eyewitness news reporter tim fleischer is live in the newsroom with the details. tim in. >> reporter: the community has come together in an outpouring of grief. today they are being remembered. returning to their morning news program, those who watched in horror the brutal killing of alison parker and photographer adam ward made contribute with a moment of silence. >> they are choking back tears and their emotions show but they are covering the news. >> reporter: station general manager jeffrey marks was joined by alison's boyfriend, chris hearst sharing their memories on abc's "good morning america." >> i want everyone to know she was not only a fantastic journalist and well on her way to a remarkable career but she was good at everything she attempted. >> reporter: alison and adam ward had just started the live interview early wednesday morning when the gunman,

identified as vester flanagan opened fire killing alison and adam and wounding vicky gardner. >> it's senseless that her life and adam's life were taken by a crazy person with a gun. >> reporter: police say flanagan purchased the gun legally days after the recent churches killings in charleston. he sent abc news a lengthy fax in which he listed grievance, discrimination. >> i am not going to rest until i see something get done here. >> reporter: memorials and prayer vigils are taking over this community. 27-year-old adam ward was engaged to marry a producer at the station in the control room at the moment of the shooting. parker just 24 years old was in love with her boyfriend, anchor chris hurst. >> a pain that is really real for me now. the station is resilient. her family is resilient. they are strong. we will be back, folks.

>> reporter: in another show of support, other supporters and anchors came from their sister stations to help cover the news. shirleen. >> tim, thank you. you can find more information about the victims of the shooting in virginia on our web site, abc7ny and our eyewitness news app. also new at noon, police on long island searching for two people wanted in a heist at an armored car company that resulted in the death of $1.8 million. in all three men broke through concrete walls and penetrated a vault at the loomis armored car hicksville. they caught one of the people kemberly richardson has the other two. darkness, these suspects thought they would get away with what is described as the largest heist nassau county police have seen. this is loomis armored inc. it's covered with security cameras.

what makes you wonder, was this an inside job. detectives found bags of money in the trunk of a car. 1.8million. inside the building there was a total $20 million. inside the vault they were able to break in to. up to four men were involved at this burglary. one is in custody. edward medina was caught red handed with nearly $2 million in cash after an officer on routine patrol spotted the 53- year-old acting suspiciously in the back parking lot of this company inside the trunk of his car, $1.8 million. it was sunday, august 16th at 10:20 in the evening when detectives say the suspects are captured by surveillance cameras, casing the building then tampering with what appeared to be the security system. using hydraulic and scissor jacks they pride open a door then broke through doors and concrete and eventually got

into the vaulted to the mother lode. >> this particular case, to put it in perspective, you look at the size and magnitude of the amount of money kept in that location and it is a very sophisticated system to keep people out. we have video. the video shows the kids were all masked while they were committing the burglary. in this particular case, they did everything they can to foil the recovery of any evidence. but the investigation is ongoing. >> reporter: now, eventually, when he was spotted, medina got in a black jetta and took off. but that officer was able to stop him and the suspect surrendered. back live, medina has a ridge past, ten arrests. he was out on parole. again at this hour, police are looking for three others, several others tied to the heist and they are offering a $25,000 reward. at this point police are not yet releasing the video that

captures the suspects back here casing the joint. live in long island, kemberly richardson, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> kemberly, thank you. on long island, a man is accused of leading police on a chase in a stolen jeep. a trooper spotted michael kessler using a cell phone driving on the southern state parkway. he tried to get away driving up to 100 miles per hour. police say he was arrested after jumping out of the moving vehicle in sea ford. investigators then discovered he had stolen the jeep. on staten island, a construction worker is recovering after falling in a trench this morning. newscopter 7 was over the con edison facility as firefighters carefully lifted the man out of the trench. no immediate word what he was doing when he fell. the fdny said his injuries were minor. >> reporter: investigators are trying to determine what caused a huge fire in plainfield, new jersey. it started after 2:00 a.m.

in a home on east second street then spread to a house next door. no one was hurt. investigators say one of the homes appears to be occupied. police in brooklyn are investigating the death of an 8- year-old girl killed crossing a street. police say jadann williams was trying to cross the street in flatbush. she stepped out from behind a double parked delivery truck and was hit by an s.u.v. the driver stayed at the scene and was not arrested but the death has upset community members. >> this is not a highway. this is a side street for kids to be playing. they can't play inside of the house, they have to come outside. >> some good samaritans tried to save her performing cpr but she suffered head injuries and later died at the hospital. police got a look at two men they say are behind a dozen burglaries in manhattan. this is surveillance video of the two. the most recent was monday inside an office knowledge on west 46th street where they took off with laptops and

electronics. investigators say it was the 13th burglary since may. stocks surged on wall street extending the recovery from massive sell office earlier in the -- sell offs earlier in the week. suggestions that the federal reserve has put the brakes on plans to raise interest rates. here is a live look at the big board. the numbers are early but right now it's looking like 289 points. we are tracking tropical storm erika. right now it's bringing heavy rain to parts of puerto rico and causing flooding in some areas of the caribbean. a house collapsed in flash flooding in the lesser antilles. this is the island of dominica. the storm could intensify before it reaches the florida coast. people in west palm are preparing. the local power company has crews on standby. meteorologist amy freeze is in for bill evans. she is tracking the storm for us. amy?

