>> now, new york's number one news. channel 7 eye witness news. gunfire erupts in the lobby of a federal build inning manhattan as a lone gunman kills a security guard. new details on how this chaos unfolded and a family's emotion boils over when their loved one is killed on the job. good evening i'm rob powers in tonight for bill ritter. >> i'm sade baderinwa. police and federal investigators are working to piece together exactly what happened and what led to the shooting. right now the investigation is spanning two states. the scene of the crime at the west village and the home of the shooter in fort lee, new jersey. >> we learned the victim was shot and killed when officials say kevin downing walked in and opened fire. he's a military veteran and former government worker. >> the shooting happened just after 5 tonight. we have two reports tonight.

aj ross is in fort lee with a possible motive. we'll begin with carolina leid at the scene. >> reporter: mr. camara was supposed to finish the shift at 4 this afternoon. he happily agreed to stay on longer because they needed the help. an hour later the shooter walked in and pulled out a gun and shot mr. camara in the face. co-workers say he didn't stand a chance. camara's sister we want as she left their home tonight. camara's brother rushed to the hospital to be with them during this tragic time. >> we just got there. we're going to try to go there and speak to the wife. she's upset. the only thing we ask you, anybody who knows him, to pray for him right now. prayers for him. >> reporter: camara was working here at the federal building in the west village when a

68-year-old fort lee man walked in with two weapons and opened fire just after 5 friday evening. >> as he approached the metal detector in the security screening area, he pulled out a gun and shot the security officer at close range. >> reporter: a heavily armed emergency services unit descended on the area cowering the scene and searching each floor. the fbi is working with homeland security calling it a investigation but it's not being treated as terrorism. they believe just one shooter was involved but are not commenting on the motive or if there are any intended targets. homeland security secretary jay johnson came from new jersey to help with the investigation and give his support to the victims. >> i wanted to be here because this is a federal building and check in on our employees here and to be with those employees in the face of this tragedy. >> reporter: officials pointed

out that mr. camara's death is being treated as a homicide federal officer because his company was contracted by the department of homeland security. reporting live in the west village carolina leid, channel 7 eye witness news. >> thanks, carolina. from manhattan to new jersey where the gunman is from. authorities are camped outside his home in fort lee waiting for a court ordered search warrant. aj ross has new details on the motives. >> reporter: sade, this quiet and tucked away fort lee community has been turned upside down as they're waiting for the search warrant. police don't want us to shine a light in that direction. there is a large police presence and we're learning new information about an ongoing dispute he had with the department of labor. clues that may help them figure out a motive for this vicious crime. >> i heard a helicopter and i saw the police cars.

>> reporter: disbelief and shock blanketed this fort lee community friday night as neighbors came home to crime tape and heavily armed police surrounding the home of 68-year-old kevin downing, the suspected shooter inside this lower manhattan federal building. >> i said hello and good-bye. >> i might have seen him once or twice but i don't know who he is. >> reporter: he is a former employee of the u.s. department of labor and statistics. he has an office in the building. downing claimed he was fired by the department of labor in 1999 for being a whistle blower and disclosing inexcusable public waste. he claimed the agency was blocking him from further employment. >> god only knows what happened in his life or what has happened in his life. we all have stress in our life and we don't know the straw that breaks the camel's back.

the gunman, a 26-year-old moroccan. one soldier reportedly injured. the legionnaire bacteria surfaces at a high school in yonkers. riverside high school was shut down when the cooling tower tested positive for the bacteria. it was disinfected and the build issing back open. governor cuomo order every cooling tower be tested. a section of the new york state thoroughway closed after a horrific crash that killed two people. a tractor trailer, two box trucks and another vehicle crashed earlier today. officials say one of the box trucks lost control while attempting to pass another vehicle and slammed into a big rig heading south. two people were killed. we know the cause of the massive explosion at a high school in the bronx. investigators say a construction worker lit a match in a gas filled room.

