>> the traffic jam is impacting so many people and many have been sending us pictures. you can see a smoke near an overpass on the empty road. we will get you the pictures as soon as we can. as far as people get around -- there is a picture. our coverage continues with heather o'rourke. >> david and shirleen, we have the new jersey turnpike completely closed down, car and truck lanes both directions between exits 12 and 13. your alternates can be routes 1 and 9 or the garden state parkway. we have chopper up above. we will take a look at pictures. this is the new jersey turnpike. you can see where that closure is. what they are trying to do at this point, they are trying to divert all of the cars. you can see what they have done is move the jersey barrier. they are diverting that northbound traffic now on to the southbound lanes of the new jersey turnpike. they are trying to get all of these cars off the new jersey turnpike, get you out of that traffic jam. now, let's go back to the maps.

this is really affecting people who are going to newark airport, going to catch a flight or pick someone up, leave yourself a lot of extra time or head for routes 1 and 9. you can get off the garden state parkway, take 78 east, get on -- into newark airport that way. newark airport flights are not affected. new york air train is running without a problem. new jersey turnpike is something to cross off the list. we will take a look at a camera and show you the delay. we will look at another camera this is a webcam. another camera and show you the delay as you head southbound on the new jersey turnpike. this is right across newark airport. so, here you have the inner roadway which is known as the car lanes. you can see traffic is barely moving. it's at a crawl. to the right of that is where the track lanes are. there is no traffic. they diverted everybody into the car lanes. they are taking everybody down to the area where that fire has

occurred and they are diverting everybody off. this is some place that you definitely want to avoid today in the meantime. david and shirleen, back to you. >> just a nightmare. thank you for that, heather. new jersey reporter toni yates is on the way to the scene. we will check in with her when she gets there. keep sending the pictures to abc7ny. now to the storms that are causing big headaches this afternoon, especially on long island,ing from power outages train suspension. >> thunder and lightning moved through the area in the middle of the night. we have this incredible video in brooklyn. >> this is dix hills in suffolk county. a fallen tree branch dangling on power lines. at this hour, there are more than 35,000 customers without power in suffolk county and nearly 200 in nassau county. >> l.i.r.r. service is suspended. eyewitness news reporter stacey

sager is live in east see take you ket -- sea talk ket with the latest on that. >> what is going on behind me gives you a good idea of what is happening all morning long. the brookhaven highway department is working alongside pse&g to clear the roads from the massive trees and repair the power lines. as you said, about 35,000 customers are without power after this morning's storm. >> they can only hope this massive cleanup here in brookhaven will be just as fast as the early morning storm. that was fast and furious with straight line winds ripping out massive trees which toppled into power lines all across brookhaven's north shore. >> essentially from setauket to wading river. all my crews from the south shore are up here working with the north shore crews.

crews from the middle of the island, we have been able to flood this area. >> reporter: in a couple of cases near rocky point, trees fell directly into homes, but fortunately no one was hurt. here at bob benner's farm a walking tour gives you an idea of all the debris three need to clear up. this snapped near their home. >> it didn't go further. >> luckily it wasn't the whole tree. >> reporter: the worst damage is the greenhouse. the farm is in generator power for now. they heard the storm but couldn't believe the mess that came with it. >> pelting then hit the side of the window so squarely. amazing. kind of neat. i didn't expect what we found when we got up. >> reporter: you heard the highway superintendent explaining the only good news in all of this, he was able to pull crews from the middle island and the south of the town of brookhaven.

he has about 200 people working on this problem now with pse&g. you see the size of the massive trees that came down. they did affect the long island railroad as well. port jefferson line in particular has been suspended in both directions between port jeff and stony brook as they work to clear some of these trees off the tracks. we are live in east setauket, stacey sager, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you for that. a developing story in brooklyn. a huge sinkhole swallowed an intersection in sunset park. now we are learning what may have caused this giant crater. eyewitness news reporter a.j. ross is live near the scene right now. a.j.? >> reporter: shirleen, this sinkhole is indeed huge. i am talking about 20 feet by 20 feet. if you take a look behind me, you can see it's almost the entire width of the street here. this happened earlier this morning. it was caught on camera. outside this commercial and residential building on the corner of 64th and 5th avenue.

