first cops said it was hazing, now they say it's murder. dozens of students tonight charged in the death of a young fraternity pledge. we're also following breaking news. good evening at 11:00. i'm sade baderinwa. >> and i'm bill ritter. that

breaking news, a cyclist killed tonight in a freak accident. cops investigating an incident on staten island. >> eyewitness news reporter jim dolan is there. >> for the family, for the friends, for the parents of this active young girl, this is just unimaginable. this 22-year-old woman out for a bike ride with a friend when suddenly a trailer carrying a fishing boat came untethered to the truck that was pulling it. the fishing boat and the trailer struck two women. >> reporter: the man who was towing the boat stayed at the grim scene as police tried to figure out what happened. a mangled bike sat on the side of hylan boulevard. its owner, a 22-year-old woman out for a ride with a friend when the towed fishing boat somehow detached from the truck that was pulling it. it first hit one bike

rider. she later died from her injuries. a second young woman was dragged underneath the boat and seriously hurt. it was a horrifying scene for neighbors. >> her arm was under the tire of the boat. i didn't go across though. i get very nervous. >> you didn't want to see anything up there. >> i did not. >> reporter: it's not yet clear if the fishing boat was properly attached or secured to the toyota tundra. but the driver was allowed to leave the scene after talking with police. >> give us an idea what happened. boat is not supposed to becoming detached. can you tell us how that happened? >> he did not stop to explain or offer condolences to the family of a 22-year-old woman struck and killed by the boat that somehow came unhitched at the worst imaginable time. >> it was very scary. >> a 22-year-old woman is dead. another in serious condition. she was injured

in this. police are investigating the possibility that that trailer hitch was somehow modified and that may have caused it to become unsafe but again, no charges yet against that driver. he was allowed to leave the scene. reporting live from staten island, jim dolan, channel 7 eyewitness news. another story about a young person dying. this time this kid was just 19. the college freshman the victim of a weekend-long vicious hazing ritual. dozens of his fraternity brothers facing serious criminal charges. five of them are charged with his murder. michael deng knocked unconscious. they waited an hour before taking him to the hospital. lucy yang. >> two years later, justice is finally moving ahead for a young college student who never even had a chance to begin chasing his dreams. tonight prosecutors

believe he was killed by those he tried to befriend. >> reporter: tonight more than 30 students are facing charges in the tragic hazing 19-year-old michael deng who was a freshman. five of the students are looking at murder. >> oh, man. that's terrible. because it's not like they're out there in the streets doing bad things, doing drugs, or causing any harm. they're going to college. >> reporter: two years ago a group of students rented a house in the poconos for what should have been a weekend of bonding and pledging for pi delta psi. instead authorities say it turned in to a deadly night of hazing. investigators believe 19-year-old michael deng was blindfolded, told to wear a 30-pound backpack, then walked through a gauntlet of abuse, except the blows proved fatal. he lost consciousness. instead of getting help right away, officials report the boys panicked, brought him inside, and tried to cover the evidence. it was an hour before he was

taken to the hospital. then it was too late. >> such a mistake. so young. so foolish. i can't even imagine what the family is going through. >> reporter: pi delta psi reportedly had a name for this ritual, called the glass ceiling. the asian-american frat, which was supposed to promote cultural awareness, friendship, and loyalty, has since been banned from the college. >> i feel for both sides. i'm pretty sure they didn't want him to die. >> also being charged with murder in this case, the frat itself, deng's family in response issued a statement. >> we had some technical difficulties. that was lucy yang in manhattan. also exclusive video tonight of a bus driver for the mta charged of taking a new jersey city bus on a drunken joyride. alexander copeland. cops say his blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit when he drove erratically on the northern state parkway. it was his day off and police say he

this morning i'm forced to fashion a my conscious with judge benning's orders. >> the lawyer for davis questioned validity of the new licenses since her name is not on them but kentucky's governor and attorney general say they are indeed valid. a former police officer accused of murdering an unarmed black man. a judge in charleston, south carolina denied bond for michael slager tonight. slager has been held in solitary confinement since his arrest in april for the shooting death of water scott after a traffic stop. and a manhunt underway right now for the college professor who shot and killed a fellow professor on campus. geography instructor shannon lamb accused of killing history professor ethan schmidt at delta state university in mississippi. no word on a motive for the shooting. lamb is also the suspect in a murder of the woman he lived with some 300 miles away from campus. cops say they

made contact with lamb who told them he was not going to jail. >> that devastating fire in a drought stricken northern california remains raging out of control. a fire north of napa valley has destroyed hundreds of homes. this is in the town of middletown. an elderly disabled woman trapped in her home over the weekend was killed. thousands fled saying the speed of the fire was like nothing they've experienced before. >> as we came down, fire everywhere. our neighbors' houses, friends' houses, everybody's houses are burning up. it's awful. >> one man taking this dramatic video this weekend while he was fleeing his home. flames eventually surrounded and destroyed his entire neighborhood. a wake service held in new jersey tonight for one of the last remaining tuskegee airmen. the service was held in rutherford for lieutenant span who died at the age of 90. he was an original tuskegee airman,

a gator on the loose in queens. say what? new york city parks department trying to capture a 2-foot long alligator spotted this afternoon in a waterway, in flushing meadows corona park. gators were seen at the park one month ago. that one nicknamed jaws, never captured. police aren't sure if the one spotted today is the same creature. new at 11:00, one of the movies playing in a theater in times square is a walk in the woods. unfortunately some moviegoers at that complex feels like they've been walking in the woods. they're complaining about bug bites. bedbugs. not the first time the theater has had to deal with this. is there a re-infestation? tim fleischer. >> reporter: her right arm is still swollen. >> i felt three bites on my arm. i flashed my cell phone light on the seat and saw the bug climbing down the seat.
