return. we do say good morning to you, everyone. we get started with breaking news out of northern california. a raging wildfire burning out of control right now. >> authorities say at least one person has died in the valley fire. home after home now a pile of charred rubble. people who live there given very short notice to evacuate. >> and new video this morning e showing a person escaping in a car. watch this. the road surrounded by flames. ashes and embers raining down. thick smoke making it nearly impossible to see. the roar of the raging wildfire caught on camera. overnight, the wall of flames leaving a trail of destruction. scorching more than 1,000 homes and businesses on the edge of wine country. >> the school's gone. the store's gone. a lot of people had dogs stuck up there. they won't let them go get them. >> reporter: thousands of people forced to evacuate.

many of them with the clothes on their backs. >> it went all the way around us. there was no stopping it. we watched the houses around us burn. it was utter chaos. >> reporter: a view from the air. middletown decimated. >> what hits you is the sheer scope of the devastation. it just goes on and on. homes, cars, precious mementos. in this neighborhood alone, 36 homes, gone. >> reporter: this morning, four firefighters are recovering in the hospital, saifrd by their fire shelters when flames overtook them. >> they're going to get treated and they're going to make it through. >> reporter: about 60 miles south, the butte fire is bad. the firefighters on the front lines can battle the flames. and they hope their own exhaustion. >> the wild fivers are more than a dozen burning in california.

the weather cooperating. now slowing down the pace of the valley fire. >> rob marciano shows us what's in store for today. >> reporter: we'll get cooler weather in here. 10 to 15 degrees cooler. 80 around sacramento. humidity levels go up. not a ton of rain. but we'll take the higher levels of humidity. and the cooler weather. cool weather across the northeast as well. 38 in parts of west virginia. 55 in d.c. some of the coldest air since may. a taste of fall. politics. just two days until the next gop debate. a new abc news/"washington post" poll shows hillary clinton and donald trump statistically even. clinton, 46%. trump, 43. >> more results show a troubling trend for the clinton campaign.

bazi kanani joins us from washington with more. >> reporter: the abc news/"washington post" poll shows hillary clinton is losing ground and donald trump is stronger than ever. for the democrats, hillary clinton has lost one-third of her support. she's still the front-runner. the poll shows her at 42%. bernie sanders at 24%. and joe biden, not officially in the race, at 21%. now, on the republican side, donald trump and ben carson are surging. commanding more than half of the vote between them in the crowded field. trump is at 33%. carson, up to 20%. and jeb bush there at a distant third at 8%. now, today, donald trump is speaking in the home of dallas mavericks. that 20,000-seat arena is already sold out. some people have already been spotted scalping tickets.

gate when it clipped the left wing of a departing alaska airlines flight. the bump damaged the right stabilizer on the united plane. both planes are out of commission. also new this morning, the recommendations of the ferguson commission are being announced today. among the recommendations, bringing in missouri's attorney general as a special prosecutor for police-involved killings. and expanding police officer training. and raising the minimum wage. more e details with the full today. turning to the sniper shootings in phoenix. three teenagers have been arrested for launching copy cat attacks. at least 11 cars were hit in the last two weeks. police believe the real shooter loose. the 18-year-olds arrested yesterday admitted to flinging rox at cars. they're not linked to the incidents trizerrorizing the city.

again in seattle as a teacher's strike enters its second week. both sides met over the weekend. they're still so far apart over the issue of salary. the strike has used up three of the snow days on the calendar. if the strike drags on, holidays could be cut. let's call it another step toward the driverless car. major automakers, including ford and gm, have agreed to equip new cars with automatic brake systems. they sense an impending collision and automatically apply the brax. if every car had autobraking, it's estimating 200,000 accidents could be eliminated every year. good news for drivers. the summer driving season ended with the lowest gas prices in more than a decade. aaa says motorists are paying about $1 less per gallon of gas than last year.

averaging $2.34 a gallon. motorists are saving about six cents a gallon compared to a week ago. and 28 cents compared to a month ago.