as you can see, it will be some time before this area is deemed safe again. take a look at this amazing surveillance video capturing the first moments of what would develop into this massive sinkhole. you can see the asphalt splintering and crumbling as people are taken off guard. a water leak under mind the road causing the concrete above to collapse. no reported injuries but the effects of the huge hole are being felt throughout the community with utilities being cut off near the intersection. traffic is being diverted and the n train, which runs below, is currently operating on a delay. we talked to a nearby building owner about the ongoing massive cleanup. >> it appears to be some sort of water leak that under mind the road, washed away the earth and that's why the street gave way. >> i guess this is part of an aging city and mother nature. >> reporter: now, if you take a look here, these are some of the signs being posted to the

apartments on this corner that have been affected. i am told several families live on the top floors of this building and they have not been allowed to come in to the building as they work to clean up the mess and deem the area safe. we will bring you updates throughout the afternoon. live in sunset park this afternoon, a.j. ross, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> a.j., thank you. we want to turn to the legionnaires' disease outbreak. at least 7 people died. there have been more than 80 reported cases. mayor de blasio just delivered an update. eyewitness news reporter joe torres is live in the newsroom with the details on this. joe? >> reporter: shirleen, moments ago mayor de blasio with an update on the legionnaires' disease in the south bronx at lincoln hospital where several patients are undergoing treatment. this comes after last night's town hall meeting on the disease. the mayor did not attend yesterday's information session but today he announced that an additional five cases reported since yesterday.

the total number is at 86 since july 10th. the mayor reiterated the realities on legionnaires' disease and those who feel symptoms to seek meted yacht care. >> it's not contagious -- seek immediate care. >> it is not contagious. it cannot be passed from person to person. and there is no risk to our drinking water. there is no risk to our water supply from legionnaires' disease. >> now, the mayor also insures the public legionnaires can be treated with antibiotics. now, city inspectors pinpointed five contaminated cooling towers. they have been cleaned. the mayor said he is confident these are the only sites responsible for the outbreak. this story is constantly changing. stay tuned to abc7ny and we will have more updates at 4:00, 5:00 and 6:00. >> thank you. you can find more information about the legionnaires' disease and

weather tomorrow new at noon a not guilty plea from the suspect in the killing of a new jersey college student. this morning he was arraigned on murder and terrorism charges tied to the shooting death of brandon tevlon. he was killed last year as he sat in his car at a traffic light in west orange. testify lon -- tevlon's mother spoke after the appearance. >> it is our belief that brandon was senselessly executed for no reason other than he was an american. this outrageous fact will be proven at trial. >> investigators say brown

admitted to killing tevlon as vengeance for lives lost in afghanistan, iraq, syria and iran. a 12 hour hostage stand off in westchester county. police identified the suspect. police say lester kid refused to let probation officers into an apartment on park avenue in yonkers about 6:20 last night. kid then barricaded himself inside along with his 42-year- old ex-girlfriend. the woman had a restraining order against him. the building's ten nets were evacuated. kid finally surrendered peacefully about 5:00 this morning. new information about a deadly accident at the tappan zee in rockland county. negligent homicide charges have been dismissed against the driver michael sheckle. there is no evidence that he deliberately operated his vehicle in a criminal manner july 23rd. police say he took prescription medication before he drove the wrong way on the bridge and slammed into another car. one person was killed and several others were hurt. the connecticut mother

accused of leaving her child alone in a hot car cannot be alone with her baby, at least for now. that ruling from a judge this morning. investigators say that she left her 4-month-old in her hot s.u.v. while she went to workout at the gym for an hour. then the child was still reportedly left alone for another half hour. if her husband isn't around, she needs some other type of supervision with the child as the case moves forward. it's been nearly a year since the deadly police shooting that set ferguson, missouri on fire. now the former police officer at the center of the case is talking about how life changed for him and his family. >> we are learning new information about a deadly tent collapse at a circus that killed a father and daughter. coming up, survivors share their stories. >> we continue to follow breaking news on the new jersey turnpike. this is live look from newscopter 7. tractor trailer overturned in the southbound lanes.

