charged including the fraternity's national president, andy ming. the police chief says the investigation has a lot of moving parts. >> he was single out and he was treated harsher than the other pledges. >> nearly two years after michael deng died, we are learning more about what happened inside this home in the pocono mountains. in december of 2013, members of pi delta psi fraternity, students from baruch college and st. john's university, carried out a hazing ritual so extreme authorities maintain it killed deng who was a freshman pledge. >> hundreds of pounds of impulsive blows to cause the damage to the interior of the brain. >> reporter: he was blindfolded, forced to wear a backpack filled with 30 pounds of sand and during the glass sealing run across this frozen lawn and try not to be tackled by a line of brothers. police say deng slipped, hit

his head and passed out. instead of immediately calling 911, frat members allegedly carried deng inside, changed his clothes and searched the internet for head injuries. more than an hour later, three suspects drove an unresponsive deng to the hospital where he died. during the investigation, authorities say they were hit with roadblocks at every turn. >> individuals who were actively involved in the assault, individuals who lied to the police to individuals who had hid evidence and individuals who fled the scene. >> reporter: the frat rented the house during this unsanctioned event. 37 members face criminal charges for, among other things, homicide. >> this is a clear hazing is not permitted. >> reporter: now, as to not overload the court system here, authorities have chosen to charge the defendant dance in

after being hit by a boat on staten island. alexa cioffi was killed in the accident. police say the two women were riding their bikes. a truck towing a boat tried to pass them on the road but somehow the boat broke loose, slid off and struck the women, again, riding their bikes. both were pinned underneath. david? we are one week away from pope francis historic trip to the united states. the fbi arrested a 15-year-old boy accused of plotting to attack the pontiff during his visit. he was taken into custody in philadelphia last month. the suspect allegedly planning an isis inspired assault involving explosives and firearms. law enforcement sources say the threat was not i am my inapt and the teen's plans were at the inspirational stage. here in new york, a member of the nypd along with dozens of other agencies ran security drills yesterday simulating a series of possible scenarios.

the death toll from flash floods in utah is at eight. five others are missing. people say they haven't seen floods like this in years. abc's marci gonzales joins us with more on how hundreds are sorting through the debris. >> reporter: david, the flooding and rain continued through the night making the ongoing search efforts more challenging. >> reporter: a desperate search for the missing. mothers and children swept away yesterday when flash floods tore through this part of utah on the arizona border. two packed vehicles stopped on a gravel road when a wall of powerful rushing water hit them from behind. >> the flash flood was so significant it overwhelmed them and pushed them in the channel. the vehicles were rolled several hundred yards downstream. >> reporter: three of the people pulled to safety. the other 13 in those vehicles now either deed or missing.

some people in middletown california return to their home to find nothing but rubble left behind by a massive wildfire. the fire is 15% contained. officials identified the one victim from the fire. 72-year-old barbara mcwilliams was unable to escape due to a disability. the wildfire, plus another burning about 120 miles to the southeast have destroyed 720 homes and displaced 23,000 people. a huge fire in philadelphia is under control. the three-alarm fire in center city started in a building under construction. it spread to a neighboring building. people nearby had to be evacuated. the cause being investigated. no one was hurt. instead of classes, a vigil

is being held at delta state university in mississippi to honor a professor killed on campus. police say the man who fatally shot ethan schmidt in his office is dead. authorities say shannon lamb shot himself last night as police closed in on him. officers started following lamb after a license plate reader picked up his plate as he headed back into mississippi from arkansas. >> we didn't want it to happen this way. he was the one that made that decision. >> police say lamb killed his live in girlfriend yesterday. authorities say they uncovered a motive for either murder. right now the university of connecticut women's basketball team is being honored at the white house. president obama is meeting with the team to congratulate them on the 2015 ncaa championship.

welcome back. a private school in upstate new york started a popular club. it's a rifle club for the very young. the rochester rifle club has members who have just turned 12. they never fired a gun but they are eager to learn the safety rules and get to the rifle range. >> i grew up with a grandpa who loved hunting. i would like to understand the use of this so that i can teach other people the safety of guns. organizers say the gun program started offering services to schools back in 1914 and they say interest in
