moving through the south, leaving behind dramatic damage. entire backyards flooded. >> check out this video. a pumpkin patch washed out by the rain. hundreds of pumpkins floating away as the rain continues to fall. what can we expect from these storms? meteorologist lee goldberg at the weather wall. >> many of us will see much more rain in the next 24 hours than the entire month of september. wet city streets as the rain just getting going. heavy in some spots. we're a lock for the warmest september all time. now we're going to get some rain. flood watches were up. we still think the heaviest rain is going to be north and west. with that said, there's still going to be downpours over long island, jersey shore, connecticut. some heavy downpours. and the rain is filling in on radar. the real show is just off to the south and west, just getting to philly right now. after midnight, moves in to our area. i think the peak intensity is right when we're going on air. bill will be watching this as a

heavy rain goes through new york city, long island, northwest suburbs as well. i think the heaviest probably by midmorning will start pushing off to the north and east, certainly showery by late in the morning by the afternoon. the weekend weather won't be determined by the gulf of mexico moisture and now strengthening joaquin. the advisory came out from the hurricane center. the track has been closer from the east coast. meanwhile, here's what you need to know. half inch by late morning. upwards of 2 or 3 inches north and west, where flooding is more likely. we can see it in nassau county as well. second round of rain thursday night in to friday. third round will depend on joaquin. no matter what it prolonged onshore wind. coastal flooding and beach erosion. that could be a serious situation. bracing for the worst, storm prep is already underway on the jersey shore.

the mayor tweeting out this picture of crews building sand dunes. aj ross is there. >> already bracing for whatever mother nature may have up her sleeve. towns up and down the jersey shore are taking no chances. crews are building a protective barrier. >> reporter: with storms expected to pound the northeast for the next few days and joaquin potentially threatening off the coast, dozens of towns are wasting no time taking precautions and urging residents to be prepared. >> we're not going to unnecessarily trigger the alarm but certainly we want people to be aware. >> reporter: 400 homes were destroyed by sandy. emergency planning committee meeting was held tuesday afternoon to discuss a strategy for the coming days. >> the wind speeds relative to the storm and that will determine what level of

about the latest outbreak of legionnaires' disease in the bronx. three new cases tonight. the total now at 10 and tonight we're told seven cooling towers near the outbreak have tested positive for legionella bacteria, towers that just last month were cleaned under mayor de blasio's new law. what exactly is going on? n.j. burkett in the morris park section with the latest. >> the city has released a list of the towers. we'll have a map of the towers in a moment. all are being disinfected, if they've not been disinfected already. yes, there is concern here in the bronx because people in the bronx thought they were done with legionnaires' disease. >> reporter: beneath the cooling towers in morris park, residents are feeling vulnerable tonight. from the local chase bank to einstein medical college, even layman high school. seven locations in all, all in the same general area. all with cooling towers testing positive for legionella.

>> i never even heard of that. that's crazy. >> it makes you feel like you can't stay in your own neighborhood or go to a hospital in your own neighborhood. >> reporter: health officials have struggled to identify the source since last week. after several residents arrived in local emergency rooms and later tested positive for legionnaires' disease. nine remain hospitalized tonight. the youngest is 45. and each had an underlying medical condition. but health officials say each of the towers had been disinfected weeks ago which has the local community board chairman concerned. >> now you're talking about a month later and they're already infected. that's scary. >> reporter: health officials say residents should be vigilant and get treated if they develop symptoms. >> i pray we don't have another out break. what i tell the people of the bronx right now is this is nowhere near what happened over the summer. >> absolutely right, this is

not considered an outbreak, at least not so far. to be clear, those three new cases are patients who are already in the hospital. their lab results came back and their illnesses were confirmed. there are no additional cases we're aware of tonight and again, all of those towers that have been identified are being cleaned if they've not been cleaned already. live tonight in the bronx, n.j. burkett, channel 7 eyewitness news. we have some breaking news to tell you about, a series of desperate last minute appeals to stay the execution of the only woman on death row in the state of georgia. the u.s. supreme court moments ago getting yet another request to stop the execution of kelly gissendaner, this after denying her request earlier tonight. protesters have been waiting outside the building where she was set to death by lethal injection. she was convicted of murder in 1997 for conspiring to kill her husband.

mother is accused of throwing her newborn baby out the window. jim dolan at the scene in the west fordham section with surprising new information in this case. >> it is a remarkable development. we learned tonight that jennifer berry spent two years working at acs as a child protection specialist, a child welfare specialist. it's not clear if she quit or was fired. what's clear is tonight she is charged with the murder of her own baby girl. >> reporter: 33-year-old jennifer berry was led from the 52nd precinct tonight charged with the murder of her own newborn baby girl. a baby born and murdered within minutes or seconds, a horrifying crime that left neighbors struggling to summon the words. >> it's real repulsive. there could have been other ways that could have been handled. >> reporter: the building super whose wife found the baby's body

in the courtyard behind their building did not want to talk tonight and some who saw berry taken from the murder scene yesterday made their own judgments about her. >> i don't know if she really even know what she did. the look on her face was like the devil was in her. i'm sorry but that's what it was. >> there's people out here that want kids. there could have been anywhere you could have brung them. you didn't have to drop them out the window. that's killing. a sin. >> reporter: some in the building left a small remembrance tonight. this will be hard to forget. when the police department sent out information on the case, it said in part the victim has been female. there is no name. she didn't live one. >> berry apparently told police officers the baby was still born, that it never breathed, but the medical examiner determined today the baby was born alive, that it breathed for