right now it's 88 degrees around ridgewood and queens. whitestone 85, 87. warm numbers. i thought i would throw the heat index in here for grins to give you an idea of what it feels like. a couple of degrees higher with the humidity. 88 wrightstown. 88 at the shore. part of it is the southwest wind keeps it drier. if it was a southerly wind more moisture. here are the wind gusts from this morning. 51 miles per hour around newark. 41 around laguardia. 30 miles per hour winds and always around the immediate cells themselves, wind gusting around those cells. there isn't a reporting station right here which is where the thunderstorms were in suffolk county. we have a shot of a scattered thunderstorm popping up but we have hot steamy air this afternoon. computer guidance is showing that. thunderstorm at sandy hook, maybe brooklyn, goes queens, up

you wi now a look at jaw dropping moments caught on camera. a run away garbage truck, u- haul explosion but first a dramatic rescue on the tracks. two california sheriff's deputies are glad they were at the right place at the right time to save a man's life. for satisfy reason the man was inside his car as a train barreled toward him in sunny dale. look at this. one deputy dragged him out of the vehicle while the other waved at the train trying to get it to slow down. they got the driver to safety just in time. the man was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. police believe he may have been under the influence of something. a wisconsin sheriff's deputy is driving along then kaboom.

check out the view of this intersection from his dash cam. the back of a moving truck explodes sending the contents into the air and all over the road. the driver had a propane grill inside the truck. it's believed the tank leaked, the grill sparked and you saw what happened. >> let's turn to paymah. a run away -- pennsylvania. a run away garbage truck. the brakes gave out and it slams into two cars. then one worker runs after that. then a second worker. the truck did a lot of damage but no people were in the bath of this runway truck. back to you, shirleen. >> it could be worse. >> it could be happening on columbus avenue. >> a lot worse. >> close call for sure, thank you, david. the nassau coliseum closing its doors for major renovations but not before the piano man plays one last show tonight. he performs for the 32nd time at the coliseum.

we continue to follow breaking news. part of the new jersey turnpike is shut down in linden after a tractor trailer burst into flames. flames. the accident happened in a southbound lane near exit 12. both sides of the turnpike are closed right now. southbound traffic has been diverted off at exit 14. northbound traffic diverted at exit 10. we have no word on the condition of the person inside the tractor trailer. >> we will continue to follow this and update you throughout the show. we have new video coming of the

damage from overnight storms on long island. fallen trees cutting power to homes. homeowners are cleaning up this hour. more than 35,000 customers, mostly in suffolk county are without power. >> meanwhile, a huge sinkhole opened up overnight in sunset park, brooklyn. gas lines are affected. no one was hurt. an underground water main leak caused the sinkhole. >> the number of legionnaires cases in the south bronx a grew to -- grew to 86. seven people have died. mayor de blasio says the of disease is slowing down. hello, again, i'm david novarro. >> i'm shirleen allicot. five people were shot outside of a building in brooklyn. >> the victims in a hospital rage from 19 to 22. it comes hours after brooklyn's borough president introduced ways to try to curb violence in the area. >> since friday, at least 27 people have been shot in new york city. most of them were in brooklyn. eyewitness news reporter darla

miles is in red hook with more on the latest shooting. darla? >> reporter: the nypd just reopened the block a few minutes ago after more than 12 hours of collecting forensic evidence. the shooting in red hook happened in a courtyard behind me. witnesses say the five people shot ran inside for cover. right after that, one of their neighbors, an ordained minister ran to their aid before the ambulances arrived. >> you couldn't get in there because of the way they were laying. the door was cracked. i just said i want to pray over these kids. >> reporter: some of the wounded hobbled home before dawn, all bandaged up and on crutches. among five people gunned down. >> i went to the back window and i heard everybody screaming. i went around there. people told me everybody in there was shot. >> i am glad when my daughter was over here at that moment she was talking to her friends, she left.

