rebounded back to 82. we hit 90 earlier then dropped to around 80. it's 75 in sunset park after storms. ridgewood 81. 77 cambria heights. areas that haven't seen any 91 in poughkeepsie. 90 in trenton. nearly three inches of rain estimated by doppler radar over northern monmouth. an inch and a half over 45 minutes in staten island caused flooding. the reason minor thunderstorms ran into a sea breeze front. wins from the south along the water. southwest inland and that convergence with the wind was enough to fire up the storms. they we can ends over the south shore of long island. they are heaviest over northern monmouth. lightning disappears as well as the storm heads to red bank. more storm cells on monmouth and ocean. we will turn to the hudson valley and the catskills through the evening hours where storms may be widespread. there is the front. that is with us all the way tomorrow through friday morning.

we did make the third heat wave of the season official. the 19th 90-degree day. 62nd day at or above 80. storms are spotty tonight. more widespread downpours tomorrow. we have to watch out for flooding. over staten island, that could be widespread over the area tomorrow. we will talk about it in the seven day in a moment. now the breaking news involving james blake. the nypd tonight insisting this was not a case of racial profiling. he was caught up in a police investigation this afternoon. now cops are investigating if blake was roughed up. this happened in midtown manhattan. josh einiger was there. i just talked to mr. blake? >> reporter: yeah, bill, we spoke to him about 20, 25 minutes ago as he returned to the grand hyatt after his miss adventure a few hours earlier. he wants an apology to the nypd. we will get to what he had to say to me in a moment. first video as he was walking

in here on the very sidewalk where around 11:00 this morning he says he was jumped by five nypd officers and briefly placed into handcuffs for about 15 minutes, forced on the ground and placed into custody. the police confirm that this was the work of the identity theft task force working with an informant regarding a shipment of stolen or fraudulent cell phones. that informant apparently identified blake and one other person in the lobby of the grand hyatt aspects in that case then they took him down. he was just standing here on the sidewalk waiting for a courtesy car to take him to the u.s. open, to the tennis center in flushing where he was corporate appearances. we talked to him when he arrived at the grand hyatt a few minutes ago. >> it shouldn't have happened. it's something that we will deal with with the police and then find out what they have to say internally and hopefully

there is video of it and people can see what happened. >> reporter: did they say anything to you before this happened or just rush you. >> no, no, just rushed me. >> reporter: what would you like to hear? >> an apology. >> reporter: you heard him say there he wants an apology from the nypd. police commissioner bill bratton ordered an investigation into what happened. police tell us they did have probable cause based on one of their informants that he was a suspect in their case and as soon as they figure owed, with the help of a retired detective walking by and recognized him, that's when they figured out he was not actually their suspect and then they let him go. we will continue to follow this story as it continues to develop throughout the night and the pham outfrom the nypd, any other comment we get from them throughout the night on social media and "eyewitness news at 11:00". live outside the grand hyatt hotel in midtown, josh einiger, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> josh, thank you. signs of disagreement between pope francis, the secret service and nypd.

this is two weeks from his highly anticipated visit here. the vatican's ambassador to the u.n. tonight telling eyewitness news that pope francis, who likes to be among the people is not happy about a proposal to build a wall on 5th avenue to protect him from the crowds. eyewitness news reporter n.j. burkett is in midtown with the story. >> reporter: that's the point. the pope says he doesn't want to be protected from the crowds. he wants to reach out and embrace them. you can imagine the security challenge that represents here in the heart of america's largest city. so, tonight, the vatican is speaking out for the first time. late this afternoon, nypd detectives huddled with agents of the u.s. secret service outside of st. patrick's cathedral. others ran through a series of scenarios at police headquarters. nypd officials say protecting pope francis will be one of the most monumental challenges in

the modern history of policing. vatican officials are concerned but not about the pope's safety. >> how much the security will influence if people go out in the street to see him. >> reporter: the pope's u.n. ambassador said francis made his wishes clear. he wants to greet the crowds on 5th avenue and in central park. but he says the secret service wants to build a wall down 5th avenue and require admission tickets to the park. at a news conference, the archbishop said those measures are being debated. >> they are talking about walling and having tickets which the holy father would not be very pleased. >> reporter: the archbishop told us that pope francis is passionate about people and security, he said, needs to reflect that. >> he wouldn't love the walls. i mean, i think even security people know that. we have told them about that, that the holy father wants to

several vehicles then into the front windows of a store. the suspect suffered serious injuries including broken vertebrae and under police guard in the hospital. in new jersey, investigators are on the scene of a partial hangar collapse at newark that left four workers hurt, two critically. the old united airlines hangar was in the process of being demolished when the collapse happened. nine workers were inside the building. it's not clear what caused the collapse to happen. labor troubles and a looming strike on long island and the boss versus worker dispute could affect thousands of students. the issue higher wages. most drivers hour. kristin thorne is in farmingdale with the story. kristin. >> reporter: well, bill, right now federal mediators are meeting with members of the school bus union and members of the school bus company right

now inside teamster headquarters. the uni don't know says that -- union says they are not able to reach an agreement tonight, there will be a strike tomorrow. >> i hope they can come to an agreement. >> reporter: so do hundreds of other parents on long island keeping that bauman and sons bus company and teamsters 105 reach and agreement tonight. if not, it's plan b for tons of parents. >> who is driving them? >> you are. >> daddy. >> reporter: the bus union is demanding higher wages, more medical benefits and pensions for the 1200 members. negotiations with the bus company since may have not proved fruitful. >> our own members cannot put food on their table. they are unable to provide medical care for themselves and their children. >> reporter: if a strike happens tomorrow, it would affect students in the middle country school district of commack and north port school districts. some see programs and special needs students would be affected. a spokesperson for bauman said

the union members make 14 to $22 an hour. they say the union is asking for increased in -- increases in pay as high as 32%. in a letter, the owner of baun man and zones wrote the union is attempting to force an above market settlement for its members. we ask all of you not to be a part of such an unreasonable plan. >> reporter: just a short time ago we saw members coming out to take a breather. they say it will be a long night. both sides are hopeful to reach and agreement tonight and are willing to work through the night to get it. live in farmingdale, kristin thorne, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> keep us posted. thank you. as we continue, apple making its big announcement about several new products.

styled got a fair amount of rain today. >> that can signal what will happen during the day tomorrow with slow moving storms. >> a.j. ross was in south beach staten island. they got an inch and a quarter. maybe 45 minutes. man, i'm surprised to see the water hasn't receded. obviously the drains that are clogged their and sunshine over staten island. we will have storms that will train which means they will go over the same place multiple times over the next 24 hours and we have to be careful of that in staten island, the five boroughs but just about everywhere. staten island got hit. it was over the verrazano. now showers over long island and heavier storms over monmouth and weakening as the sun gets close to setting. this view to the south doesn't look as ominous the past couple of hours. 82 down from 90. breezy ahead of a cold front tomorrow and 90 the managed to get to 90 before 2:00 this afternoon and that made for the third heat wave of the season.

average high 78. we are on that tomorrow. that will be the first time since july 9th that we have been below 80 for a high temperature. sunsets at 7:15. so, from here on out we have scattered showers and storms. at least now through midday they will be hit or miss. as we go through the evening hours, there is an idea that storms are widespread north and west of new york city. tomorrow morning, hopefully a lull for the morning commute, gloomy, murky, showers around. heavier storms redevelop lunchtime and into the afternoon. the storms really blew up as they hit the sea breeze front. you can see the lightning came as fireworks. the showers are weakening a bit. downpour off the south shore of nassau county. a couple of cells here reasonable assumptions den, manalapan.
