a heavy thunderstorm tomorrow night. earlier we were more concerned about severe weather. now not as much. just because this front is coming in late at night it won't be able to work with such a hot atmosphere during the afternoon so the storms intense. cooler clouds late in the week. we could be struggling to hit the 80-degree mark. rain is low pressure off to the south. 83 in the city. on long island. 80 in montauk.

82 down the shore at belmar. you head a few miles inland, you are at the 90-degree mark in morristown. 87 the temperature at poughkeepsie. not much to show you on the radar-satellite picture. this is the front we are watching. this will move through tomorrow night around midnight and that's when we stand our best shot at getting a shower or thunderstorm in the area. futurecast, though, indicating something interesting. shows a prefrontal trough developing. a spotty shower or storm, 20% shot of that happening. the line that we are watching comes in tomorrow night. by then, this tends to weaken as it moves through. the strongest chance of getting some maybe stronger gusty winds with eye storms would be well north and west of the city. lows tonight 73 in the park. 60s in the suburbs. highs tomorrow up to 92 in morristown. 90 in central park. 91 poughkeepsie. cooler on the island, 86 islip. if you are heading to the beach, really the big thing you

this is breaking news on a story we brought you at the top of the newscast. the search for two men wanted in connection with a shooting early this morning in east new york brooklyn, that shooting on stanley avenue. nine people were bounded. none of those people were injured. the police obviously would like to catch these two gunmen. the shooting happened outside of a party going on about 2:00 a.m. this morning. again east new york, brooklyn, stanley avenue. nine people were wounded. police want your help finding the two gunmen. take a closer look at that video on our web site, abc7ny. >> very fortunate none of those people were killed. >> yes. changing gears.

new york's nicest kind of year and so is chicago. >> the only team in the american league with a better record than the yankees the last month is the white sox. this weekend none of their games have been close. that trend continuing this afternoon in the rubber game out in chicago. a hot day. ellsbury leading off the game. he needed two pitches to do that. solo home run. the yanks began a hot day. more damage in the 4th. single here. that brings in a pair. yanks get five in the frame and lead 6-0. they weren't close to being done. mark teixeira playing like an all star. that is the 29th home run of the season. solo bomb. 7-0. nova doing more than enough on the mound allowed one run, struck out 7 in six innings. yankees win the game and the series. the toughest stretch of the mets season ends against the first place nationals. despite the recent challenge, new york can come out of this

in a tie at the top of the national league east. the mets look to sweep division rival washington tonight at citi field and move into the tie for first place. after last night's win and amazing perform answer by lucas duda with two homers and rbi double. the last time we saw american pharoah on a racetrack, he won the first triple crown in 30 years. today he made his return on the other side of the hudson river. american pharoah competing for the first time since his feat at the haskell invitational. the first triple crown winner to race there. he made his move on the final turn. after that, nobody was close. american pharoah doing it again. he wins taking the haskell invitational. >> it's very rare that i'm speechless. but i am extremely proud. it's an honor and a privilege. i don't be more happier that this is happening in the great state of new jersey.

afterwards. he doesn't expect it to be a big deal for the defensive lineman who is still seeking a long-term contract. >> before she became the first female head coach of a summer league team and before that team won it all last month, becky hammond was a member of the liberty. she was honored with an induction into the liberty ring of honor. she spent eight seasons in new york leading the team to three wnba appearances. now she is an assistant coach in the spurs. >> i knew that -- when i arrived this city would make or break me. you guys made me. [ applause ] >> there was always a game at the garden. liberty hosting the stars. tina charles finished with game high 29 points. still a one point game at the half. liberty made the move after the break.
