is not -- limited service after 8:00 but that is not certain. this is a long 24 hours and a long night on the l.i.r.r. tonight. live tonight, n.j. burkett, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> n.j., thank you. from long island to new jersey, fast action against the high school football player seen on videotape bashing an opponent with a helmet. the player from linden lill permanently kicked off the -- high school permanently kicked off the team and suspended from school. anthony johnson is the story for us. >> reporter: we are outside the imacculata football practice. they are just wrapping up the practice. we saw a number of the players including number 73. he is the one seen on the video that very disturbing video that many people across the country have now had an opportunity to see as you can see and they are now walking off the field. he has talked to a number of friends inside the school.

they are playing a game against baskin ridge this weekend and he is ready to go. the imacculata spartans are going through the drills as they prepare for the game on the 17th. the one person on the field in full pads, number 73, is in the spotlight for not reacting to what happened in this video this past weekend when his helmet was ripped off by an opposing player. the linden lineman then smashed the helmet into the player's head causing a cut that needed ten stitches to close. students say the player is handling this with dignity. has he talked about what happened? >> not in detail. he is a humble kid. he takes it in and going with it. >> reporter: authorities may be ready to file charges against the player from linden. the school has now kicked him off the team and on social media there is a claim that unsportsmanlike act was not done on purpose but still

the action on the field. >> he is doing all right. he is in school, healthy. >> reporter: has he said anything about what happened here? >> no, he hasn't. >> i thought the play was dirty. i know him pretty well. i know he would never do anything to provoke that response. >> reporter: linden players have been preparing for the next game, too and are trying to move past the latest high school show of foul play. as for the imacculata team, the focus is on the game against baskin ridge. the linden police and the union county prosecutor's office investigating the case and they as tomorrow. in somerville, anthony johnson, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> anthony, thank you. a mother charged in the death of her 6-year-old daughter pled not guilty today in westchester county court. kathleen dymes faces charges including criminally negligent homicide in the death of her daughter lacey car at her home

last easter. an autopsy found lacey ingested benadryl, morphine and diazapam. her lawyer is suggesting that the child somehow got a hold of the drugs and took them on her own. a family of governor cuomo's aide issuing a statement saying that many carey gabay is brain dead. he was shot during a predawn celebration for the west indian american parade last monday. his family said they are grieving for a man struck down by a call last gun violence act. >> this is another painful reminder of the problem this nation has with gun violence and almost on a weekly basis we learn the same lesson over and over and over again. >> the suspect seen on surveillance video. nypd is using facial recognition software to try to

new at 6:00, a new york city science teacher that crashed his drone at the u.s. open said the drone malfunctioned. it crashed into the stands during a women's single's tennis match. the teacher faced a judge in court. the faa released a new warning about flying drones during the pope's visit next week. darla miles is in flushing meadows with much more. darla? >> reporter: liz, daniel burly is into technology, not tennis, according to his attorney. he says this is the photograph he wanted to take when that drone went haywire. are you saying that your client learned the hard way and he wants everyone else to learn from his mistakes. >> i think that is a fair assessment. >> reporter: a tough lesson to learn. 26-year old school teacher danly gurley in court after taking his robotic drone up for a whirl. it crash landed into the stands in the middle of the u.s. open

two weeks ago. >> he has no interest in tennis. he was there to photograph the sun setting at flushing meadow park. that was the sole purpose. unfortunately the drone got away from him. >> reporter: the unnice fear is next to the billie jean king tennis center. he parked at college point avenue and walked over according to the criminal complaint and he set up the go pro camera on the drone and when he took the drone up for the second flight, the drone lost its signal and flew away in the direction of the trees. >> he actually tried to regain control of the drone because avoid happening. >> reporter: the faa is trying to prevent the same mistake during the pope's visit to new york, d.c. and philly declaring the areas no drone zones. >> the faa has flight restrictions in place during

the papal visit. leave your drone at home. flying a drone anywhere near the areas pope francis visits is against the law. violators could face stiff fines and possible criminal penalties. >> reporter: the no drone zone will be in effect from september 22 to september 27th. reporting live in flushing, darla miles, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> darla, thank you. new at 6:00 a big push to close what health officials call the treatment gap involving heroin addicts. users that overdose in new york state are immediately released. it's a risky time for addicts to try to withdraw. in suffolk county, a new strategy. don't release them, treat them. here is kristin thorne. >> these people are in crisis. they need assistance. that is a vulnerable time. if they don't get the help they need they might be back on the street using.

>> reporter: instead, people who overdose on heroin, in nassau county can go from the emergency room to mary haven new hope crisis center in freeport 24-7 free of charge. >> i lost my son three years ago. undoubtedly new hope will save lives in that crucial time after an overdose. >> reporter: crisis center workers will use these advance to pick up patients at hospitals or agencies and bring them to mary haven to undergo withdrawal treatment, counseling and get them in a long-term rehab program. the center can hold 30 patients at a time. >> this is a big step in being able to realize treatment on demand and connecting people with the help that they need. >> reporter: where is the money coming from to do this? acting district attorney says she has committed $585,000 from the county's criminal asset forfeiture funds to fund the program now through the next year. long-term funding is expected

transit officials in new jersey are down playing concerns about potential commuter chaos during the papal

pope francis. >> he looks to st. francis as his role model, someone that gave up his riches and basically gave up everything in his life to just worship god. >> reporter: the three boys and three girls will meet the pope with three other schools in harlem. each group is working on various projects on issues important to the pontiff. before meeting them the 7 and 8 year olds say francis made an impact in their lives and understand his message. >> all love -- love all people the same. treat people the way you want to be treated. >> he is very special to me because he cares about others. he loves us no matter what we look like. >> reporter: all 24 students from the four schools will sing for pope francis a song specially chosen for the holy father. >> the clock is ticking. it's stinking in how fortunate we are to have this once in a lifetime opportunity.

the centers for medicare and medicaid services recently asked patients to rate the quality of over 3,500 hospitals. fewer than 10% received 5 stars. among them was cancer treatment centers of america in philadelphia.

after contacting a faculty member to discuss the academic of a at let. flood gets the punishment what the school calls severe and justified and has been in contact with the ncaa to see if any of its rules apply. rutgers football had what number of players kicked off after arrests unrecollected -- unrelated to this discipline for flood but part of evening going on on campus. part of flood's statement, we adhere to a higher standard, one that i am responsible to be aware of. i take full responsibility and accept the consequences of my actions. wilson will step in for flood. on the nfl, no -- big blue making one thing clear. they are moving full steam ahead to the falcons, putting the embarrassing ending of the game in dallas behind them. the blame game, the apologies. letter they did enough to win the game. after a loss that disappointing, there is a
