door of a building in lower manhattan last night and fatally shot a security guard before killing himself. the building houses a regional labor. tonight a new jersey congressman comes to downing's defense, representative bill pasquale said downing was a whistle blower who felt he got a raw deal from the bureau of labor statistics. they were searching for anything motive. but so far no clues. now we learn more about the victim idrissa camara, a security guard who was working down. renee stoll is live in soho with the lead story. >> good evening, joe, i talked to the guard's family and friends and they tell me not only

a security officer but he armed guard never talked about his job being dangerous and he never felt that way. and i also found out that he was a great family man where they say he would work here and send money back to his family in the ivory coast. >> reporter: for most of the day friends and family came to the home of 53-year-old idrissa camara. >> we come to share grief with them and support them as much as we can. >> august giving condolences to his wife and four children. >> got to pray. that's all. >> reporter: camara's cousin and leader at the harlem mosque said the family is holding up well. >> great. they're spirit is high. >> reporter: camara was gunned down friday evening while working at this soho federal building. the shooter, kevin downing turned the gun on himself. camara is known as a generous

man from the ivory coast. >> very good man. >> he is everything for us. you guys cannot believe how this guy is nice. >> reporter: it was that kindness that put camara in the wrong spot at the wrong time. he was working extra hours to help out with downing shot him. the president of the local chapter of camara's union came to relay condolences from dozens of camara's co-workers. >> this was a family making the american dream, working hard to make the adopted country their home and now their lives are shattered by this. >> the family tells us camara just buried his father weeks ago and his sister just happened to be visiting here on vacation from africa when all of this tragedy unfolded. tonight his cousin tells me the family will decide where the body will be buried, whether

was bleeding. barely clothed. two queens sanitation workers immediately pulled over when they found this 76-year-old man running toward their truck early saturday. >> i went to see what is going on and he explained to me he was just robbed. >> he told me that somebody had broken into his home and tied him up and beat him up. >> reporter: according to the police, an armed person used a ladder to enter into the victim's home and then let in two other suspects, a male and female who tied up the veteran. they beat the defenseless man with a firearm and stole his cell phone, tv and wallet before running away. >> i felt heart broken for the poor guy. >> reporter: the victim was taken to jamaica hospital for treatment. the neighbors say crimes like this don't happen in this area. >> everybody knows everybody. everybody knows whose car is

here, whose face is here. if we see a stranger we notice it right away. sleeping. >> police are reviewing surveillance video but they can use your help and tips. anyone with information should give them a call. ozone park, queens. a.j. ross. a search for a gunman who shot and killed a taxi driver in newark. it happened before 10:00 last night in the 300 block of frelinghuysen avenue. a passerby spotted him and found him unresponsive. it remains unclear what sparked the shooting. one of his co-workers she noticed an up tick in violence against taxi drivers in the past two months. >> we keep the police reports because i would say at least 10 assaults were drivers. yeah, we're always worried about their safety and we hope that

the mayor does something to help them out. >> they will honor him by tying ribbons on their tax sis. a brawl outside of mcdonald's in harlem. 46-year-old jesus santiago was arrested facing murder and assault charges. a 46-year-old woman remains in critical condition. cent tee yag yoe and female companion fought with the two victims over an umbrella. leaders of north and south korea are holding talks. the meeting in the demilitarized zone comes two days after troops exchanged artillery fire across the border. north korea demands the south stop broadcasting propaganda from loud speak ners the region. the broadcast started after

seoul accused of planting land mines in the neutral zone. britain is investigating an people. a pilot crashed into a road hitting several cars. the pilot and six people on the ground died at the scene, and injured. it happened at the shoreham air show in england. the pilot didn't complete a loop maneuver before the crash. three american contractors are dead following a suicide car bombing in afghanistan. nato says the bomber targeted a convoy traveling through a crowded neighborhood in the country's capital. the blast killed at least 12 people including those three americans and wounded more than 60 others. the taliban denies carrying out the attack despite the group's recent surge in assaults on afghan security forces. indications that vice-president joe biden could throw his hat into the presidential race. mr. biden health a meeting with

friends took down a gunman on board a paris-bound train. >> we didn't know his gun wasn't working or anything like that. spencer just ran anyway and if anybody would have gotten shot it would have been spencer for sure. >> alex is a oregon national guardsman shot the video after he and his friend knocked the attacker unconscious. the friends were on the 300-mile train ride from amsterdam to paris. businessman chris norman was sitting nearby. at about 5:45 he heard a gun shot and saw a man holding an ak47. >> i heard one guy, an american, say go get him. my thought was, okay, i'm probably going to die anyway, so let's go. >> norman got there in time to hold the man down. years old. investigators say he was carrying an assault rifle, a knife and close to a dozen additional cartridges of am mow.

72 in the higher elevations by monticello. 70s on the island and jersey shore. fair-weather clouds out there. a beautiful day. we watch offshore this same front that caused flooding rain especially over long island early friday morning moved offshore and it stalled. it is a stationary front right now. it will try to back in here especially with the help of a little area of low pressure forming near bermuda that will head toward the coast in the next 24 hours. our cloud cover and chance of getting a thunderstorm tomorrow. we have hurricane danny out there east of the leeward islands, 75 mile-per-hour winds. it will weaken into the a tropical storm. this is great news, by the way, for puerto rico which has bb in a drought and now they'll get much needed rain without too much wind. by thursday approaching the bahamas it may be completely

weakened by that time as it moves into kind of a hostile environment. at the most it is probably a tropical depression. here is our futurecast around here. you see the clouds increasing from the east and after mid-thiet there could be a shower or two over parts of long island. by the daybreak tomorrow i do expect a couple of these showers to even work into new york city and during the day tomorrow there could be a shower or thunderstorm at any point. it will be a cloudier day. mainly clear this evening, clouds showing up late, could be a shower east of new york city after midnight. down to 71. variably cloudy tomorrow. shower and thunderstorm around. at any point high of 82. brief shower or two tomorrow night. 72. maybe a shower monday morning and we clear things out. warm humid day, highs in the mid-80s and about another few top 10 days. how about we do that wednesday and thursday and maybe even into friday with lower humidity out there.
