a community known for its laid back, easy style of living, this important on lockdown. >> all because of the shooting death of this man, long time fox lake illinois lieutenant joseph gliniewicz known around town as g.i. joe. they've been looking for three men blamed for his death. local schools closed today as the hunt intensifies. abc's bazi kanani with details. >> reporter: s.w.a.t. tees descend on a suburban neighborhood, armed police moving through the streets on rooftops and in backyards with canines. >> send everybody you possibly can. officer is down. >> reporter: the massive manhunt continues this morning for three armed suspects after veteran police officer joe gliniewicz was gunned down. the attack just before a.m. tuesday when gliniewicz reported seeing three suspicious people in an industrial part of fox lake, illinois, about 60 miles north of chicago.

police last heard from gliniewicz when he radioed to say he was chasing them. >> male white and a male black fled from scene taking the officer's sidearm and pepper spray, shots were fired. >> reporter: gliniewicz was a 32-year veteran of the force just weeks from retirement. a father of four. >> tonight not only did fox lake lose a family member, i lost a very dear friend. >> reporter: he is now the fourth officer in less than two weeks slain on duty. in harris county, texas, friday, a deputy was shot 15 times at a gas station while fueling his car. and in louisiana, funerals last week for a trooper shot in the head while trying to help a stranded driver and for another officer shot while responding to a reported stabbing. in this latest case in illinois, area schools remain closed during the intense search for three men considered armed and dangerous. bazi kanani, abc news,

washington. and in the political world, an aument out ad war is breaking out in the race for the white house with dueling spots from jeb bush and donald trump. >> trump has released an ad mocking bush's comments that illegal immigration is a quote act of love and yesterday the bush campaign fired back with an ad using trump's own words against him. >> i lived in new york city and manhattan all my life. my views are different if i lived in iowa. >> reporter: with bush trailing they'll say he'll be more aggressive. trump fired back tweeting yet another weak hit by a candidate with a faying campaign. will jeb sink as low in the poll polls as the others who have gone after me? and carly fiorina now has a better chance to be part of the next republican debate. cnn changed the criteria for which ten will be on stage set for two weeks from today. the kentucky county clerk refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples is

running out of options. on monday the supreme court refused to intervene on her behalf. tomorrow she faces a judge. abc's alex perez has more. >> under whose authority are you not issuing licenses? >> reporter: a tense standoff in a small kentucky town, the county clerk, kim davis, refusing to issue any marriage licenses because of her religious objection to same-sex marriage. david moore and david ermold together 17 years trying to get a license from davis ever since the supreme court made marriage a right nationwide getting turned away again. >> she needs to give us the application. >> reporter: and again. >> still waiting. >> reporter: davis telling the courts she was ekzing her right to religious freedom but the supreme court refusing to intervene on behalf. >> you absolutely had disrespected us. >> you're treating us like second class sit dens saying we don't have the same rights as you do.

would you do this to an interracial couple? >> a man and a woman, no. >> reporter: the clerk insisting she is standing up for her beliefs. >> i simply told you all i'm willing to face my consequences awe you will face your consequences when it comes time for judgment. >> not everybody believes what you believe. >> reporter: davis in a statement saying to issue a marriage license which conflicts with god's definition of marriage with my name is fixed to the certificate would violate my conscience. it's not a light issue for me. it is a heaven or hell decision. david moore and david ermold promise to keep coming back until they can get a marriage license. >> if we go to another county we're saying it's okay to discriminate against us. >> reporter: alex perez, abc news, morehead, kentucky. today president obama wraps up his trip to alaska with a visit to the arctic making him the first president to visit there while in office. yesterday he underscored his campaign to fight climate change

by hiking on a glacier. also today he'll meet with local fishermen and speak at a school. the calendar may say september. it's definitely still summer in the east. it feels like july from the midwest to new england with high heat and humidity and temperatures will stay high enough to make it an official heat wave. >> the heat is sticking at least for another day or two depending on your location. look at some of the numbers. back to the 10 to 15 degrees above average range for some folks and look at the september outlook from the climate prediction center. that ridge staying in place, now, this is the probability of being above average. it could be a half degree or ten degrees just giving you an idea it will be warmer than average. ginger zee, abc news, new york. >> folks headed to cape cod beaches are being warned about sharks. dozens of great whites have been spotted just 50 feet offshore. some of them in shallow water. lifeguards are now calling for

