>> i heard click, click, click, click and i started running like it was hitting trees. around the corner, huge explosion, gigantic explosion. >> a tragedy. a pilot is killed when the small plane crashes after take off. >> travel turbulence. a technical glitch snarls air traffic over the northeast from new york to the carolinas. good evening, i'm sandra bookman. joe has the night off. we begin with the deadly plane crash in new jersey. the pilot was killed when the single-engine plane went down in central new jersey.

the cessna 206 had just left essex county airport pound for teterboro when the pilot experienced mechanical difficulties. the plane went down near the airport in west caldwell. that's where renee stoll is right now. renee? >> reporter: good evening, sandra. the faa and the ntsb are currently investigating what caused this plane to nosedive, according to witnesses, a half mile from the airportment you can see just how close it came to this day care that we are standing in front of. just past that 100 yards is the blue tent covering where the plane crashed. >> i seen it coming this way really, really low. like it would hit these trees almost. >> the sound of a low flying plane that caught the attention of several people near the kit di academy in west caldwell saturday morning. >> as soon as i started walking down this path here, i heard click, click, click, click and i started running like it was

hitting trees or something. as soon as i came around the corner, huge explosion, gigantic explosion. >> reporter: according to police the 50-year-old new jersey pilot flying a cessna 206 had just taken off from essex county airport a half mile away. >> on his way to teterboro to pick up a passenger. he experienced a malfunction. we don't know what it was. ended up trying to turn back to the airport, we believe and crashed in the field. >> reporter: the noise so loud it had this entire family that outside. >> we didn't think it was a plane crash at first. >> reporter: one of them taking this cell phone of smoke pouring out of the woods. some tried to help but couldn't get near the flames. the pilot did not survive. >> i ran in and called 911. i ran across. by the time i got there, a second explosion then a third explosion. >> there was cans or fuel or tanks that were exploding. >> reporter: the plane landed 100 yards from the playground

in the rear of the kiddie academy which normally has dozens of children playing during the week. >> a very busy center. a lot of kids in there. >> thank god that it wasn't on the building or anything. >> could have been a lot worse. >> reporter: here is another live look at where that plane crashed. i went to essex county airport for more information. employees would not comment except to say the pilot did not have to check in with them, only at the tower. police aren't sure if the pilot radioed the tower and said exactly what kind of problems he was having. reporting live in west caldwell, new jersey, renee stoll, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you, renee. a tactical trouble in virginia is making travel difficult for thousands of air travelers on the east coast. we are looking at laguardia. flights in and out of new york and washington, d.c. areas were grounded with delays of almost

three hours in some cases. to give you an idea of how chaotic it was, check out this tweet from flight radar showing all the planes being forced to avoid a huge area around washington. eyewitness news reporter a.j. ross is live this laguardia. a.j. >> reporter: sandra, i checked inside a short time ago at the departure and arrival boards. things are clearing up but there are lingering delays. it has been a long and stressful day for passengers at laguardia as well as up and down the east coast because of this faa computer glitch. weekend get away plans were put on hold for thousands of airline passengers. after the federal aviation administration reported a computer problem at one of the virginia air traffic control centers. the ripple effects of the glitch stretched up and down the east coast with flights in and out of the new york and washington, d.c. metropolitan areas reporting delays as long as two hours and 45 minutes in some cases.

>> set to depart at 10:54 and as we boarded the plane and sat down we were told by the captain that there were delays and we may possibly deplane because there was air traffic control failure. >> reporter: according to information posted on the faa web site the source was connected to a computer system used by air traffic controllers at centers handling high altitude air traffic. it wasn't believed to be caused by an accident or hacking but an investigation is ongoing. >> we are going to jamaica, kingston, because of the delays we will spend 13 hours in richmond and now we are flying directly there. >> reporter: meanwhile, laguardia and j.f.k. reported various delays due to the glitch and passengers were forced to sit tight and in some cases rearrange travel plans together. >> i would like to get home by the end of the day today. that would be great. >> reporter: although the glitch has been resolved, the