the construction workers are in critical condition and one is in serious after last night's explosion at john f kennedy high school. the workers were installing a gas line in a science lab. thinking it was off he lit the match to test the line. >> i believe this was a mistake and a costly one for the three workers involve and had for everybody else that's been affected. >> i'm confident no student will be in the school unless it's totally safe. >> the building won't be repaired in time for the first day of school. students will be relocated to other buildings. this is not the time to check your 401-k. wall street closing a dismal week of trading. the worst day of losses in five years. the dow closed at 16460. the nasdaq fell 171 points and the s&p dropped 61 points. today the fourth consecutive day of losses. the dow 1000 points.

republican presidential front runner donald trump didn't quite draw the crowd he expected to in alabama tonight. >> we went to the convention center and they can have 10,000 people and we're all set and we're excited and the next day they said too many people we can't put them in. >> before tonight's campaign event trump boasted he would fill a 40,000 feet stadium. turns out about 20,000 people showed up. it was trump's largest campaign crowd so far. now to an eye witness news exclusive. a woman who says she was sexually assault in deed an ambulance by the emt who was supposed to be helping her. thousands have viewed this story. the nypd is investigating and the emt has already been placed on restrictive duty. >> i never would have thought no ambulance would do that. >> reporter: it's not the first time this brooklyn mom was rushed to the hospital during a seizure.

like in the past when two emergency medical workers arrived at her bed sty apartment last saturday she was shaky and not able to speak. she was conscious. these are partial seizures. >> yes. >> reporter: you're still awake? >> i saw everything he did. i heard him when he called my name twice. >> reporter: you were well aware of what was going on? >> i was well aware. >> reporter: she was quickly placed in the ambulance and one ems worker stayed with her while the other one waited outside for advanced life support came. >> then he takes his hand, takes his right hand and put his hand down in my panties and stuck in his hands in my private area. >> reporter: as soon as she got to the hospital she told her mother. soon after a supervisor arrive today interview her about the alleged sexual assault.

she met with investigators of the special victims unit. she asked we not identify her. she felt compelled to tell her story for fear silence would lead to more victims. >> anyone that does that to people, there's something wrong with them. >> reporter: you think it's likely he's done this before? >> yes, i'm quite sure he has. >> reporter: we've confirmed the emt in question and his partner have been placed on restrictive duty having no contact with patients while the fdny looks into the allegations. tell me why you decided to do this. >> i want him to pay for what he did. you don't do that to people. you don't do that. ever since that happened it's been weighing heavy on my mind. >> reporter: the police are looking at surveillance tape to determine if the patient was alone with one of the if so, how long. meantime the emt crew will remain on restrictive duty until

a deadly stabbing in harlem apparently stemming from a fight over an umbrella. eye witness video shows two women tugging on the umbrella this morning outside a mcdonald's at 125th street in lexington avenue. the boyfriend of one of the women jumps in and stabs the other woman in the back. when the victim's boyfriend tried to intervene he was stabbed to death. the female victim is in critical condition. the suspect is charged with assault. this hot weather a perfect time for people to take a dip in the family pool. what if it's not their pool and the family isn't people? it's a family of bears checking out a new jersey backyard and finding it just right. darla miles with our bear facts. >> i've seen him so many times now it's not a surprise anymore. >> there's bears in the pool! >> reporter: until about 24 hours ago, this mama bear and her five cubs were local celebrities in rockaway township, new jersey.

until their video of their backyard pool party went viral. >> i watch it more and more and more and start laughing because it started to become funny. i got a little girl and i can imagine her saying that. >> the baby is going up the slide. >> reporter: the video kind of makes you do a double take as one cub takes to the slide another splashes in the water and another one plays with pool toys just like kids do. brian farrell started spotting them around the neighborhood at neighborhood. size since then. >> reporter: he took this picture of the family in a cherry tree. this photo was taken friday afternoon in the same neighborhood of them rummaging through the trash. street. >> i was over there and the bears are over here. bears are taking over. >> reporter: no one really knows exactly where the bears live but the people who live in

this area seem to believe they come down from the mountains behind the softball field. what is shocking, the number of bears. have you seen five cubs before? that's a big litter. >> reporter: do you think you'll go back to the pool? >> it's a possibility. if i had a nice pool to jump in, i'd go back. wouldn't you? >> reporter: rockaway township, new jersey, darla mile sgls yeah, i think the bears will come back and take another dip. >> yes, always make friends with the people with the pool. >> everybody is making their plans for the weekend. saturday is better than sunday? >> saturday is the better day

