now, new york's number one news. channel 7 eye witness news. >> a final blessing and a wave. pope francis bids farewell to the u.s. after a historic three city trip. his final day packed. first he reached out to those in need of his compassion. >> god weeps. for the sexual abuse of children. >> and those in need of guidance. then a mass before hundreds of thousands where he spoke of the miracle of love and families. the trip brought millions together. the people's pope inspired faith and hope across the country and ever so humble he ended the trip with his now familiar words.

>> good evening, everyone i'm sandra bookman. >> i'm joe torres. it has been a whirlwind trip for the pope and he made an impact. he left philadelphia around 8:00 tonight and gave one final wave out of the plane window. >> he met joe biden family and he thanked everyone who made the trip possible. the historic visit culminated with a mass in front of a >> bill ritter and josh einiger are in the city of brotherly love while sefan kim reports from camden, new jersey. we begin tonight with bill. >> reporter: joe and sandra, we should all at the age of 78 have the energy to pull off the kind of tour deforce that pope francis showed the country this week. whether you're religious or not or agree with him, this man is

in charge of 1.2 billion catholics around the world on this trip making americans think and challenging them to become better people. in this final event here in city of brotherly love. the pontiff in his pope mobile for his last ride in it during his first trip to the u.s. nonstop cheers for pope francis for people who stood up for up to ten hours doing nothing but wait toing get a glimpse of this man. several signs he appeared weary. he was helped down the stairs and during communion he closed his eyes. was it reflection? folks would forgive him if it was something more. a relatively short homily asking the crowd a profound question. >> this action that we're invited to participate in leads us to ask ourselves how are we trying to live this way in our homes, in our societies?

and generous stewards of the human and material entrusted to you. >> reporter: this pope never hesitant to ask the questions that make us think. the pope is over the atlantic and landing just before most of us here will awake sunrise, which brings us to the people that used to be behind me for this last mass tonight and the reaction. josh einiger near the stage where the pope twice this weekend raised people's hope and now they're taking the stage down. >> reporter: yeah, they've made progress in a matter of hours. pope francis's entire trip was built around tonight's open air mass on ben franklin's parkway. the physical setup will be long gone in a matter of days.

pilgrmage, the memories will last a lifetime. this was the grand finale. the moment of truth for hundreds of thousands of catholics who packed the parkway and wrapped attention to see their beloved pope francis. >> it was a breathtaking experience. >> reporter: for ernest it was heavenly. he's part of a group of vietnam selected with his family and stand on stage. >> we did say to the pope we really love you our holy father. please f you ever have the chance, visit us in vietnam. our churches and our people actually meet him. >> reporter: his view was hard to meet. there was no bad seat in this house. 6:00 a.m. to stand in a sea of strangers united for one. >> when we joined in for the our father, we were silent before and we held hands and it was a it was so beautiful.

weekend of celebration for the masses in philly where despite security the world meeting of families went off without a hitch. onlookers protesting a tent that obstructed their view but workers quickly cleared it away. tonight as they race to return the city to normalcy, few of the people think about anything but happy thoughts. karen worried it might have been a tough and crowded journey but wound up on a commuter train with 12 passengers. she's happy she took the chance to witness history. >> i'm glad i came. if you want to do something, do it. >> reporter: there has been a lot of controversy among the local business community here in philadelphia for decisions city leaders made about security and how to shut down the city. business leaders and restaurant

owners took to facebook to skewer them for destroying their business for the weekend. that will come in the next coming days and week, the people who were here for the weekend left they say with the opinion that this city was a city of brotherly love and a great host. we're live in philadelphia, josh einiger, channel 7 eye witness news. >> josh, thank you. some great perspective for our viewer this is weekend. hundreds of thousands of people stuck in the secured zone, for them getting out was a long haul. for many it meant heading to camden and walking two miles across the bridge. the span connecting pennsylvania to new jersey, sefan kim on the jersey side of the bridge with their long commute home. >> reporter: well, bill, it was a long trek for fans of the pope that headed in. several miles from this side. for the faithful it was so worth it.

i just felt an awe and just felt the holy spirit, man. i felt emotional and it was wonderful being there with so many people. such a cool vie. >> reporter: for the hundreds of thousands who turned out to the city of brotherly love to visit the pope in person, the long journey through a city on lockdown was pay. >> it wowed me. my family was here and it was so much fun. >> reporter: with philadelphia a frozen zone it was no easy task. ben franklin bridge was one way to get there. shut down to vehicular traffic so the faithful could walk more than four miles. >> it was really amazing to see the pope in america. that doesn't happen too often. it's a once in a lifetime experience. >> reporter: the huge numbers expected to use the bridge turned out to be smaller than expected. 2200 took the crossing and more people came out to take a stroll

than to get to the mass. >> it was a good journey going through the ben franklin bridge and no one shouting at us to move. >> reporter: for camden county police everyone having a good time was all they could ask for. >> it went off really without any issues. for us, we saw the crowds. we were happy. people were here and it was a celebrating. >> reporter: police had initially planned to keep the bridge closed until noon tomorrow. because of the lighter than expected crowds it'll be open for the monday morning commute. no one is walking on the bridge. it'll be reopened by 4:00 a.m. tomorrow and crews can break down and move on out of here. in camden, sefan kim, channel 7 eye witness news. >> good for them. it's a very busy bridge. thank you.

