>> i don't want a teenager kidnapped at knife point and dragged away by her ex-boyfriend. tonight, police release new details about the suspect they're looking for. but first, tragedy at a local beach. a 5-year-old boy pulled underwater, a frantic effort to find and save him but rescuers were too late.

good evening, everyone, i'm sandra bookman. >> and i'm rob powers, joe torres is off tonight. the beach in queens packed today with families trying to escape the heat. the incident leaving the people shaken. >> you can see crowds of people gathered on the beaches rescuers tried to find that little boy. now identified as 5-year-old ezekiel gray. his body was pulled out of the eyewitness news reporter a.j. a.j.? >> reporter: sandra, rob, one minute he was on the beach, the next he was gone. and tonight, family members and witnesses are mourning the tragic loss of 5-year-old ezekiel gray. who was found lifeless in the water here at the park just hours ago. >> helicopters. ambulance, fire department. i knew something terrible happened. >> reporter: witnesses say there was little to no warning before helicopters and first responders suddenly swarmed the beach here at jacob riis park saturday afternoon searching

for 5-year-old gray. beachgoers say the boy was with family when he somehow managed to slip away. >> like parents a lot of people from on the beach -- the beachgoers, was looking for him. >> reporter: police say an on duty lifeguard eventual he located the small child in the water. and brought him to shore. but when medics arrived he was unconscious and unresponsive. >> they were trying hard to revive him and they were unsuccessful. they brought him to the boardwalk. tried again. tried to keep his -- he was lifeless. >> they put him on a stretcher. and they were trying to revive him. they really tried. but it was too late. >> reporter: after several attempts to revive him on scene, med i thinks rushed the boy to brook dale hospital where he was later pronounced dead. the sudden and tragic loss now has many offering their condolences to the family and questioning if more could have been done to prevent this. >> i think it's terrible because there are lifeguards here. >> i think it's awful. i have an 8-year-old myself. i have a 4-year-old.

nobody knew the kid was missing until the helicopters arrived and first responders. >> reporter: just tragic, and now the medical examiner will officially determine the cause of death. live in far rockaway this evening i'm a.j. ross, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> certainly a sad story. thank you. there are new developments tonight in the kidnapping of an 18-year-old woman in queens. she has been found. a few minutes ago we learned that woman was dropped off by her ex-boyfriend on a street corner not far from where he allegedly abducted her. police say 18-year-old myship jimenez was forced into a -- michelle jimenez was forced into a car this morning by her ex, 21-year-old jonathan coronel. she ran into a shoe repair shop trying with him behind her. two bystanders tried to intervene but they say he pulled out a knife.

backed up. he pushed her inside of the car on the backseat. >> the witnesses say he drove off with jimenez. this is a mug shot of him from aggravated harassment. new tonight, police are investigating a crash that killed three people on the taconic state parkway. four cars were involved in the crash about 3:00 this afternoon in yorktown. northbound lost control. hit an embankment and went airborne. it crashed into southbound lanes striking three other cars. three people died. their names not being released. five others are in stable condition at the hospital. the faa says an air traffic control problem that caused a travel nightmare at airports up and down the east coast has now been resolved. right now no major delays are being reported in this area. but earlier today, it was a travel mess. thousands of travelers from here down to the carolinas

grounded because of technical issues at the air traffic control center in virginia. took more than six hours for that problem to be fixed. much to the frustration of travelers. >> as we boarded the plane and sat down we were told by the captain that there were -- delays and possibly deplane. >> he said that it was going to be an indefinite delay. they wanted to deboard the plane and it would be at least 90 minutes before they had another update even. >> the faa says the snarl was the result of an automation problem. it doesn't believe it was caused by an accident or by hacking. the investigation into a deadly plane crash in new jersey is now underway. police are trying to figure out what caused that cessna 206 to go down. ntsb agents were on the scene in west caldwell tonight to analyze the wreckage. the plane had just left the essex county airport headed for teterboro airport when it crashed killing the pilot. eyewitness news reporter renee

