central park. pouring out here right now, steadiest rain of the day, down to 49. that's the first 40s since may. the peak wind gusts, 45 in philadelphia. around our area, mostly 30s. shore. weekend. the rain takes a backseat by tomorrow. coastal flood warning on the jersey shore. new york city, i do think will have some moderate to major coastal flooding in southern ocean county. 50 miles an hour, and 10-foot waves are breaking all across the area causing beach erosion. i talked about the major coastal flooding causing moderate property damage. you see the study rainfall. really right along i- 95 near new brunswick. lower hudson valley, also into parts of fairfield county. likes to the north. rain to the south has to rotate through overnight.

parts of the area could see an additional inch of rainfall. heavy rain focusing down to the carolinas. up to one to 2 feet of rain. there is joaquin right now. finally making a move to the north. intensity has peaked. now still a major category three hurricane. now moving to the north and will accelerate. projected track, a save track where some 450 miles off our shoreline by monday. just some weight accident early next week. no direct impact. here's what you need to know. pockets of heavy rain, be very careful when you travel. coastal flooding becomes the major concern over the next five high tide cycles through sunday night. get used to these gusty winds. they won't back off. meanwhile it's something out here. we'll have the seven-day forecast in just a few minutes. >> we'll see you in a few minutes. now to our reporters out in the storm. parts of the jersey shore getting slammed. water in ocean city covering the roadways and sidewalks.

2 feet of water expected on the roads by the end of high tide. jeff smith with that part of our coverage. he is getting windblown. jeff? >> reporter: i'm getting windblown, rain blasted and sandblasted out here. this is the manasquan inland. we've been seeing these massive waves coming into the inland during the day today. right behind me, atlantic ocean is an ocean that's going to be threatening this community all weekend. the jersey shore is taking the brunt of the storm complete with 40 mile-per-hour winds, torrential downpours and an angry atlantic ocean. high tide at midday forced waters onto the streets in manasquan, but it could've been worse. >> manasquan dodged a major bullet today with the wind and the tides that could have been much worse than it is. >> it's very rough.

but we've seen water come crashing over here. people getting knocked down. so it's been much worse. >> reporter: tomorrow's tide is expected to be at least as high. >> that would be the sixth straight high tide with the wind blowing out of the northeast. so we have potential for another foot maybe. >> reporter: flooding on the concerned than on the oceanfront. >> with the wind blowing out of the northeast, it doesn't let the water drain out of the back bay. water keeps coming in. multiplies. >> reporter: waves of six at 10 feet will cause beach erosion sunday. the borough of belmar is prepared. >> we've been very aggressive about our preparation. once we heard there was our way. we've been building up sand dunes surges. guys who would welcome these

pushing up on the rocks. all coming in here to hang out and eat. we're trying to feed them. >> reporter: what we've been noticing, water keeps pouring into manasquan inlet. manasquan inlet feeds into these back base. as the gentleman was saying before, the back bays don't have any time to exit that water because the waves keep coming on shore and that wind keeps coming from the ocean. it's something we're going to be watching all we. coastal flood warning in effect until 6:00 p.m. on sunday. many more high tide cycles to go . live here in manasquan, new jersey, jeff smith for channel 7 eyewitness news. >> looks so ugly out there, jeff. alumni -- long island, wet and windy weather. this video is from robert moses of fire island. a high surf advisory until sunday evening. coastal flooding and beach erosion are possible.

eyewitness news reporter stacey sager is in the town of freeport. stacy? >> reporter: it's a soaking rain and a stiff wind out here right now now. making it kind of raw, but good news is the street flooding, people are so accustomed to, has subsided for now. residence around here know all too well that if the storm picks up later, this block in particular known as south ocean avenue, could live up to its name. >> it's hard. it's hard. we love it here. >> reporter: hard to love a day like this with pounding rain and puddles growing with the tide. freeport residents who have sandy in the back of their minds feeling like they dodged a bullet this time time, nevertheless -- >> nervous. nervous to say the least. we've been through it. it's just a nor'easter. we don't know what it is. we're just hoping that, i think around midnight is high tide again. we've got to get our cars out

>> reporter: just east of here at robert moses beach, public officials gathered today, also fully aware things could've been much worse. but fire island remains a very big concern, post sandy. >> it acts as a protector for this island, it was destroyed. it has not been restored yet. >> reporter: for those who deal in disaster preparedness, the unpredictability of joaquin was a good practice run. here at nassau university medical center, extra generators are maintained and extra food and water usually four days of it, now stocked for two weeks. >> so that if there was something as we saw in sandy where hospitals were flooded and had to be evacuated, we could handle that. we have that surge capacity here at this hospital. >> reporter: and so the good news is folks did kind of start preparing for the potential of joaquin, so that makes them prepared for this. areas to watch out for,

they include several freshmen students and a teacher. police also identified the gunman as 26-year-old chris mercer. this as stories of heroism are emerging. army veteran chris mintz, that man right there, was shot several times while classmates. today, leaders in oregon are focusing on supporting the victims and healing the community. >> one of the hardest things anyone will have to do. something that we hope would never happen anywhere. much less our community. >> tonight, six victims remain in the hospital. the investigation is ongoing. the battle over gun control once again front and center after the massacre in oregon. 142 school shootings since sandy hook. this was the 45th this year. tonight for the 16th time, president obama speaking about mass gun shootings, but this time with greater urgency and anger.

