trading in the air conditioned theater for a steamy outdoor showing at bryant park. >> jeff smith in for lee goldberg. >> the city has such a hard time cooling off, it's almost like a brick oven. absorbing all the sunlight, the concrete surfaces baking like crazy and at night you can't cool down. we're in the mid 80s right now. we also that record in the park goes back more than 70 years, back to 1944. it's a true heat wave, our first one since july of 2014. 85 at laguardia airport. you head father -- farther outside of the city you're cooling off at 70 in monticello. dew point measuring the amount of moisture in the level, basically our comfort level straddling between uncomfortable and oppressive categories. there's an air quality alert for much of new

jersey, through 5:30 on tuesday. this will be reissued in to the city of long island and lower hudson valley. you want to avoid strenuous activity outdoors especially if you have a heart or lung condition. the radar showing a couple showers that developed over southwestern. those are weakening right now. did cause a little minor flooding earlier tonight. lows getting in to the upper 70s. barely below 80 in the park. tomorrow day 4 of our heat wave. 91 for a high. 96 at morristown. a little bit of relief right near the water. first heat wave since july 2013 now fully underway. you want to stay in air conditioned places if you can. if you can't, stay hydrated and avoid heavy exercise outdoors. we do have relief in the accuweather forecast but we pay for it with thunderstorm activity. we'll talk about that coming up. we have lots of ways to get up to the minute updates of the conditions outside. you can

download the abc 7 ny app or head to abc7ny online. an elderly woman found stabbed inside her home. jim dolan with new details. >> this was a horrific scene. police came a upon this afternoon, an elderly woman stabbed in the neck. she later died. police will not yet confirm a family relationship between her and the woman now in custody and about to be charged with her murder. >> it was one loud scream. i don't know if it was a male or female but i definitely heard something. >> reporter: in moments police arrived to a chilling scene. a murdered. the gruesome story playing out directly across from a grammar school. deirdre's mother lives right next door. >> my mom is doing okay. she's just shook up. that's her neighbor and she's known this it's

tough on her and we all know her. >> she was just a pleasant and nice woman. always cordial. always said hell o. she was just a nice woman. >> reporter: as detectives searched for evidence in the case, neighbors mournd the loss of a woman who was always there for others. >> she used to come over and see if my mom was okay. they were close. and she was there when my father passed away. >> she's just a really nice lady. really nice lady. i don't know who did it but that's a real sin. >> we're back live now. a woman is in custody and is being charged with this murder. police are just now leaving from this scene. this happened this morning around midmorning and the woman will be charged overnight or early tomorrow morning with this murder. we're not reporting the victim's name

or the woman will be charged with that murder. happening now, a manhunt on staten island for the suspect in a rain of a 7-year-old girl. police are canvassing the streets of port richmond searching for 32-year-old daniel nieto. he was actually arrested 11 days ago for breaking in to the victim's home but it wasn't until after he was released from custody that she told detectives he had also entered her bedroom and sexually assaulted her. new at 11:00, tourist snapped an illegal selfie on the brooklyn bridge, little did he know he was prepping for his mugshot. we learned david is scheduled in court later this month. new york governor andrew cuomo tonight announcing emergency regulations for the entire state to combat the

threat of legionnaires disease. residents gathered for a meeting with health officials. the outbreak has sickened 124 people and caused 12 deaths. >> it's safe to eat and drink at restaurants and buy food and drinks from restaurants in south bronx. absolutely. this outbreak has nothing to do with the food supply or air conditioning or water used in any of the food you might buy at a restaurant or grocery store. >> among governor cuomo's emergency regulations, the inspection and disinfecting of all cooling towers in the next 30 days. frightening new video tonight of a violent robbery on manhattan's upper west side. police just releasing this surveillance video of the attack. it happened last month in the lobby of an apartment building. a man followed two women in the building then attacked one of them, stealing a purse before taking off on foot. the purse was recovered with everything still inside. also new at 11:00, a

grieving family pleading for answers tonight on the one-year anniversary of an unsolved double murder. the mother of kenny jimenez crying at the scene where her 21-year-old son was shot dead last august 17th outside a deli in hamilton heights. jimenez' family says they still have no clue of anyone who would have wanted to harm him and police have no leads. >> he's destroyed our lives. there's one member missing from my family. it was my only brother and my mother's only son. things are not the same. our family is broken. >> police released surveillance video that shows the suspect shooting and his white nissan altima getaway car. happening tomorrow, delays on four subway lines in the middle of the morning commute. today rush hour riders say they waited for what seemed like

forever in the hot sticky subway stations. the mta says necessary track work means about eight fewer trains per hour will run on the e, the f, the n and r lines. the work lasting for the next three weeks. for specific times of the delay you can go to abc7ny.com and look for the link on the homepage. an alert for use the george washington bridge. lower level lanes to new york city are closed overnight. traffic will be diverted from 9 p.m. through 5 a.m. friday night closures will be in effect from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m., to allow crews to remove temporary construction platforms. it's a common issue throughout the tri-state. what roads look like after they're dug up for utility work. tonight one local mayor said he's had enough and he's taking on the power company. josh einiger in jersey city tonight. >> this is an example of what the jersey city mayor is so upset about.