stoll has the story. >> i seen it coming this way, just really, really low like it was going to hit these trees almost. >> reporter: the sound of a plane that caught the attention of several people near the kiddie academy in west caldwell saturday morning. >> as soon as i started walking down this -- down this path right here, i heard click, click, click, click. click and i started running like it was hitting trees or something. and as soon as i came around the corner, huge explosion. gigantic explosion. >> reporter: according to police, the 50-year-old new jersey pilot flying a cessna 206 had just taken off from essex county airport half a mile away. >> it was on his way to teterboro airport to pick up a passenger, he experienced some sort of malfunction. we don't know clearly what it was. and you know he ended up trying to turn back towards the airport we believe and he crashed in the field. >> reporter: the noise had this entire family who lives across the street running outside. >> we didn't think it was a plane crash at first. >> reporter: one of them take this can cell phone video of smoke pouring out of the woods. some witnesses tried to help.

but couldn't get near the flames. the pilot did not survive. >> i ran in and i called 1991 # -- 911 and then i also ran across. it was like a second education motion. and then -- explosion and there was like a third explosion. >> there was other i guess cans or fuel or tanks that were exploding in the air. >> reporter: the plane landed just 100 yards from the playground in the rear of the kiddie academy which normally has dozens of children playing during the week. >> it's a very busy center. there's a lot of kids in there. >> thank god that it wasn't you anything. worse. >> a lot worse. >> reporter: the faa and the ntsb are investigating where the plane crashed there under that blue tarp. now police aren't sure if the pilot radioed the tower and said what exactly he was experiencing when everything went wrong. reporting in west caldwell, new jersey, i'm renee stoll, channel 7 eyewitness news. a staten island firefighter shot in the line of duty is

back home tonight. dozens of new york's bravest cheered as lieutenant james hayes left the richmond university methodical center this afternoon. -- medical center this afternoon. police say the 31-year-old veteran of the fdny was shot by a garland tyree who set off a smoke bomb inside his apartment in mariners harbor. police fatally shot tyree after he opened fire on first responders. >> more cases reported tonight in the deadly outbreak of legionnaire's disease in the bronx. have been sickened. that's up from 121 yesterday. 12 people have now died from that outbreak in the south bronx and 94 patients were released if hospitals and although more people have been diagnosed there have been no reported since august 3rd. in new jersey, police say a boat driver had been drinkening forcing a dangerous rescue operation. it happened in rough waters offshore in spring lake late last night.

coast guard units and crews from five agencies worked to get the three people on board to safety. one passenger suffered a serious head injury. 52-year-old thomas mcginley was arrested on charges of boating while intoxicated. also in new jersey traffic trouble on the turnpike where an suv burst into flames this afternoon. it happened near exit 16 w. in east rutherford. police say the chevy trailblazer with four occupants was heading to metlife stadium when the driver noticed a fire burning in the back and pulled over and everyone did get out safely. the driver detached a trailer that the vehicle was pulling so it wouldn't be damaged. the car however was destroyed and three lanes to have turnpike were shut down -- of the turnpike were shut down for an hour. police want help identifying a woman found injured in manhattan. take a look, this woman was found lying on the ground on 11th avenue near 43rd street on the west side. she was taken to the hospital in stable condition. police say she does not speak

the two front runners in the race for president mingled with voters at the iowa state fair today. donald trump arrived by helicopter allowed kids to go up for free rides and also attacked his rival candidates and promised to unveil more on his immigration policy tomorrow. >> you are going to love me in terms of immigration. and illegal immigration. we're building a wall. it's going to be a wall that is not -- nobody is going through my wall. trump builds walls i build walls. >> trump did not cross paths with democratic candidate hillary clinton who was also at the fair today. mrs. clinton touring the fair with the former senator from iowa tom harken and repeated her statement that no classified information was kept on her e-mail server and also asked about the fight against isis.

