th good morning, america. breaking overnight, fight night. the republican presidential candidates finally face off. donald trump center stage taking off the gloves and taking aim at his gop rivals. >> you're having a hard time tonight. >> hillary clinton. >> i said be at my wedding and she came to >> defending past comments about women. >> i don't, frankly, have time for total political correctness. >> sparks fly. >> i don't trust president obama with our records. i know you gave him a big hug and if you want to give him a big hug again, go right ahead. >> as the contenders try to break out of a crowded pack. >> thank you, meghan. i wasn't sure i was going to get to talk again. >> our team breaks it all down and donald trump here live only on "gma." also breaking, walmart walloped. five reported tornadoes touching down last night. at least five injured in this store.
7:01 am
the roof collapsing, semis flipping, homes destroyed and more severe storms on the way. stanley cup stunner. the superstar athlete under investigation reportedly accused of sexual assault. what his team is saying about it this morning. >> and showstopper. jon stewart signing off from "the daily show." >> that is our program. >> saying good-bye to america's favorite fake newsman, the all-star send-off and surprise salute. and good morning, america. happy friday. boy, what a rollicking kickoff to the campaign, the first gop debate last night and love him or hate him, donald trump dominated. he was the most searched on google, the most talked about on facebook, the most mentioned on twitter. >> making it a very exciting start to the political season but trump not the only candidate who had a big night. ten on that stage, many standing out. tackling important issues and
7:02 am
take a look at this moment from before they took the stage, that's all ten of them in an elevator together, say it with me, awkward. >> yeah, not easy to make small talk right there. and there was a lot of talk on the stage as well and a lot of ground to cover. donald trump will join us live in a moment. first abc's tom llamas starts us off from cleveland. good morning, tom. >> reporter: good morning to you. trump's past, record and wedding came up during last night's debate but this morning republicans want to know one thing, are you with us or are you with yourself? >> businessman donald trump. >> reporter: right from the start donald trump not letting go of the spotlight kicking off his first presidential debate with a controversial move. when asked whether there might be an independent run. >> mr. trump. so -- >> reporter: fueling the fire his path to the white house may not include the republican party refusing to pledge not to run as
7:03 am
an independent. >> you're not going to make the pledge tonight. >> i will not make the pledge at this time. >> okay. >> reporter: trump then called out for offensive tweets and statements about women. >> you call women you don't like fat pigs, dogs, slobs and disgusting animals. your twitter account -- >> only rosie o'donnell. >> no, it wasn't. for the record, it was well beyond rosie o'donnell. >> yes, i'm sure it was. >> how will you answer the charge from hillary clinton who is likely to be the democratic nominee that you are part of the war on women? >> i think the big problem this country has is being politically correct. what i say is what i say and honestly, meghan, if you don't like it, i'm sorry. i've bishop very nice to you although i probably could not be based on how you've treated me. >> reporter: blasted for donating to democrats. >> because he's used to buying politicians. >> well, i've given him plenty of money.
7:04 am
>> reporter: inviting hillary clinton to his wedding seen in this photo from 2005. >> i said be at my wedding and she came to my wedding. you know why, she had no choice because i gave -- i gave to a foundation that, frankly that foundation is supposed to do good. i didn't know her money would be used on private jets going all over the world. it was. >> reporter: post-debate he claimed he was picked on. question. else. >> reporter: senator rubio putting a focus on a real republican threat. >> if this election is a resume competition hillary clinton will be the next president. >> reporter: while those at the top of the polls, jeb bush had trouble breaking through. facebook and google showing them searching the most for donald trump and dr. ben carson. >> i'm the only one to separate siamese twins. the only one to operate on babies while still in their pore's womb and take out half of a brain although you would think
7:05 am
if you go to washington, you would think someone beat me to it. >> reporter: a debate over the nsa's collection of phone records turned nasty fast. >> i don't trust president obama with our records. i know you gave him a big hug. if you wants to give him another big hug go right ahead. >> the hugs i remember are the hugs to the families who lost people on september 11th. those had nothing to do -- those had nothing to do with politics. >> reporter: a very powerful moment last night. now, there was an earlier debate with the other seven republicans running for president and one person did stand out, former hewlett-packard ceo carly fiorina, the only woman in the field. newt gingrich tweeted she earned a spot to be with the top ten. the next debate in five weeks. we'll see who is on stage. >> thanks very much. right to the man of the moment, donald trump joins us by phone. mr. trump, thank you for joining us this morning.
