tied an all-time record heat high, and they don't have a beach to go to, there were some 86 heat-related emergencies. this morning, brutal. miserable. skyrocketing. >> the humidity was out of control. it made it even hotter. >> reporter: roughly 14 million people under excessive heat warnings. >> we had multiple patients. >> reporter: the mercury hit record-breaking highs on saturday in arizona. 21 people taken from the stadium to be taken for heat-related illnesses. in phoenix, officials called out twice to rescue hikers. further west, swarms of sting rays drawn to l.a. county beaches. the sweltering heat proving to be your tires' worst enemy. putting drivers at risk.

volatile weekend out west. from southern california to oregon and washington. fires raged across a huge swath of the west. an all-out fight. more than 10,000 firefighters on the front lines. around the vacation community of chelan, washington, up to 50 homes and other structures lost. you can see where the fire went through the fruit-packing warehouse. through the trees. torched these home, onward to the hills behind. some of the smoldering homes only accessible now by boat. >> oh, my gosh. >> reporter: this weekend, beachgoers shared the lake with airplanes and helicopters picking up water, attacking the steep hillsides. dumping flame retardant so close, a komo tv camera man was drenched in it. >> some of us don't have homes to go home to. >> reporter: in california, triple-digit temperatures

delay. if you want to just shut them both down, shut them beauoth down. >> reporter: a glitch causing this hole in the sky. saturday passengers looking for answers. >> they said the screens had gone blank in washington center. >> reporter: some passengers went to social media with the hash tag flypocalypse. a control center outside of washington went down. meaning nearly 500 flights were canceled. another 500 delayed. some for hours. turns out, it was a software update that actually caused the problem leading to the system going down. that meant sunday, airlines scrambled to get their jets in the right position for the beginning of the work week. >> yous that have to be scheduled. people have to get places. it has a terrible effect on the whole system across the united states, not just one small sector.

of the drug has promised the fda that to curb potential misuse, it will not advertise on tv or radio for 18 months, robin and george. >> thank you, rebecca. to amy. the plane crash in indonesia. that's right. a search plane has spotted wreckage believed to be from a passenger jet that disappeared on sunday. the trigana air service flight was seven miles from the airport when it disappeared. it may have been carrying half a villagers. back here at home, a deadly midair collision between two small planes near san diego. five fem were killed when the planes collided as they approached the airport. the pentagon is reportedly planning to dramatically expand the drone program. the number of drone flights will jump 50% over the next four years for surveillance of global hot spots.

and tragic end for a decorated soldier who survived several tours of duty in iraq and afghanistan. the army sky diver was killed at home when he collided with another jumper at an air show. more from mara schiavocampo. >> we need an ambulance over here. >> reporter: this terrifying video. two skydivers collide midair in front of a crowd of thousands. one of those jumpers, 32-year-old corey hood slamming into a high-rise apartment building. then later, plunging 30 stories to the ground. >> it was scary. everyone just stopped talking. it was a moment of silence. >> reporter: hood suffering head injuries and broken bones from the collision died sunday. despite the immense safety measures taken during jumps, the cincinnati native was a 14-year decorated veteran who served

breaking now from buses to trains, new jersey transit is dealing with heavy delays. newscopter 7 is live with john del giorno over secaucus junction. >> michelle, it's one of those jersey transit. this began around 7:00 with a car fire in the outbound lincoln tunnel. that caused delays at the port authority bus terminal which in turn caused new jersey transit city. instead they came to the secaucus train station. that's what you are looking at here. that worked fine until a train broke down in the hudson river tunnel causing delays on new jersey transit trains as well. the latest is that the lincoln tunnel has been reopened. new jersey transit started sending buses back into the city. that train is disabled, 60- minute delays on all trains and buses in and out of new york city. live over secaucus, john del giorno, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> all right.
