>> why did they start shooting and did they know they were actually shooting at police? these are obviously questions investigators are still trying to answer and we have new information for you. it's about a bag that police found here at the scene. >> reporter: several men arrested. one of them already on parole for a gun violation and cops say he fired this .45-caliber at them at least seven times last night. it started at park avenue and north portland where plain clothes officers were in this unmarked car for surveillance following up on a triple homicide in this neighborhood just two weeks ago. they say 23-year-old quashawn smith suddenly started shooting, so did a second suspect who fired four more times. police have yet to find his gun. police fired back. but the police commissioner says this could have ended far worse. >> no injuries there other than being treated for the ringing in the ears. good work on the part

of the officers. proactive. >> reporter: cops said they made an unexpected discovery in this area. >> a pink piece of luggage. i believe it belongs to these three individuals. >> reporter: but it contained a considerable amount of ammunition. >> so i think they thwarted a possible shooting and of course they did a really great job. >> reporter: meanwhile, area residents not surprised at all that a parolee would be carrying a gun around here but the frustration is clear. >> i'm pretty sure there's a lot of people in this project that carry guns. unless they can figure out they're not going to be able to do anything about it because they all carry guns. >> people got to start taking in to consideration life is presence. we only got one chance. and to be so young and to lose it, come on. why throw it away? it's not worth it. >> the other two suspects arrested in the shooting were 22-year-old santos and 24-year-old devon morrison.

a fourth suspect was actually arrested for allegedly driving quashawn smith to the hospital. that's how police found him. he had checked himself in to an area hospital with a gunshot stacey sager, channel 7 eyewitness news. a new york celebrity chef distributing child pornography. it's a case that includes allegations he had sex with a minor and then shared the encounter online. matthew tivy who owns an eatery in manhattan was arrested in may for sexual abuse of a minor. after examining tivy's cell phone, investigators discovered the pictures. we're going to turn to the developing story in connecticut. police say they have found the car used in an attempted kidnapping of a teenage girl in bridgeport. the girl escaped. you can see by jumping out of a moving vehicle. right now they're still looking for the

woman whose driving that car. tim fleischer is here with the very latest. >> police are certain that the driver and the teenager never met, didn't even know each other. as for a possible motive, that remains unclear but one thing for certain tonight, police do know who they're looking for. >> reporter: the shocking video. a 17-year-old girl making a desperate escape bridgeport police say, tumbling out of the passenger side of a moving car has now helped to develop important leads. >> we have the car in that video in our custody. >> reporter: the charcoal toyota yaris with a noticeable clue, a missing bumper, was found, police revealed, in new haven and investigators are looking for the suspect. >> we've identified the woman who we believe is responsible for this act and we are very hopeful that an arrest is imminent. >> reporter: the teenage student was walking to school near the corner of boston and palisade early monday morning

when a driver, a woman described as in her 40s, stopped and offered her a ride. suddenly the woman assaulted the student, and feerg for her life, she made her daring escape. police do not believe the two knew each other previously and as for a woman attempting the abduction -- >> somebody attempting to harm a child. i think the gender of the perpetrator is irrelevant. >> reporter: others find it surprising a woman would attempt this crime. >> that's the shocking part about it. it's not really common. >> reporter: police don't have a motive but the search goes on for the suspect and the case is at the top of the list. >> it's serious and it has to do with the children of priority. >> that's why police are hoping to make a quick arrest. tim fleischer, channel 7 eyewitness news. there's new video tonight of two suspects wanted for vandalizing the mexican consulate in manhattan. these are the two men police are now

splashed red paint on the entrance of the mexican consulate last month located on east 39th street. still not clear what the motive was though. new york city medical examiner moments ago positively identifying the second person who died in the explosion in brooklyn. the victim is francisca figueroa. investigators are looking in to whether the blast was accidental or intentional. figueroa was reportedly in serious debt, getting evicted. fire marshals the cause. police have identified the driver of a van whose mattress and box spring triggered a dash cam video shows the truck swerving to avoid the debris near carney yesterday. it hit a guard rail, flipped over and burst in to flames. authorities say the truck was carrying 8500 gallons of fuel. the truck was operated by jsk transport of warren, new jersey and police believe the

driver who was killed may have been from newark. no charges have been filed against the van driver. mayor de blasio heading to israel a week from tomorrow. he's a keynote speaker in a conference of mayors. his topic, anti-semitism in the west and how the city must lead the campaign against him. cost of the three-day trip covered by private donations. security for the trip covered by the nypd. new at 6:00, speaking of the mayor, no shortage of possible opponents. fellow democrats who disagree with how he's running the city. one democrat who will not challenge mr. de blasio, one of his toughest critics. eva moskowitz has more harsh words for his honor. he's political reporter dave evans. >> i'm not running for mayor in 2017. >> reporter: for someone who's not running, eva moskowitz generates a lot of publicity. she's the founder of success academy charter schools. helped organize yesterday's rally.

