police say natural gas was seeing into the home. the mother managed to call for help. phillip mena with more. >> georgia police investigate agattempted murder within the walls of this atlanta area mansion. yvonne trer vin calling 911 for help as her sons attack her and her husband. >> she stated to our 911 operator that her sons were trying to kill her and her husband. >> police say she was able to make that call thanks to her husband zachary. badly wounded as he kept the 17-year-old cameron and 22-year-old christopher at bay. >> she told the operator that the husband was distracting the sons and she was able to call. that is probably the life-saving move from this event. >> reporter: along this street of manicured lawns, neighbors stunned to see the father badly bleeding in front of his home. >> he was moving slightly but he wasn't in good shape at all. >> reporter: police are not commenting on a possible motive for why this seemingly picture perfect family has been torn apart.

clinton supporters nervous, along with that daily drip of headlines about her private e-mails. the latest, that mrs. clinton paid assistant brian pagliano to set up her private e-mail server. he also worked at the state department and now refuses to answer congress' questions, pleading the fifth. clinton has urged him to cooperate, but so far no sign he will, at least not without immunity. with more congressional hearings ahead on mrs. clinton's e-mail, her campaign is preparing for as one aide put it, a bumpy fall. devin dwyer, abc news, washington. the kentucky clerk who refused to grant marriage licenses to gay couples is spending labor day in jail. attorneys for kim davis have filed an appeal in her case. the three-page motion does not include arguments why she should be released but amends her earlier appeal of the judge's order. among those supporting her position, republican presidential candidate mike huckabee. >> what we've seen is the overreach of the judiciary.

sanders has pulled ahead of clinton in new hampshire and he's making a strong showing in iowa, as well. not long ago, clinton was trouncing sanders in iowa by 24% and now her lead in the hawkeye state is down to only 11 points. and clinton, sanders and other democrats running for president have a new challenger, harvard professor larry lessig has joined the race running on a single platform to expand voter access and instatute campaign finance reform. he spoke to george stephanopoulos about the challenges ahead. >> you have to find a way to elevate the debate to focus on the changes that would actually get us a government that could work again that is not captured by the tiniest fraction of the 1% who fund campaigns and make it impossible for our government to do anything. >> campaign finance reform, voting rights reform. >> and dealing with the crazy way we have political gerrymandering where politics pick the voters rather than
