multireligious prayer service at the 9/11 museum. a ride through central park in the pope mobile and a huge catholic mass with a piercing equality. >> he does it all again in philadelphia. philadelphia on lockdown. he's spending one last night in his temporary residence on the east side where he arrived after the mass. >> we have three reports tonight the garden. >> reporter: that's a long day for anybody. you can understand if the 78-year-old pope was worn out after all that. there he was tonight, 20,000 people waiting for him at the garden. he wasn't too tired to minister first to those who needed him most. francis stopped first for the few. for the children ministering to the sick with a papal blessing that for parents was overwhelming. >> i was shaking the whole time.

it didn't go away for 30 or 40 minutes. >> reporter: 17-year-old paul gomez was right there. >> pope francis came over and put his hand on him and everyone started crying. i'm usually not emotional and i teared up. >> reporter: here was the holy father and had sometimes unsettled congregation mingling. the pope who catholics pray for in every mass. >> now here you are. >> reporter: pope francis smiled broadly at that, energized for the chants to preach before the congregation. 20,000 strong inside and even that was just the beginning. the faithful lined the streets outside the garden as well knowing they couldn't get into the mass but content for the moment to be near. inside a traditional roman catholic mass.

this one so special because of the man celebrating it with him. the pope's homily in this arena turned sanctuary focussed on the plight of the urban poor and the peace that comes from service to them. >> god is living in our cities. >> it was really just an uplifting experience seeing all catholics and non-catholics alike coming together. >> i'm happy he come to the united states of america and i'm able to celebrate with him today. >> reporter: in the end a final papal blessing on the way out and a congregation so taken by this close encounter. >> i'm in awe. i can't believe he's physically here. >> reporter: he was physically here and his homily delivered in spanish. pope francis talked about the challenge of living in a big

economic interests and cultures collide and conflict. he urged them to search for answers in their faith and in that very diversity. that, he said, is where the answers are. reporting live from the garden, jim dolan, channel 7 eye witness news. >> one of the most anticipated events was actually the quickest. his pope mobile parade through central park. 80,000 people got a glimpse of the pope passing by in the pope mo bile. most people waited in line three hours to get through security. it lasted just a few minutes. for those who saw him the memory will last a lifetime. >> just by standing in the same city as him, you already feel something. the air feels lighter. the wind feels better and he means the world.

it's the world trade center cross. i've worn it every day for the last 14 years. >> security so tight the last ticketed guest got in moments before the pope passed by. the tsa bringing in extra screeners at the last minute to get everyone through. there was so many emotional moments today but perhaps the ones that brought the greatest moments happened in a visit to a school in east harlem. aj ross outside the temporary residence and it's a moment students will never forget. >> reporter: definitely, sade. from young to old to everyone in between, people were overwhelmed to witness firsthand the um believable magnitude of pope francis today. there were special students from our lady queen of angels in east harlem who got to meet his holiness and humbly asked them

with beaming smiles and arms outstretched students from our lady queen of angels eagerly welcomed proep francis whose contagious spirit of hope and peace is best reflected in the sheer joy of these young faces. students in return shared songs and walked the pontiff through several projects close to their hearts. with some having to give him extra help when it came to using the smart board. >> he was pretty cool. but yet afterwards i thought he was better than cool. he was awesome. >> reporter: while a select few had the opportunity to share some one on one time with his holiness. >> he was nice. he was friendly. he was like an average person that you know, like a friend. >> reporter: it was an overwhelming emotional encounter

>> some much needed rest in deed. aj, thank you. a surprise for pope francis. he paused for an unscheduled with a group of families going through a difficult time. the pope giving his blessing to children suffering from serious illnesses. they're staying at the ronald mcdonald house in manhattan. among them a 10-year-old heart transplant patient who developed cancer after her treatment. >> not even is catholic but everyone believes in a higher god and to have that blessing straight from the pope is unbelievable. >> the nypd, which has a close relationship with the ronald mcdonald house worked with the secret service to arrange the meeting. day five of the six day trip starts tomorrow morning. the plane takes off at 8:40 a.m. >> hits the ground running in philadelphia.

visitors are savoring every moment of expectation before they see pope francis in the flesh. >> i just think the man is an absolute incredible human being. >> it may not happen again. in our lifetime it may not. >> reporter: these are the early arrivals descending on philadelphia before the masses appear this weekend. the tsa setting up 15 check points and they blocked all roads leading to downtown. thousands will climb the equivalent of a 13 story building and getting home will be even harder. when it's dark. many of these people will have walkers or will need a lot of rest. so they may not get back to camden until 9, 10 or 11:00 at night and then they have to find their cars. >> reporter: business owners want to their their customers after police blocked off five

clouds may be a couple degrees lower. 72 is the average, forecasting 74. there are the sunrise and sunset times. a decent weekend ahead. the high clouds dull the sun at times. minor coastal flooding is a concern. a full moon and rain will approach by saturday night. i think we're dry during the daylight hours. clouds compromise seeing the super moon and the lunar eclipse happening. conditions. a couple lower tomorrow and comfortable tonight, 66 white stone and oak woods at 65 on staten island. clouds are thinner to the north and it will will be cooler. a milky white sky tomorrow and high clouds and a filtered sun all day long. lower 70s should do it. busy wind out of the northeast.

you can see the veil of high clouds thinner. high pressure from eastern canada is trying to suppress the cloud cover. a nice job for much of the week. you can see how the rain from the mid atlantic is a sharp cutoff running into a brick wall of dry air. low pressure over the carolinas here and the complimentary easterly flow coming in. also some piling up along the shore. this will hold off the rain for much of the weekend. even upper 40s tomorrow morning. sun and high clouds and same deal through the entire day. we should be in the lower 70s. as we go through sunday the theme will be more sun in the morning and more sun from the city north and east. more clouds in the afternoon to the south but notice it looks like it's staying dry down in philadelphia. maybe a couple light showers. the steady rain to the south and we'll watch that over the weekend and a couple showers sunday night and monday.