higher towers, purple watch flags possibly even a spotter plane. beachgoers are being warned to stay away from seals, a favorite shark meal. three men on their way to the international space station and lifted off from kazakhstan. when their capsule gets to the station friday there will be nine people on board. it'll be the first time in nearly two years that so many humans have been in space. hope they stocked up on food. >> i wish them the best. it is official. all day breakfast at mcdonald's. going nationwide. >> plus, a new police shooting under scrutiny. deputies draw their weapons after a suspect appears to obey orders. caught on camera. a dramatic explosion at a construction site. a worker right in the middle of it all.

well, these young bears spotted about a dozen miles from downtown los angeles. they're having a grand old time wrestling chasing each other around and witnesses say the adorable high jinks continued for several minutes before the bears eventually ran off presumably to find mom. speaking of l.a. the city is back in the race for the 2024 summer olympics. that pursuit ended when boston was selected to represent the u.s. beantown bailed out leaving l.a. to pick up the proverbial torch. if l.a. wins it would be the third time hosting the games following those in 1932 and 1984, the winner won't be announced for another two years. a possible turning point for wall street. all signs pointing to a positive open this morning. stock futures showing some much needed advances. that would follow another steep sell-off on wall street yesterday. traders were spooked by more

reports about china's economy slowing more than previously thought. all three major averages lost about 3%. it's already been a calm day of trading in asia and europe. a major warning from the fda about powdered caffeine. the agency sent letters to the five distributors of the substance, saying that the products put consumers at risk. a teaspoon of caffeine powder is about equal to 28 couples of coffee. the fda says it's very easy to overdose. the letters follow the overdose deaths last year of two young men. consumer advocacy groups want them banned. you can soon get breakfast all day at mc. as of october 6th the chain is doing away with the midmorning cutoff. operators voted in favor of the move. they were testing in markets for months. we're hoping hashbrowns and the egg mcmuffin will. >> big news.

in effect for all hawaiian beaches facing east. tropical storm ignacio is generating waves as high as 18 feet. swells expected to arrive today from jimena. it closed beachfront roads. roads in the southwest may be closed by flooding. this morning drivers should watch out for wet roads along the texas gulf coast. the northwest and nearly all of florida. there may also be scattered showers in the upper midwest and ohio valley. if you're flying, airport delays are likeliest in houston. there are calls for prosecutors in san antonio to release a second video of a fatal police shooting. >> the first shows a man with one arm raised and the other obscured by a telephone pole. the deputies fired multiple times and faying to provide life-saving measures for three minutes. abc's matt gutman spoke to the sheriff. >> what do you think of the conduct of your officers? >> well, certainly it is disturbing, it's cause for concern. and the important thing is that

we look at all of the evidence. >> the fbi is now monitoring the case. a san antonio newspaper reports that police radio traffic indicated the victim had mentioned suicide by cop. >> another scandal for pro wrestling. former star jimmy schnooka has been charged in the death of his girlfriend 30 years ago. now 72, he was arrested yesterday in pennsylvania. he beat the young woman in a motel then left her to die. they say. he's recovering from stomach cancer surgery. authorities in phoenix trying to determine if the city has a highway sniper. four vehicles shot at on interstate 10 within 48 hours. bullets struck three cars on saturday and another one on monday. a 1-year-old girl was cut by shattered glass after the bullet struck the suv she was in. police are also investigating possible highway snipers in michigan and colorado. well, terrifying moments on

a construction site in california. this worker starts to climb out of the underground, popping noises can be heard and then an explosion. the man was saved from being scalded as co-workers pulled him out. the cell phone video taken last year is now the center of a dispute between santa clara county and a contractor. more college students now smoke marijuana daily an cigarettes. a study says nearly 6% of the students get high every day. that's the highest rate since the survey began 35 years ago. the survey more of today's students don't think marijuana is dangerous. drug use in general was also up. drinking is down. a guy who says he's a baseball player from cuba is hanging out in l.a. hoping to get his chance to impress the dodgers. he has been camping outside dodger stadium for nearly three weeks and says he's not leaving until he gets a chance to show the team what he can do on the feel. so far no comment from the team
