police know just how tragic a situation this could have become. shortly after 8:00 this morning, fully armed police stormed this public housing building near the scene and escorted out this unidentified man in handcuffs. it was the beginning of the end for an ordeal that began about 10:45 last night. >> fortunately, none of our three officers. all of whom were engaged in the shooting, no injuries there other than being treated for the -- the ringing in the ears. good work on the part of the officers. proactive and fortunately ended well for them. >> reporter: three men were near the corner of north portland avenue and park avenue involved in some kind of dispute last night. when they were confronted by three plains clothed cops in an unmarked car. that's when at least two of the suspects suddenly began firing striking the car numerous times but not the officers inside. investigators marked the bullet holes on the vehicle and police released the picture of the .45 caliber begin they believe was used in the incident.

it was found under a car near the scene. >> got to get better because these young kids really have to start taking care of where they live it instead of destroying it and complaining about it. no sense. >> reporter: the officers returned fire and is suspects fled -- the suspects fled on foot. one of them a 23-year-old man was eventual lirassed at -- eventually arrested at beth israel center. he had a gunshot wound to the leg. the other two were found a short time later. >> we always see the commercials, 10:00 you know, do you know where your children are? fine example of did you know where your child was at when he was out shooting? >> reporter: now just a few minutes ago, chief of detectives robert bias wrapped up a press conference along with commissioner bratton. both addressed the crime. the smooter one of them in the case is now been identified as keyshaun smith who lives in the area is and is on parole.

another two shot four more rounds at police. the second gun hasn't yet been recovered but again bottom line this could have been a whole lot worse, reporting live in brooklyn, rob nelson, eyewitness news. turning now to the fiery crash on the new jersey turnpike. the road reopened for the morning commute 13 hours after the deadly accident. and right before that happened, video shows the tanker truck swerving to avoid hitting a mattress on the road. new jersey reporter anthony johnson in rutherford right now with more on the story, anthony? >> reporter: well, dave, the way it turned out the highway was a construction zone all night last night. fortunately, it did reopen before the morning commute began. but here's the latest on this story. the dramatic dashcam video is being used by state police investigators to determine the exact cause of that tragic fatal accident on the turnpike yesterday afternoon. the fuel truck violently swerving to avoid what appears to be a mattress along with other motorists on the roadway

before it jackknifed and tumbled over the guardrail before bursting into a wall of scorching hot flames. the truck driver who had his dashcam tried to rescue the driver but the heat at the scene was just too intense. the fuel fed flames were roaring for nearly two hours and a day after this tragedy on the turnpike, authorities are still trying to get a positive id on the driver. and autopsy is taking place right now and this morning, state police saying that the medical examiner may use dna to make the official identification. however, the truck company has most likely told the driver's family about the tragedy. as for the driver of the vehicle that had the mattresses on top, before falling off onto the turnpike, that person remained at the scene and no charges have been filed. state police now have 30 days to file charges which could end up being a motor vehicle violation for improper loading. and investigators are looking

but they also say the truck driver who perished was not at fault. the only thing they're looking at to make sure the vehicle carrying the mattresses had them properly secured on top of that vehicle before this tragedy took place. that is the latest live from rutherford, new jersey, anthony johnson, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> anthony thank you. new information on the ill- fated voyage of the el faro cargo ship. we have just learned that one of the missing crew members is 26-year-old mitchell cufflink from brooklyn. the coast guard suspended the search for possible survivors last night. nearly one week after the ship went down near the bahamas during hurricane joaquin. investigators now focus their efforts on locating the ship's voyage data recorder which will emit a ping for 30 days after hitting the water. the mysterious death of a mother and her 5-year-old son in new jersey are being investigated by police as suspicious. police say a woman in her 20s

unconscious in a second floor apartment on lincoln street in jersey city last night. both were pronounced dead at christ hospital. prosecutors say carbon monoxide tests on the home were negative. new at noon, ev amorph wit announcing that she is not running against him in 2017. moscow wit she's been at odds with the de blasio administration over expansion and space for students at charter schools. she is also a former city council member. an nypd watchdog is backing up the excessive force complaint filed by former tennis pro james blake. surveillance video from last month shows officer jameses from coo tour key tackling blake outside the hotel. the complaint review board says the takedown was excessive and that officer will now face an administrative trial. in a statement, blake said i want to express my appreciation

because it's absolutely gorgeous. here's our camera in brooklyn looking over to the lower east side and just a moment ago i saw all kinds of stuff going on. police boat going up and down and circle line going up and down. there's the sea streak and there's the ferries on the other side over south street sea port. really nice day and you see we have some high thin cirrus clouds up top. and there's a little although cumulus micked in -- altocumulus mixed in there too. a really nice afternoon with a nice high pressure ridge that's changed the winds around to the northeast. a dry humidity and temperature of 66-degrees and the pressure 30.17 which is awesome. normal high temperature is 7. we're going to be above that by the time we get to the maximum heating time which is about 6:30. so a few clouds those high clouds you saw and this is going to make it a few degrees cooler today than yesterday but still above normal. rain returns to the area tomorrow afternoon. and there could be a thunderstorm possible in that mix too during the evening commute tomorrow. we got a nice fall weekend ahead by the time we get to sunday might even approach 70

