gunfire ringing out late tonight in newark on springfield avenue and irvine turner boulevard. >> josh einiger live at the scene. >> let me show you what's going on back there as investigators start to crawl over this scene. cataloging it for clues and searching among other things for shell casings. i'll show you video we shot in the last couple minutes after we first arrived here at this housing project off irvine turner boulevard. at around 9:30 we are told there were multiple gunshots. four people shot. fortunately non-life-threatening injuries. one eyewitness told eyewitness news on the phone he heard as many as nine or ten shots and coming back to a live picture from our camera, you can see as officers with flashlights search this parking lot for evidence that they can find that can link them to the shooter or shooters in this case. we have been told they've not recovered a weapon on the scene and the four people

who were shot, it's not clear right now if they were intended targets or innocent bystanders or a combination of the two. all of them taken hospitals where we're told their injuries are not life-threatening. as the search for the shooters and to why this happened in the first place gets underway. josh einiger, channel 7 eyewitness news. happening right now in long island, crews are working to clear the wreckage of a freight train derailment. regular service has resumed but clearing this mess could take all night. the two-car derailment happened this afternoon, putting one the lirr cars out of service, triggering extensive delays. an act of unilateral violence. a player ripping off the helmet of a player, and using it to hit that player in cops are investigating.

it happened in the union county city of linden. aj ross is there with the latest. >> no question, this gridiron clash between immac i'll oughta tem -- item -- immaculata. tempers flared and flags were quickly thrown between the showdown friday night when a dead play at the line of scrimmage led to this vicious unprotected blow to the head. watch as number 73 and 21 get tangled up with the play. his helmet is ripped off by the linden player who swings and strikes him across the head. although the linden player was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, he wasn't ejected from the game, and now school officials are requesting he

receive the maximum punishment. the player received 10 stitches. since the team's dirty play, immaculata members have reached out to the union county prosecutor's office along with state athletic officials. linden police confirmed they're investigating the incident but say so far no charges have been filed. >> things like that happen. it's a brake -- breakdown. any team player that does that should be automatically taken off. >> linden public schools released the following statement, saying, quote, the linden public school district is taking this very seriously, and by no means is this incident a reflection of our school community or athletic teams. live tonight in linden, new jersey, aj ross, channel 7 eyewitness news. a blockbuster disclosure tonight for the man a new york cop was supposedly looking for when he mistakenly and violently took down former tennis pro james blake. sean satha talking

the 2nd grade, plans to hire 700 new reading teachers. annual costs, $75 million. >> only 30% of our kids were reading at grade level by 3rd grade. we weren't in the right place. so we have to do something different. we can't tell our kids you're college bound and not show them we're investing in them by giving them the kind of courses that will help get them there. >> the mayor will make his announcement tomorrow. unprecedented security expected during pope francis's visit to the u.s. tonight we're learning new details about an alleged security threat and arrest connected to the papal visit. the fbi says it arrested a 15-year-old boy from camden county, new jersey. they say he was talking about attacking the pontiff during his visit to philadelphia with an isis inspired assault using explosives and firearms. >> this is not something people should be alarmed about. my definition of what would be credible, something that could be operational, something that

is about to take place, that sort of thing, and unless i'm missing something, i don't see this as having that level of significance where people should be concerned. >> the fbi says the threat was not imminent and that the teen's plot was, quoting, at the aspirational stage. now to the 2016 round 2 republican presidential debates. candidates using their final hours to prep for tomorrow night's showdown. the debate taking place at the ronald reagan presidential library in simi valley. who's leading in the polls right now? ben carson and donald trump. expect political punches to land hard tomorrow. tomorrow a push to extend the james zadroga 9/11 act. first responders will rally. the zadroga act pays for health programs and pays compensation to ground zero workers.

