i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm reena ninan. a marathon debate. donald trump saying it was almost as long as "gone with the wind." three hours of bickering, zingers and contentious confrontations as they battled for attention and votes. >> entertaining. a field of 11 faced off at the ronald reagan presidential library in southern california last night touching on a range of issues from immigration to iran. >> from the prime spot at center stage donald trump took direct fire and he also threw the first punch, but carly fiorina held her own and stole the show. with more, here's bazi kanani. bazi, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. as you mentioned this was a lengthy debate and even with all of those candidates on the stage, 11 of them, there was still plenty of time to dig into the issues. analysts say that is where donald trump lost his command. >> first of all rand paul shouldn't even be on this stage. >> reporter: round two began much like the first feisty debate.

>> his visceral response to attack people on their appearance, short, tall, fat, ugly, my goodness, that happened in junior high. [ applause ] >> reporter: but this time the candidates were better prepared to take on the dominant front-runner, donald trump sparring frequently with jeb bush. >> opposed to casino gambling before, during and after. >> more energy tonight. i like that. >> reporter: a tussle between trump and carly fiorina over alleged business failures when chris christie interjects. >> for the 55-year-old construction worker who doesn't have a job, they could care less about your careers. they care about theirs. >> reporter: this morning many analysts are calling the debate a win for the only woman on the stage, twitter stats show the most tweeted about moments were carly fiorina's emotional appeal against abortion and her response to donald trump's comments in "rolling stone" when he said, look at that face, would anyone vote for that. >> i think women all over the country heard clearly what

mr. trump said. [ applause ] >> reporter: fiorina came into the debate with just 4% in the polls, trump at 27%. analysts think trump's failure to show command of policy in this debate could turn the tables. >> i think people were expecting more so i think he actually hurt himself in the course of this debate. >> reporter: analysts say the former republican front-runner jeb bush did have a pretty good performance in this debate, better than the last time. we'll have to wait and see if that really helps him pick up any momentum. dr. ben carson came into the debate nearly tied with donald trump in a recent poll, but analysts think that he really did not manage to stand out in this debate, that the quiet-spoken neurosurgeon really just faded into the background much of the time. reena. >> the conversation also turned to legalizing marijuana and jeb bush, i think he made it a mission that no presidential candidate ever has during a debate.

always seems every campaign season there is a time when the drug admissions come out. this seems to be it for jeb bush. he admitted on that stage that some 40 years ago when he was a young man he did smoke marijuana, and he did call it a mistake and then went on to talk about the serious challenges this country is facing with drugs. >> waiting to hear what momma bush has to say about that one. bazi kanani live in washington. thank you very much. >> it was certainly a first for a presidential debate and carly fiorina made the most of her first appearance on the main debate stage. capitalizing on her outsider status and highlighting her business accomplishments. >> and she didn't hesitate to go head-to-head with donald trump. with more here's abc's deputy political director shushannah walshe, good morning, shust. >> reporter: it was fight night number two and all eyes going into the scene and debate may have been on donald trump, but it was former hewlett-packard

stole the spotlight. >> she didn't even qualify for the last gop debate but her jabs at donald trump and taking on planned parenthood put her there. hand-to-hand combat. whether trump can keep those soaring poll numbers after his continued attacks will be something to closely watch. marco rubio was the dark horse of the night bringing strong answers and jabs on foreign policy in his family history but other candidates needed a bigger win's more air time and didn't happen for scott walker, tom cruz and mike huckabee. ben carson was one of the surprise winners in his last debate. will the same thing happen to carly fiorina now? well, that remains to be seen. kendis, reena. >> thank you so much. in another gauge of who's benefiting the most from the debate check out these fresh numbers from twitter. >> here's who gained the most

fiorina added 19,000. carson with 18,000 new followers and trump, 10,000. bush and rubio rounding out the top, both adding 6,000 followers. stay with abc news for the latest on the debate later in the pulse, the many expressions of donald trump plus for in-depth analysis on "good morning america." well, the morning's other big powerful story, a deadly earthquake shaking chile. that was the scene in a supermarket when the magnitude 8.3 quake struck off the coast. a million were evacuated. they've been told to stay on high ground until later today. there have been more than a dozen strong aftershocks. officials in the u.s. were issuing tsunami advisories for parts of the california coast and for hawaii. they say all the data indicates no major tsunami, orange county,

they don't expect widespread flooding but are telling everyone to stay off the beach. also in the west, crews are hoping to find a 6-year-old boy caught up in those deadly flash floods on the utah/arizona border. three women and nine children died after their vehicles were swept away and the search for a missing hiker trapped in the floods in zion park's keyhole canyon resumes and six other hikers are dead. new details from california's fire zone. two deaths now confirmed in the butte fire, one a 66-year-old man who refused to evacuate. the fire is 47% contained. well, syrian rebels getting ready for battle has been called a complete failure. it came as the top u.s. general in the middle east admitted there are just four or five trained rebels in the fight, the

approved to have 35400 trained by the end of the year. europe's refugee crisis is heating up. they're going through croatia to reach safe zones and want to avoid hungary which has closed its border. hungarian ryeiot police fought with them. president obama meets today with three american heroes who took do you know a gunman on a train bound for paris. army specialist alek skarlatos and airman spencer stone as well as college student, anthony adler were vacationing in europe when they stopped the attack last month. before coming home they were given france's highest honor. today the president gets a chance to offer his thanks in person. well, no laughing matter on capitol hill. funnyman jon stewart grilling lawmakers. >> and hauled out of class. and placed in handcuffs.

well, jon stewart is back in front of cameras for a cause he's long championed. 9/11 first responders. he was on capitol hill trying to get a permanent extension for a bill that provides health care and other benefits to them. the current bill expires next month. stewart says it's embarrassing that people have to be reminded to do something good for a good that helped so many. >> have to come down here and convince people to do what's right for the illnesses and

because of your heroism and selflessness. >> thousands suffer from respiratory illness due to their work after the attacks. first responders have traveled to washington at least 14 times this year to lobby congress. general motors is close to settling with the justice department over a deadly defect. reports indicate the automaker would pay a fine of $900 million. the defect involving ignition switches is tied to more than 120 deaths. the deal would settle the federal criminal complaint but not cases brought by states and other lawsuits. and the olive garden bringing back the pasta pass starting at 2:00 p.m. the restaurant chain will sell a thousand passes for $100 each. 1,000 family passes at 300 bucks are being sold that allow holders all the pasta, soda, soup and breadsticks they want from early october to a few days before thanksgiving. i cannot imagine the damage it

checking our top stories, round two for the republicans. 11 keys faced off last night, many of them going after donald trump but this time political experts say carly fiorina came out on top. aftershocks continue in chile following a powerful 8.3 magnitude earthquake. a million people have been evacuated. the cause of the tsunami threat, at least five were killed and tsunami advisories in hawaii and california. a top american general says there are only four or five u.s. trained syrian rebels fighting isis. the half a billion dollar program to train those rebels was supposed to have thousands of them ready by the end of this year. today's weather, take a look. showers in the northern rockies. well, pope francis is coming to the u.s. next week with stops to new york, philadelphia and washington and the excitement in those cities reaching a fever pitch. >> the philadelphia phillies this week gave out a pope
