normal for thousands of families on long island hit by storms. they're told tonight they could be spending days in the dark. good evening. i'm sade baderinwa. >> some of the people could be without power till friday. the towns of smithtown and suffolk county. eyewitness news reporter josh einiger. >> you talk about people getting their power back, folks who live in this neighborhood just want to go down their street and access their homes right now. you can see this is the corner of christian avenue and triangle drive. several trees, maybe a dozen trees are down that have knocked downpour lines making this treacherous and completely impassible. this is another street where several dozen people live in this direction. people just want to be able to get down their street but it looks 24 hours after this storm like it just passed through 10 minutes ago. >> this tree is on another tree that's on a transformer line. >> reporter: the only way for

kim and mark brando to get to and from home is to navigate a dangerous path of twisted branches and hopefully dormant power lines. otherwise they're still waiting for power crews to render it all safe. >> we assumed they'd send a lot of people out because it was so or other storms that we've had. >> reporter: the small water communities dotting brookhaven's north shore looked like they were in the immediate aftermath of a hurricane. after the sun came up, you could see some of the damage from dronecam7. despite the entire day to make a dent -- >> this is devastation. >> reporter: the highway supervisor is beyond frustrated. >> every 20, 30 feet there's another tree like this. they're just fiddle-sticks on top of each other. >> reporter: can't remove the trees until they clear the power lines. >> my crews could be doing more but for the fact that we need the additional resources from the crews from the utility

company to cut the trees off the lines. >> reporter: it said it had, quote, more than 400 to 500 workers performing restoration. all hands were on deck and every resource was in suffolk county. we did see one crew in stony brook but the brandos say they were expecting a cavalry in their community and they haven't seen it yet. >> hopefully pseg can increase their lack of response. >> it's not quite clear how many people have decided to stay in their homes for the night. we've heard the humming of generators in the distance. they're accustomed to power outages but not accustomed to a lack of response, at least as they see it. pseg reports they have restored power to 3/4s of long islanders but about 18,000 customers remain. those are people in this especially hard

hit area who are hoping to get help at least tomorrow. josh einiger, channel 7 eyewitness news. breaking news, a traffic nightmare on the new jersey turnpike. all lanes began reopening a short time ago. nearly 12 hours after a fiery crash in linden that killed one person. cars backed up for miles in both directions all night. the mess all caused when a dump truck struck an overpass, then burst in to flames. the victim is believed to be the truck's driver. looking live from the airport, traffic starting to move again. a turnpike authority spokesman just telling us everything should be cleared for the morning rush. >> a power line was damaged in this crash out of there and that's all burned. people who lived through this mess today hopefully will find the road flowing freely tomorrow morning. >> southbound routes 1 and 9 are closed right now, wilson avenue blocking that route for drivers trying to take a detour.

and another live picture now. you can see the traffic backed up at the top of your screen because of a different truck fire that happened tonight. crews are working right now to repair a giant sinkhole that swallowed a street in brooklyn. a hole formed this morning after a huge water main break in sunset park. the sinkhole is massive, about 20 by 20 by 20 feet. to put that size of this in to perspective, it's big enough to hold three midsize cars with plenty of room to spare. has the deadly legionnaires outbreak peaked? tips on how to avoid the disease. but for some, way too late. 67-year-old carmelo died sunday. tonight his step daughter talking to eyewitness news reporter jim dolan. >> carmelo had emphysema and diabetes. but until last week he could still get around okay.

every day he'd walk up 1 frightening street to catch a bus. so every day he'd walk past the beautiful opera house hotel on 149th street. it's one of several places where cooling towers tested positive for legionella. >> reporter: she was with her husband for 43 years. now she and her family sit in a dark bronx apartment wondering what happened. suddenly on thursday carmelo was too weak to answer the door of his home. >> probably at the door 7 minutes when i told my brother he had to go downstairs and get someone to open the door for us. when they finally came up, he was on the floor. >> reporter: carmelo died from legionnaires disease. he had a number of pre-existing conditions like asthma and diabetes. the ideal host for the disease to rage unchecked, but the family blames the city. >> i feel that they were in a way negligent because the first time that they found out about

it, they could have just started doing something about it before letting it spread all over throughout the bronx. >> this is not the time to let an older member of your family say i don't want to go to the doctor. this is the time we have to really encourage people to seek care. >> reporter: the city says it's made real progress combatting the spread of the disease which they say is spread by a mist which comes from cooling towers like one here at the opera house hotel near where he lived and one here at lincoln hospital. legionella bacteria. >> we have identified the only sites that are causing this outbreak and again, they have all been cleaned. >> we should see, beginning in about a week's time, declining numbers of cases. >> dr. basset believes firmly now that they are ahead of this thing and that the worst is over, this is the worst outbreak the mayor now is going to propose

brooklyn, to team up and work with police to help stop this gun violence. >> reporter: hundreds took part in tonight's national night out event in brownsville, brooklyn. a chance to meet neighbors and the police who serve this community. given the last few days of gun violence in the borough, mayor bill de blasio, police commissioner bill bratton, and district attorney kent thompson talked to the crowd about the rash of recent shootings. >> we all know that last night in red hook, five people got shot. and the other night, nine people got shot in east new york. we cannot have that. we have to come together to end the gun violence here in the great county of change. >> reporter: three women and two men were caught in the crossfire of a gun shootout in red hook monday night. 19-year-old houston is in critical condition. she was four months pregnant and lost that baby. the expectant father, 21-year-old devon callahan and his sister deanna smith were also hit outside their home.