11 candidates plus the vice president condemning the violence, 10 of them using twitter to do it. the big question now, will this gun massacre be the one that change? dave evans has the latest in the newsroom. >> short answer to that question is probably no, it will not. every time we see one of these mass shootings, newtown,, or charleston, polls show that americans clamor for more gun control but over time as we get further from a shooting incident , that sentiment wanes. many americans think that our current gun laws are sufficient. then there is the powerful nra. bottom line, because of all that, new gun-control in this congress, unlikely. >> there's been another mass shooting in america. >> when the president spoke about oregon, he was angry. this photo taken just moments after he learned of the news showed his frustration. late today obama vowed he will keep fighting for tougher gun laws.

>> this will not change until the politics changes. and the behavior of elected officials changes. >> it keeps happening again and again. and not much changes. >> it's just a flood of painful memories that hits me and just knocks the wind out of me completely. >> nicole hockley lost her 6- year-old son dylan in the sandy hook massacre. after that incident, it seemed congress would enforce stricter gun control laws. it did not happen. >> americans are dying every single day from something that is completely preventable. so why wouldn't we make that a priority? >> he's in a classroom. going to be the southeast side. >> but following yesterday's shooting, many republicans said the answer is not money -- more gun control laws. not work. there's nothing criminals like more than unarmed victims. >> gun control only works for

normal law-abiding citizens. doesn't work for crazies. >> in oregon at a vigil last night, many pushed for tougher gun laws even though they know that's almost impossible in this congress. >> you would think that at one point the american people would say say, enough is enough. i mean, how many gruesome scenes to we have to see on tv to get this political system to act? >> nicole hockley has advocated for more conversation and a better way to identify troubled people who turn to guns. she says the best way to do that is for all americans to write and call their congressmen and keep demanding change. governor cuomo says this should be the number 1 or number 2 issue in politics right now. what to do about so many guns in our country? there is no information about the children who went missing in the bronx. they were found and they are safe tonight. that coming from the nypd a few

developing story out of new jersey. the bridge gate scandal sparking other investigations. tonight, governor christie's transportation commissioner said he plans to resign this month. jamie foxx used to work with united airlines, announced his intent to resign today. fox is part of the tangled web surrounding an aborted effort to fly to a atlantic cities airport. a night to forget to her first performance, a man in the audience interrupted and started screaming at her. he ended up getting escorted out by security. not before throwing a bouquet of flowers at the actress' -- at the actresses onstage. >> i recognized the guy. he was talking really loudly. i thought, i would like to see the play.

it's really ugly out there today. but it could have been so much worse this weekend. >> for people on the coast, we heard stacey sager's report. is this a nor'easter? is it not? it doesn't matter. it's not your classic nor'easter. it's indirectly joaquin, wind keeps funding million -- funneling in. rain, gusty wind, nasty commute home. getting a good soaking, much- needed rain. it will be nice to see our reservoirs come up a little bit. not totally drought busting. we're coming up with another inch and a half here. about three or 4 inches over the last couple days. 49 degrees right now. very chilly the high today.

rainfall, 0.6, 1 inch in the jersey shore, could push 2 inches on long island. more as we go through the overnight overnight. upper 40s right here, right around 50s, 45 in monticello right now. wind gusts close to 30 miles an hour at jfk. along the coast, winds are gusting over 30. localized over 40. not going surprised -- not going to be surprised to see, if you missed jeff smith earlier, winds were definitely gusting over 40 miles per hour. heaviest rain is first part of the night. then the rain will become lighter. wind, rain, apache, like tomorrow, not a seven yesterday. heaviest right now, the area knifing through parts of western ocean, monmouth county, headed over to staten island. really going to be focused along i- 95 and some of that is going to pick it westward. we have to go through this and

and the rain will shift to our south over the carolinas. it's like a fire hose coming in from joaquin and tropical moisture. we'll change our focus from rainfall to coastal flooding over the weekend. the next high tide cycle will start just after our show tonight. and before midnight, then go through about 4:00 in the morning along the connecticut coast line. during his high tide cycle, at least minor coastal flooding and moderate along the jersey shore. southern jersey shore, major coastal flooding. there is joaquin. good news is we're seeing a little less structure now. we're seeing some weakening, major cat three but starting to weaken. acceleration to the north, that's the most important part. it will accelerate out into the atlantic. with all the scares of the mid- atlantic or northeast, 400 miles offshore, maybe 450 on monday. coastal concern is the idea over the weekend. accuweather forecast, wind