philadelphia's largest jail. pope francis met with 100 inmates at the correctional facility. he spoke with the power of redemption and encouraged the men and women to use their time to keep their faith and get their lives back on track. after praying with the inmates, the pope walked audience and shook hands with each of the prisoners. >> pope francis began his last day in america meeting with victims of child sex abuse within the church. he spoke about the topic this morning at st. charles seminary. he sai abuse of children. in an unprecedented move he promised to create a new vatican tribunal to prosecute bishops accused of covering up or failing to act in cases of child substance abuse of a priest. >> in one other moment we wanted to share with you. this is light hearted but great.

breaking news now, crews are battling a three alarm fire at a business in west chester county right now. authorities say that fire broke out at the sprain brook nursery in greenville about 9:00 this evening. last year that same nursery and gardening center was damaged by a fire when a propane tank exploded. crews from several fire department are on the scene of tonight's fire. so far no injuries have been reported. even though the pope has left and on his way to europe, brace yourself for a new week of gridlock. world leaders are gathered in new york city for the united nations general assembly. president obama arrived this morning. he committed the u.s. to a plan to eliminate poverty and hunger around the world. >> from ebola to syria, we're

don't worry, we'll be back to the usual congestion and delays and holiday gridlock will be upon us. lucy yang for channel 7 eye witness news. >> thank you so much for that reminder, lucy. new at 11, a woman in brooklyn finds herself trying to prove she's still alive. she got a letter from the new york city fraud bureau telling her she'll no longer receive medicaid because she's dead. she's worried other benefits may be cut off as well. mallory hoff is live with more. >> reporter: sandra, this is where selma has live and had received mail for the past 30 years. she could not believe the letter she received recently. at first she thought it was a joke. when she realized it wasn't she knew she needed help immediately. new york city's bureau of fraud investigation stated in a letter that selma's medicaid has been cut off because she's dead.

you. >> reporter: the 87-year-old cancer survivor and widow sat down with her at her apartment and she's had to cancel a doctor's appointment. she takes 14 medications daily. if the mistake is not corrected it could have grave consequences. >> how am i going to survive if i can't get medicine? >> reporter: she said convincing people is harder than she could imagine. a representative said we're looking into this case and if there's an error we'll fix it. >> i'm dealing with a bureaucracy and they're not fast to fix anything. >> reporter: now a vibrant senior says she's deathly afraid because she can't afford to pay up for a mistake that wasn't hers. what are you going to do if this doesn't come through? >> i have no idea right now.

>> there is some change ahead. much needed rain potentially. we're looking skyward at the super moon, blood moon, lunar eclipse. a super moon is a situation where the moon makes its closest approach to the earth in the entire year and coinciding with a full lunar eclipse. the next time these events happen where you get a super moon and a lunar eclipse is october 8, 2033. get out and enjoy it tonight. this was a view as the eclipse began. that's when the moon was falling into the earth's shadow. it went into total eclipse in the last couple hours and it's coming out on the other side of the shadow of the earth. you see the sliver of the moon reappearing. right now in the city there's a lot of cloud cover out there as you can see on the roof cam. temperature is 67 and the

the pope, in fact, barely wheels up before the set start today come down on the ben franklin parkway. the sight of the world meeting of families, which was the grand finale. in fact the whole reason for the pope's historic visit to the place. officials say early estimates approach nearly a million visitors from around the world who came to see pope francis celebrate his open air mass in a town that hasn't seen a papal visit in four decades. people of different backgrounds and countries and religions. they stood shoulder to shoulder united as one. >> it's a humbling experience. knowing that my inperfections make us a perfect, perfect world. it's just beautiful. >> reporter: you thought we had bad street closures in our town, get a load of this. this was the image on google

a rude awakening for campers in australia when a giant

sinkhole opens up in the middle of the night. the ten foot deep crater filled with water measures nearly 500 feet in length. authorities evacuated around 140 people from the campground but there were no reports of injuries. the sinkhole, however, swallowed a car, a caravan and a camping trailer. scary moments for gop presidential candidate when a stage curtain nearly fell on top of her during a speech in texas. an audience member recorded it on a cell phone. she was able to move out of the way before the curtain and the rods crashed onto the stage. no one was injure and had the candidate finished taking audience questions after the incident. an expectant mother encounters the unexpected when she gives birth on a sidewalk in downtown brooklyn. a viewer capture it had scene as

reflects off of the moon. just some incredible shots there this evening. if you were lucky enough to have clearing for a while, areas north of the city were. 67 at 9 in the morning and a lot of clouds around tomorrow and there could be a stray shower or two. much of the time will be rain free and a peek or two at noon. shy of 80 before falling to the low 70s by evening. temperatures generally in the upper 60s and 50s well north and west. it's a pretty deep easterly flow ocean. i want to show you the progression of things here in the future cast. kind of a cloudy day tomorrow and a stray shower or two. a front moves in and interacts and there could be heavier downpours developing tuesday night and lasting into the day on wednesday. here's the accuweather forecast. could be a shower tuesday morning and rain is much more