so sunset park is at 67. ridgewood 68. river dale 65. staten island, right around great kills bay is about 68 degrees there at oakwood and oakland and right around the northwest, northwest of the area, up to monticello, 63. with this little northerly wind to the northeast coming around out of the southeast. so you see the wind profiles here. we added on hardly any clouds. and still winds are coming around this high pressure ridge. so it's kind of a bubble of a high that will slide eastward and then coming from the west is going to be this cold front. this right now headed towards chicago, that keeps sliding south and east and will gain us tomorrow. and can give us a shower and a thunderstorm. but it looks like that's going to be about -- 3:00 in northwest new jersey to 5:00 in the city. right at the evening commute. popup showers and might even be a heavy downpour. a thunderstorm in here. fall cold front you get these kind of fronts in the spring and in the fall. and it's about the time we get that pushes out east across long island and the flick and

a judge under fire and a red carpet protest, here's some of the stories that were caught on camera and caught our attention. well dramatic rescue in the lone star state. a man found himself dangling under a bridge in houston after he slipped while performing marijuana nance work yesterday. for thes attach -- maintenance work yesterday. firefighters attached a pulley and he was pulled to safety after an hour. florida judge jerry collins under fire after she was caught on camera chastising a domestic violence victim before sentencing her to three days in jail for ignoring a subpoena. the victim sobs uncontrollably as she tries to explain to the judge why she should receive leniency. >> i'm homeless now. i'm living in my parents' house, i had to everything i own. my 1-year-old son and i try the take care of him by myself, i'm begging you please. my anxiety -- >> you think you have anxiety now?

our top stories this afternoon, three people accused of opening fire on nypd officers in brooklyn are now in custody. the three officers were in unmarked cars in fort green. the officers were not hurt but the bullets though hit their car. the suspects were in a dispute and one of them was shot in the leg. we have learned one of the missing crew members from the cargo ship that sank during hurricane joaquin is from brooklyn.

26-year-old mitchell cufflink was one of the 33 crew members on board. officials stopped searching for any survivors last night. but are still trying to find the day recorder. new jersey state police using dashcam video to investigate the fiery tanker crash on the turnpike. you can see it right here, the driver of the truck died and officials say mattresses were in the road at the time. hello again, i'm david novarro. >> and i'm shirleen allicot. we begin this half hour with that teen in connecticut scared for her life jumping out of a car. >> yeah, investigators say the 17-year-old was abducted by a woman and released this video of the teen escaping from the moving car. now this happened monday in bridgeport. now police are trying to find the woman. eyewitness news reporter tim fleischer live in bridgeport with the very latest. tim? >> reporter: and this is where the bridgeport police are hoping the public might be able to help. they're looking for this female driver who tried to -- who old teenager.

think that her car might very well be the best clue. the scariest moment for a 17- year-old girl came when she can be seen rolling from the passenger's side of this car out onto the pavement. the sudden move police say is as she tries to escape a female driver in her 40s who tried to abduct her. >> maybe if it was a man tries to get her in the car she wouldn't go in the first place but seeing that it's a woman, it's just strange because she doesn't know who the person is. >> reporter: the incident began at the corner of boston and pal side in bridgeport early monday morning. the driver of this charcoal gray toyota lured the girl who was on her way to school into the car police say. and began to assault her. >> that's what she do. maybe she just bail out. she would be dead. >> reporter: here's where police need your help. the car seen in this video released by investigators is a toyota yaris and its rear bumper is missing exposing the white styrofoam beneath it. it was caught on several

jersey, florida and ohio. the fbi said it also found text messages where he discussed the sexual encounter with a bronx high school of science student who police say is 14, 15 years old. police say a livery driver was hit as he got out of the car at madison avenue and 80th street just before 2:00 this morning. the car believed to have been involved was stopped a short time later on the upper west side at 71st street and west end avenue. two people are being questioned the driver is expected to survive. the arrest of a man wanted for stealing a cell phone is now the subject of an nypd internal investigation. because of what showed up on a security camera. this happened september 11th in a sunset park brooklyn bodega. police surround the man wanted for stealing an iphone and start beating him.

victim a paramedic, joins in. the suspect 21-year-old daniel shevchenko apparently he's a tooth. his -- lost a tooth. his stepfather says they need to be punished. >> i understand that people do crimes but this doesn't allow police officers and other people to just haul this -- hold the wrong guy down. and beat him up. >> he pleaded guilty to fourth degree grand larceny and will be sentenced later this month. happening today, a former fdny captain convicted of sexually molesting two young brothers is scheduled to be sentenced in a los angeles court. wilbert riera carried out the assault in l. a. last year while visiting family. the 51-year-old from bay shore. long island negotiated a plea deal. he must serve 270 days in county jail. he must also undergo a year of therapy and register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. well, now an update on the historic and deadly flooding in the carolinas.

they've left at least 19 people dead. rivers though are still riding at this hour and as the region braces for more flooding, there and canals breaching. abc's elizabeth herr is in columbia, south carolina right now with the very latest. elizabeth? >> reporter: david, more than a dozen dams very failed and the columbia canal behind me here a portion of it collapsed just yesterday which is alarming because this canal is the city's main source of drinking water. a call for residents to conserve water this morning in columbia, south carolina. after the work of sandbagging and plugging in earlier breach was temporarily suspended when a portion of the columbia canal collapsed. >> the plan here is to close the breach and the wall between the canal and the river. if we're able to do that, then we'll be in good shape for the long haul. >> reporter: meanwhile, these new images from above, the before and after of a dam break showing just why authorities