7:06 am
i'm looking at the "the new york times." it says trump steals the show. you tweeted megyn kelly and her fellow moderators were not professional. are you worried they drew blood. >> number one, i had a great time. it probably got record ratings. i wonder what they would have been if i wasn't in the mix. interesting to see, frankly. i had a great time. some of the candidates i got to know. i never met. i didn't know and they were really great people. i really had a wonderful evening but the questions asked of me were much, much more difficult and poignant and really unfair than other people were asked buts that weigh okay. i guess that's part of the game when you're number one in the poll, i guess that's what happens. >> the others got tough questions, as well. republicans seem most bothered by your lack of a pledge to the party. what i want to know if you are not the nominee what would the republican party, what would the nominee have to do to convince you not to run as an independent? >> well, if i respect the
7:07 am
nominee, which is very important to me, again, i'm not really a politician, i mean, i'm running the opposite because -- >> you are a politician now, respect you? >> well, i don't view myself as a politician to be honest with you, george. i think i'm somebody that's going to try to straighten out this country and make america great again. that's what i'm looking to do but i want to run as a republican. i want to win as a republican. that's the best chance of winning. but depending on what happens, we will see and, you know, i've been treated very nicely but if i'm treated with respect which i should be, and if i like the person running i'm not running as an independent, i want to run as a republican. i think everyone knows that. i think the rnc knows that and that's what i'm looking to do and that's certainly the best chance of winning. >> did you see anyone else up there on the stage last night who you could support? >> oh, absolutely. i don't want to mention names now but there were numerous people. i have a lot of respect for a lot of the people up on the stage. >> anyone not impress you. >> i don't want to get into that
7:08 am
either but i must tell you i really got to know some of the people last night. that was a pretty heated deal. i guess they said it would be record stuff, record type of ratings and it was a very heated evening and you sort of are in the trenches with people and, george, it was -- it was a fascinating night and i really candidates. >> it was a fascinating night for all. you did get pressed hard on a lot of things including your past positions, you used to say you were pro-choice. now you say you're pro-life. did you learn anything from those questions? do you think you'll have to change anything as we head into the next debate. >> i evolved. i mean ronald reagan was a democrat. he became a republican. he was sort of a liberal democrat actually and, you know, you evolve and things happen and i'm pro-life and other things that we talk about. i actually discussed single payer and why it no longer would work and could have worked years ago but it won't work now and we talked about that and i think i gave full answers on that. we discussed all things, but,
7:09 am
you know, you grow and you evolve and that's what happens with me and that's what happens with most people on that stage. >> you know, before we go what was unfair about megyn kelly's questions? >> well, i think, number one, i'm not sure and i'm checking this out. you know, some of the statements she made about the women i don't recognize those words whatsoever. i mean we're going to look at that very carefully but i don't recognize those words. >> you take them back in you did say them. >> she came up with words i didn't recognize so we'll see what happens. we'll take a serious look at it but when i said the rosie o'donnell thing that got the biggest -- i would say the biggest laugh, applause, et cetera, of the evening. i mean that was a pretty startling noise in that arena, so, look, it was an amazing evening. i'm not complaining about anything. i think that -- i think i did very well. you know drudge had me as number one and "time" magazine had me as number one and "the new york times" has she as number one. >> "time" magazine says they're
7:10 am
still compiling results but -- >> i think i'm way ahead, george, in all fairness. >> i guess. >> pretty hard when you have a 40 some odd percent of the vote. pretty hard to beat. >> that may be. will you be the front-runner going to the next debate? >> i would think so. some people, most people the real pro said that based on the performance last night my numbers should even go up. i'm at 26%. we just had in south carolina mid-30s, in north carolina, mid-30s and nevada we're doing great and won the hispanic vote in nevada, which is very interesting and i say i'm going to win the hispanic vote. i won the hispanic vote. we had incredible numbers in georgia, in the mid-30s. >> we will be -- >> we are doing pretty well. >> we will be watching. thanks. you heard donald trump say he thinks he's going to go up after the debate. >> he think he wins just about everything he does. i think he dominated the debate but i think his momentum has stalled.
7:11 am
to me it reminds me of buying a house, find the house which you've never seen before and then you call the inspectors in and start to say, wait a second. there's cracks here and you may have foundation problems. that's what happened. people are going to pause for a second. his momentum has slowed. 'definitely not going up after last night and the biggest mistake he didn't show up and take it to a presidential gravitas level. he stayed at his same sort of mannerism shtick he's come into the debate with. >> he decided to play the game that brought him there in the first place. there were some strong performances last night. i was struck by marco rubio and john kasich. >> i thought of the winners, three winners, first marco rubio. i thought he was the most inspirational in the course of the evening, young new generation. i thought john kasich was the most dependable. somebody you could see as president and carly fiorina in the earlier debate, my expectations because she was the most logical is going to jump up into the next debate and be on the main stage in the next debate so one of those ten will fall. >> anyone not meet the mark. >> i thought jeb who needed to get restarted on his momentum didn't show up.