>> this afternoon there is a cone of uncertainty which part of florida or the atlantic states will be affected by erika. here is the satellite. we go to where this is the location now of erika; the path of the storm. the national hurricane center will take all the information and predict hourly where it will go. right down the middle of the county of uncertainty. it will go over san juan and the leeward islands and head to miami. but the thing you have to remember is that cone of uncertainty gets wider the further we get from the time of the storm making it close to florida. this is monday into tuesday. look how the cone of uncertainty continues to spread. the reason for that, right now erika will be passing over an area that is difficult for it to intensify. right now 50 to 60 miles per hour winds. it will stay that way for a

b for the second time this week the state of louisiana is remembering a law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty. henry nelson was shot to death in the town of sunset. the incident left a woman dead and two others in the hospital. officer nelson's death came two days after the shooting death of louisiana state trooper stephen vincent. lawmakers for a former ohio police officer says he can't get a fair trial in cincinnati. the attorneys are filing to have it moved to another county because they say media coverage contaminated the jury pool.

video from his body camera showed him shooting a man during a traffic stop in july. he has pled not guilty. authorities in connecticut are investigating a deadly accident involving a work crew. police say a man was killed when his truck toppled over in hartford. the crew was inspecting the road for the department of transportation. it's unclear how the truck became unbalanced and fell. no one else was injured. rosie o'donnell's daughter is no longer living under her roof. she went to wisconsin with her birth mother. this is days after 25-year-old steven sheerer was arrested and accused of sending the teenage girl nude pictures. she was found in sheerer's home in new jersey last week. a rapper from new jersey is back home to put on a show. he will perform a free concert this afternoon just for students in manage high schools

firefighters in southern california got an unexpected shower after a car crashed into a hydrant. the geyser of water went 25 feet in the air. it took crews a half hour to get the water shut off. no injuries in the crash but upsetting scene for people experiencing a massive drought watching the water go to waste. >> that water is powerful. amy freeze joins us. picture perfect. >> gorgeous day. i smoke out between the shows. >> good girl. >> and did a walk around. when i came back in. >> first of all, you came back in. >> i did come back. david looked at me and said are

a real fine finish to the weekend. then the opposite side of the high pressure system. temperatures will crank up. we will see near 90 saturday and sunday. expect it to be pleasant. a few clouds coming and going. tonight clear skies. that will allow the temperatures to go from the 50s in the city to 6 s. accuweather seven-day forecast, we will have the get away forecast, the catskills, hamptons and jersey shore, the numbers and high temperatures to expect in those locations. we rebound big time with the temperatures going from low to mid-90s to the 90s monday, tuesday and wednesday flirting with the hot temperatures. that is more typical of what we would associate august with. i will take the next two days and savor them. >> you can deliver that forecast in a sweat suite, no matter what. >> in a few minutes, a little more on the weekend forecast

wait unt swallowed by a sinkhole, road rage mystery solved and kitten emergency, some of the stories caught on camera and caught our attention. we begin with a heart-stopping moment in northern china. you will see as people standing at a bus stop are suddenly swallowed up by a sinkhole. at least four people went crashing down into the hole. you can see that one person was hanging on to the side. thankfully no one was seriously hurt in that accident. a driver's dash-cam video helped turn a highway crash into a road rage arrest in phoenix. a man drives aggressively tailgating another car on a busy highway. he speeds up and stops and opens his door in the middle of traffic. he then swerved and collided with another car. at first police got conflicting reports about the crash. but this dash-cam video from another car showed it was no simple fender bender.

they arrested him on charges of aggressive driving. a kitten in california trapped in a dangerous spot. the kitten's cries could be heard from the engine come a apartment -- compartment of a car at a mcdonald's parking lot. the fire department was able to get the kitten to safety. the kit ken now goes by the name mcnugget. he will be going up for adoption after getting a clean bill of health from the vet. >> i got a feeling mcnog -- he will have a lot of people wanting to take him home. the holiday shopping season may be here sooner than you may expect. walmart is kicking off the season two weeks earlier. tomorrow the layaway program begins. 40,000 items will be available in the payment plan. that is about 20% more than last year and the big feature will be toys tied to the upcoming star wars movie. well, there is a new

prosecutors released new details in a devastating crash on the southern state parkway that claimed the lives of a father and his two young children. >> authorities are saying o'neil sharp junior was driving drunk when he hit the car causing it to burst into flames. n.j. burkett has the details. >> reporter: outside the suffolk district attorney's office in hauppauge where the d.a. is holding a news conference at this hour. we have wondered for weeks what it was that lead up to that horrifying crash that killed a father and his two young children. now that picture is a lot clearer today. prosecutors revealed that shiane richards was driving up to 95 miles per hour on the southern state parkway that night, that he blew past o'neil sharp and prosecutors say sharp, who was allegedly drunk, decided he would catch up to him at speeds estimated to be

