scene out here. police still trying to figure out and piece together all the different stories they're thorg figure out exactly what happened. they know a vehicle, a black car, pulled up right here about where the police van is standing. the driver got out, may have been wearing black bandana or a mask. and he walked right up to three young men standing in front of that building right there on saratoga avenue, and he fired several shots. there are five shellicates in front of the building -- casings in front of the building. police trying to figure out the motive and who was being targeted. what we know is that a 21-year- old man was shot shotin the chest -- shot in the chest. he was killed. an 18-year-old and 20-year-old were hurt in the arms with bullets. they were taken to brookdale hospital and will recover. this happened on saratoga aeven. and -- avenue. and there were a lot of people

on the street when it happened tonight. >> the three fellows was just sitting in front of the building. i said hey, what's up, y'all? while in the supermarket, the gunshots just rang off. >> reporter: a lot of people were on the street when this happened. police are getting conflicting story. that is a police camera there. they're going to get a real good view of exactly what happened and who was responsible. right now they're looking for a black mitsubishi with no license plate in front. still trying to piece together exactly what happened. one man dead, 24ths injured here -- two others injured here. >> we'll have the latest tomorrow morning at 4:30. new details in a frightening school bus crash in new jersey. the bus slamming into a building, kids on board, some were hurt. and the family of one of the students is talking to us

about what happened. >> reporter: this is one of two hospitals where a bus load of special needs kids wound up scared and alone after that terrifying ride to school this morning. and new tonight, we've learned disturbing details about the bus company at the center of the crash. 14-year-old bill won't tell you he's feeling any pain. but with that giant knot on his forehead and the cuts on his elbow and leg, he has to be pretty soar. if you lived through this, you would be too. >> i'm just talking about my son, their lives, and that's what i'm thankful for. >> not feeling so good of >> reporter: breathing a sigh of relief after a school bus loaded with nine autistic teen this is morning careened through this irvinth intersection, slamming into the wall of a liquor store. 12 people, including all nine kids, both drivers wound up in the hospital.

>> some of them have head injuries, elbow, legs, they can't walk. >> i don't know what to say. >> reporter: now the question, what went wrong? eyewitness news obtained this mroerlt which said the bus -- police report which said the bus driver said she tried desperately to slow down but the brakes failed. >> she was scared saying her brakes went off; her brakes went off. >> reporter: the bus company has a history of equipment failures. records show in the past, nearly every single bus in its fleet has failed its inspections, forced out of service to repair defects involving taillights, emergency doors and brakes. >> i think we have to hold them sposhl for what happened -- responsible for what happened. these buses are supposed to be well-maintained buses for these kids were >> reporter: we placed several calls tonight to horizon link, the bus company involved. they did not return any of our calls tonight. in the meantime, police have impounded the bus in question.

tomorrow they'll be searching for mechanical defects. the problem with the brakes f. they find one, they'll have to figure out who's to blame. a strange and creepy picture at a medical center in brooklyn. detectives say two women and a man walked into a patient's room and asked a new mother if they could take pictures with their baby. the mother refused and they left. they were seen leaving in a white van. one city worker and fwof his buddies in -- two of his buddies in trouble with the law. they spent hours scavenging the sewers. a prank before 911. now a major breech of security system. and the response from cops is definitely part of the story.

>> reporter: these workers helped two friends get into the sewer system. expected to be arraigned in downtown brooklyn at any moment. because of this, going into something like this, a manhole, they descended, and officials are calling his actions incredibly irresponsible of >> reporter: a search for buried treasure in brooklyn. three scavengers popped open a manhole and went searching for treasure below. a neighbor called police after seeing the men close up the manhole behind them to start their journey here at east 35th and avenue h in east flatbush. >> i really thought it was something serious. i even said to my daughter, are we going to blowup? you know, it was really a lot here. >> reporter: a part-time city dep worker and two buddies are in hot water for wednesday night's underground adventure. all charged with criminal trespassing.

>> reporter: no one answered the door at their home in fort green. >> who knows what they're looking for? these three were evidently up to something down there. they were down there for four hours of >> reporter: eventually the men surfaced after cops and firefighters spent hours looking for them in the sewer tunnels. neighbors are grossed out just talking about it. >> why would you ever do that? it's too dirty down there. >> too many vermin. there might be even some homeless vagabond type of people don't there. i don't have no clue! but there's no light, and it stench, and the filth. >> you couldn't pay me enough money to go down there! another man's treasure, i suppose. we don't know if these men apparently went down there searching for treasure. a man risked his own life to save his dog from a burn caring in new jersey. police gave us this video of the flaming buick tonight. the man in a store in south brunswick, another shopper told him the car was on fire. the driver ran out to the parking lot to rescue his pug. the flames so intense, nearby stores were evacuated. the fire department eventually put the fire out. the only casualty, the 20-year- old car. new video of the massive explosions in china that killed 50 and injured hundreds. storing toxic chemicals. legislation passed in new york city today set standards about testing and inspections for the law is in response to the deadly outbreak in the south bronx that left 12 people dead. >> we have an outbreak. this has become an emergency situation. so we defined structures that, one, is going to really ensure compliance on a serious matter. >> the cooling tower is blamed for the bronx outbreak. a report says most legionnaires deaths come from hospital beds and showers. the death row prisons of connecticut about to be empty. the state supreme court said the death penalty banned for killers in history.

>> reporter: brutal, violent, senseless. the wife of two daughters raped and murdered in their home in 2007. dr. pettitte brutally beaten and barely escaping. the home set on fire by two madd men. steven hayes and joshua sardebtski. they were sentence to the death. >> i think forgiven -- the essence of evil is not appropriate. >> reporter: so much anger over the killings that when the connecticut legislature banned the death penalty in 2012, they did it only for murderers in the future. not wanting to let the pettitte family killers avoid execution. but today the state supreme court ruled that applying the death penalty ban in that kind of split enforcement is unconstitutional. this state's death penalty, the court ruled, no longer comports with the standards of

decency and no longer serves any ideological purpose. so ten inmates will now spend their lives in prison without the possibility of parole. >> this is a solemn connecticut. we have to keep in our minds how difficult this is for victims and victims' families. >> dr. pettitte tonight critical of the ruling saying it's disregarding keystones of our governmental structure. 31 states still have capital punishment. many states renal abolished -- recently abolished it. you've heard of people trying to break out of jail. one woman caught on camera trying to break in. why did she desperately want to get inside? and an apartment in one of new york's hottest neighborhoods for about $200!

as it does so, winds increase from the southwest with a light southerly breeze. and it gets humid. 90 is possible saturday and sunday. and a stretch that takings us into the middle of next week -- takes us into the middle of next week. hot and humid is the headline. and we could get a shower or storm in the coming day, mainly to the north. not a lot of instability. in and around the city, showers not fired up too much, but we won't rule it out saturday or sunday north of the city. west wind, 10 miles an hour tomorrow. great beach day. water 77 degrees. 87 degrees with that low humidity as temperatures climb. it'll feel a lot different starting on saturday. we hit 90. and that humidity will make it uncomfortable. dewpoints right now could be

in the 70s before the weekend is out. it's oppress and i have very uncomfortable. 92 expected on monday. tuesday 90 degrees, hot with thunderstorms. we hold onto the heat wednesday and thursday. but lower humidity by midweek could make those upper 80s feel bearable. so sometimes you defer the great benefits you've gotten. cautious or fat? a study settles the debate over which one you should cut from your diet.
