cell phone video capturing the dramatic moments after a casino bus slams in to a passengers climbing out windows. the driver trapped inside a heavy pile of brick. investigators looking in to exactly what caused this destructive crash. good evening at 11:00. i'm bill ritter. >> and i'm sade baderinwa. many recovering tonight

after the wild crash on 63rd avenue and regal park, queens. in the past 10 minutes we got new information from police on how it all happened. >> jim dolan on the scene with new details and information for us. >> you can see workers building a fence around the construction site. nobody will be staying in that building for a while. police just moments ago saying the driver of a car that made a right turn in front of the bus has been issued a summons for making an illegal right turn. that may have caused the driver of the bus to careen out of control, crashing in to that building and taking out the corner. >> reporter: it was pretty quiet and nearly dark by the time they pulled the bus out of the law offices of landers and landers on 63rd avenue, but earlier it was chaos. neighbors pitched in to pull passengers out of a side window of a bus to safety. one by one the rattled passengers were lowered in to the arms of people on the streets below. there were only

five people inside the bus. and getting them out didn't take long. daniel was one of those who helped first with a ladder. >> we put it against the bus, the first window over there. and we opened the window. we were trying to help people down. everybody seemed traumatized. >> were you able to help people out? >> yeah, the bus wasn't really full. >> they were banging against the windows trying to get out because the door to let them out was crushed in. so people in the cars were trying to pry the door open. >> reporter: but the driver was trapped beneath an avalanche of bricks and lumber and firefighters worked to get him out slowly to make sure he wasn't injured more seriously. the resorts casino bus crashed through the building a thunderous explosion of a crash that left six people hurt as medics moved them to area hospitals. the law office was empty when the bus came crashing through. you can see the law books still on the shelf. >> was it just luck that there was nobody there? >> that's right.

>> reporter: the crash left the whole neighborhood shaken. >> we were terrified. >> reporter: fernando soto watched it all happen. >> i thought there was a medical emergency because the traffic was flowing nice. no cars cut him off, no nothing. >> we're back live. police moments ago saying it was not a medical emergency. they're saying the driver of a car that made an illegal right turn in front of the bus may have caused the driver to lose control of the bus and that is what caused all of this they believe, although they've not issued a final report. that's still a long way off. nobody will be staying in that building for a long time to come. jim dolan, channel 7 eyewitness news. breaking news now, he was called the gentle giant of car racing. indy driver justin wilson tonight dying after a freak race accident. just 37, so smart, so popular and deeply

analytical. now deeply mourning, his peers and his sports anchor rob powers is here with the story. >> justin wilson drove anything mountain bikes, he was driving in the poconos when debris from the crash in front of him struck him in the head. justin the denver, colorado. debris breaks off another car and would strike wilson. these are open cockpit cars, no real protection. he was struck in the head, lifted an allentown, pennsylvania hospital. >> anyone who follows our sport knows justin is one of the most well respected, highly regarded and loved people in the entire paddock. >> one of the few, if only guy that really was a friend among everyone in the paddock and competitors and that everyone respected for the way he carried himself. >> seven career indy car

victories, he was a big guy. 6'4", tallest in the series. look for renewed calls for some kind of shield over the cockpits. first indy car driver to die because of an incident wilson leaves behind a wife and two daughters, they're 7 and 5. wilson was 37. now to the dramatic day on wall street. and fears tomorrow could be met with more volatility. at opening bell, things weren't looking good. the dow plunged more than a thousand points, ending down 588 points. wall street's worst day in four years and suffering the most intra-day trading ever. this nose dive is starting to get scary for everyone. >> reporter: for the moment of the opening bell, it was a vicious freefall, the dow plunging at an unprecedented 1,000 points. moments later, stocks clawing back, but then taking another dramatic turn downward. it was a roller

coaster ride that made even the most seasoned nervous. >> we haven't had sort of a temper tantrum in the market for some time. >> reporter: dropping this volatility, heightened concern about a slowdown in china. it had already shaken markets around the world on friday. the massive sell-off started in china last week, driving the u.s. stock market sharply lower. the dow now down 1600 points in five days. the white house trying to calm fears. >> what i would encourage people to evaluate is the ongoing strength and resilience ofofhe u.s. economy. >> reporter: even though stocks are up nearly 60% over the last five years, experts say today's slide was long overdue, experts warning investors not to panic and to hold steady. >> you have to pay attention. i don't know if you can make too many adjustments. >> it's up and down. i just hope it goes up. >> people start to get a little bit panicky and that's the one thing they shouldn't do. >> reporter: by closing bell