she's also a thorn in the side of the teacher's union and a lot of democrats. >> i don't back down and they've tried threatening every which way possible and i don't back down. >> reporter: the mayor today basically shrugged when told of moskowitz' decision. >> each person has to make their own choice on whether they want to run for office and i said i welcome anyone who makes that choice. >> reporter: while moskowitz talked, a group nearby chanted and shouted. >> she's not running for mayor. is that a relief? >> definitely a relief. can you imagine here being mayor of new york city? >> reporter: many don't like moskowitz and her schools. they call her divisive and point to a new tv ad from some of her supporters who happen to be wealthy wall streeters. the ad shows a white child destined for success who presumably goes to charter school and a black child in a regular school. >> all of the sudden now she's

well, if she is, take down that racist ad. >> reporter: moskowitz says so many don't like her simply because her schools are good. >> instead of welcoming that success, there has been obstacles at every turn. >> still no slate of possible candidates to run against the mayor in 2017. even moskowitz is out but she continues to be an outspoken critic of the mayor and public schools. shocker today just before a vote named the new speaker of the house. kevin mccarthy, the munl or the -- the majority leader pulled his name from the running. he's failed to gain support of hard line conservatives in the republican party. >> if we're going to be strong, we've got to be 100% united. >> mccarthy says he will hold had his position as majority leader. john boehner says he

hometown of sacramento. surveillance video shows stone fighting with several people. police say the altercation started inside a nightclub before spilling out on the street. stone's injuries are considered serious but doctors expect him to pull through. police have made no arrests so far. new york city's main convention center. >> nearly seven acres of gardens that have become a burn refuge and enormous energy safer for the facility. >> lauren glassberg taking us on the roof. >> reporter: it's an urban field of dreams. nearly seven acres of plants with a purpose. >> it's an unexpected space in the middle of manhattan. nobody looks at javits and expects to see a green space on the top. >> reporter: allen steele is the president of the center and this green roof is the second largest in the country. a living thing on top of a building that for years had been

in to the old reflective windows but those 6,000 panels have been replaced with these less reflective ones and along with that the leaky roof transformed. bruce is the architect and a bird lover. bird deaths are down because of the new windows. and the roof has become a sanctuary for 11 different bird species. >> during migration all the birds come up through new york and look for green spaces to feed, re-energize themselves to go on. this is one more place they can do that. >> reporter: some of them even nesting here and there are bats too. this device records their calls. it isn't just the bats and the birds. it's also the bees. honeybees are enjoying the rooftop as well. >> we hope to have more hives next year and once you do, you'll start to see bottles at javits. >> how sweet it is. >> reporter: it's

we're going to show it again. after his long tour away from home, one little girl couldn't wait a minute longer to give dad a hug. 300 soldiers from the third armored brigade combat team returning tuesday. one member, that guy right there. his daughter didn't want to wait anymore. she ran away from her mom and gave dad a big hug. mom, he's home. >> everyone craves a hug like that. just the best. >> little running american flag. >> very sweet. not too much rain is the big takeaway. >> it's not a washout. yes, we've been talking about this as the one day of the week we'll have more rainfall. a couple lines of showers. a lot of it is going to happen around this time of day, midafternoon and early evening hours. outside right now, beautiful sunset. sun gets a little smaller this time of year. it looks beautiful out there. a really pretty sunset. patchy cloudiness along the horizon making for gorgeous colors.

64 degrees right now, the south wind at 8. barometer holding 70 and high today in the lower 70s. average high, 67. i think we could be 7 to 10 above that tomorrow. kind of a late summer feel. sunrise and sunset right there for you. headlines look like this. tomorrow again, not a washout. a few lines of showers mainly in the afternoon. if you're north and west with the midhudson valley, northern new jersey, i wouldn't be shocked to see a shower sneak in by mid to late morning tomorrow. it's a late summer feel tomorrow because the humidity comes up. we're in the mid 70s followed by a crisp fall feel on saturday as temperatures struggle through the low and middle 60s. 63 in oakwood. white stone, queens coming in at 65. 64 in riverdale. lower hudson valley in the 70s. sunniest area today was through the hudson valley. remains sunny much of the day. patchy clouds during the first part of the night. mostly cloudy tomorrow morning. we'll

start the day with a launching pad. winds picking up out of the southwest. then a shower or thunderstorm starts popping up in the afternoon hours. skies are clearing for now but more clouds will spill in overnight. this warm front which is to our south right now will come back through tonight and that's why we may spark a shower north and west tomorrow morning. once we get on this side of the front, it's warmer, more humid. we go in to the mid 70s. short window for that. that cold front will come through during the evening hours with a shower or thunderstorm. we'll be exposed to all these warm numbers during the afternoon before the cooler air settles in later on tomorrow night. watch this futurecast. as the initial surge of warm air comes in, fair amount of clouds tomorrow morning. things should be quiet during the middle of the day. clouds may thin out especially south of the city. here comes a couple lines late day in to the evening hours. many spots will see a 10th of an inch, very little. if you can get a couple downpours you might get a half inch of rainfall.

not a big rain but there is the threat of thunder. 76 degrees. saturday, completely different feel. low and middle 60s but lots of sunshine. earlier in the week we were concerned that front would slow down. no way. tomorrow, cloud, a little sun and a couple lines of showers, thunderstorms mainly in the afternoon. tomorrow night that's an evening threat after 8:00, 9:00, good. great on saturday with sunshine coming back. few high clouds on sunday. near 70. in the 70s again early next week. so we're not done with the warmth. and a great fall weekend ahead. >> thanks, lee.

game in the american league. rangers against the blue jays. the first postseason baseball game of any kind in toronto since 22 years ago. they're in the bottom of the 9th inning right now. 5-3 rangers. two home runs off david price in that game. that's just game 1. last night in the initial league now, the wildcard game, the cubs beat the pirates 4-0. jake arrieta hasn't lost since july but he did help ignite a bench clearing brouhaha. he hit a couple guys then was plunked. bad blood between the cubs and pirates and apparently between sean rodriguez and the water jug. regardless the dream is alive in chicago. knicks won their nba preseason opener last night. they start playing for keeps in less than three weeks. most of the focus the last 24 hours has been on the head coach. the nba investigating an apparent altercation between derek fisher and matt barns. -- matt barnes. they used to be teammates. this happened at the