especially if you're doing swimming. you have plans to go boating. tomorrow is the best day. once we get into sunday things get complicate and had east of the city, connecticut, long island seeing showers and then we see more of that moisture moving in. saturday the best day of the next couple. 77 northeast wind is light and clear skies tonight with clear. normal temperature 182. we had 87 today. 6:12 a.m. will be the sunrise tomorrow. temperatures are in the 60s for monticello and they'll go down to 50s overnight. everybody else slipping in the 60s. anywhere between 65 to 69 looks like that's the number for the overnight lows and the boroughs into the suburbs. sunny and warm tomorrow. great day. slightly above average and slow humidity. clouds and a passing shower coming through parts of the area on sunday and the humidity is back on monday with storms in

the area that day as well. what's happened is the big rains we had late last night and early this morning are part of a cold front stalled off shore. we're on the dry side of this. it'll waiver back and forth and throws hois moisture in our direction as early as sunday afternoon. won't rule out a little bit of light rain for the eastern edge of long island tomorrow. you're that close to the front. by the time we get into sunday afternoon the showers become widespread inland and monday is looking wet. the computer models don't clear us out until late monday. weekend get away cat skills, hampton, jersey shores, same story. saturday is the better day and by sunday we're looking at showers and storms parts of the afternoon mainly. jersey shore gets away with the best of it. there may be clouds lingering sunday afternoon. comfortable over the weekend, especially for the overnight lows tonight and tomorrow.

then we get back to the muggy overnight temperatures. 86 tomorrow starts us off, 84 on sunday with the passing shower. it's humid monday with sticky damp showers and the soaking rain and warm and humid on tuesday. wednesday and thursday look like the best days of the week. temperatures will be in the low 80s there. whatever plans you have over the weekend if you can move them to saturday to be outdoors that's the best bet. we're looking at the tropical storm danny and seeing how that'll affect puerto rico. we'll talk about that tomorrow. >> move plans to saturday. >> and invite me. up next, do people really become more attractive after drinking alcohol?

an art exhibit sdebt accidentally turns into a comic mishap. 250-pound rubber ball, part of an art exhibition in toledo, ohio, got loose in high winds today. that's unreal. workers are chasing it down the street. 15 football it is. it bounced and rolled away. they caught up with the ball two blocks away and luckily nobody was hurt here. everybody was red faced.

a new study is suggesting the beer goggles affect is just a myth. researchers at bristol university asked drinks to rate faces. the findings contradict previous research by the same group of scientists last year. >> that's a heck of a study right there. anthony johnson up next with sports. >> got to follow that. it's a full slate of action with baseball and football on the plate tonight. the yankees counting on their top pitcher to slow the tribe in game two of the series at the stadium. plus the jets trying to get a taste of victory in the preseason.

and he's ready for crunch time. tonight they went to mr. reliable, bartolo colon to start the inning. yoenis cespedes shoots one to left center and he would score. carlos gonzalez blasts one right here. 29th of the season. can you say cespedes? a grand slam. his 21st of the season giving the mets an early 7-1 lead. the rockies wouldn't roll out. bottom of the 4th making it a one run game. cespedes has three home runs as the mets lead in this one, score is 12-8. little bit of history out of houston. mike friers hit a no hitter. he threw 134 pitches to get it done. got former met justin turner swinging to make it official.

3-0, the astros beat the dodgers. football, todd bowles was looking for progression from the jets. gang green fans at the meadowlands, they were looking for the same. would they get same old jets? matt ryan floats one to colin moody. leads to a falcon touchdown. the jets go three and out. he takes it down inside the 5. falcons would go onto score. jet's defense finally shows up. that's leonard williams. he tackles yates for a safety and the jet's offense takes flight when ivory takes it in the house to score. the jets win the first game of the pre-season. final score 30-22. >> tackling was a lot better. they played the run a lot better. we have a ways to go but they took a step today.