the dow was down 588 points. the question tonight, what will tomorrow bring? >> we could get several more days of this. >> and right now chinese stocks continue to tumble in early trading although elsewhere in asia, losses are less severe than analysts had feared after today's dramatic fall. a not guilty plea tonight from a teenager accused of shooting a member of mayor de blasio's security team with a pellet gun. posting $10,000 bail and released after his arraignment. police say he shot the officer with a pellet gun. tonight police released a picture of that gun. the officer not seriously hurt. a dock worker from new jersey tonight facing criminal charges for the death of a coworker. prosecutors say 48-year-old victor bellow was drunk when he was operating a top loader two weeks ago, this at the shipping terminal in elizabeth. he hit and killed coworker judy jones. bellow is

charged with death by auto. his attorney says he will plead not guilty. the teenager accused of killing his father home tonight in the same house where the alleged crime happened. 19-year-old hassan razzaq fitted with an ankle bracelet before leaving rikers island tonight. he walked out free on $1 million bond. police say razzaq stabbed his father in the month last month and will be under constant supervision. >> the judge ordered me to monitor the defendant, ankle bracelet on him and let the court and the da office know his whereabouts, where he goes. >> razzaq's attorney says there was well documented mental, physical, and sexual abuse in the family's home. a huge manhunt in brooklyn tonight for a man who vix sly beat a customer at a neighborhood bodega. the man died hours later. tonight the owner of the bodega speaking out about the senseless violence.

lucy yang in the crown heights section with the latest. >> the manhunt is on tonight for five men believed responsible for this vicious homicide. police have now released some pretty clear surveillance photos which they hope will help lead to an arrest. >> reporter: flowers and a candle were left outside the victim's apartment after 38-year-old michael brown following a violent beating. the attack happened in front of this deli on utica avenue in crown heights. 4:00 saturday morning police say these five men pounced on the victim and i'm told head. help eventually arrived but we're told brown refused treatment and went home a few blocks away. by saturday afternoon an ambulance was called to his house. he was already losing consciousness and moments later he was pronounced dead at the hospital. >> i really wish [ inaudible ] >> it's ridiculous.

who does that? >> very, very friendly. always seeking to help somebody. >> reporter: neighbors tell me brown worked in construction and lived with his fianci. officials believe one of the suspects grabbed the victim's cell phone and told him to come outside the deli if he wanted it back. when the victim stepped out, he was surrounded and attacked. the deli owner who served brown hours before the attack says he wishes he could have helped. >> if i was here, maybe i would stop the people. i was home. >> they don't look familiar? >> no , not at all. >> no word yet on a motive. also hard to say if the victim would have survived if he had immediately. live outside the 77th precinct in brooklyn, lucy yang, channel 7 eyewitness news. questionable morning. some changes moving in and some of us could wake up to storms. meteorologist lee goldberg in the weather center.

is being met with disgust. pictures from the frat house say things like hope your baby girl is ready for a good time, freshman daughter drop-off, and go ahead and drop off mom too. the banners were removed after school administrators stepped in. the fraternity has suspended activities at the university until a full investigation is completed. a group of women claiming tonight they were kicked off a wine tasting train because they're black. 11 members of a black women's book club say they were humiliated when they were escorted off a napa valley wine train in california. train staff claim the women were being too loud and inappropriate for the setting. the women say that's nonsense. >> we were paraded through with all the passengers looking at us, coming up with assumptions as to why this group of 11 african american women were being escorted from this train. >> the train company apologized to the women for being forced off the train.

they say it had nothing to do with race and it's not unusual to ask guests to leave for being too loud. talk about a mess, sewage flowing freely in to an apartment complex in queens and residents telling us while it began last night, the problems have been there for years. and they haven't been fixed. the question for the housing authority, why not? >> my notice says there's water overflowing from the toilet and the tub. >> reporter: a backed up sewer line has caused feces filled water to overflow twice. this mother first noticed the problem again late sunday night. when she called the city housing authority for help, she took hours to get there and only offered a rush cleanup job. >> by the time they got there, everything is flooded.