120 miles per hour. well, the result, dave, as we all know, was a catastrophe. o'neil sharp plowed into the back of the victim's car, propelling it into the -- over the divider into the opposite lanes of the southern state parkway. the man was killed along with his son and daughter. what is more, the d.a. says sharp and his friends did nothing to help the victims. >> at the time when dying people needed help the most, the defendant dance, some of them, literally stood by watching the family, children and dad perish. they displayed no concern for the victims of their actions who were trapped in that burning vehicle screaming for help. >> contrary to the representations that is were made, mr. sharp was actually rendering aid to other

individuals in the accident, individuals who did require hospitalization as a result of this accident. >> reporter: and sharp's attorney is denying that his client was drunk. prosecutors are saying his blood alcohol level was .06 at the time of his arrest which was four hours after the crash. they have now done laboratory tests and extrapolated that to indicate that his blood alcohol level was actually .12 at the time of the crash, far above the legal limit. his attorney is denying that. we will have much more on this developing story coming up at 5:00 tonight. live in hauppauge long island, n.j. burkett, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you. new at noon, a robbery suspect that escaped from police in newark is back behind bars. officers arrested michael majet at his home this morning. he was arrested yesterday on robbery and weapons charges. he told officers he was injured

and was taken to the hospital for examination. that's where officials say he got away from officers guarding him. in new jersey, police need the public's help identifying two people wanted for robbery. surveillance video shows them taking a woman's pocketbook at the food town supermarket august 20th. the woman's credit cards were used shortly afterwards. investigators know the two women were driving a large black s.u.v. a young firefighter in new jersey is free on bail after being charged with calling in more than a dozen false alarms himself. 18-year-old justin tran joined the volunteer unit this summer. investigators say the fake calls began last month. as for a motive -- >> when he was interviewed by our detectives, he said he was looking to -- he was a probationary fireman, new to the department and was trying to get experience. >> he is charged with causing a

false public al later. long awaited conclusion into the cause of the crash of mail flight in -- malaysian flight in the ukraine will be released in the fall. dutch safety board, which is leading the international investigation says it will release the final report october 13th. western authorities believe the boeing 777 was shot down by a missile. closing arguments are underway in the high profile rape case in new hampshire involving a former prep student one day after the 19-year-old told the jury he did not sexually assault a younger student. we have more on what he said happened that night. >> reporter: this morning the jury hearing about the humiliating rumor mill that began after an encounter between a 15-year-old girl and a senior at new hampshire's prestigious st. paul prep school.

the girl insisting it was rape. the 19-year-old telling the jury it was not. >> she giggled. i giggled. it was, you little bit. i thought she was having a great time. >> he said he liked the new 16- year-old accuser who listened to his testimony from the front courtroom upset. during his testimony, he showed jurors how she raised his arms sweatshirt. >> did she say anything? >> no. >> did she do anything? >> no, she didn't. >> reporter: he said they rolled around kissing and just as he was putting on protection, decided against having sex with her. >> i thought to myself, maybe we shouldn't do this. it wasn't my intention going into the night having sex. >> prosecutors reminding him he told his friends he did have sex with the girl, part of 119 facebook messages he deleted. >> during closing arguments,

the defense attorney told the jurors the prep school failed the children by tolerating a, quote, senior salute tradition in which older students hook up graduating. he testified that the accuser the tradition. the jurors could deliberate as early as this afternoon. in austria, police found what they believe to be dead migrants inside an abandoned truck. the truck parked on the shoulder of a highway near the hungarian border has at least 20 and as many as 50 decomposing bodies inside. the state of the body has made it difficult to say the exact amount of bodies. in vienna, european leaders are meeting to come up with a plan to deal with the migrant crisis. the deaths have prompted some to call for a crackdown on human traffickers.

the terrifying ordeal. an abc news exclusive. we are hearing from the 12-year- old boy hit by a small plane as it made an emergency landing on a beach in california. >> unbelievable. incredible survival. >> reporter: for the first time since this plane crashed into a crowded beach on july 4th, nicholas fair who was hit by the wing is speaking out. >> what was the last thing you remember? walking in the water. >> yeah. i was kind of transitioning to skim boarding and then i guess the plane just came down. >> we have one plane down at the water's edge. >> reporter: watch is the single-engine plane bounced on the surf, tumbling on the hitting nicholas in the head. >> we thought nick died. we thought the plane was on top of him.

he started to move and then he was alive, he is alive. >> reporter: the pilot was uninjured but nicholas needed help. shocked bystanders rushing in to hold him steady until paramedics arrived. >> i remember walking up going to the ambulance and the hospital. >> reporter: despite a concussion and fractured skull bone that required surgery, he stayed in the hospital four days. his recovery, amazing. his new nickname miracle dude something he could do without. >> i don't like the name. i'm just another person that got hit by a plane. >> reporter: in a show of support, 12 of his buddies shaved their heads as well. it. awkward. >> reporter: happy for friends like his and first responders who worked to keep him alive after the terrifying crash.