7:12 am
he was probably the biggest loser of the night. not any specific mistake but just no energy there at all and i think he needs it. he's going to need every dollar of his $100 million to try to get back in the race because he didn't do well last night. >> matt dowd, see you sunday on "this week." hillary clinton said she couldn't watch the debate. was holding a fund-raiser in california. look at this, kim kardashian tweeted out a picture of her and kanye west last night. she, of course, is the democratic front-runner. drew fire and we'll talk about it all sunday on "this week." >> we will be watching. thank you, george. moving now though to a major breach at the pentagon. hackers breaking foo an ee ging into an e-mail system possibly coming from russia or china. abc's martha raddatz is in washington with the latest. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, lara. the u.s. is pointing the finger at china or russia. the leading suspect, russia and they're not just talking about a couple of russian hackers, they mean state sponsored hacking with the blessing of russia's
7:13 am
secretive and aggressive president vladimir putin. think about it, the pentagon is one of the most secure facilities in the world and yet hackers were able to penetrate that system. the good news is this was the unclassified e-mail system but you're still talking about at least 2500 people on what's called the joint staff, war planners, decisionmakers, people who the russians would love to know more about. and while this attack was sophisticated, it was also dangerously simple. it was a phishing attack meaning they dummied up an e-mail or login that looked so real that a member of the joint staff could have been fooled by it, lara. >> so real looking. so what are we doing about this problem? >> reporter: well, the pentagon mostly plays defense and head of cybercommand is urging the administration to get more aggressive saying we are at a tipping point, lara. >> martha raddatz in washington, thank you very much. turning now to that severe weather overnight, storms from california to the midwest. that walmart we showed you

8:13 am
would have drawn a ton of attention and photographers camped out for days. it's a balancing act and had to find the sweet spot which clearly they did. >> we heard jen say, don't worry, friends, i will let you know. but -- >> not so much. no. no. you know, she seemed to pull it off a little bit because from what we can see of people arriving, nobody was in cutoffs and t-shirts. >> they all knew, come on. >> people were dressing up and there was -- there was a lot of sort of smoke and mirrors because it was justin's birthday so she has celebrated that this time roughly every year. i know because this time roughly every year we have watched that birthday party to see if it would turn into a wedding so i think shy probably let people be as suspicious as they needed or wanted to be this time around and it paid off if you wore your nice clothes to the birthday barbecue. >> people arrived and didn't leave. reports are that courteney cox, her maid of honor stayed till
8:14 am
3:00 a.m. >> she was one of the last guests to leave. >> you go, girl. >> apparently i think sol of her friends were not sure if it includes courteney cox headed off to bora bora with them. >> that's what we know about the honeymoon is bora bora. >> and i don't believe it's going to be just the happy couple the entire time. i think the party will continue down there. >> i like friends like that. >> sounds great. we're so happy for them. congratulations, even though you can't hear us because you're in bora bora, thank you, kate bora bora, thank you, kate coyne. also burning up the "heat index" this morning, we'll talk about disciplining your child. it is a polarizing topic for parents. everybody has their feelings on what they think is the right thing to do. now a study is shedding light on what really works. abc's reena ninan has more. >> reporter: tantrums and toddlers of we have seen them everywhere in films like "daddy day care." and even in the white house. but when it comes to how to
8:15 am
handle them, most parents are divided. some choosing to love their toddlers through it. >> parents can really use it as a teachable moment to show their kids how to problem solve and to teach them how to express themselves. >> reporter: and others choosing to ignore the fit and enforce a time-out. >> when a child is really being defiant, they're hitting, they're overwhelmed with emotion, that child is best suited for a time-out. >> reporter: but before parental battle lines are drawn a new study says both sides are actually right. researchers from oklahoma tate university interviewed 102 moms who provided details descriptions of five times they had to discipline their kids for hitting, whining or defiance and found out toddlers needed reasoning. when it comes to this woman's little ones she prefers the nurturing approach especially for her 4-year-old son. >> i try to calm him down, get him, you know, whether to use his words or get control over
8:16 am
