video of the crash taken just moments after it happened a morning. meantime, newscopter 7 was overhead getting these pictures of emergency response and the massive hours long tie-ups. state police temporarily shutting down both sides of the turnpike drivers stopped for hours before being diverted off. >> i really don't know where i'm going but we will figure it out. >> route one south is your best bet. >> where do i pick that up? >> that way. >> great. >> reporter: state police say the dump truck driver was trapped in the cab as a truck caught fire after it crashed into the support structure for the southwood avenue overpass. up here local police stopped the flow of traffic over it, truckers who were trying to make warehouse deliveries and pickups. >> and unfortunately this is the only access road for them to get off. so they are pretty much stranded on the other side of the bridge. >> i was trying to get my car out of there so i could at least go home and let the truck sit, but they don't allow me to do that. >> reporter: utility workers began repairing damaged lines that ran under the overpass,

you could see wires dangling across lanes. drivers saw five hour delays. >> we get up from like 10:00 this morning and we just got here. >> reporter: again, state police within the hour confirming the death of that truck driver. at this point they have not released his identity. for now we are live here in linden, new jersey, toni yates, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> toni, thank you. what a mess. another view of all of this from newscopter 7. shannon sohn above it all and it looks like they are beginning to pull that truck out of there. >> reporter: yeah, they are finally making a little bit of progress just about half an hour ago, it was still on its side but we showing you with sky rider 7. look at the damage to the tires there and the front end of this vehicle, burst into flames. we can also show you here exactly how this accident transpired. this is the southbound side of the new jersey turnpike on that outer roadway but you can see the three roadways next to it are all still closed down if you look really closely underneath the overpass you've got the wires down and utility workers on the scene trying to

clear that up for you. that is why only that northbound outer roadway is open and let me tell you, when i say nightmare delays that is exactly what i mean. to give you an idea there is exactly 5.8 miles between interchange 12 and interchange 11 and i can tell you that the delays go back longer than that 5.8 miles, clearly going back towards interchange 10 which is another 2-mile jamup and that's just on the turnpike all your alternates jammed although we are finally see a little butt of relief on the northbound side of 109, but the southbound side, forget about it, it is just as bad. reporting live over the new jersey turnpike shannon sohn, channel channel 7 eyewitness news. >> could be a long right home. thank you. another fire in new jersey, this one tonight leaving a lot of people homeless. the fire at an apartment complex in ocean township, 12 units wiped out and 15 firefighters treated for heat exhaustion. newscopter 7 over the burned- out building and the aftermath. eyewitness news reporter a.j. ross is at the scene with the latest. a.j. >> reporter: bill, this is

still a very active scene here in ocean township. you can see the aftermath of that vicious blaze quickly ripped through 12 apartment units here this afternoon. firefighters have been battling this blaze for nearly five hours and counting and this overwhelming heat today has presented more than a few challenges. take a look at this chopper video shot earlier this afternoon. preliminary reports say the blaze sparked in foliage near the south side of the exterior building, then quickly spread up the walls and throughout inside. two police officers who were the first on scene desperately ran door to door to get families out. they were taken to a nearby hospital and treated for smoke inhalation. one was released a short time ago. today's heat was another huge factor with 15 firefighters being treated for heat exhaustion, the blaze was at one point labeled a six alarm fire because of all the additional units called in to help and 12 apartments total were destroyed displacing several dozen families. >> the whole bushes was on fire

and the window was about to come in. so i got everybody out of the house, called 911, got the other two occupants out of the house, i'll call 911 and i will evacuate this way. and that's what we did. i think we got everybody out safe. >> reporter: and red cross has been on scene as well for several hours helping these displaced families. many are coming home from work right now, and this is what they are seeing for the first time and i spoke with the pio, he calls it the worst fire in ocean township in nearly 30 years. live tonight, i'm a.j. ross, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you. a mother in new jersey tonight facing her son's accused killer in court as he pleads not guilty to murder. alley mohammad brown on charges of murder and terrorism and the shooting death of brendan tevlin. the 19-year-old college student killed last year as he sat in his car at a traffic light in west orange. his mother delivering a bold statement after the emotional court appearance.

>> it is our believe that -- belief that brendan was senselessly executed for no reason other than he was an american and that this outrageous fact will be proven at trial. >> investigators say brown admitted to killing tevlin as vengeance for lives lost in iraq, afghanistan, syria and iran. new york city health officials tonight trying to ease growing concerns about the legionnaire's outbreak in the bronx. mayor de blasio says the disease is slowing even though the number of cases grew overnight. there are now a total of 86 cases of legionnaire's, that's up from 81 yesterday and at least seven people have died. all the cases have been in the south bronx. >> we are going to keep emphasizing to all new yorkers particularly folks who live here in the south bronx, if you have symptoms that might be associated with legionnaire's disease, please seek treatment immediately. >> mayor says the city's aggressively investigating this outbreak. the original source he says has not yet been officially found. to answer your questions and

the legionnaire's outbreak, we now have an entire section dedicated to the story on our website, the link is at our home page at abc ny. maybe it woke you up last night, all the thunderstorms and rain in the middle of night. the storm passed but the damage for many people especially on long island did not. drive cam 7 over several. for scores of thousands of people in suffolk county, their least friday. meteorologist jeff smith in the village of shoreham with the damage for us tonight. >> reporter: and, bill, we are here along miller avenue in shoreham and if you were watching at 4:00, there was a large tree down and wires down right in the middle of the street. the town of brookhaven has been furiously working to clear that away so the pseg crews can come in and restore power to the nearly 25,000 people without power. for this area mother nature gave them a wild wake-up call.