surgery and is in critical condition. the other broke his leg and is otherwise expected to be okay. a search is underway right now off the coast of newfoundland, canada for a crew member from the queen mary ii who went overboard. the liner was headed from south hampton, england to new york and due to make a stop? halifax -- in halifax on monday when a crew member fell overboard this morning. shore: another issue is the -- [ inaudible ] building in. not a whole lot of wind involved. in effect. so if you have -- heart or lung condition you want to avoid strenuous activity during the hottest and -- the hottest part of the day during the afternoon. here's the radar picture showing those storms that were located north of the city. those are weakening and heading off to the east. big ridge of high pressure in atmosphere building over the eastern third of the country. that means we're going a steam bath right through the early part of the week and heat values of 95 to 105 be that hot flow. in the meantime down to about 75 in the park and my highs tomorrow up to 94 and so if anything a couple of degrees warmer than it was today. accuweather forecast overnight mainly clear and warm muggy. we're down to about 75. warm and muggy at 7:00 in the morning and could be some patchy fog north and west of the city. 76. we're going top to 94 tomorrow. tomorrow.

as carlos beltran for the second straight game goes deep in the 1st inning. his 12th home run of the season. moving to the 6th inning. mark teixeira, blasting his 31st of the season. it wraps around the foul pole in right. the yankees taking a 2-1 lead. but the men of the hour tanaka, manager girardi calling this the biggest name of his career. he was masterful. here in the bottom of the 7th he gets guy ins of a swinging strike and then follows with a called strike on ben jumping revere. he got the complete game and yankees win 4-1. the yankees are now up a game and a half over toronto and go for the sweep, sweep tomorrow. from the big boys, we go to the stars of the future. it's the regional championships for the little league world series. the team from jackson, new jersey taking on the boys from dell mar, maryland. the jersey boys showing no mercy jake win dell goes deep for a two run blast. making the score 9-0.

let's take look at tonight's top stories, an 18- year-old woman allegedly abducted by her ex-boyfriend has been found. michelle jimenez was dropped off on a street corner earlier tonight. police say 21-year-old jonathan coronel took the woman in east elmhurst this morning. police are still looking for him. a 5-year-old boy from brooklyn drowns at a beach in queens, ezekiel gray was pulled from the water at the park. the emergency crews rushed him to the hospital but he died a short time later. also a pilot killed when his single engine plane crashed in central new jersey. the plane had just taken off from essex county airport when it experienced mechanical problems and it crashed in west caldwell. no one on the ground was injured. but topping the news this half hour, a nightmare travel day for thousands of airline passengers. the result of a crippling air traffic computer failure. >> yeah, the glitch emptying skies from new york to south carolina. stranding summer travelers

until that system came back online. here's eyewitness news reporter a.j. ross. >> reporter: weekend get away plans were put on hold saturday for thousands of airline passengers after the federal aviation administration reported a computer problem at one of their virginia air traffic control centers. the ripple effects of the glitch stretched all up and down the east coast with flights into and out of the new york and washington, d.c. metropolitan areas reporting delays as long as two hours and 45 minutes in some cases. >> it was said to deboard at 10:54. we were told by the captain that there were delays and we would possibly deplane because there was air traffic control failure. >> reporter: according to information posted on the faa website, the source of the problem was connected to a computer system used by air traffic controllers at centers handling high altitude air traffic. it was not leaved to be caused by an accident or hacking but

an investigation is ongoing. >> we're going to go to jamaica, kingston and because of the delays, we're going to spend 13 hours in richmond and now -- we're just flying directly there. >> reporter: and passengers were forced to sit tight in some cases rearrange their travel plans altogether. >> i would like to get home by the end of the day today. that'd be great. >> reporter: although the glitch has been resolved the faa is continuing to work with airlines tonight to minimize the impact on passengers. at laguardia, i'm a.j. ross, channel 7 eyewitness news. also tonight, police in suffolk county investigating a deadly crash on montauk highway. a jeep crossed over into on coming traffic last night. it slammed into a pickup truck and the jeep burst into flames. the driver was killed. the pickup truck driver dillon hughes had minor injuries and his 6-month-old daughter in the backseat was not hurt.

