now, new york's number one news. channel 7 eye witness news. >> so, you look out the window and you see this. a camera with a drone staring right back at you. people in one neighborhood say it's happened to them and they want it to stop. good evening i'm rob powers. bill ritter is off tonight. >> i'm sade baderinwa. those people concern and had more than creeped out. heights. >> reporter: rob and sade, the construction worker who was allegedly operating that drone has since been found. he was issued a ticket by police and they confiscate it had drone. still, there are so many people

here asking what was it doing here in the first place? >> it had a camera on a swivel. we have no idea what it was filming or why it was there. >> reporter: witnesses say it was an invasion of privacy. it was spotted hovering near court street in brooklyn heights thursday. >> we were in just our office, it's a corner office bordered by two sets of windows and our boss was like oh my gosh there's a drone outside our window. we all gathered around. >> reporter: becca saw this drone and it hovered for about 5 minutes outside her office window and disappeared. >> it's a little bit disconcerning i guess that there's someone peering into our windows but i don't know. i don't think there's serious concern. it's more like probably someone with a hobby. >> reporter: a man was seen standing on the roof nearby. that building is closed and

under construction. cameras across the street captured these pictures of the man presumed to be the operator of the drone. harrison's supervisor called building management who quickly called police. >> there was a patient in the room and the drone was waiting at the window. it was right in front of the window. the patient is like what is that? what is that? the nurse saw and it she's like oh, my god. we just saw it flying around. it was scanning up and down windows and stuff. >> reporter: and a couple people asked me are there any laws for this? there are new faa rules being drafted to regulate drones. making sure you maintain line of sight, operating a drone that i not over people, which of course people pointed out there were a lot of people on the sidewalk and the street when this is going on. carolina leid, channel 7 eye witness news. >> carolina, thank you. new at 11, a fugitive on the run for 16 years after a murder

on long island now in custody. nasa county police say balco was found and arrested in trinidad and extradited back to the u.s. he allegedly shot and killed 19-year-old absol khan in queens after they got in an argument in 1999. he will be arraigned on monday. he wrote on facebook this would be the day he would die and he did. ak-47 shoots a firefighter. his mother who rush today the scene to coax him to surrender speaking out about his death. aj ross at the hospital where the firefighter is recovering. >> reporter: sade, mayor de blasio visited the lieutenant earlier today and he didn't way.

for that the mayor says we owe them our appreciation. a sunrise search warrant being deliver today the staten island home of 38-year-old garland tyree triggered a six hour standoff after he set off a smoke bomb and fired at firefighters as they entered his home. lieutenant james hays, a 31-year veteran was struck and wounded in his calf and behind. just before others could pull him out to safety. minutes later dozens of officers converged on this community as tyree barricaded himself inside his basement apartment for hours. police say tyree, a former gang member with 18 prior arrests fired what was later discovered to be an automatic ak-47 three separate times throughout the standoffs as negotiate ors tried to diffuse the situation. he spoke to his girlfriend, sister and mother who was flown there.

>> he said mom, i'm coming out. he told his sister he was coming out. >> reporter: he agreed to surrender peacefully. what happened next was anything but. police say tyree instead came outside armed with a gun and body armor and began to fire at police again. they returned fire and discovered him dead near the entrance of his apartment. >> this is not the way we want these negotiations to end. the vast majority of the time, hundreds and thousands of times we do these each year this is not how it ends. >> reporter: fortunately no police or bystanders were by. >> lieutenant james hayes, an extraordinary man. we appreciate lieutenant hays and wish him a speedy recovery. >> reporter: we wish him a speedy recovery. lieutenant hayes is the first new york firefighter to be shot

in the line of duty in 21 years. aj ross, channel 7 eye witness news. now intense moments at the news conference. somebody asked the mayor why he didn't arrive at the hospital sooner to visit the wounded firefighter. this was his response. >> we're briefing you all on a very serious situation and that's just not a serious question. >> the mayor went to a gym in park slope for about 80 minutes before heading to the hospital. sources tell eye witness news he was informed while at the gym that the firefighters injuries were likely to be minor. on staten island a man who posed as a doctor diagnosing and treating patients is under arrest. he pretended to be a doctor for the past three years and ran his fake practice out of a basement apartment in stapleton. he issued prescriptions to at least a hundred patients.