>> it was crazy. it was really -- we had three loud booms and then there was a fourth one that hit overhead and it was just -- that was it. we lost hour right after that. >> mile-per-hour winds moved over suffolk county during the pre dawn hours but it wasn't until daylight that we saw the extent of the damage. >> i didn't know that i had a lot of trees down in front of my yard until i came out at about 8:00 in the morning. >> the corridor from setauket to soreham -- shoreham bore the brunt of the damage with powerlines dangling like spaghetti. >> cleared the roads so trucks and everything could travel and do some work to try and energize people. >> reporter: at 1.40000 people were without power on this sweltering summer day. >> we are worried about the food. we went shopping for the week and got people coming over and, boy, that stuff is going to go bad pretty soon. >> luckily i bought a generator two years ago, finally got to use it. >> reporter: but generators have their limitations. is jury generator enough to

power air-conditioning? >> no, no. >> my refrigerators and a few lights and probably one television. >> reporter: andrew miller is thankful his sister is okay after a tree landed feet from her bedroom. >> her room is on the corner there. i'm glad the tree went into the street and not that way. >> reporter: her car, on the other hand. >> her trunk is definitely flat like a soda can. >> reporter: if anything this was a learning experience for some homeowners as we headed to hurricane season. >> began to assess some of the other trees on my property. >> reporter: and many people asking me today was this caused by a tornado? no it, wasn't. national weather service confirming this was straight line wind damage and from what we have seen out in the field today, we can see that, all of the trees that we have seen falling from a west to east direction and that's the direction that those storms were moving. this woman who owns this home here, thankful that the tree fell in that direction into the street and not onto her home. some people, of course, were not so lucky here on the east end of long island. live in shoreham, i'm meteorologist jeff smith for

channel 7 eyewitness news. >> tree chopping, saws going at it. the storms hitting overnight and then giving way to a beautiful day but with some humidity. will the mugginess go away? lee goldberg here with the details. >> they are on their way out. jeff was talking about the storm track, that's what it looked like on radar especially between 4:00 and 6:00 in the morning. lots of lightning there and 70 to 90-mile-per-hour winds. couple storms still could touch the catskills and the jersey shore, we will explain. meanwhile, it is getting drier, it's still warm and mostly sunny, accuweather is coming up. also coming up on eyewitness news at 6:00 for this tuesday night, another mass shooting in brooklyn. this time five people shot including a pregnant woman. new pictures tonight of the victims and that man, the suspected gunman. and police commissioner bratton speaking out about the recent rash of shootings in the city. and a sinkhole swallowing up a local intersection big enough to open a big family's fleet of cars.

least a block down that street. >> they were standing here, waiting for the chinese people to come and my son heard a shot. >> reporter: it was the first of a barrage of bullets aimed at this red hook home monday night. three women and two men in the crosshairs. >> like this, trying to push everybody into the house and opened the door at the same time and my daughter came to the door and she heard them screaming. she opened the door, they fell into the house and the shooter shot her. >> reporter: these are smith's injured children, 20-year-old devin callahan and 22-year-old deanna smith. released from the hospital early tuesday morning. the callahan's 19-year-old girlfriend is in critical condition after losing their child. >> i was hoping it was going to be a boy. because i had two granddaughters. >> the nypd is looking for 19- year-old marquees frederick, his street name is kiki. investigators believe he is one of two men who jumped out of an suv and opened fire before 11:00 p.m.

and these winds spiked to 70 to 90 miles an hour and we are looking at one tree here but if you listened to jeff smith earlier in the show he was noticing that all of the trees were falling in the same direction from west to east, the path of the storm indicates a woosh of air, a straight line wind, a down draft that comes down from the storm and if they are strong enough they do something like this. >> remarkable storms that peaked over long island with 2- inch hail, big time winds, very heavy rainfall, they were moving just firing across the island. they didn't drop a lot of rain because they were moving so fast but some cases over an inch and now you have this beautiful serene over lower manhattan with the blue sky and low humidity rushing in. pair of threes for humidity. still ah touch of humidity in a few spots in a moment. high today, 89 degrees in new york city, 4/10 of an inch of rain when it poured at 4:30 in the city and the sunset tonight at 8:09. the thunder threat passed for most. august at its best tomorrow, sunny, warm, dry, this late week storm it's trending south, we have a good chance of

missing out on some of the rain from this friday into early saturday. 84 in danbury, 89 hempstead, 83 in west hampton and 80 in east hampton. our northern suburbs coming in in the upper 80s, think the cool front done through monticello, 75 there, newark eight straight days at 90, 89 at wrightstown. the dew points are dropping. where you see dew points from 66 to 74 and at least close to 60, this is where there's still enough humidity in a front nearby that a shower could still flare up but we are getting into the dew points now that go from sticky to pleasant by 11:00. it will be pleasant just about anywhere. this 7:00 thunderstorm could be the jersey shore, otherwise looking at parcel clearing tomorrow night, lots of sunshine and low humidity. most of the storms to our north today, tornado warnings across massachusetts, a couple of storms have been going across sullivan, ulster and dutchess, a few tried to flare up on the island, no dice there. we are watching some storms that are over the mid-atlantic and may just come far enough north that they get into southern ocean county during the evening showers. you can see them right here and our futurecast is actually showing that so we will watch the radar over the next couple
