proposed to his girlfriend last weekend, and he said how happy he was, and now they have four children, a full house, and he has not had the easiest couple of years, with the death of a child and divorce, and he was not candid talking about how he uses the struggles, and others to talk about how he is not a coach, but a teacher. >> adam: he had the contract extended and he is signed through 2020 and the max highest paid coach shy of $1 million a year. tops out of the mac. and on the other side urban myer has the biggest, one of the six top paid coaches of the country. >> kelly: yeah, you can see the difference of curtis samuel back at running back, and it is more shake and bake, and elliott is more downhill guy, and that is fine, because like the
7:01 pm
>> adam: five touchdowns by five different players today for ohio state as barrett is a little bit off target on that throw, and nearly a third pick for darius phillips in the fourth game as a defensive back. james clark was the intended target as we have seen some of the second unit guys on offense. >> kelly: and good coverage again. and remember that darius phillips is a speed guy, and when they moved him to the defensive guy, he can flip the hips and cover like that, and nice play once again. nice play by fill the lips. >> adam: just a sophomore develop ing in developing in that position. playing on the near side, and the play on tape done. >> kelly: has this ended any so-called quarterback controversy, because i don't know if there was in urban myers' mind, but there was around the country.
7:02 pm
>> adam: well, we go back to the process that you talked about, and urban miyer said that cardale jones earned the starting job, and he took the spring reps because of the injury to braxton mill miller and the injuries that jth miller was recovering from. i didn't want to anoint guys. you don't the anoint guys at quarterback, which is what he told the media and us, until j.t. barrett beats cardale jones out, it is cardale's job. while the door is open, cardale is the starter, and it is still his job to own and have until somebody else says otherwise seemingly according to urban myer. >> kelly: and it is what happened in the spring and summer that happened.
7:03 pm
time that the head coach said, there is no reason to make a change. >> adam: and the special teams with nearly great coverage. good effort there by ohio state by mclaurin, but into the end zone it goes, and on that pet a 32. >> kelly: and you can see, adam, j.t. barrett would have been my guy. we will see a -- too many player on the field for ohio state. >> adam: the quarterback questions all over the the country, and auburn has quarterback question, and use aging a former under armour all american in shaun white, and how does -- in sean white, and how does that play out? and you are seeing a lot of question marks especially in the s.e.c. when you go into the pac-12, they know the guys and riding them as deep as they can with kessler and rosen and the other
7:04 pm
>> kelly: and you know, throwing 50 times last week against texas tech, and they have to revizsit their identity as well for arkansas, and the starting point for the quarterback situation would have been, barrett at 11-1 gets hurt. when you are healthy again, you get back on the horse, and that is what i have been taught, but it is the spring and the summer with cardale jones that the urban myer is putting his finger on. >> adam: bogan is stumbling forward and inside of 90 seconds now. >> kelly: and remember he stepped into a sportscar flying down the road with three games left, ab he played well, but essentially, he had to keep it in the ditches at this time. barrett helped to put the car in position, and so i would have gone back to 16, but i fully respect the fact that urban myer knows the team better than
7:05 pm
anybody else does, and what happened in the spring and summer is a critical piece of the puzzle. >> adam: and let's not forget that de'veon smith is a big talk, and if you have talked to the coaches or the fans, he is usually the guy that they talk about right after the quarterback, without the big play threat and marshall can become that guy, and samuel and thomas as well showing the ability, but that is an issue. and the offensive line was an issue, and the coaching staff admitted they were an issue in the first three game, and perhaps this game at some point they might consider that as well, so more questions than just barrett versus jones. there was a lot of to answer today, 38 points on the board today, a how comfortable is urban myer? >> kelly: well, he is better, but still looking at the offense that left some points on the field once again. i think that there is certainly work to be done, and you have a championship defense on the other side, so they will allow
7:06 pm
you the make some mistakes offensively, but the stake ss are going up from here. indiana will be able to score the points on seemingly everybody. so offensively, there is still some improvement to be made, but for crying out loud, 4-0, and you are the defending national champions, and there is an awful lot the like about urban myers' group. >> adam: urban myer and p.j. fleck meet at midfield as ohio state goes to 4-0, and western michigan will go to 1-3. the defense continues the play well for the buckeyes, and you would think that it is cardale jones next week adds well. for urban myer who is with olivia myer. >> olivia: coach, cardale with
7:07 pm
career passing yards and are you final li finally seeing the quarterback that you wanted to see? >> well, we are playing better, but the expectation ss are high, but i thought that the receivers played great and we had a couple of receiver shots that i thought that we could have hit, but we played better. >> olivia: and karcardale and j.t., and three receivers, and what do you see? >> well, we need to get better. >> olivia: the offense as a whole a big question mark, and the front five, did you see progress? >> yes, much improved and the front five played well, and zeke play hard and curtis as well, and so we have good weapon, and overall, much better. >> olivia: now, coach, that the preseason schedule is over, how konconfident are you going into the conference schedule? >> very good, but we have to get better. >> adam: and it is big ten play for the rest of the way for the
7:08 pm
as the number one teal,m, but these are going to be difficult matchups. and you will see ohio state and indiana next week. >> kelly: and the defending national champion, and you don't win it in the first four weeks, but you begin to win it now, and urban myer is liking the things that he is beginning to see on the offensive side with guys like that. >> adam: and cardale jones 19 of 33 and two touchdowns and an interception, and 288 yards through the air as ohio state moves to 4-0, and they have won 69 of last 70 at home against ucla and arizona later on tonight, and for kelly and oley

pope francis sweeps into philadelphia on a mission of compassion and hope and the city of brotherly loves opens its arms to the man and his message. a developing story, a rapper in the hospital after a motorcycle crash in northern new jersey. we will hear from the people who rushed to his aid after the accident. >> good evening. i am joe torres. sandra bookman is off. we begin with the pope's triumphant visit to the birth place of america. a live look at benjamin franklin parkway in philadelphia. there you see the pope in the pope mobile, the world meeting of families celebration is right now underway. pope francis is scheduled to take the stage in an hour. earlier this evening about 30,000 people gathered at