everything is wet. it stinks. there's feces, cigarette butts. it's disgusting. >> reporter: now close to $5,000 damage of furniture, clothes, and home goods. they're begging for answers along with the new york councilman. >> there's a lack of accountability hoping they can pass it around enough that people get tired chasing it to find out who's really accountable. >> reporter: we were there as workers continued their cleanup of the raw sewage which also seeped in to the basement and community center which is home to a popular children's program. although they're being temporarily relocated as the building gets professionally cleaned, both she and councilman wills are demanding a long-term solution. >> she has taken this and endured it like most people in our community when things like this happen because they continuously happen. >> i don't like it. it's unacceptable. >> we did reach out to the new york housing authority and were told a representative will be put in touch with ms. holmes to

help her file a claim for her damaged property. this building will be put on a preventative plan which means quarterly sewage sweeps which will hopefully prevent future backups. convicted criminals tonight offering a gift to pope francis during his upcoming visit to the u.s. inmates at the philadelphia industrial correctional center hand-carving a wooden chair for the pope. plans to meet with inmates and their relatives during his two-day trip to the city. inmates in another prison will up holster the chair. bad weather moving in through some of the area. >> any time the humidity spikes overnight and a front is nearby, have to watch out for funny business in the morning hours. might be thunderstorms with heavy downpours. good visibility as we look at the empire state building. partly cloudy skies. 78. it's really been a gorgeous evening, showers

getting in to the far northwest suburbs. 87 for the high today. 5 above average . looks like a nice day on tuesday after we get through some of these storms in the morning and midday, humidity starts to decrease early in the day. thunder threat tonight will really go through about midday tomorrow. say it's afternoon for connecticut and long island, midafternoon anyway. then lower dew points as lower humidity kicks in late tomorrow and really sticks in for a while. we're still tracking danny's remnants approaching puerto rico and now erika. highs warm today in the hid and upper 80s. felt great now the humidity starts to spike overnight. right now 75 in andover with a shower nearby. 73 in belmar. tomorrow morning a thunderstorm around. it will be scattered but a couple heavy downpours. still have to allow for the threat through midday. take it through the afternoon for connecticut and long island.

humidity starts to back off and more clearing skies in the afternoon. should still be able to get in to the mid 80s during the afternoon. right now our focus on sussex and orange county. a heavier shower west right now. it's making slow progress but now making progress to the east. jeff smith will be covering for bill evans tomorrow morning. there's a bermuda high forming, a storm offshore. everything is moving slowly. once these storms move, they're slow to move out during the morning hours. during the afternoon mainly north and east of new york city then pulling away. so some storms to start through midday, afternoon east then that dry weather will come in on wednesday and basically plant roots here as we go through the rest of the week in to the weekend. these are remnants of danny. not worried about winds. moves over to

puerto rico with beneficial rains. erica has formed, looking formidable with 45-mile-per-hour winds. it's a tropical storm. at this point looks like it's going to remain tropical storm status and take a similar track to danny. and maybe still covering this over the weekend as it approaches the bahamas but still a tropical storm. not anticipated to see that rapid strengthening we saw with danny that brought it up to a category 3. warm and muggy 7:00 in the morning. a shower or thunderstorm. tomorrow clouds will give way to more sunny breaks as the afternoon moves on. more comfortable, less humid tomorrow night. what an amazing week after we get through tomorrow. low to mid 80s. low humidity. take it right in to the weekend. sunday is the first time humidity creeps up. the last weekend of august looking fantastic. jeff smith will have an update tomorrow morning. coming up next, a flu shot that works for the rest of your life? >> plus right back in the

good enough for the win. they get the win tonight at the stadium. 11 days ago jets quarterback geno smith had surgery to repair that broken jaw from the result of a punch from a now former teammate. he did some light work on the side. but he does have a jaw full of plates and screws and won't do anything big for a while. expected back in game shape in late september but smith now at least back on the field doing what he can. >> that's good news.