faa is continuing to work with airlines tonight to minimize the impact on passengers. live at laguardia, a.j. ross, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you, a.j. new at 6:00, staten island firefighter has been released from the hospital one day after being shot by a man barricaded inside an apartment. dozens of new york's bravest cheered as lieutenant james hayes left the richmond university medical center this afternoon. police say the 31-year-old veteran of the fdny was shot by garland tyree that set off a smoke bomb. police fatally shot him after he opened fire on first responders. police in queens are investigating the possible kidnapping of a teenage girl that ran in a shoe repair shop begging for help. she ran in crying into the shop on 81st in east elmhurst this morning. the man believed to be her ex- boyfriend followed her. as two bystanders tried to

intervene, the man pulled out a knife and threatened one of them. he dragged the girl to a car and drove off with her. we have new information on the deadly outbreak of legionnaires in new york city. health officials say 124 have been sickened up from 121 yesterday. 12 people died from the outbreak in the south bronx. 94 patients were treated and released from hospitals and although more people have been diagnosed, there have been new cases of legionnaires since august 3rd. >> in new jersey, police say a boat driver had been drinking when he crashed into a jetty forcing a dangerous rescue operation. it happened in rough waters off shores in spring lake last night. coast guard units and crews from five agencies worked to get the three people on board to safety. one passenger suffered a serious head injury. thomas mckinley was arrested on

intoxicated. in nassau county, a man is under arrest in connection to a car crash that killed his son and girlfriend two years ago. officers stopped him in garden city this morning. they then discovered that he was wanted on two counts of driving. prosecutors say he crashed his 2013. his 4-year-old son and girlfriend died from their injuries. police in suffolk county are investigating a deadly head- on crash in montauk highway. a jeep crossed into oncoming traffic slamming into a pickup truck. the jeep burst into flames. the driver was killed. the pickup truck driver, dylann hughes, suffered minor injuries. his 6-month-old daughter in the back seat was not hurt. now to the race for president. forget the food and the rides. the newest attractions at the

new video of trouble on the new jersey turnpike where an s.u.v. burst into flames this afternoon near exit 16-w. the chevy trailblazer with four occupants was heading to metlife stadium when the driver noticed a fire burning in the back and pulled over. everyone got out safely.

the driver detached a trailer so it wouldn't be damaged. the car was destroyed. three lanes of the turnpike were shut down for an hour. an unusual sight on the upper east side. worshippers celebrating mass on the sidewalk outside their church. the church was shuddered two weeks ago by the archdiocese. parishers of our lady of peace say the archdiocese told them the church would reopen for special holy days. they thought that would include today's feast of the assumption. but when the archdiocese said today didn't qualify, worshippers decided to hold a vice outside. they are planning more as they petition to get the church reopened. it was a gorgeous sunny morning, perfect for last day of this year's summer treats event in manhattan. for a third saturday in a row, park avenue was shut down to traffic giving new yorkers plenty of space to sickle, walk

weather. summer streets is a yearly tradition since it started in 2008 with hundreds much thousands of people taking advantage of the fun activities on a 7-mile stretch of park avenue and lafayette street. a contest brings out some the beach. coming up on eyewitness news, sand sculptors out enjoying the weather in a special competition in coney island. >> it has been a beautiful day for sand castles and just about anything else.

plenty of sand sculptors put their skills to the test at the coney island sand sculpting contest. the competition brought some of the top pros and amateurs to the beach. the contest started in 1990 with 20 families competing. this year we will see the biggest turnout with 100 participants. pretty impressive, quite frankly. >> lot of detail on that. >> impressive. they got a real hot summer day to work their magic, did they not? >> interesting, you head into late august you think summer is winding down, temperatures cool off a little bit. not the case at all this year. >> seems like they wound up slowly this year. >> we got off to a slow startment we may have not one accuweather forecast. we haven't had an official heat wave since 2013.

a couple of years ago a. live look toward the empire state building to one world trade. it looks like it's getting haze year out there. air quality is going down. we have an air quality alert in effect through 11:00 tonight. temperature is 84 thanks to the south wind that came in off the atlantic ocean. the high on the day was 92 after a morning low of 73. need less to say well above normal. 97 was the record in 1998. we could be approaching and exceeding record highs by monday and tuesday. sun setting at 7:55. 90 down the shore at belmar. not quite up to 90 on the island because we had the wind from the cooler waters of the atlantic. right now 84 in the park. 82 at j.f.k. airport. inland away from the ocean influence and you are sitting at the 90-degree mark in morristown and 91 poughkeepsie. 73 monticello with a couple of thunderstorms.
