her way to winning a calendar year grand slam. but she has to get by her sister venus. their quarterfinals match is tomorrow. those are some of our top stories on this monday, labor day, september 7th. . >> abc news, this is "world news now." and we begin with the influx of men, women and children still fleeing their homes and streaming into europe to make a new life for themselves. >> now the vatican is taking in two refugee families and the pope is urging every catholic church across europe to do the same. abundance's alex marquardt is traveling with the refugees. >> reporter: arriving in the austrian capital this morning, refugees poured onto the platform, many wrapped in blankets can children clinging to their parents. these hundreds have just come off the train from the hungarian border weary but smiles on their faces. welcomed warmly by translator who's speak arabic and other

languages. teams of volunteers with hot tea and rounds of applause from local austrians. emotional scenes. these two sisters heading to germany overwhelmed as they come to the end of the long and dangerous journey. in yaerm, 000 people very already arrived since yesterday welcomed with applause and signs. all thrilled to have escaped hungary where they were stranded government from leaving. so they tried to walk the 150 miles to the border on the highway in wheelchairs, crutches, parents carrying exhausted children. most here syrians fleeing the war crossing the mediterranean sea in filmscy boats where so many have lost their lives and making their way north into europe. international outrage exploding after there's heart breaking images of a 3-year-old toddler drowned on a syrian beach. the crisis fueling calls for a long-term solution raising questions how many refugees

kentucky county clerk jailed for refusing a judge's order to issue same-sex marriage licenses. >> what we've seen is the overreach of the judiciary. >> she's not running a church. i wouldn't force this on a church. in terms of her responsibility, i think she has to comply. >> as for the clinton campaign, they say they're getting ready for a bumpy fall. chuck receive the son, abc news, new york. we turn to breaking news. that minnesota dentist who killed a beloved lion speaking out for the first time. dr. walter palmer saying he intends to reopen his dental practice tomorrow. it's been closed since early july after international outrage over the death of cecil the lion. he says despite reports otherwise, he has not been in hiding. he reiterated an earlier written statement saying he didn't realize he was killing a protected lion. >> a strange one from georgia where two parents seriously injured allegedly by their sons. they were allegedly trying to kill account couple. both parents were injured.

police say natural gas was seeing into the home. the mother managed to call for help. phillip mena with more. >> georgia police investigate agattempted murder within the walls of this atlanta area mansion. yvonne trer vin calling 911 for help as her sons attack her and her husband. >> she stated to our 911 operator that her sons were trying to kill her and her husband. >> police say she was able to make that call thanks to her husband zachary. badly wounded as he kept the 17-year-old cameron and 22-year-old christopher at bay. >> she told the operator that the husband was distracting the sons and she was able to call. that is probably the life-saving move from this event. >> reporter: along this street of manicured lawns, neighbors stunned to see the father badly bleeding in front of his home. >> he was moving slightly but he wasn't in good shape at all. >> reporter: police are not commenting on a possible motive for why this seemingly picture perfect family has been torn apart.

clinton supporters nervous, along with that daily drip of headlines about her private e-mails. the latest, that mrs. clinton paid assistant brian pagliano to set up her private e-mail server. he also worked at the state department and now refuses to answer congress' questions, pleading the fifth. clinton has urged him to cooperate, but so far no sign he will, at least not without immunity. with more congressional hearings ahead on mrs. clinton's e-mail, her campaign is preparing for as one aide put it, a bumpy fall. devin dwyer, abc news, washington. the kentucky clerk who refused to grant marriage licenses to gay couples is spending labor day in jail. attorneys for kim davis have filed an appeal in her case. the three-page motion does not include arguments why she should be released but amends her earlier appeal of the judge's order. among those supporting her position, republican presidential candidate mike huckabee. >> what we've seen is the overreach of the judiciary.

and many are inching closer to germany. >> the country will respect me as a human and i could bring my family to live with me. that's all i want. >> reporter: in austria, outpouring of generosity. the austrian foreign ministry said 14,000 refugees arrived over the weekend. volunteers landing out water, food, clothing. this train takes them straight to germany. and for his part, pope francis said the vatican will house two refugee families. he called on catholic churches to do the same saying those fleeing from death, from war, from hunger and marching towards life's hope, the gospel asks us to be closer to these small and abandoned people. for now those inspiring pictures out of germany today keep hope alive and people moving forward. >> we take care of the people from syria. okay? and the future in germany is

good. >> reporter: molly hunter, abc news, in vienna, austria. israel is making sure the refugees won't be heading their way and started building a fence along the boarder with jordan to keep them out. prime minister benjamin netanyahu saying israel is too small to take in the refugees. he said we see what happens when countries lose control of their borders alluding to europe. >> the deny it activity who killed cecil the lion speaking out. dr. walter palmer says he intends to resume his dental practice tomorrow. had had been closed since july after outrage over the death of the lion. palmer says despite reports, he has not been hiding. he's kept a low profile he says over safety concerns for his family and reiterating an earlier written statement, palmer says hess no idea the lion he called was a protected animal. storms could threaten those labor day outings in the center of the country today.
