suspect did die when he was hit by a newark police car. we will show you what the scene looks like out here. this is on hawthorne avenue. it's a big crime scene expanding several blocks here in this area. newscopter 7 has been over the scene since very early this morning. now, let's show you what they have. police used tear gas grenades to get the last two suspects to surrender after they barricaded themselves in a house on west runion street. newscopter 7 was overhead. as the suspects surrendered, they were surrounded by officers on the scene and taken into custody. a total of six juveniles were involved. now, this crime wave began with a carjacking at 6:41 this morning. there were several subsequent crimes including a robbery and shooting and in each case the suspects were in the stolen silver jaguar. newark police were in pursuit when they jumped out on hawthorne avenue. one suspect that died was hit

by a newark police car. three others were quickly apprehended and the final two were flushed out of the house. >> right now it looks like they are involved. they have a carjack vehicle they are operating. the same car identity was given out for a shooting and a robbery in and around this area. that is being investigated right now. so -- >> reporter: we also understand that the person, the victim, the victim of the carjacking was also injured. once again, we talked about the fact that a person was running through the scene screaming a family member may have been involved, may have been the victim that was struck by the newark police car. we will follow that this afternoon to find out exactly what has been taking place. a total of six juveniles involved. the person killed when they were hit by the newark police car has not been identified. that is the latest live anthony johnson, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you, anthony. new at noon, we are hearing from the woman that survived a shocking hit and run caught on

camera in the bronx. a driver backed into her knocking her to the ground. he stepped out to check on her but then drove off. darla miles just spoke to the victim. she is in the mott haven section with that report. darla? >> reporter: that 51-year-old grandmother was crossing the street right here when she was hit. she said the driver stopped, yelled at her then disappeared. >> he got upset at me. said i was backing up, didn't you see me. i said no. he said get up. i told him i couldn't. i was in pain. >> reporter: you would think i'm sorry or are you okay would be the first words spoken by the man that backed into this woman then stopped to get out of his car. >> he got out of the car. i heard him on the phone. he said i hit a woman. i will be right there. then he got in the car and left. at that point i don't know. one of my neighbors told me he left. >> reporter: not only no apologizes, the driver stands

their briefly, appears to wave it off then takes off. this was two weeks ago near jackson and east 149th street in the mott haven section of the bronx as the grandmother of three was preparing to take her oldest grandson to the pool at 10:30 a.m. >> the car was double parked. it wasn't moving at all when i crossed the street. when i crossed, that's when he backed up and hit me. >> reporter: she was struck by the honda on her left side but her right leg took the brunt after the impact through her down on to the hard concrete street. >> i was in shock. i couldn't believe i got hit by a car. i was in shock. i was on the floor crying and i couldn't believe it. >> police put out the surveillance video because they know this is a gray honda. you cannot see the license plate clearly in the surveillance video. if you recognize the driver or that car, call crimestoppers at 1-800-577-tips. reporting live in the mott haven section of the bronx, darla miles, channel 7 eyewitness news.

warmest day of the week is thursday ahead of a front that will be pushing in by then. one thing to bring your attention to, we have an air quality alert for the entire state of new jersey from 11:00 a.m. today. pollution levels are high. avoid activities where you breath heavily outdoors, strenuous exercise, especially during the hottest time of the day. big bridge of respect smothering the eastern half of the country. that's why we are hot and humid. today up to the low 90s. heading to the beach, closer to the coast, you will stay stuck in the mid-80s. relief there. 83 montauk. 86 belmar and, of course, add in the humidity and it will make it feel like it's between 90 and 95 degrees at times. we will tell you when the relief is coming and how much that means in your full accuweather forecast in a few minutes. david? >> thanks, jeff. the heat and lack of rain is having a consequence. some in new jersey are being

asked to cut back on water usage during the heat wave. united water says the reservoirs have dropped below 50% of capacity. new jersey reporter toni yates has more. toni? >> reporter: you know what, david, united water says this august was the driest august it has seen in a long, long time. you don't even have to climb up the water towers and tap on the tank. we will show you in a second how dry everything is. take a look at that stream. it's very, very low. now, to the video, this is especially what united water is saying. can we please, please, please put the lawns on the back burner for a while, please. the company says it's operating with reservoirs at 45% water capacity and this is what that looks like on the ground. you see how low the water is. and all that lush green is land that is usually under water. this heat wave makes matters much worse in every way possible because we tend to use

