now, new york's number one news. channel 7 eyewitness news. tonight, the wreckage of a small plane sitting in a soccer field in new jersey. investigators try to figure out why it crashed. i'm bill ritter. >> and i'm sade bederinwa. the plane ended up not far from an apartment complex. they knew they were in trouble, then suddenly, the engine died. >> then the plane crash landed into a grove of trees. eyewitness news reporter at the scene for us tonight with new details and how close this came to being a deadly disaster. josh. >> bill, sade, this is really very close to that. you can see where the plane wound up right there on the

edge of a giant public soccer field that at the end of the school day is usually teaming with kids, but police say the skill of that pilot, that is what led that plane to wind up in those trees. averting tragedy on the ground. >> investigators spent all night crawling over the wreckage. >> all of a sudden, it was terror. >> the community center watched in shock. >> it barely cleared the tree line. >> as the crippled plane crashed to the ground. >> you can see the propeller, it was not moving. >> he was looking for a place to land. >> by then, air traffic control was desperately hunting for the small plane flown by two coast guard volunteers, they made an urgent call for help. >> november 758 delta kilo, we are experiencing engine eruptness. >> we are trying to get -- lost

the engine completely. going to make an emergency landing. >> other small aircraft rushed to the plane's last known position, among them, news copter7. >> take it directly to the gw. >> it was already too late. >> apparently, he had enough control of the plane to steer that empty field. >> there was a big bang. he hit it hard. >> what i thought was, not the kids. >> when the 911 calls flooded in, police chief edward immediately feared the worst. with school back in session, parts of this field was jacked with kids, but the pilots intentionally crashed into these trees, endangering themselves to avoid hitting anyone on the ground. >> he had all this area to land and he stayed to the far to the edge of the land as he could. >> he saved people. he saved lives. >> and back live, police right now treating this as a crime scene as they wait for experts to come here to figure out

exactly what it was that led that plane to fall from the sky. as for the two people aboard, they are hospitalized now with what are described as serious injuries. they were bruised and bloodied. one lost consciousness, but they are expected to survive and cops say thanks to them, no one on the ground was hurt. we're live in new jersey, channel 7 eyewitness news. courageous, okay josh, thank you. breaking news now from the u.s. open in queens where a drone has disrupted a match. the drone crashed into the stands at lewis armstrong stadium around 8:30 tonight during a match between pi netta. spectators. the nypd is on the scene trying it. york city bus. police trying to identify the man who did it. they are releasing a picture of the man who threw a metal garbage can and started as a verbal dispute. this happened in july. the cops now asking the

public's help to find the attacker. the driver was not hurt. we have new video tonight showing a woman fighting back as she swarmed by three attackers in brooklyn. another woman grabbed her purse. after a man appears to throw a punch, she gets up and tries to fight them off. the suspects made off with her cell phone. she suffered minor scrapes. new details about an out of control car that slammed into a wendy's. the car was cut off by another vehicle, sending it flying off of route 4 and crashing into a wendy's. the drivers of both cars suffered minor injuries, but amazingly no one inside the wendy's was hurt. one of the drivers was ticketed for careless driving. >> one of the biggest drama appears to be over, finally. the four-game suspension of tom brady, voided today by a judge, not because he didn't have his balls deflated during a playoff game, but because the way the

nfl investigated this case and punished brady. that's what the judge said. the patriots taking on giants in foxboro, we'll begin with rob powers. >> today's coverage of ruling does not indicate tom brady had nothing to do, just that the nfl overstepped when it handed over a four-game suspension. that punishment overturned. brady held strong since the afc title game was played. tonight he did show up for the preseason game, but he didn't play. in fact, he wasn't seen during the game. pats open the regular season one week from tonight, brady would have been forced to miss that game, but with today's court ruling in his back pocket, brady's suspension is lifted. reaction tonight from foxboro after the game. >> okay, rob, thank you. turmoil on the turf. the rutgers football team will kick off the regular season

without five players now arrested. one accused of two home invasions. four were charged with assault for a fight that left a fellow student with a broken jaw. five other people were also charged in the crime spree. and now to a developing story where an argument escalated to murder. a shooting in the parking lot of a college campus in california ends with three people shot, one of them killed and the gunman still on the loose. police say it all started with a dispute in a parking lot at sacramento city college. police are looking for the gunman who fled the scene wearing cargo shorts and no shirt. one of the victims was a student at the college. it's not clear if he's one of the survivors. >> she has become the celebrity who opposed same-sex marriage and tonight she's in jail. the county clerk of kentucky in contempt of court for refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses. she says she is taking a stand because of moral opposition. why just quitting is an option, we don't know. jim dolan is here with the latest.