>> we cannot find he has any professional schooling whatsoever. he said he had a relationship with an online university. we checked with that university and they claim to have no knowledge of him. >> reporter: an attorney for lee edwards says his client was trying to help people and there was no evidence he harmed anyone. a frightening manhole explosion caught on camera on a crowded street in manhattan. repairs and inspections continuing right now at the sight of that blast on 9th avenue and what a blast it is. eye witness news reporter josh josh. spectacle here. con-ed crews closed up this manhole for the first time in 12 hours since this happened. for the sense of force this explosion came with, let's look possibly the manhole cover itself went through that window sending a cascade of shattered

glass to the sidewalk below. as onlookers gawked at the smoking manhole, they had no idea it was about to blow. as they ran for their lives you ground. glass from a 5th floor window shattered by project tile from this blast. street. they closed the street like one block that way and that way. >> reporter: con-ed blames a fire as they work to deal with that, several hours later it happened again at the northwest corner of the same intersection. >> manhole cover apparently went as high as that building there across the street, came back hydrant there. that's basically the gist of it. >> reporter: the manhole cover landed on top of a fire hydrant. heavy steel shattered. firefighters briefly blocked 9th avenue.

by the time it was open the damage was done. more than 14 blocks at a standstill at the height of a summer commute. >> thank god nobody got hurt. i'm surprised, actually. with the sound and it was so loud. i was just really surprised. thank god. it's a miracle nobody got hurt. >> reporter: back live, that was quite a wild scene. when have you ever seen something quite like this? a chunk of that fire hydrant that was really broken into a whole bunch of chunks like this. you can imagine the force that manhole cover had behind it when it slammed into the hydrant. no one was hurt in either explosion as con-ed figures out what caused this. they have started to break down the scene for the night. they say they will continue to be fixing this well into the night and tomorrow. josh einiger, channel 7 eye witness news.

the attack but dragged the suspect to the police station. here's eye witness news reporter rob nelson. >> lock him up. >> reporter: this sexual assault case is in the hands of the court but marreese already gave him a taste of street justice. >> that he would do that right there on the platform and not care, it was shocking. >> reporter: he was riding the 3 wednesday morning and when the subway doors opened he heard a woman screaming. police say the suspect 40-year-old alvaro had already fondled himself and approached the victim inside the train and tried to rape her on the platform after the doors opened. >> he was on top of her trying to do something. >> reporter: maurice ran towards the victim and punched him repeatedly and dragged him to a police station two blocks away. the woman following behind. >> i just picked him up and

tried to take him to the police precinct and she was following and crying. >> reporter: he remains humble but his mom could not be prouder. >> my son was her angel for that moment, you know, i'm glad that both of them are okay. >> reporter: maurice is living in a local shelter and training to become -- >> at bergen street there's no cameras or token booth. i think he knew he could get away with it. there was nobody down there. nobody, nothing. if i didn't come, it would have been over for her. >> reporter: the suspect has been arrested and is facing multiple charges including sexual assault. as for maurice he suffered minor injury. a gash to his head and he got that when he head butted the suspect. rob nelson, channel 7 eye witness news. a well deserved accommodation for a state

board. we got amy freeze in for lee goldberg tonight. it's a perfect weekend for the beach, right? >> it is. it'll be very hot and august like. it seems the last couple of weekends we've had this pleasant enjoyable weather in the 80s and the 90s are turning up. good evening, everybody. just outside our studios on the upper west side. just fine right now. temperatures are in the 70s here in the city and yeah, you're on tv. we're going to see them return to the 90s. some spots hit it today and we'll get it later on as well. as far as the temperatures go a pair of 7's in central park and 52% humidity and winds are calm and pressure is on the rise. overnight temperatures that have gone from near 90 degrees during the afternoon down now into the 60s and 70s will fall off. 60s. monticello. some of the spots are cooler and we get a head start tomorrow with the temperatures. we're also watching carefully these numbers. the dew points.

this is the measure of humidity in the atmosphere. how much moisture it's holding. when we get in the 50s and 60s we can look at the dew point scale and that makes things uncomfortable. it gets sticky and during the day tomorrow we're in the uncomfortable range and could hit oppressive by the end of the weekend. that's the feels like temperature in the middle 90s before all is said and done. no worries about storms. in fact, nothing to slow down the sunshine tomorrow. bright skies to start the day. saturday looks good. going into sunday, quick moving spring and will it's out of here. monday more instability north and west of the city. if you're making a get away, one of the choices is the cat skills and the higher elevations will be hot. hamptons, a nice breeze but the temperatures in the 80s. jersey shore you'll get the humidity. should feel good and a reminder the water temperatures are

we got a buoy reading 77 degrees. waves up to 4 feet and a west wind at 10 miles per hour and the current risk is low. 72 here in the city and that's how we start the day tomorrow and it's hot and humid with lots of sunshine. check out the numbers over the 7-day forecast. we have not yet had a heat wave this season. from tomorrow all the way through tuesday we've got a shot. even wednesday, thursday and friday our temperatures pushing to near 90 degrees. not a lot to cool us down. we have the bermuda high setting up off coast and that'll make it feel like tropical weather. if you're down in the beach, a lot of people like to get to the shore. a west winds start to crank up. do you know what i'm talking about? that's what happens with the west wind. that's when you want to take a quick dip and refresh. >> sounds good. up next, can a video game help cut cravings for junk food?