more, there is evaporation factor and no rain in the immediate forecast. voluntary conservation efforts. here is what you can do to help right now. >> we would like them to restrict outdoor water usage, stop water lawns for the moment, washing cars outside. and there are other things to do inside the house, pay attention to how long you are showering and make sure you are running the washing machine and dishwasher at full capacity instead of short loads. that will save water, too. but it's the outdoor usage that we are concerned about. >> reporter: very good. voluntary restrictions so they won't have to do mandatory restrictions if every household and every business says, look, we will cut back on the showers, cut back on the lawns. all of that united water says helps immediately. for now live here in norwood, toni yates, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> toni, thank you. a woman who escaped from

police custody has been caught in manhattan. investigators say 23-year-old tiffany neumann was rearrested at a relative's house. she escaped from the nypd and new york presbyterian hospital sunday when an officer stepped away from her to use the bathroom. they took her to the hospital after she claims she was pregnant. originally arrested on theft charges, she faces additional charges. we know that a fast-moving fire in the bronx was started by careless the fire broke out in a garage after 4:00 a.m. it grew to eight alarms in eight minutes tearing through two homes. low water pressure problems made it difficult to battle the flames and keep it from spreading to two adjacent homes. residents say they were jolted awake by screams of fire. >> i woke up, i looked at my --

i looked out the window in the back and i see flames of fire. i had to go outside and run downstairs. >> one firefighter was treated for a minor injury but no residents were hurt. turning to wall street, a new sign of weakness in china's economy. >> i think i will take that. weakness in china's economy has sent global stock markets lower. admit morning the dow was down 300 points. the bad news, the chinese manufacturing index fell to a three-year low. right now the dow is down 16,175. that is 352 points at this time. in new jersey, two former day care center workers are being accused of getting children to fight. union county prosecutors are charging 22-year-old erica kenny of cranford and 28-year- old jenise white from rosedale with endangering the welfare of a child.

faces assault charges because of this. police say alex marquez pushed a student off a rooftop at bridgewater state university at a party earlier yesterday. the woman had been dancing and people on the ground were telling her to jump. her injuries are minor. in massachusetts, a 12-year- old girl caught a suspect breaking into her family's home on her camera. she was home alone when she saw the man in the red shirt trying to get in. she hid in a closet, called 911 then snapped video and a photo of the suspect. police used her images to track down 53-year-old clinton joyce. he is charged with breaking and entering. a police officer is being called a hero after saving a woman from a burning car in texas. the officer saw the car crash on a highway in mesquite. he grabbed a fire extinguisher and ran to help. to get the woman out, he had to get in the burning car. he managed to pull her free with the help of bystanders and they got her out just before,

as you can see, the car engulfed in flames. that's what you call a hero. >> he is a good send. an urgent call to save a baby but looks can be deceiving. police in oakland, california, rush to the scene when they received a report of a baby left in a car seat. officers didn't hesitate to smash the window of the car. that's when they realized it was actually a life like baby doll strapped in the car seat. it's not clear why the doll was in the seat. police have not said if they talked to the owner of the car. they have a bill to fix the mirror -- the window. actor tom hanks is responding to a big social media push by a high school in california to get him to come to homecoming. students chose tom hanks movies as the them for their event on october 8th.

33-year-old kathleen culver and 23-year-old sarah dawber. police aren't saying how they became aware of the allegations but they say in one instance,ing these women allegedly force fed an 18-month- old child until he or she vomited. when detectives arrested culver and dawber last week, they were tending to children ranging from 4 months to 18 months. both culver and dawber are employed at teachers. meryl tish says she is disturbed by the allegations. >> these are allegations and, you know, everyone is entitled events. if it turns out that there is any truth to this, it would be deeply disturbing. >> reporter: the new york state office of children and family services is still continuing their investigation into this meanwhile, detectives in southampton are asking anyone

injunction from a federal judge that is point less. no one can force her to do her job. she can continue to deny us and treat us like second class citizens. >> davis and her deputy have federal court thursday. they could be fined or jailed for contempt in court. she insists her religious beliefs prohibit her from issuing the licenses. the family kate steinly's parents want justice after the sent where their daughter was shot in the back on a san francisco pier. among those named in the suit, u.s. bureau of land management. the gun used by francisco sanchez was stolen from an agent's car. also named the sheriff who released sanchez from jail despite a request from immigration officials say he be -- that he be turned over.