even with her leaving, that is sad that these young kids got shot up like that. >> police say an s.u.v. drove by a home on dwight avenue before 11:00 p.m. and opened fire. neighbors say the group of family and friends were standing outside then ran inside the home for cover. the fear of retaliation is real. most witnesses want to conceal their identity. >> the ambulance came and they took them out one by one. >> reporter: the victims range from 19 to 22. three women and two men were struck. the most serious a 19-year-old pregnant woman struck twice in the buttocks,ing once in the torso, left rib and right wrist. >> the pregnant one was. >> in too good shape. then they brought out her boyfriend, the one that got shot three times in the leg. >> now, that 19-year-old pregnant woman lost her baby and is in critical condition at lutheran hospital.

in terms of a motive, the inspected sources are telling eyewitness news that this is retaliation shooting for something that happened earlier in the day yesterday. police are trying to identify suspects. if you have any information on this incident, call crimestoppers, 1-800-577-tips. reporting live in red hook, darla miles, channel 7 eyewitness news. funeral services were held for a teenager shot to death in jersey city. 16-year-old ron witherspoon junior was laid to rest a short time ago. he was hit by a stray bullet near his home in july. police say he was not the intended target. the teen's grief-stricken family donated his organs to six people. three suspects were arrested for the teen's death and they appeared in court yesterday. the families of more than a dozen victims of the school shooting massacre in newtown, connecticut agreed to split the $1.5 million estate of nan say lane say. the settlement comes from a lawsuit filed against the he is

estate of the gunman's mother for failing to secure the assault rifle used in the shooting f. a judge approves the settlement, each family would receive nearly $94,000. police are looking for a man accused of shouting antigay slurs at the first two men to be married at west point. police say they are looking for the man who punched one of the members of the couple in the face. but after that, the punches went the other way. the couple says the attacker left a soho bodega bruised and covered in his own blood. new at noon, governor cuomo says more than $6.2 million in grants have been awarded to 16 historically significant properties damaged during superstorm sandy. the money will aid places like france's tavern where george washington, alexander hamilton frequented and greenwood

cemeteries where prominent new buried. now to the deadly tent collapse at a circus in new hampshire. a father and daughter killed in the community. it looks like severe weather is the factor. it's the second deadly tent collapse during storms this week. stories. here is abc's marci gonzales with the latest. >> reporter: investigators are still out at the scene in part trying to figure out if spectators were given enough warning about that severe weather. we are hearing more from witnesses about those terrifying moments. >> a sir custody tent collapsed. >> reporter: a circus tent ripped apart with nearly 100 people inside. >> i see big metal polls holding up the tent coming out of the ground. >> the violent storm with 60 miles per hour winds and hail roaring through lancaster, new hampshire, yesterday evening,

15 minutes into a performance like this one. >> it was terrifying. you hear the screaming children and the crying. >> reporter: at least 32 spectators injured. a father and his 6-year-old daughter killed. >> it was called in as mass casualty. >> reporter: the storm was part of the same system that spawned several tornadoes in the midwest and caused a deadly tent collapse near chicago. in new hampshire, the national weather service putting out a severe thunderstorm warning 20 minutes before the disaster. >> it's the responsibility of the show to monitor the conditions and we don't know why they were going on at that time and what they knew. >> investigators are also looking into whether the tent was properly constructed. at this point, they say they don't expect to file any charges. shirleen and david? >> just frightening stuff there, thank you, marci. now let's take a look at the weather back home with meteorologist bill evans. >> as we go into the afternoon,

compete against amazon. utica's union train station is finally getting back to normal after a run away railcar caused quite a bit of destruction. surveillance video shows people running for their lives as the railcar crashed into the station and an antique locomotive. the 80-ton engine was stuck there two weeks. it's finally been removed. police say a 13-year-old boy accidentally released the railcar's brake.