jim. >> kim davis does her best 21st century in the george wallace standing in the schoolhouse door. she finds that the law, the ark of history, and even her own coworkers lean the other way. the woman whose faith in god prevents her from issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in kentucky will stay in jail until she quits her job or her unforgiving christian conscious can be saved. kim davis swore an oath to uphold the constitution of the united states and today she willingly faced the consequences of violating that oath. >> under whose authority are you not issuing licenses? >> miss doves did not resign. she chose to go to jail for violating an order of the court. >> she's been ordered to stay there until she is willing to change her mind and change her conscious about what that belief is. >> that's not exactly true. miss davis could quit and she would be released from jail. all of the assistant clerks in

her office, except her own son have agreed to issue marriage certificates to same-sex couples, but davis won't quit and won't issue the licenses as required by the court. >> i'm willing to face my consequences and you will face your consequences when it comes time for judgment. >> we don't have consequences. not everyone believes what you believe. >> it's also the law of the land, and miss davis will stay in jail until she stops violating it. >> she is not above the law. that's the way we are. >> many supported her. >> today we come to stand for god and support our county clerk. >> and some republican presidential candidates agreed as well. mike huckabee tweeted, we must end the criminal sogs of christianity and a rand paul spoke out as well. >> i think it's absurd to put someone in jail for exercising their religious liberty. >> no one wanted miss davis to go to jail. even those who filed to have

says he will not run as a third party candidate if he's not the gop's eventual nominee. during the first debate, trump refused to make such a promise. he would wait to see how the republican party treated him. >> they have been absolutely terrific. as you know, that's what i've wanted. i've wanted fairness. i don't have to be treated any differently than anybody else. i just wanted fairness from the republican party. >> trump claims he doesn't forsee any reason he would not need to break the pledge. five people, including three children are recovering tonight from injuries they suffered in a suspicious fire in brooklyn. the fire broke out on glenn wood road and quickly engulfed two homes. it took two hours to put out the flames. fire commissioner says he is looking into whether the fire is part of a string of arsons in the neighborhood. >> we were told there was a

now catskills have cooled off. cold front sitting over the mid hudson valley right now. notice the northeast wind tomorrow. gets gusty during the day. a lot of clouds around first part of the day and a shower threat maybe through lunchtime, early afternoon, especially west of new york city and the clouds will break for sun at hours. but there will be clouds. they are here right now and we had a couple thunderstorms that were over orange county, now just weakening showers working over parts of central new jersey, near franklin and headed toward south brunswick, and a couple light showers. they are weakening as they move toward caldwell. these will stay near new york city. the cold front is right here and it takes a good chunk of the day for this thing to pass through. so, that's why we have a fair amount of clouds around, especially early. look at the cool air. so that's going to settle in tomorrow evening and a much different feel by saturday morning. notice the future cast friday morning. a couple showers around, upper 60s and lower 70s. clouds hang tough.

more breaks in the afternoon, especially east of new york city. still, clouds may be hanging tough west with a couple showers in the afternoon and then the skies will clear. so cooler with more cloud cover tomorrow, 82. the humidity is still moderate to high and then that really tanks tomorrow night and saturday just feels so refreshing. 82 back to beautiful. nice breeze, still concerned about the rip current risk on saturday. not so much for the rest of the weekend. tomorrow, the rip current risk is high. and wind gusts over 25 miles an hour, look at the labor day unbelievable. sunshine all three days, 70 saturday. low 80s on sunday and really still feeling like summer on labor day. could be 90 on monday. mostly cloudy, a couple showers in the area at 7:00 check with amy frieze in the morning. and then clouds will break for a little sun. it's cooler, still less humid, still humid, lower humidity comes in late in the day and the shower threat is through early afternoon. skies clear, more comfortable tomorrow night. there's your fantastic weekend as we warm and get more humid