his emotions and then from there decide what my next step is. >> reporter: for "good morning america," reena ninan, abc news, new york. >> all right, joining us now are parenting expert ericka souter and dr. richard besser. ericka, what do you think about this? >> the first thing to remember from the study there is no one size fits all way to discipline your kid. every kid is different. it's about knowing your kid. the second great thing is that we're now hearing time-outs can be a good thing and we should realize when it's appropriate. the study had lots of interesting information. that small demographic of moms felt -- many felt negotiating with your kid, talking them through their tantrum or the upset period was a good idea but interestingly enough in the long term that method may not be so helpful. >> when they're teenagers and talk back, i know. >> definitely doesn't work. so you're a pediatrician, how does this stack up with what you recommend? >> it's in line. there is no one way to did this. there is a whole variety of
8:17 am
tools so in addition -- there's times when you want to negotiate and compromise but there are other things you should know about. the first one is called natural consequences. so you have a little child there. you go i have them a cookie, they throw it on the floor. you don't keep replacing it. logical consequence, they have a toy. they break it. you don't keep replacing it. they learn you break your toy and it's gone. there's withholding privileges which tends to work as kids get older and things they want to do. >> that's effective. >> no phone. >> exactly. >> and then time-outs. time-outs can be really effective but so many parents talk to me about how hard they are and challenging to get going. >> yeah, the time-outs thing, i did that a lot but when you have a child that's kicking and screaming like a full-blown tantrum it's hard to get them to stay. >> if you threaten the time-out you have to follow through on this. you have to keep going and the next thing you want to do is you want to make sure you do it immediately. don't wait a half hour or until they calm down. get down to their level and you explain, this is why you're in a time-out.
8:18 am
this is what you've done. >> you add time if -- that's what i always did, the longer you do it, the longer you're going to be there. >> in the middle of it, it's hard to do it. >> it is. >> so best advice as you said there is no one right -- one fit for all. so what would you say to parents who are like, i'm still not sure which way to go. >> learn the tools. trust your instincts. make sure both parents are on the same page. >> good call. >> and lastly recognize when you as a parent also need a time-out. >> walk away. >> i do. >> times you have to walk away. >> can you take a nap. >> yes. >> usually involves wine. all right, hey, we want to thank both of you and let you know we asked do you give your children time-outs? 74% of you said you did. 26% said no. the other question will be whether they work. >> that's next week. our super shopping secrets turning your trash to treasure.

so many people are decluttering now using the popular marie con doe condo method. paula faris explains how you can do it too. >> she is the woman behind the highly buzzed about declutter movement gaining steam worldwide. marie kondo's mike "the life-changing magic of tidying up" has sold 3 million copyies securing a place on "the new york times" best-selling list for 39 weeks. >> it's a one time life event examining things on the principle of joy. does it bring joy, if not, goes out. >> reporter: where are those un unwanted items going. the konmari method is inspiring people to turn their clutter into cash. >> i made over $6,000. >> reporter: it's added to her wallet but also lightened her life. >> i think the most important part of the konmari meth hod is
8:20 am

high-end designers sell the. >> he is >> this is marc jacobs. was 895. now 290. as even that can attest, no losers in this situation. >> no, not at all. >> wow, everybody wins. >> yes. >> that's a situation we like. >> paula is back with great simple tips for us. first explain to us because i do love shopping at consignment shops. they won't take everything. >> they won't take everything. of course, three real parameters there, the style, you know, the timelessness, the brand, the bigger brands and higher end are going to go quicker and the quality of the fabric and we have a couple here that are hanging up. i want to show you a stella mccartney dress retails for 1250 in the store selling it for 265. if you have this dress and looking to cash in you'll make about 40% to 70% of what they're going to sell it for. not all consignment shops will give you the money up front. they'll wait until that particular item sells. >> if you bring in a few things they'll wait to see how much they sell. you might get a check --
8:22 am
>> you've done this a couple of times. >> keep track of what you give them. it could take a while. usually it's about 50% of what they sell it for. >> 40% to 70% and had that zach pose posen dress. you can make $74 consignment on that and i want to show you this at the very end, this escada jacket has the brand but it just doesn't have the style and timelessness so that one is not going to go. >> she said no go. >> no go but if you want this with the tags on. >> you should buy this. >> tags on it. retails for $830 and it was at the consignment shop. >> for 165 but we might give it to you for 100. >> i think you should splurge. i think you should splurge. >> try to take it off me. >> you know what, before we do that we'll go to ginger out in the park. >> oh, lara, i am just here ready to party with a few thousand of my friends who love