threw that baby out a seven-floor window. reporting live from the west fordham section of the bronx, jim dolan, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> so tragic. happening tomorrow, a last minute attempt to prevent a federal government shutdown expected to be approved by the house and senate just before a deadline of midnight. the temporary spending agreement would keep the government running through december 11th. they expect a long-term budget back to get underway soon. the temporary spending bill will not include a push by conservative republicans to cut off federal funding of planned parenthood. the group's president facing a barrage of questions but not stumbling, instead asking why her group is being investigated instead of the anti-abortion advocates who secretly videotaped people talking about fetal tissue for research which is legal. >> it's offensive and cat

to get rid of them. a nail salon robbed at gunpoint in the frightening crime caught on camera. a suspect, a customer getting a manicure. police in philadelphia say after the man got his nails done on sunday, he pulled off a sawed off shotgun when he was asked to pay. workers rushed for cover. the man hurriedly went through drawers, getting away with cell phones and cash. fortunately no one was hurt. police looking for the bold burglars who targeted another nail salon and a diner. the thieves breaking in to the salon in yonkers about midnight on monday. that so they could drill a hole in its wall and then get in to georgia's luncheonette next door. they stole cash and cigarettes. regular customers were dismayed to hear the news. >> this is planned. you don't just go to a basement door and break through another wall. i've seen it in tv, but i've never seen it like this. >> maybe they got the idea from tv. police say they're looking

for at least two suspects. new at 11:00, air quality testing coming to nail salons across new york city. the city's public advocate is launching a pilot program. lamps will be fitted with air quality sensors. the information gathered will be shared with health officials, customers, salon managers and the workers themselves. a private equity firm is paying for the program. the staten island ferry expanding its service. they want to run every half hour around the clock. there will be added trips on work days and three additional weekend departures are being added between 3:00 and 6:00 a.m. they'll also run every half hour on holidays. brooklyn borough hall tonight filled with music and the celebration of hispanic heritage month. brooklyn nights feeling the beat as they sample traditional cuisine. eric adams sponsoring this event, noting the census bureau found 1 in 5

in to standing water, turn around, don't drown is always the idea. you don't know how high that water is and doesn't take much to cause you problems or stall out. 87% humidity. south wind at 7 and the high is 83. 13 degrees above average. only 5 away from a record high. rainfall, .03. so far a lot more to go. a cloudy wet wednesday, especially in the morning. we've already had a half inch in islip. heavy downpours have gone over long island. so long, 80s. we've been lucky to get out of the 50s by the time we get in to friday. heavy rain at 7:00 in the morning, especially from the city north and east at that hour. by noon time and in to the afternoon just some light rain, occasional showers, maybe a couple of isolated downpours with a front coming through, gusty northeast wind developing in to tomorrow night. lighter showers, cloudy skies. mist and drizzle. we've got downpours that were near greenwich to

the radar really filling in. it's pouring over philly and trenton. you can see the circulation right here. it lock like long island, jersey shore, and connecticut as well. this cold front stalls over us and becomes the focus for more rain as the week wears on. look at this peaking around early commute time. be very, very careful. then just showery during the afternoon. tomorrow night in to thursday things are light until gulf moisture gets scooped up by this jet stream and we get another steady area of rain on friday which will start to have a little connection to some of joaquin's moisture. this storm is on the verge of becoming a hurricane. as it heads toward the bahamas, it could become a cat 2 storm with winds up to 100 miles per hour. here's the adjustment to the storm track. a little bit more to the west which is a scarier look for us. just looking at some of the computer charts, it may favor that

western side of the cold where you're looking at more midatlantic here. that would still be tough for us as we've got gusty winds, a lot of coastal flooding, beach erosion and rain. still a question of whether this is all joaquin or just a piece of the storm headed to our south. we'll be watching that over the next few days. looks like we'll have some impact over the weekend. in terms of rainfall amounts, through tomorrow morning, 1 to 2 and a half inches north and west. up to an inch at the coast and a little bit more during the afternoon hours. a rough ride in. rain heavy at times. flooding, north and west. breezy and humid. for it -- tomorrow heavy rain in the afternoon hours. thursday, light rain. gets heavier at night again in to friday. windy, damp, lighter rain saturday only to get heavier again as we watch joaquin. bill evans will have an update tomorrow morning. up next, could that daily dose of calcium really be bad for you?

reunion between a burn patient and nurse that get this. i was at my shop tied up with a customer when i realized the time. i had to get to the bank before it closed, so i made a break for it. when i got out it was almost closing time. traffic was bad. i knew i was cutting it close. but it was ok.

i use td bank. it's got the longest hours and stays open an extra ten minutes every day. i'm sid. and i bank human at td bank. in tonight's health alert, are calcium supplements worth it? taking calcium can lead to constipation and kidney stones. a review of multiple studies shows the benefits are limited. taking calcium increased bone density by only 1% or 2% over five years. and they were no less likely to have a fracture. an emotional reunion between a former burn patient and the nurse who cared for her as an infant. this is the first time amanda has seen her former nurse, susan berger, first time in nearly four decades. first meeting at a hospital in albany were documented in a series of touching photos in 1977. the photos helped her get through