>> they were standing, waiting for the chinese food to come. >> reporter: destiny jones and another man were also hurt in this shooting. investigators release this photo of a suspect. his name is marquis frederick. he also goes by kiki. police say two men jumped out of a silver suv and started firing. it was part of a retalatory shooting between two public housing complexes, but investigators say the men had the wrong block. >> we're shocked. we don't even know how to handle this. this is new to us. we're used to being able to sit in front of your home. when people come around shooting, and children, people who have nothing to do with anything inside of the neighborhood, it's really sad. >> some of the people who live in that neighborhood fear leaving their homes because they're not sure if this feud is over. reporting live, i'm carolina leid, channel 7 eyewitness news. we have new video just in to eyewitness news giving us a good look tonight at a suspect wanted for a string of burglaries in manhattan. cops

say the man has broken in to at least six apartments in midtown since february. during the latest burglary a few weeks ago, the man caught on surveillance at a fire escape. for the first time we're hearing the 911 calls made after a new jersey state trooper opened fire on three teenagers outside his home. >> he's in the middle of the street. i swerved because i didn't want to hit him and he shot my car three times. >> the shooting happened in sparta last month after the teens mistakenly knocked on the trooper's door. the teens ran when the trooper came out with a gun. the trooper fired three shots as the teens drove away and a 911 call, the trooper's wife claims the driver tried to run her husband down. >> he was banging on our front and backdoor, my husband is a state trooper. i woke him up and he got went outside, fired three shots. the car almost hit him. he's in his car pursuing them. >> the teenaged driver claims he swerved to avoid the trooper who was standing in the street. no one was hurt in the shooting

by another man who stole it during a street fight in the town of hemet, just outside of palm springs. the man survived despite bouncing off the hood at 30 miles per hour then flipping in to the air. suffered several broken bones. police still looking for the two men who attacked him. the family of a woman found dead in a jail cell has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the trooper who arrested that woman, sandra bland, and other authorities her family blamed for her death. the autopsy found the 28-year-old woman committed suicide, hanging herself in her jail cell last month after she was arrested for a traffic stop, but her family disputes that finding. an alert from the nypd tonight about a highly dangerous synthetic drug known as k2 that's growing in popularity on the streets of new york. the police department releasing graphic video of the drug's effects on a man in brooklyn who stripped naked and went berserk on the street. k2 is synthetic marijuana that causes extreme reactions. many users hallucinate and become

impervious to pain. >> it's synthetic and it's incredibly dangerous and harmful. again right now a lot of bodegas particularly in east town and elsewhere tend to keep it under the counter so some of the undercover work we're doing is attempting to to deal with those places. >> another reaction from k2 is extreme strength. police say the drug is putting officers in danger as well as users. more than 10,000 packages have been seized in the city recently. happening tonight, billy joel performing the final show at the nassau coliseum in long island before it closes for a major renovation. that was new york governor cuomo introducing him. set to undergo a

that's four out of the last five days, 89 degrees with your high. no rainfall at least over the last few hours. had .4 of an inch in new york city. other parts of the area saw an inch like northern new jersey and north shore of long island. these are all the storm reports whether it's wind or 2-inch hail. trees knocked down all across the north shore. this afternoon these are all the storm reports. storms bypass us to the north. even tornado warnings over parts of new england. we're more fortunate this afternoon. but there are still a few thunderstorms over southern ocean county for the next few hours. august at its best tomorrow. partly to mostly this late week storm, still more evidence tonight that the bulk of that is going to stay to our south. there are the highs today. very warm, upper 80s and lower 90s. right now we're at 73, kingston. 63 in monticello ready to dip in to the 50s. 77 at norwalk. 78 in nor -- in yonkers. 73 at 7:00

in the morning. patchy clouds at times tomorrow. nice breeze out of humidity stays low and highs in the mid and upper 80s. still higher dew point air, more humidity and it's just on the southern fringes of our area. that's why some of these thunderstorms have reached up in to ocean county. couple more hours of that. these storms off to the north should stay there. we're just mainly clear overnight. high pressure is going to build in over the next one to two days and then we're going to watch this broad area of low pressure track to our south. we'll be on the northern fringe of it. watch the futurecast here. few clouds tomorrow morning. there are those storms moving offshore later tonight. not perfectly sunny but sunny to partly cloudy. will turn mostly sunny. less humid. as we go through the day on thursday we start to see some of the impact of the storm to the south. a nice drive during the daylight hours. high clouds during the day. high of about 81. then here's a long-term futurecast as we watch this storm.

yanks were just warming up. bottom of the 7th inning took over a half hour to play. tracy morgan loved it. chris young hit a three-run home run as well. nine runs in the 7th inning, 13-3 win, fourth time in seven games. they've scored in double digits and we get to see severino finally tomorrow. a game in miami tonight, looking for a fifth straight win. the mets have been rolling right along. they tie the score in the 6th inning. ruben tejada, base hit. look at jon jon niese, he's in there mets win it. five in a row. every starter had at least one base hit. mets go for the series sweep tomorrow. washington today also won, so the division lead, still one game. nfl training camps roll on this week.

the giants had the day off from on-field practice. jets were back at work. muhammad wilkerson was off today on a bike. geno smith working with the first team, although ryan fitzpatrick gets in there but smith has been doing well in this new system and he plans to stay there. >> when you study and stay on top of things and you just know the offense, it helps you out. so it's something i'm still getting better with. i've still got to continue to grow with that. we're getting better and better every single day. >> for the most part he's been good. it's been three days. ray rice not in camp with any nfl team. he remains unsigned after his domestic violence problems played out in front of the world but the new rochelle native says he hopes a team takes a chance. he says he's a rehabilitated man. he said he understands why teams may be reluctant to bring them onboard. he wants the chance to, as he says, rewrite the script. >> over time i want to be able to rewrite the script to tell my daughter that daddy made the