this trench dug starts down grove street and continues way up in this direction. mayor steven phillips says this is unacceptable and shows what he calls an utter disregard by pse&g. tonight he's ordered the company to get out of town. >> reporter: in downtown jersey city the signs of recent utility work are everywhere. >> i'll use the patches, as long as it doesn't break your tires i'm okay. >> it's a city street. what are you going to do? pave the whole street? come on. >> reporter: actually that's exactly what mayor steven phillip wants and today he threw down the gauntlet at the power company responsible for most of the work. tonight his office sent us this video news release plasting pse&g for destroying the pristine streets, the mayor

revoking the utility's permits for seven ongoing projects until it ponies up for more than a simple patch. >> pse&g has shown utter disregard to urban areas. you can see what they deem acceptable. >> reporter: the most egregious example, he says, on columbus drive. they date to 2011 and appear to be among the newest streets here. >> it's important he focuses on the roads. i don't know if the pse&g is the problem, whether that's the city's solution or if they work with pse&g to fix the roads. >> reporter: in restoring roads, pse&g said in a statement we don't treat urban and suburban towns differently. while this work may be inconvenient, we are making it more resilient and reliable following severe weather like sandy. >> you should see the roads of new york, it's like driving on the moon. >> back live, it's hard to

at the age of 110, she was believed to be the oldest u.s. veteran. tonight we remember emma didlake who died at her home in michigan. she was honored for her service by president obama at the white house. she was 38 when she joined the women's army axiliary core in 1938 and served stateside. republican presidential frontrunner donald trump is back in campaign mode tonight after a brief detour for jury duty. trump arrived at the courthouse in lower manhattan in a stretch limo. he was greeted by a large crowd of reporters, fans, and on lookers. he spent much of the day like other prospective

jurors filling out forms and waiting and even nodding off a time or two. he won't have to return tomorrow but trump said he enjoyed the system. >> it's a system and we go through it. it's a great system. it's a system that works and they did a fantastic job and i met some wonderful people. >> he was funny in person. she seemed pretty bored there like the rest of us. it was exciting. not what i thought jury duty would be like. >> trump had been summoned five times before but was a no-show. his campaign claims it went to one of his other homes. stevie wonder surprised many by popping up in central park to perform for free. he technically headed back on tour this fall but tonight many lucky new yorkers got a preview. eyewitness news reporter aj ross has been tweeting video from the

concert tonight and she just talked with the legendary stevie wonder. by the way the hashtag to this is great assignment. >> absolutely right. reatassignment. resspassperks. it didn't feel like work tonight as i along with thousands of stevie wonder fans got to enjoy his greatest hits along with in central park. >> reporter: with his one of a kind voice and flare on the piano, the legendary stevie wonder took center stage in central park monday night where a popup concert promoted his songs in the key of life tour. from classics to new releases, he kept the crowd singing and dancing for nearly 90 minutes, at times cracking jokes between sets. >> would you trust me driving you in a you lie. you lie. >> reporter: but also using his musical platform to speak to current issues and advocate change. >> we need to focus more on how we can encourage each other,

>> lucky her. she got to speak with him, listen to great music. great night tonight. and the weather helped out. >> we were a little bit worried about a couple showers developing. that didn't happen. only happened in parts of new jersey during the evening hours. ended up being perfect in central park. albeit a little bit muggy. tomorrow will be the fourth and final installment of the heat wave. here's a live look right now over toward midtown. temperatures still sitting at 84 degrees. that wind southwest around 6 miles per hour. the high on the day getting up to 95. that record tying high of 95 after a morning low of 78. we'll get down to similar levels overnight tonight, probably barely below the 80-degree mark. 95 that record from 1944. sun coming up tomorrow at around 6:08. still steamy out there tomorrow. not quite as hot. could be a spotty thunderstorm. this type of air mass you can't rule out a thunderstorm on any one of these days including wednesday and thursday. not going to be

getting everyone wet. but if you do fall under one of these storms, could be a heavy downpour for a few minutes. near normal temperatures on wednesday and thursday but the humidity will really hang on. then the next chance of getting widespread storms, heavier thunderstorm activity is thursday night, potentially lasting in to friday as well. 84 again in the park. falling in to the 70s in many of the suburbs. we head out to western parts of new jersey where you had a heavier shower, thunderstorm area over the delaware water gap. that's since weakened over western parts of hunterdon county, new jersey. we could get showers redeveloping during the day tomorrow especially northwest of the city. high getting up to 91. not as hot as it was today. parts of sent central new jersey could still get in to the mid 90s tomorrow. warm and humid on wednesday. 84. so we take off many more degrees from those high temperatures but the humidity if anything might increase by wednesday in to thursday and with that the chance of thunderstorms potentially increasing as well wednesday afternoon and

especially by thursday evening and friday morning as this front gradually approaches the tri-state area. the front will get hung up along the coast leaving our chance of getting a shower or thunderstorm on friday. beyond that though, beyond that timeframe, cooler and less humid air tries to come in for the weekend. waves around 3 feet. water temperatures in the low to mid 70s. watch out for those rip currents out there. accuweather forecast for 7:00 in the morning. sunshine. a few clouds. warm, muggy. temperatures going up to 91 during the afternoon. similar to today in terms of getting a spotty afternoon thunderstorm in a few locations. could affect areas in to early tomorrow night as well. warm and humid. down to about 75 on wednesday. warm. muggy. 84 though so near normal. 83 on thursday. we have to watch for bigger storms coming and maybe heavier downpours thursday night and potentially lasting in to friday and then if we're lucky we clear out just in time for the weekend. bill evans has much more in the morning.

expected to announce whether it will approve, deny, or postpone the drug. the drug treats hype active sexual desire disorder which affects approximately 1 in 10 women. the pill has failed two previous attempts to bring it to market, some questioning its effectiveness and safety. some creative convicts deployed a fellow jail bird to help them smuggle in drugs. unfortunately for them it shares their talent of getting caught. guards at a prison in costa rica found nearly an ounce of marijuana and cocaine strapped to a pigeon. they say prisoners trained the bird. in the past they've used cats, food, and other methods to bring in illegal drugs. bad night for the yankees. ouch? >> was it? in one way yes. in another way maybe not. it's tough to watch anybody go down with an injury. a real tough one tonight at yankee stadium.