and in nassau county, a man is under arrest in connection with a car crash that killed his son and girlfriend. two years ago. officers stopped vitas in garden city is this morning and discovered he was wanted on the counts of manslaughter and reckless driving and prosecutors say he crashed his car into a tree back in 2013 in west bury. his 4-year-old son and girlfriend died from their injuries. a woman was critically injured in a fire that destroyed five buildings in trenton. police say a 21-year-old woman was burned over 70% of her body in the fire that broke out in the basement of her house last night. another resident burned his hands carrying the woman from that burning building. the flames spread to four neighboring homes before crews could put -- bring that blaze under control. in brooklyn, police are still trying to track down the gunman behind a deadly shooting. the video showing a man police say followed three people into

a building thursday night on saratoga avenue in brownsville. he opens fire and then takes off. police were alerted to this scene by the nypd's shot spotter gunfire detection system. when they got there, they found three men had been shot. 21-year-old isaiah cisero was killed. the other two were gyred. new blasts and more evacuations in china, as authorities find potentially deadly chemicals in the air. the death toll is now more than 100 and the search and rescue effort continues tonight. abc's bob woodruff with the story. >> reporter: three days after those massive explosions, a miracle. emerging from the charred rubble. rescuers pulling a 50-year-old man to safety. many of those rescuers wearing protective masks as they carry him to an ambulance. the man reportedly spent three days trapped in a shipping container but tonight is

recovering in a hospital. the race to find the missing more urgent than ever. as explosions sparked new blazes. the government insisting the air is safe. you can see that the police are clearing out the area. they got growing concerns. and now authorities have identified some of those dangerous chemicals unleashed by the disaster. one, sodium cyanide could be deadly. relatives of missing firefighters stormed a news conference today demanding answers. we are extremely worried this woman says, our son, he's just turned 18. now the number of the dead is still on the rise and at least 85 killed. more than 700 injured and many people are still missing which has made the families increasingly angry. bob woodruff, abc news, china. dramatic video of people escaping a burning boat in the philippines. this two story ferry with more than 500 passengers on board caught fire while it was still

docked in the town of ormock. passengers climbed down from the roof deck. the cause of the fire still under investigation. new at 11:00, a new jersey man is under arrest accused of trying to attack his family with two ninja style swords. police say 22-year-old john mamorel jr. swung two 24-inch swords at family members during a dispute at their home in lodi on thursday. others in the house were able to subdue him until police arrived. he is now facing aggravated assault and weapons charges. and unusual sight on ther east side this morning -- upper east side this morning. worshipers on the sidewalk outside their church celebrating mass, shuttered two weeks ago by the archdiocese. parishioners of our lady of peace on say they told them the church would reopen for special holy days, they thought that included today's feast of the assumption.

so this heat wave it's looking like we are going to have maybe a couple of them? the first heat wave since 2013 officially and then we could have another one late next week into next weekend. so we heads outside right now. and the ohm spear state building build up in wean, white and -- green, white and orange for india day. that wind coming in from the southwest around 5 miles per hour and highs today 92 in the park and got up to 94 at newark. at belmar. you didn't get much relief down by the water except on island you did because that one was from the southwest. -- wind was from the southwest. right now temperatures in the lower and middle 80s in the hudson valley urban centers though like new york city and still stuck in the low 80s and that will be the pattern that we have during the next several mights urban areas get hardly any relief at night. you get that urban heat island all the concrete in the city absorbs the heat during the day and retransmits the heat at night into the and that's why you don't get much relief out there.