a catastrophe tonight in utah. flash flooding in the majestic zion national park. the death toll at at least 16 and it's sure to rise, this after the skies opened up. the video you're about to see frightening and so powerful. >> reporter: fierce flash floods and an avalanche of water. one and a half inches of rain in half an hour. >> oh, my goodness. it went over. >> reporter: those cars blindsided by the flooding. inside the cars, three mothers and 13 kids. just washed away. >> they're getting everybody out. >> reporter: nearby and also in the city of hill dale which is a strong hold for a polygamous off chute of the mormon church, worried they would wash away and disappear, just like the others. some of the bodies recovered this afternoon, like a 10-year-old boy found six and a half miles downstream from where the cars that had been turned in to boats just stopped. >> i knew the mothers.

i knew them as they were growing up as young girls. >> this was off my street. >> reporter: this creek at one point in nine minutes rose three and a half feet. two feet of water can sweep away a car. >> oh, my goodness. it's huge. it's getting bigger. >> reporter: meanwhile up north in zion national park, several people dead, several missing because of flash floods. >> just horrible. that flood g -- flooding in zion included a group hiking in the canyon before they closed the trails because of flood warnings. the death toll at 16. but it is sure to climb. some communities in drought stricken southern california now dealing with the aftermath of record breaking rains. much of los angeles county was inundated today with more than 2 inches of rain. a camera was rolling when a man and his dog were rescued by firefighters from the swollen los angeles river.

a heartbreaking homecoming for thousands of people returning to their charred remains of their community scorched by wildfire. up to 700 homes have been destroyed by two massive fires in northern california. a 72-year-old woman was killed when flames engulfed her home in middletown. straight ahead on eyewitness news at 11:00, caught in the act. a man watching on his cell phone as burglars rummage right through his home. what does he do and who came to the rescue? >> plus, it's been his faithful companion for 19 years. tonight one man's desperate search for his stolen dog. >> you wouldn't know that fall is a mere eight days away, you believe that? temperatures in the low 70s right now. warmest weather still ahead of

a garbage truck that nearly fell through a hole in a parking garage in brooklyn is out and on stable ground. the driver said he was making a routine trash pickup in flatbush today when

the weight of the truck caused the wheels to poke a hole in the parking garage. talk about feeling helpless. a homeowner watches two thieves break in to his apartment on his cell phone but he did more than just watch. now cops releasing the surveillance video hoping someone can help identify the crooks that they say may be involved with other burglaries in the area. here's jim dolan. >> that's him coming through the kitchen window. >> reporter: danny wheeler was at work when an app on his phone called canary alerted him there was someone in his apartment. when he opened the app up he saw a man roaming around, first going in to his bedroom and then moments later walking over to a living room window, moving aside plants and nicknacks to eventually let a second man in the apartment. sitting at work watching it all, wheeler was furious. >> i'm just really, really angry. i can't believe this is happening in my apartment right now. i'm not there and somebody

is trying to break in to my house and steal my stuff. that just makes my blood boil over. >> reporter: he called 911 but the real hero of this story is shamus. >> i saw the guy going through the window. >> reporter: he was in the back of the building and spotted the second guy going through the window. he called out for him. >> i said hey, what are you doing? he continues through the window and i said hey again. >> reporter: that scared the man enough to run. on the surveillance video you can see the first guy heads to the front door and the second goes right through the same window he came in. in the meantime, wheeler had sent screen grabs to the police. >> by the time i got here there were helicopters up and 30 cops roaming, looking around the area. >> reporter: take a look again at the two men. police say they have been involved in other burglaries in the neighborhood and they'd sure like any help they can get identifying them. mr. wheeler said he never used that app before. never had any reason to. the two men didn't get very much because mr. mcdade scared them away.