7:11 pm
francis spoke about religious freedom and immigration, imploring the crowd not to take liberty for granted. >> this country and each of you, may you be renewed in gratitude for the many blessings and freedom that you enjoy. it has been another extremely day for the 78 year old pontiff. on his way out of manhattan his helicopter circumstantialed ellis island and the statue of liberty. before taking off from jfk airport, the pope stumbled a little as he climbed the stairs beginning his journey to the final stop of his visit. he was okay. we begin with bill. >> reporter: how are you? good evening from philadelphia. we are at the benjamin frankly parkway. below us the pope is passing as he is making one big sweep over this giant parkway. the crowds have been lining
7:12 pm
just standing there all day waiting for this moment. the stage is set for tonight's big concert. it is shut down for all business that is not pope related. they were expecting about a half million people. we haven't finished counting but it looks to us that they're not to what their expectation was. as for the pope of course he is not counting. he is clearly basking in all this. he handed in philadelphia this morning greeted by a band playing the theme to rocky. there is philadelphia museum of art where rocky was shot. remember that scene of him walking up the steps. he wasn't off the airport grounds long before he ordered the fiat to stop, got out, kissed a boy with cerebral palsy. then he was off to the mass at the cathedral basilica of saints peter and paul. in his first public speech he advises hispanics and
7:13 pm
be a afraid of your tradition. this is as each generation becomes more simulated into american culture. he also once again took up the banner of women. no pope before has spoken so much about equality of women in the church. >> in a particular way, it means valuing the immense contribution which women, lay, and religious have made and continue to make to the life of our communities. >> you see the pope again coming out of franklin parkway and the crowd is just erupting below us. we see him waving his hands. he is clearly energized by all this. the basis as we look at the pope and the pope's trip to the u.s. is called the world meeting of families. indeed catholics from around the world are here and that includes folks from the tri- state, many are down in the crowd where you are looking.
7:14 pm
it includes folks from the tri- state. a lot of people from the tri- state are here. we are talking to them. josh spent the day with some of them today. can you hear me? you are going to see the pope in a little bit, i guess. >> reporter: actually the papal motorcade, the procession emerged from just behind this stage which is at the very top of the ben franklin parkway. that's where it came from and then it traveled down the parkway toward your location. the pope is now out of view here but he will be coming back up the other side and taking the stage for a program that should last a couple hours here this evening. the tri-state area is heavily represented in the delaware valley. hundreds of thousands of people from all over have had to run a gaunt let to get to philly but they have been smiling every step of the way. today in philadelphia's iconic ben franklin bridge they marched, sang, and prayed. six bus loads from a church in
7:15 pm
excitement for they were about to see the holy father. >> it's a feeling you can't describe. you have to be here. i can only describe this feeling with a big smile on my face. >> five square miles are off limit to incoming traffic. the bridge over the delaware river became a highway of humanity as men and women young and old completed a pilgrimage that was not to be posed. >> i am having a popetastic weekend. >> he was at the mass yesterday and it was still dark when he drove to camden. he would have walked to the end of the earth to see the pontiff for a second day. >> we believe in the pope. we believe in everything that he stands for and so that's very important for us. >> i get to spend time with my family. >> reporter: this nine year old, her sister and their parents made the trip to see the pope and to see him together.
7:16 pm
meeting of families, a global conference that focuses on strengthening those delicate bonds. >> we will never get an opportunity like this again. >> reporter: from michelle from new jersey it is a cause important enough for her and her friend to volunteer at the summit all week. this afternoon they took a break and staked out prime territory on independence mall for the papal parade to see francis in the flesh. >> i guess because it makes it real. yes, you see him on tv and on the internet. you read stories. but seeing him in person is an entirely different experience. >> reporter: these people are about to have that experience for themselves. you can see them eagerly awaiting the reemergence of the papal motorcade as pope francis arrives here at what is a vip area with ticketed seating at the top of the ben franklin parkway. these are the best seats in the house. there are jumbo trons throughout the parkway and through center city for the hundreds of thousands expected
7:17 pm
we will be here with the latest later. for now we are live at the top of the ben franklin parkway. we'll send it back to you. >> a lot of excitement, josh. thank you. see you tonight at 11:00. this has a different feel to be honest than it did thursday and from i in new york. in philadelphia, this area is really the main venue. mike, pan into that crowd if you would. these are people who have been standing in these large groups on various sides of the parkway, standing very calmly all day with simply nothing to do. they have been so quiet. in that way, i thought it really was apparent to me this isn't just the city of brotherly love, it is also a city today of orderly love. with one exception, one incident, a man taken into custody for what cops and secret service call acting and asking suspicious questions about the pope's route and what security was there. he was later released. that's a really good example i think of how tight security is.
7:18 pm
every person here is going through intense security screening by tsa and secret service. tonight the pope is speaking to the crowd. you heard them cheering for him a few seconds ago. there will be music by some big names like aretha franklin. it is another long day and night for 78 year old pope francis. there is no question, joe, he seems energized by it all. we will wrap it from philadelphia. we will be back at 11:00 on eyewitness news with the latest on this big event on this saturday including what the pope has to say. i will be posting various things on my facebook and night as they become news >> thank you. the pope is making memories in philadelphia. thanks to bill and josh. stay with eyewitness news and abc news for our continuing coverage of the pope's visit to philadelphia. do not forget to send your pictures of the pope's visit using #abc7ny.