one person suffered minor injury. on long island, starting today free wi-fi at robert moses state park. wi-fi is available thanks to a partnership between the state's park department and toyota. toyota is providing the maintenance at no cost to taxpayers. on the money, some good news for fans of delivery. macy's is cranking up competition with amazon. they are bringing same day delivery service to nine new cities bringing the total number to 17. one advantage macy's has over amazon, 900 stores nationwide. the company says the high end bloomingdales chain will expand fast delivery. puerto rico confirmed it has failed to make a 58 million- dollar debt payment in a move that plummeted the country into further financial crisis.

dede many parents are upset over cell phone video that emerged. a sheriff's deputy in kentucky handcuffed a boy at school. >> it's difficult to watch. the child has adhd. now the sheriff and deputy are facing a lawsuit. linsey davis has the story. >> don't swing at me like that. >> an alarming classroom scene caught on video. watch as this kentucky sheriff handcuffs an 8-year-old boy. >> you can do what we have asked you to. >> that hurts. >> this third grader crying out in pain. his hands behind his back handcuffed for 15 minutes because of behavior which his attorney says is related to his adhd. >> now, sit down in the chair like i asked you to.

>> he stands 3 1/2 feet tall, weighed approximately 54 pounds and at no time is he ever a danger to himself or anybody else. >> the video, filmed by a school staff member was released monday by the american civil liberties union, part of a federal lawsuit filed against the sheriff. the aclu and attorneys for the parents alleging he subjected this and another child with disabilities to unnecessary and excessive handcuffing claiming as a result, they experienced pain, fear and emotional trauma and exacerbation of their disabilities. >> handcuffs have no place in schools with little children who are having discipline issues. >> according to the department of education, students with disabilities make up 12% of school students but they make up 75% of all students subjected to physical restraint at school. >> it's your decision to behave this way. >> reporter: now the aclu is

calling for an end to this kind of discipline saying it does more harm than good. >> if you want the handcuffs off you have to behave and ask me nicely. >> linsey davis reporting. using handcuffs as a disciplinary measure is illegal in kentucky and on the federal levels. authorities won't comment until they review the lawsuit. a special arrival at the world trade center path station. >> yeah, early this morning a woman welcomed a healthy baby girl on the concourse with the help of port authority police officers. the woman and her husband and 2- year-old were on the way to the hospital when the woman said the baby is making an arrival. the officers repaired the area for a possible birth. great to see. >> very impatient. she was ready. >> aren't those guys great. i am having a baby. come on over here. very calm. calming force.

a truck fire closed down part of the new jersey turnpike. >> toni yates just made it to the scene. she is there with an update for us. toni? >> reporter: yes, indeed. we are on south wood avenue in linden. i will step out of the way. that is the overpass that was struck by that truck down on the turnpike. we have fire trucks, the electric company pse&g. we have elizabeth town gas. there is an access road for crews by the overpass. that is the way they had access to get to the turnpike. now, that is what they are using to get close to those roads because they need to shut down the utilities because those wires actually run under that overpass. they all have been compromised because of that truck fire on the turnpike. the overpass shut down.

linden police, goes captain james sharnicki explained in detail what the concerns are about the overpass. >> first concern is that there are power lines that run underneath the bridge which may have been compromised as a result of the accident and ensuing fire. so, we have our public service electric and gas on the scene to disconnect the power. >> reporter: pse&g on the scene. the one thing they were concerned about, especially pse&g, there is a fencing over the overpass. they were concerned that it may become electrofied. that's why they shut down the traffic as quickly as possible. we will be out here to get updates to help people get through this. toni yates, channel 7 eyewitness news. back to you. >> we will continue to update that at abc7ny. friends of the band one direction got a great dose of their favorite band thanks to a concert. >> a huge and excited crowd at central park. some waited overnight near the