channel 7 eyewitness news. new at 11:00, a desperate search tonight for a u.s. veteran's therapy dog that disappeared in harlem. 45-year-old james pardellas says his dog, precious, a 19-year-old chihuahua, was tied to a fence friday when someone took her. pardellas who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder has placed fliers around harlem. >> i haven't slept. just looking for this dog since friday. you see posters of dogs that are missing all the time in this area and you never think it will happen to you and it happened to me. >> turns out pardellas' brother forgot he tied the dog outside the store. someone possibly thought she was abandoned. lots of questions about tomorrow's commute after a derailment on the lirr tracks in nassau county. let's take a

live look at westbury where crews are working right now. normal service has resumed with some residual delays but the cleanup as you can imagine could take all night. they've got to upright that train there. >> there is good news. there was no people. it was a freight train. what a mess it made of the commute. >> let's hope it's smooth sailing tomorrow. the weather is going to be nice. >> weather-wise, there are going to be no problems. how many top 10 days can we have within a week? >> 65. >> we're going to keep these days coming in to the day on thursday and friday. humidity will stay at a reasonably low level so it never feels that uncomfortable. lit up in green, white, and red for mexican independence day. that temperature, 73 degrees. humidity down at 48%. the wind is calm. the high on the day got up to 84. we really began the warmup today but it didn't feel that bad because humidity

stayed so low. 62 is our morning low. average high for this time of the year for september 15th, around 76. we got up to 92 in 1927. sun going down these days at 7:05. if you're planning your day tomorrow, hour by hour, 9 a.m. temperature around 72. we're up in to the low 80s already by noon time. 87 for a high around 3:00 in the afternoon before we tail things back off to around 80 before the sun goes down. right now speaking of the sun going down and getting dark and cooling off in the northern western suburbs we're down in to the 50s. morristown down to 55. 55 at mont icello. these northern western areas can get down to 40. dew points are between invigorating and pleasant. they might get in to the sticky category by saturday. just for one day you might feel the humidity out there but otherwise just picture-perfect weather coming up. we do need the rainfall though. a lot of the area still in a moderate drought.

we might get a shot at a shower or two across 10% to 20% of the area sunday. radar satellite not showing much across the entire eastern 2/3rds of the country. high pressure firmly in control, blocking any storminess from out west and you heard about the massive flooding in some areas. those storms are going to move well off to our north and west. lows tonight getting down to 66 in the park. 49 in sussex. 59, belmar. low 60s on the island. highs tomorrow back in to the upper 80s in the park, way, way above normal. we're talking 12, 13 degrees above normal for this time of the year. on thursday we'll repeat the same thing. high getting up to about 87. if anything that ridge of high pressure retrogrades or moves off to the west and keeps us in that warm westerly and southwesterly flow. accuweather forecast, clear and comfortable. 50s in many of the suburbs. there could be a little bit of patchy fog in some of the valleys well outside the city by morning. sunshine and cool with

in tonight's health alert, too much sitting down might be bad for, among other things, your liver. researchers in south korea finding people who sit more than five hours a day had a 9% greater risk of getting fatty liver disease. how much people exercised and how much they weighed did not have an effect on that risk. the ceo of bmw caught on camera collapsing during a presentation in germany. harold kruger sounded out of breath before he stumbled backwards and dropped to the floor. he's 49 years old. he was helped off the stage. a spokesperson said he had been traveling a lot recently and had had not been feeling well. doctor recommended rest for a few days. scientists in northwestern ireland are trying to find out an ancient mystery exposed by

mets keep rolling along. back at it tonight against the marlins with an eight-game winning streak. this game starts like last night's ended with a david wright rbi. the mets have a 1st inning lead but it goes downhill fast. jacob degrom gave up 10 hits in five innings. the marlins' 1st four batters combined for the hits. the mets lose 9-3. the nationals win tonight so the magic number holds at 10. before the game today, some of the players stopped by at the ny rescue company in woodside. every year the mets visit a fire house sometime around september 11th, show their support. talking possibly clinching a playoff spot on this home stand. >> hopefully it happens but our main concern is continuing to play good baseball and get in to october. the yankees trying to get their own magic started on the road, two in a row, trying to
